Welcome Brock 15-102 into the RAGOM family!

He has only been with us 3 days, but he has been an easy houseguest. He is housebroken (no accidents!) and sleeps through the night on the floor in the bedroom. That is very unusual for the 1st few nights in a new home. He takes treats nicely, gets along with other dogs and LOVES people.

Brock has exhibited no aggression issues, no eating issues, no fear issues and no storm anxiety. He has let me take away food and bones, does not mind petting while he is eating or my fingers in his bowl! He does cry or whine for a few minutes when I crate him and leave, but seems relaxed in his crate when I return. Last night’s storm and the noisy construction next door have not bothered him at all. Our resident dog gets along well with Brock. She is older, and only wants to play a little but he is OK with that. He has lots of energy, but settles down and is calm in the house. He likes his walks and might make a good running partner with some training.

Brock was a stray so his exact birthdate is not known. The vet estimates about 2 years old. He is up to date with vaccines, has been neutered, microchipped and is a healthy guy.

He has a very unusual look. I’ve been told that he looks like a bear from the front, a fox from the back and a tiger in the middle. He has a very broad head…..bigger than what seems right for his more petite (55 pound) body. I just can’t get a good picture to show you how really cute he is! The brindle coloring is just beautiful. He is obviously not a purebred golden, but is as sweet as any Golden Retriever!

He definitely needs some training on basic manners:

  • He jumps up when he gets excited.
  • He has put his paws on the countertop twice.
  • He pulls on a leash.
  • He tries to bolt out the door.

These are all very trainable behaviors and Brock is learning all these niceties very quickly. I get the feeling that he really wants to learn how to be a better dog! We have seen improvement in all these areas in the short time he has been with us. That said, he will need a family that has time to devote to his training for him to be the perfect dog that I know he can be.

Brock here!

I wanted to tell you myself that I have a new place to live with the H family. They are very understanding parents (probably because they are 3X RAGOM adopters!). They have a big box of toys at their house which they let me play with right away and I also have a big fenced yard to run in. I think I hit the jackpot!

I also want to thank Sue, Louie and Minnie for kindly sponsoring me so that I could find my forever family.

Having Brock around is really nice.

He is always ready for some snuggling. If I’m busy, he waits patiently. He rarely barks, and if he does, it is just a couple of times.

Took Brock to the lake to see if he liked to swim. From his reaction, I think it may have been his first time. He would only go in up to his ankles at first, but then kept getting braver until he finally wanted the buoy badly enough that he swam just a little. Later he came back and pulled on the rope that led to the buoy to drag it toward him. Smart dog! We will have to try again, as I think he will be more enthusiastic with a few more exposures.

We have found that he likes kids. He was with a group of 6-8 year olds and was very gentle and calm and liked all the attention, but gets too enthusiastic about licking faces with kids that are at his level (like age 2 or 3) especially if he elicits some high pitched squeals from the kids.

He is such a funny guy. I love watching him while he entertains himself. He will toss a stuffed toy into the air and then pounce on it, grab it and run back and forth with it in his mouth. Then he will chew on it for a while and flip on his back with it still in his mouth.

I’ve been taking him walking off leash and he loves running through the tall grass. I was initially worried that he might not come back when called, but he happily runs to me (and his treat) when I call.

We still have not seen any destructive tendencies. He grabs a shoe once in a while, but mostly just runs into another room with it and then we trade him for a dog toy.

He is content on a tie out while I’m in the yard doing chores. He just likes to know where I am.

He is learning “Target” and “Place” as well. He learns quickly, but will need continued reinforcement.

When we meet someone while he is on leash now, he will initially want to jump up, but if the newcomer steps back for a second, he immediately sits down for attention. GOOD BOY!

If your heart isn’t set on a “Golden-looking” dog, but it is set on a friendly, outgoing, sweet “Golden-hearted” dog, Brock may be the dog for you!

Brock fan club here! We enjoy him more every day that he stays with us.

He no longer cries when left in the kennel, in fact he likes hanging out in there during the day when we are home, but busy. I think he was just a bit nervous those first few days. He has easily learned sit, down and stay. Brock no longer tries to bolt out the door, but waits for permission to go out. He doesn’t mind getting his feet cleaned on the way back in either. We have been walking him twice a day using his Gentle Leader which is enough to get that puppy energy out.

I love that he just automatically lays down when we sit down to eat. He is very patient. He meets other dogs nicely on leash although we are still working on not jumping up to greet people. He loves kids too. The only reason I have him listed as kids ages 10+ is because of his tendency to do an open mouthed hop at your chin or nose when he is trying to tell you that he loves you! I will be seeing a trainer with Brock to help him stop this behavior.

The only thing he has damaged in the 12 days he has been with us is a sponge that got left out. I think he had fun shredding that! He has free roam while we are home because he is such a good boy, and crated while we are gone.

Brock did great at the “Meet and Greet” on Saturday. He was very excited for a little while with all the people, dogs and smells. He REALLY wanted to play with the other dogs. He did several play bows, but unfortunately there just wasn’t enough room! Within a short time he settled down and just sat or laid by me.

If Brock sounds like the guy for your family, talk to your placement advisor, We would love to meet you.
