Charlie 12-134

Profile

In memory of Kinze - Barry

Please welcome Charlie to RAGOM-land. Charlie is a 4-year-old male Golden Retriever. He weighs in at 96 lbs. and has a beautiful medium red wavy coat. His overall length is shorter than a average Golden and has a shorter snout and tail. Very handsome boy. Very white teeth.

Charlie came to RAGOM from a Humane society in central Minnesota. Little was known and no vet records/history. He was thought to have Kennel Cough [dog type of flu] when I picked him up. He was also on a grain-free food because of a said wheat allergy. Charlie was up to date on vaccines including Bordatella which is a Kennel Cough Vaccine. He had been previously neutered and microchipped.

First stop on the way home was at my vet [Dr. Sarah] clinic to get checked out and any possible preventive to protect my other foster and resident dogs from Kennel Cough. Dr. Sarah could find no signs of Kennel Cough in Charlie  [Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]. She did say that the recent Bordatella vaccine could have triggered a cough. She put him on amoxicillin just to be sure. Charlie hadn't had a heartworm check, but that had to wait untill the amoxicillin runs out. He will be going in very soon to have that done. A very good vet visit for a dog with unknown history. Of course, Charlie will be going on a diet and getting long walks to reduce his weight.

Once at my house, he met my resident dog, Ziggy and foster Cheyenne with no problems. We had intros outside before going in the house. Charlie also met the inside and outside cats with no problems.

We went for a walk later and Charlie did fine on a flat collar. He slept confined in my bedroom and bathroom that night and did fine other than he snores.

The next day he seemed to be adjusted pretty well [or so I thought] so I let him have free roam while I went outside for about 2 hours. I did take him out beforehand for potty. When I came back in, he had knocked over the kitchen wastebasket and with help from Cheyenne spread the contents all over the kitchen floor. He also had potty accidents [both] while I was out. I have crated him since then when I leave, other than one time when I confined him in the large bathroom for 3 hours. In the 3 hours he was very busy. He opened every drawer and cupboard and emptied them onto the floor. So, he does have some separation issues at this point. He does great when crated and goes in the crate without being bribed. No other potty accidents in the week plus since then. I take the blame for the only potty accident. Other than that, he seems to be well behaved. He will sit, come when called, and lay down when asked.

Some things I've noticed, is that he will cower if you move your hand fast and will run while cowering if you come up behind him on walks. Draw you own conclusions there.  I think he would play with younger dogs. Ziggy and Cheyenne are older and not real playful. I haven't tried fetch yet but will soon. He is said to like water but I haven't tried that yet either.

I have much more to learn about Charlie. He has been here 10 days, but did spend 20 or more days at the shelter. Some of his behaviors may change as he settles in even better here, so don't judge the book by its cover. Charlie is very affectionate and does want to please.

Here's a summary of what I know now about Charlie. Of course it can change as he settles in longer.

* Charlie is housebroken
* Charlie gets along with dogs and cats very well

* Charlie takes treats gently
* Charlie may not be good around small children just because of his size only
* Charlie requires a crate now, but that could change.

* Charlie needs exercise and a limited diet to get his weight under control

Updates

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

Since today (Oct 10th, 2018) is my 5 year “Gotcha Day”, I thought it would be a great time to update me. I have lived the Golden Life for 5 years now in Rollingstone, Mn with my family and 2 cats.

When I was adopted, they knew I was a special needs dog with PRA and would be blind soon. That has come true, but I can still see bright light at night from a flashlight.

I have learned to use my other senses and can navigate pretty well around by house and at my parent’s sisters house. I spend time there with their 2 labs Elsa and Timber when they are gone. We have a great time and I really love Rachel. When she visits or watches me I jump for joy.

I am a lot thinner than when I was adopted at 90 pounds. I am a sleek 75 pounds now and a lot grayer at 10 years old.

I was camping last weekend near Kellogg. When I went running to Rachel, I ran flat on into a tree and fell over. I think I had a slight concussion, but feel and act fine now.

Thank you for checking in on me. I haven’t been on home visits or events for awhile. I’ll keep checking for opportunities to go to Meet and Greets and home visits in our area.

I will always remember Barry K as my wonderful foster and hope to see him again sometime.  My name is still Charlie, but I am called Charlie Pond because Rachel has a son named Charlie River.

