Have you seen the old movie “Meatballs” starring Bill Murray?  The setting is a summer camp, and one morning the director announces on the loudspeaker that the winner of the previous day’s mystery meat contest is a boy who guessed “Some kind of meat.”  Well, this week at our house we had a RAGOM Mystery-Mix contest to see who could most accurately name what breed our Brody Zeus is!  The winning answer?  You guessed it! “Some kind of mix”!  BZ, as we like to call him, is 3 to 4 years old, and is a beautiful golden color on his back with white socks and a white chest.  He has wonderful hazel eyes and a huge blocky head.  He does have some light scarring on his nose and face.  I’m guessing he is about 80 lbs and could stand to gain a few.

He is a tall, athletic boy, but does a great job of keeping four on the floor to greet people and get loves.  His whole body wags when he gets going, and when he is really excited he wrinkles his nose up, snorts air and smiles until it makes him sneeze! BZ is very calm in the house and likes to snooze on the floor.  After only a day he has earned free roam – no chewing issues even with the Christmas tree, ornaments and presents within reach.  He has been introduced to kids from age 4 through teens and been calm and loving with all.  He met my resident with wagging tail, but didn’t expend even that much energy on the cat.  He has no resource guarding and no aggression of any kind.  He loves treats and takes them very gently, even from little fingers.  He has marked once in the house (not too unusual in a new place that has lots of good dog smells from previous fosters!) but otherwise seems completely housebroken.

He isn’t too sure of the car yet, and does want to help drive if he isn’t restrained.  I can assure you that his brand of help is not appreciated when I’m behind the wheel!  We will be working on this and helping him get comfortable getting in and out of the car.  He was surrendered by a shelter that was having difficulty finding a home that they felt was a good match.  In the past, BZ has been a runner, escaping through open gates and doors and then enjoying the thrill of having someone chase him.  Previous owners report that he has always returned home after he burns off some serious energy.  Apparently the only thing that makes a great breakout even better is a three-way chase complete with BZ chasing livestock and peeps chasing BZ!

Because of this, BZ’s forever home will either need a fenced yard (preferably a 5 or 6 foot fence, though he hasn’t yet tried to jump our 4 footer), a tie out, or leashed walks only.  He would make a fantastic running or walking partner and is great on a leash with a flat collar.  Obedience training  with some hard work on good recall will be important to his safety because he’s a runner, but otherwise he has lovely manners.
We are half in love with him already and he’s only been here 24 hours!  Other than needing to watch him outside, he feels like he has been here forever.  If you are in the market for a gentle giant, with a silly snorting/smiling habit, who loves all people and dogs, and you are willing to give him a safe space to work off his energy, contact your placement advisor.  This guy is too good to last!

If you get a chance, check out his video!  It’s pretty low key, but then he’s pretty low key too (unless he’s on the run!).  You can see this big love at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejQa0iWLdLQ .

BZ is doing great! He is truly a sweetheart and loves his people and playing with other dogs. There have been NO further accidents, so the early ones can be attributed to our inability to read his signals rather than any problem on his end.

While he loves to explore, and will take the chance if he gets it, his adoptive dad had fantastic success with training his recall. BZ will need a family who is willing to take great care with his safety during the months after adoption to ensure he doesn't slip out the door and go for a spin around the neighborhood. Once he has adjusted to his new environment and bonded with his family, this issue will likely diminish, or be eliminated entirely.

BZ has successfully lived without a physical fence, but is not an ideal dog to boundary train. Families without a fence should be committed to frequent leash walks and use of a tie-out.

If you are looking for an ideal walking companion and a top-notch snuggler, BZ could be your guy! Please email your placement advisor if you are interested.

Please welcome the handsome and talented Brody Zeus back to RAGOM! BZ was originally adopted in 2011 and spent almost four years with a fantastic family loving him up. When his dad got married this fall, members of his new family were allergic to dogs, and his dad made the difficult decision to surrender him back to RAGOM.

BZ has settled in like he never left. He is a big snuggler, walks great on a flat collar, loves kids and dogs, and has a fantastic "smile" when he is happy. He is a big boy, but definitely a gentle giant.

