RAGOM I would like to introduce you to Carter! This golden retriever/sheperd mix sweetie has been with Ragom since December! He is originally from Alabama until Ragom found him and brought him north. He has been in boarding until last week when he came to Duluth! When he first arrived he was extremely timid, it took us five minutes to get him up the stairs (don't think he has seen those before). The first few days Carter was having numerous accidents around the house, drinking excess amounts of water, and seemed all around low on energy. Given that he was in a new surrounding we were unsure if that was the cause or something else. I brought Carter into the vet and he had hookworms and UTI :( He has finished the treatment for hookworms and has one day left of his medication to treat the UTI!

He has made huge progress in the past four days, having hardly any accidents in the house! His personality is starting to come through and he is just a big baby that wants love. He loves when people lay on the floor because then he will come snuggle right next to you. You can definitely tell that he has not received much human affection prior to coming into Ragom.

Carter has a lot of funny quirks that make him a very unique dog. He does not like to eat human food! He is one of the only dogs that I have ever met who doesn't, and this includes peanut butter! Carter likes to play with cardboard boxes, and loves his rawhide bones. Also when you rub inside of his ears he starts to moan like a goofball! He has also discovered while coming into my bedroom what a mirror is. He constantly goes in there now and sits in front of the mirror just staring at himself!

From what I have learned so far about Carter I think these are what he needs in a forever home:

- He prefers a quieter home environment

- Physical or invisible fence

- Would do fine being the only resident dog

His age is somewhat of a mystery with vets saying he is 3,6, or 8. The Ragom vet puts him at 6 years old though! If you think Carter sounds like a fit for your family and lifestyle contact your placement advisor! All this handsome boy needs is people to show him unconditional love!

Well everybody I have wonderful news to share-- I have been adopted! My foster mom's parents fell in love with me and decided that they need me in their lives! I now get to live with two other resident dogs who are taking it easy on me because they know that I am shy at first. My new owners live out in the country so I get lots of room to run around and explore!

Who would have thought a boy from Alabama would find his forever home in small town Minnesota with a loving family who adores him! Thank you RAGOM for helping me find my forever home!!

Love, Carter

Carter has been loving this beautiful weather we have had in Duluth, he gets to go out on at least two walks a day now! At the end of the day he is pretty tuckered out and falls alsleep as early as 8! Last week Carter was brought back to the vet to check if all of the hookworm was gone and sadly they found some still in his system. The good news is he has already finished his second treatment for them and we will find out soon if they are gone for good this time!

Other great and exciting news for Carter is he is now a two trick pony!! He has now officially mastered sit and lay down! We could not be more proud of all the progress he has made in the almost three months that he has been our Foster Dog

Hello RAGOM I am happy to report that Carter is doing well and is continuing to come out of his shell. He now greets his FM when she come home at the door tail wagging and with a big smile!

Over Easter weekend he went back to his FM hometown and got to hang out with a German Sheppard and Saint Bernard! Carter did wonderful with them, and did not show any signs of aggression all weekend. When they tried to engage him in play though he preferred to watch! Carter was subjected to a photo shoot and we were able to get one good picture of him with his Easter hat on :) From the one picture you can tell he got pretty tuckered out from his hoppin weekend!

Here is a snapshot of what Carter would need in his forever home:

  • only resident dog, or resident dog who is on the more submissive side, he requires very slow introductions
  • house where there tends to not be too much commotion as it makes him anxious
  • would do fine in a home where he is home alone during day, he is not destructive
  • does fine with cats!
  • fence or tie out would be fine, though I am sure he would love a fence so he can run around more :)
  • family who is very patient with him, he takes time to warm up to new friends
  • no younger kids

Let you placement advisor if he sounds like a match for your family!

Carter has had a big week and has made HUGE strides! A little background information first: when Carter first arrived at his foster home he was extremely timid. I wanted him to sleep in my room with me, but he was having none of it. So for the first three weeks at bedtime I would move his bed and put if half in my room and half in the hallway, so he could get used to the room a little at a time. So last Tuesday it was bedtime and I shut all the lights off and put his bed in the normal spot and laid down, only to have Carter run and jump up on the bed!!! He could tell I was so happy that he finally felt comfortable enough to come in there, and he slept the whole night up on the bed!

The rest of the week Carter got to spend a lot of time outside with the beautiful weather we had here in Duluth, getting to go on a bunch of hikes through the nature park a few blocks away from us. With the warmer temperatures the streams through the park have thawed and I wanted to see how Carter responded to those. He is not a fan of them to say the least! We stayed down there for 30 mins trying to get him to even just put a paw in but he wanted none of it, maybe it was just to chilly for this southern boy?! It is hard to get a good picture of him because he is never standing still, and he still does not know any commands.

Carter went on an adventure this past week on Friday. While his other foster mom was packing up her car to leave for spring break Carter saw that both doors were open and took off. We immediately tried calling him to come back but he seemed to be taking it as a game of catch! Luckily some Good Samaritans helped out by driving in front of Carter and trying to block him off, however he is a sneaky little guy when he wants to be! Eventually the GS brought their dogs over to the area Carter was in and he came right over to see who these new friends were and we grabbed hold of him! This just further shows how he needs constant supervision in his forever home when it involves outside!

Now that Carter has become so much more comfortable here we are hoping that now he will be able to start learning some simple commands, such as sit and stay! Carter is still a work in progress, but he has proven that if you give him time that he returns that love twofold!

Contact your placement advisor if you can't resist this cutie and want to make him part of your family!

Carter has been busy settling in to life outside of boarding and he is doing wonderful! It has taken until now for him to fully warm up to me, so it is important for anyone interested in adopting him to know this and not get the wrong impression. He really is a sweet and goofy boy, especially when it comes to his food. He likes to take a mouthful and then run to the living room and pile it up, until he decides that is enough and tries to take the whole bowl full of food with him. He has not yet managed to get the bowl of food from the kitchen to the living room and have any food left in the bowl!

This past weekend Carter got to meet a cat for the first time, and he was completely unphased. Which is good news for any potential forever homes who have resident cats! He also met two female dogs and they got along fine. He did get a little possessive when I gave attention to one of the other dogs instead of him, but after being corrected he quickly went back to being a gentleman.

Because Carter came in to RAGOM from a shelter, not much is known about him. I am learning something new about him everyday, and he continues to amaze me. He acts like a dog who has had a tough life prior to coming in to RAGOM, yet it is clear to tell that he craves love, but just needs someone who is patient with him. If Carter sounds like a match for you let your placement advisor know!