It has been awhile since my last update. I have been busy traveling with my Mom and Dad to lots of places. I’ve been to Houston, Texas to see my Mom and Dad’s Son and family and their new dog and daughter. I had a great time there and got lots of walks. I went camping at Whitewater State Park, and Lazy D near Elba. I love to camp and explore new areas.

Mom and Dad just got back from a bus trip to Washington , DC.  I got to stay with their Daughter Rachel and Keena and Elsa. I really like staying there when Mom and Dad are gone. I went to the vet a short time ago because Dad was concerned I was losing weight quickly. I am down to a svelt 73 pounds. Foster Dad Barry would be proud. I did have 2 masses the vet checked. One is on my front left shoulder and turned out to be a fatty cyst. The other was in my abdomen and Dr. Dammen drained it and sent it in. It was not cancer, but baffled both vets. They think it might be a bladder hernia, but it doesn’t bother me. My vision is pretty much gone and I am learning quickly to use my nose and ears to get around. I might have a little sight, but not too much.

I have become somewhat of a lap dog as you can see and also a beggar. I am looking foreword to seeing FD in December to watch me while my family goes to Houston for Christmas. Thanks for reading my update and I will try to update again soon.    I am called Charlie Pond here because Mom and Dad have a grandson whose name is Charlie River.

Hello everyone!! It had been awhile since I have done an update. I have been busy with trips and home visits with my Dad. I went to Ft. Myers, Florida in March with my family.  We camped our way there in our new Scamp camper. Our first stop was in Paducha, Ky at a nice KOA. We made a stop in Atlanta for lunch and I waited patiently in the car. My Dad rewarded me with a big beef rib. I was really in heaven with that. We stayed at a Motel 6 (they really like dogs) in Valdosta, Ga and went to Ft. Meyers the next day.

As you can see, I got to go swimming and running at a beach near Bonita Springs, Fl. I tried not to drink too much salt water, but did have a little diarrhea. Some really nice people from Canada  took pictures of me and sent them home. Someone else also donated a fresh water shower at the park just for dogs. That felt good. I got to got to 2 restaurants there too. They really are dog friendly. Gave me water and treats while we sat outside.

My Dad and I have been doing more Home visits, especially in SW Wisconsin.  I really like going along and meeting the people and dogs they have. I had a little trouble at one of them because I can’t see very well and the visit was in an upstairs apartment. The applicant brought her dog down stairs to meet me.  I can climb stairs, but get really anxious trying to come down. I do still do see some in spite of the fact the vet said I should have lost my sight by now. I am learning to use my nose and ears more. I have also lost some weight too.

Now that the warm weather has come my allergies tend to act up. I went to the vet when it flaired up and my belly got sore. I took some prednisone for a few days and feel and look much better.  There is an above ground pool in my back yard.  We also set up a solid child’s pool on the deck. I hopped right into the kiddie pool. Boy, that felt good.  I also went for a swim in the big pool and Dad had to help me out at the ladder. I am still a bit itchy and love to “skootch” on my belly in the grass.

I get to go on another trip in July to see my Dad’s Family in Houston, TX. They just got a new puppy I will get to meet.  Lastly, I understand my FB Ziggy isn’t doing well at Barry’s. If dogs could pray, I would pray for Barry and Ziggy.  I had a great time both times I spent there. Hope to update sooner next time.  Charlie 12-134

It has been awhile since I have updated everyone. I have been very busy with my family. I got to go to a Meet and Greet in Rochester. We had a great time with everyone. The trip home was a bit scary with the roads being just terrible. We took our time and got home safely. I got to go on a trip to Backus, Mn to help my family pick up a new Scamp Camper. I got to go inside the factory and explore Backus.

We are all going on a vacation in March to Ft. Meyers, Florida to camp and go to Spring Training for the Twins. Our camper has air conditioning, so I am looking forword to the trip and seeing the Gulf of Mexico. Hopefully, I will meet some new friends there.

I was able to go on my first home visit and had a great time. I met a beautiful 2 year old lady and we really had fun running in the snow and sharing toys. I hope she gets a new companion soon. The cold weather has limited my walks, but I still love to roll and play in the snow in our back yard. As you can see by the photo, I have become somewhat of a velcro dog and love to keep Dad and Mom warm. My sight seems to still be stable and my itching seems better too.

