Say hello to RAGOM's newest Southern Gentleman, Champ! Champ came to RAGOM from a shelter in Alabama where he was picked up as a stray. Since he was a stray, we do not know anything about his past. The vet believes he is 3-5 years old. He is a mix of some kind, with fur a little bit longer than that of a Yellow Lab with some white mixed in and a white stripe down his nose. He has a very sweet face with some scabs that the vet thinks will eventually heal. He weighs 52 pounds, but is a little underweight. He has been neutered and his shots are now up-to-date. He tested negative for heartworm, but was positive for hookworms for which he has been treated.

Champ is a scared boy, but has been making progress daily in the week that we have had him. His first couple of days with us he did not leave our mudroom where his kennel is, and we had to carry him outside to go potty. After a couple of days, he started slowly following our dogs outside to go potty. After a few more days, he started venturing into our family room and kitchen, but he will not stay long and heads back to the mudroom. He does not come to us for pets, but he does not run away from us like he did at first. We are being patient and giving him time to feel safe and learn from our resident dogs. In his forever home, he will need a family with patience, a fence, and another dog to learn from.

Champ does well in the kennel at night and while we are at work. It is unlikely that he has been potty trained; however, he has not had any accidents in the house. He has gotten along well with our male and female resident dogs. He is not interested in playing with them (yet), but he does fine around them and really needs them to teach him how to be a dog. Champ is not used to walking on a leash and it scares him to have the leash pulled on. This is something we will be working on at his pace. The Champ we know so far is scared, but seems like a really sweet boy. He is very calm in the house; we hardly know he is here until he comes out of the mudroom. Although scared, he was very cooperative with bathing and everything at the vet. We are working on teaching this boy that he can trust us and that life as a RAGOM dog is good! We think he has a lot of potential!

Champ is now living in the black hills of South Dakota. The 2 dogs he lived with have both passed away at 14 and 14 1/2 years.

About 18 months ago we took another rescue into our home. This dog was 18 months old and she became Champ's best friend immediately. She has taught Champ so much. She taught him how to play with her and with toys.

It is so much fun watching him and his friend, Penny, chase each other around. He also always liked being in the woods (very relaxed when camping with us) and now he lives on 5 1/2 acres of woods. He spends lots of time checking out the wildlife.

We love our Champ and it has been rewarding to see him make progress and learn new things.

We adopted Champ on January 31st of this year. After almost 5 months he is now a different dog than the day we brought him home. He was a very scared dog when we got him. We can't even remember him that way as he is one happy dog now. My 2 dogs have made him feel very welcome and he has learned alot from them. He has gone from never wanting to leave the house to loving his yard and running with his new friends. He has learned his name and some basic commands and we will continue to add more. He accidently got out when family that was visiting us left the garage door open. It was already dark and I thought we would never see him again. Since he was starting to learn his name and the word "come" he did work his way back into the yard. We were so proud of him for coming when called. He doesn't seem to have any bad habits and we have started to trust him out of his crate when away. So far he has been really good. He copies the behavior of my other dogs and the 3 have become fun to watch.

Champ gladly comes to us for petting now and seems to need lots of attention. We are still working on getting him to walk on a leash. This has been our biggest challenge so far. He will let us put the leash on and will walk for only short distances and sometimes decides to just sit down and refuse to walk home. (My husband had to carry him home one time. That must have looked funny).

We love our Champ and are so glad to have added him to the family.

He is the middle dog in the picture.

Guess who learned how to do the stairs? Champ! He now goes up and down the stairs and likes being able to follow us around without being carried. He sleeps in our room without a kennel now, either in a dog bed or on the floor. Although he enjoys being around us and occasionally comes to us for pets, he is not yet a snuggler. He still startles sometimes and may bark when someone comes home or walks around a corner when he's not expecting them or with new people. He eats by himself in the mudroom, where he is less nervous and able to eat without people or other dogs around. As of tomorrow, he will be staying with another foster for a week while we are out of town. We will let you know how it goes! Champ is a sweet boy and has a good heart. He is looking for a family and a fur sibling to show him how great life can be. Are you the family for Champ?

Champ had another week of baby steps. He now spends most of his time with us in our family room or kitchen. He continues to venture into more rooms of our house and has made it to the stairs, but has not yet attempted them. I don't think it's because he can't do them; rather, he is not yet ready to explore other parts of the house on his own. At night, we have been carrying him upstairs to sleep because he started whining when left by himself in our mudroom.

His forever home will need to have children old enough to understand that he is scared, needs time to adjust, and startles easily. We attempted a walk, but the leash continues to scare him--this will be a work in progress. Nonetheless, he has no problem going outside to go potty and coming right back in. It is so promising to see him making progress--whether joining us in our family room or briefly wagging his tail, we are proud of him.