He will jump a four-foot fence, and tends to follow his nose once he is free. Thanks to a lot of work by his adoptive dad, he will stick around reasonably well, but his new family will need to be very cautious. He is a little over-friendly with the four-footed ladies (and gentlemen), but will stop once directed.

He is potty trained  but has had a few accidents here since he returned. This isn't atypical for dogs coming to a new environment and fortunately for us, he has chosen to do his business on the cement floor of the basement. Hey, if you have to have an accident...

BZ is an amazing dog. He loves his peeps and will happily keep our toes warm at night. If BZ sounds like he might be a fit for your family, please contact your placement advisor!

Happy New Year!  BZ is doing great and has come so far in the few weeks he has been with us!  He has learned to sit and wait for his food and is working on table manners (pretty hard when your chin is table-height).  He is also getting the car routine down.  I open the back door and get in the driver’s seat while holding the leash.  As soon as I am in with the door shut, he will climb right in the back!  Yay BZ!  He is still working on relaxing in the car, so right now he still likes to surf the passenger seat… Nose out the window, standing up and swaying with the movement of the car.  He has backed off on his previously persistent attempts to help with the driving, which is a definite bonus because he’s not very good at it!
Our resident, Archie, is offering (ok, demanding) to teach BZ how to worship the yellow-green orb-of-retrieval.  The other day we saw a play-bow and some tennis-ball batting going on, so it may be that he has learned more from our cat than Archie, but it is so fun to see him playing.  There have also been several brief rounds of tug and some race-and-wrestle matches.  He finally found the bed a few days ago, which has allowed him into the snuggle club.
Here is what we know:
·         Great with kids of all ages, dogs and cats (though he will chase four-legged “intruders” in the backyard)
·         Very calm, gentle and loves to snuggle
·         Playful with other dogs, and learning to play with toys and balls
·         Completely potty trained and can hold it for a long day (will whine to let you know he needs out)
·         Walks like a dream on a flat leash and would make a great running partner
·         Doesn’t counter surf or chew stuff up
·         Will jump 4 to 5 foot fences if given the chance
·         Will benefit from obedience training, especially recall (see previous bullet)
Of course, our favorite characteristics are his welcome home “smile” and the constant tattoo of his tail on the walls and floors.  Regardless of what he looks like on the outside, he is all golden on the inside!

Merry Christmas!  I’m sending out a huge BZ smile to the person who sent me a holiday mitten!  Who hoo!  I know someone special was responsible for that even though it looks like I sent it to myself (which I didn’t, but it’s not a bad idea to boost my popularity rating). Yesterday might have been my first ever holiday celebration, and I loved it!  I had my very own green stocking that my foster brother picked out for me, and it was filled with  crunchy treats and soft treats and rawhides.  There was a ball in there, too, but who cares?  Balls = Boring.  I would much rather eat, snuggle, snooze and get scratches.  It was perfect for me because we did all of that stuff all day long!

I was hoping today would be another Christmas, but at this point, it’s not looking good.
In other news, I have my own bed now.  My family calls it the love seat, which is very appropriate – especially when I’m draped across it.  There was some grumbling around here… Something about a $1500 dog bed, but I think it’s great.  It fits me perfectly when I’m by myself, and when I’m really lucky and a human wants to sit down, I have a great pillow for my head.

FM, who I once thought was wonderful, has turned into my own personal jailer.  Every time we step foot out the door, she has to be tied to me with the leash thingy.  She totally can’t keep up with me, and since I don’t pull on the leash, that means that I have to go her speed which equates to super-sloooooow mo.  I guess she doesn’t like it when I chase the neighbor’s bunnies.  She is reading over my shoulder (can you say annoying?) and says it doesn’t have anything to do with the bunnies, it has to do with the fence I jump over to get to the bunnies.  Whatever.  There is a lot of talk in this house about a six-foot fence come spring.  I guess that means I’m a pretty good boy and they might want me around for a while.  You better snatch me up now ‘cause I hear all the time that I’m really something special.  Seriously?  I’m a dog, so that’s kinda a given.  But still…