I also have found out I have a voice and like to use it when we get visitors. They tell me to sit and I do, just like I have always done. I like to play with my friends Keena and Elsa and love to play with the tug rope. I have become somewhat of a beggar too. Mom and Dad are really good about only giving me treats in the kitchen and only dog treats. It has been too cold for my bath, but maybe this week-end when it warms up.

Thank you for reading my update and following me. I hope I can see everyone soon.  Charlie 12-134

Happy Holidays and New Year!! Charlie here.  I am really enjoying my life here in Rollingstone (Nature’s Showplace). I really love the snow and roll around in it and throw it in the air. My vision has seemed to stabilize somewhat, but I still have trouble in new places. I had a great Christmas with lots of new people, kids and dogs. I am really tired from all the activity. I was visiting my friends Keena and Elsa at my Dad’s daughter’s house. They were giving their son Charlie a bath and I thought I should join in. Baths are really fun and special for me. I took one yesterday and promptly went out and rolled in the snow.

My itching has really improved and I am re-growing the hair I had rubbed off of my belly.  My Dad got to transport another Charlie (13-430) and told me all about it. I see he is ready for his forever family too. I hope he finds a great home soon. We had a great time at my first Meet and Greet in Rochester as an ambassador. It was great to see all the dogs and people there. My family and I are very happy to see my FD Barry get the praise he deserves. He was really a lot of fun to live with until I got here.

I think I am looking pretty trim and losing some weight. I love to walk, run and ride. I am looking forward to going on a home visit with Dad when one comes up.  Have a great 2014 and we will update you soon.  Charlie, Dick and Maureen

Hi everyone, Charlie here. I have been at my new home a month now and am enjoying my new life. I am meeting lots of new people and animals and love to play with all of them. My vision still gives me problems but I can see distances and in light. When I was on my morning walk in the dark I could see a neighbor’s dog a block away. When Elsa and Keena come over to play, I can sometimes see the tennis ball we play with and can beat them to it. We all played on the tug rope yesterday.

My allergies seem to be better and I don’t scratch myself as much. I love to rough house with my Dad’s adult daughter and my dad. I found one of the cat’s poop yesterday. It made me sick a little later. I think I am losing weight as I am told I look a bit slimmer. I love to go for rides in the car. My Dad tells me we are going to Rochester Saturday for his first meet and greet. I hope to see some new friends and help new people learn about RAGOM and special needs dogs. Dad has been trained for transport and is waiting to be trained for home visits.

Life is good and as you can see I was really relaxed on my visit to Minneapolis to see Dad’s daughter and Griswold. He is a border collie and a lot fun to play with. Thank you for reading my update and maybe I can see you this Saturday.

Charlie is out in a walk right now, so I can update for him.  Charlie is doing extremely well here in Nature’s Showplace. We went to the vet 10 days ago to establish him at Winona Vet. He weighed in at a slim 88 pounds and let Dr. Dennison did a very good exam. He wasn’t too fond of getting his temperature checked, but didn’t get angry. He jumped up on the table in back when they wanted to check his eye pressure which was normal. He eats well and seems to see fairly well especially in bright light and at a distance. Darkness and dim light does affect him. On our early morning walks , he pauses between the street lights and darkness until he is verbally cued. Charlie has made great friends with our daughter’s 2 labs and stays with them if we go away overnight.  He is behaving well and likes to jump in the tub for his bath. He can still find a tennis ball and catch it from a distance. He has been wonderful with our grand kids and friends. He loves to snuggle between your legs and if we are sitting, backs his butt into you to be scratched.

He sleeps well in our bed (a queen) and can find his way down the dark hall late at night. Charlie reminds us a lot of a golden we had years ago and is making us all very happy. We will try to update as we can.  Charlie, Dick and Maureen

Monday, October 14, 2013

We adopted Charlie last week and he is settling in well.  He has met 2 of our  grand children (5 and 2) and their labs (Keena and Elsa) and all is going very well.  He loves being with people and pets and in spite of losing his vision is learning our home and yard very well.  He also has been to my daughter and son-in-law's house and is adapting there. He sleeps like a baby and snores. We have a vet appointment in Winona tomorrow to get him established with our vet. They are excited to meet him.

Charlie is awesome and we are happy and proud to be his forever home. We will update as he progresses. Thanks again to everyone in the adoption process.

Hi Charlie followers, FD here.

Charlie has been adopted. His new family is from southeast Minnesota. They have experience with blind dogs. I am very happy for Charlie and his new family. I think Charlie may have hit the jackpot. Thank you so much, Maureen and Richard. Welcome to your new life, Charlie.

Hi, Charlie here again.

Lots to report since my last update. We had a couple houseguests that FD was dog sitting. They were both puppy mill type girls. I liked both of them.

FD has been taking me on short trips. I love going for rides! We did go for a pretty long ride to Stone Mountain. I wasn't real happy about going there until I realized it was for a RAGOM volunteer meeting and not to be boarded. I had stayed there for a day after my adopter returned me. I loved meeting all the people there and the dogs. I was ready to go home by the time it was over. FD took me and my FB Shep and FS Ziggy to a party for Larry that had run away while with us. I had a good time there also with all the people and dogs.

I had a visitor a while back. It was Nicolle. She was my owner that bought me from a breeder as a 6-week-old pup. I remembered her and was very happy to see her. She had seen me on the RAGOM Available Dogs page and contacted RAGOM to see if she could come and visit me. She cried when she first saw me because she thought I had been put down. She was very happy to see I was doing great and will find a perfect home. She shared some of my baby pics with FD. Everyone says I was an adorable puppy. I think I am adorable now also. A very happy day for everyone.

The other day my FB Shep was adopted. So now it's just me and FS Ziggy in the house (not counting the kitties). I kind of miss Shep. He was a bit silly and fun sometimes.

FD tells me my ability to see things is getting worse. I don't notice that so much and think I get around just fine. FD says that most blind dogs can do everything a dog with sight can. He says sight is our 3rd sense. Smell is 1st and hearing is second. FD says he has a lot to learn yet and that he will share all he learns with anyone that adopts me. He even bought a book called Living with a Blind Dog. He says there is lots of good info and training tips along with tips for humans to deal with their own greif over the dogs' loss of sight. FD says the book will go with me to my adopter(s).

On the bright side, I haven't had any seizures since I have been back with FD. We are both very glad of that. We continue to walk twice every day and I'm slowly getting in better shape and am enjoying the walks now. My allergies still give me grief but the Zertec and baths seem to help. I love the frequent baths. FD just opens the shower door and I'm in. FD says I'm the very easiest dog he's ever seen,to bathe.

Could I be the dog for you? Contact your placement adviser to meet me to find out.

Thanks for checking in on me,
Charlie 12-134

Hi again, Charlie here.

I'm sorry it's been so long since an update. Lots going on here after my temp foster brother bolted out the door.

FD took me, Shep and Ziggy to the meet and greet in Edina. I thought it was ok but really was ready to leave when it was over. Foster brother Shep had someone come just to meet him. Then later Shep's son from his mate's last litter came to meet him. Lots of very happy people and Shep thought it was ok also.

FD's Dad and mom came to visit. I really like both of them. Grandpa always has dog treats in his pockets and we got lots of fruit snacks also.

One day FD left very early to drive to Jamestown ND to pick up 3 puppy mill girls and transport to the twin cities. Grandpa was here with us but a lady named Judy came to let us out.

The next day FD got a call and loaded me up and brought me to the ophthalmologist to get my eyes checked. It was not good news. My vision is less than 50% now and I will be totally blind in less than 6 months. I am already learning to adjust to not seeing many things. My other senses are getting better. FD says that blind dogs can do almost anything a dog with full vision can do once familiar with their surroundings.

A couple of days later FD took Shep to meet with his interested adopter. Things went real well until FD got home.We were dog sitting a puppy mill dog named Larry. When FD came through the door with Shep, FS Ziggy pushed her way out the door and allowed Larry to bolt through the door full speed and disappear before FD could get Shep tied up.

The next 12 days were full of lots of people and dogs coming to help find Larry and catch him. Everyone was very happy and relieved once Larry was safe again. During all the commotion I got a touch of my separation anxiety back. FD is working to get me back to being ok about being left in the house.

Since I now have a known vision problem I have some more needs in my forever home. Here are a few of the new needs:

  • A forever family that is willing to learn how to train a blind dog or a family with blind dog experience.
  • A fenced yard for my safety.
  • No small kids for their safety.
  • A home that doesn't have furniture moved around.

Some of my highlights are:

  • Great with other dogs and cats.
  • Love baths and swimming.
  • Love going for rides.
  • Like my daily walks.
  • Like to just hang out with my people.

If you think you have a special place in your heart and home for me, Charlie 12-134, please contact your placement advisor.

Hi, Charlie here.

Since my last update, I took a trip to the vet's office. I got to meet Dr Becky. She drew some blood from me, which I didn't like at all. She did a thyroid test on me to see if it could be causing my weight problem and my itchiness. Nope, didn't work. She said my blood was too greasy for the test to work. I have to come back tomorrow after fasting to try again. I got my ears checked and swabs taken on both of them. I didn't like that at all either and yipped and stiffened up. Dr Becky wasn't very comfortable around me after that and to be safe put a muzzle on me. I did have an ear infection in one ear. FD gets to put cream ointment in my ear for a week. Dr Becky checked my skin over since FD thought I might have a skin infection. Nope, no skin infection. Dr Becky says my itchy skin is from allergies. I will be getting Claritin to try to help. Banadryl and Zertec had no effect to stop the itchy skin. I get to have baths twice a week with medicated shampoo. I love baths, so this is a good thing, for me anyhow. Dr Becky also checked my eyes because FD thinks I'm not seeing clearly. Dr Becky recommended that I go see a ophthalmologist to get tests done. She said my eyes weren't reacting to light as they should. FD got me set up to get that done sometime soon. FD and I both hope that it is something that can be fixed or at least won't get any worse. I went back to the vet clinic the next morning after not getting fed supper or breakfast. This time my blood wasn't greasy so the test worked. My thyroid tested good. The next step to try and help my itchy skin would be to start taking the steroid Predizone. FD says that is the last resort. I will be trying other food to see if that might help. The salmon-based grain-free I was getting did't help at all. One other good thing from the vet visit was that I have lost 9 lbs! FD thinks I could stand to loose another possibly 10 lbs.

I have been walking further now that I'm starting to get in better shape. We have been going close to 4 miles a day now. FD says that FB [Foster brother] Shep and FS [foster sister] Ziggy can do circles around me yet. It could take a while before I can show them up.

I haven't shown any food or toy aggression at all. I do heed Shep's warning if I get too close to his empty food bowl. I've decided to sleep most of the night in bed with FD. I like to stay close to FD. Other times I sleep or lay on the floor.

FD has been making me sit at the strangest times. I now sit every time before I can eat my food. FD also will just randomly ask me to sit and I will. He says it is a good thing to keep fresh on a command like "sit." I do get pets every time after I sit, so it's a good thing. FD says I have lots more to learn but seem to learn pretty fast.

I'm working on getting FD to bring me and Shep to the meet and greet at Chuck and Don's pet food store in Edina on Sunday. I think he's going to sign us up. Thanks for checking in on me, Charlie 12-134

Monday, July 1, 2013

Please welcome back Charlie 12-134. I fostered him back in March of 2012. He was adopted and was now returned because of a incident with the surrendering owner's chickens.

Charlie is now 5 years old. He weighs in at 95 lbs. I have reduced his food and am getting him on a walking routine. He tires pretty quickly now but should gain stamina gradually, and then I will increase our walking distance. Most times he does have the desire to go on the twice daily walks.

Charlie is said to have a wheat allergy and is fed a grain-free, salmon-based food now. He is still a little itchy, but I haven't given him a bath yet. I use an oatmeal-based shampoo that soothes most skin irritations.

Charlie has had a couple of seizures. They were minor and more than a month apart. He is on no medication for them because they are considered minor. Just something to watch for at this time.

Charlie had separation anxiety when I fostered him last year. His adopter worked him through it and it has completely gone away. Charlie has free roam of the house all the time. No known storm fears either.

Charlie likes being groomed and is said to like baths (I'll find that out soon). Charlie will play with toys some and only chew on bones or other appropriate toys. No counter surfing or food begging either. Charlie did jump up on furniture last year but hasn't done it since he came here last week. Charlie sleeps on the floor next to my bed. He did hop up in the bed with me one morning when I asked him to. Charlie has only barked a couple of times in the week he has been with me. He is really a well-behaved dog.

Charlie gets along with other dogs very well and has no problems with cats. Chickens could be a different story. Charlie likes meeting people and going for rides. I was told he likes to swim also.

Charlie has good recall and will give a "sit" any time asked. I haven't tried any other commands but I do think he would be pretty easy to train since he has "sit" down so good. Charlie did have an invisible fence at his adopter's home so he is trained for that. I don't think he is a flight risk, but I won't leave a dog unattended outside.

If you think Charlie 12-134 could be the dog for you, please contact your placement advisor.
