Chip is a member of the My Three Sons crew.  Chip, his brothers Mike 14-247 and Robbie 14-248, and a bag of dog food were found dumped in a rural road ditch. The local Humane Society was called.  With some effort, the Humane Society was able to capture these boys and bring them to safety.

It was soon apparent that these boys had very little human contact in their short lives.  The boys were very nice, but extremely shy and timid.  The Humane Society thought the boys would do better in a foster home setting so asked for RAGOM's help.

We are so glad they asked for our help!  Chip arrived at our house one scared little boy.  His tail was glued to his belly, the slightest noise sent him scurrying for cover, and he would eat by grabbing a mouthful of food when no one was looking.  The good news is we can see him gaining confidence every day.  By the third day with us he was enjoying leashed walks with his tail up, normal household noises of doors slamming and chairs moving no longer bothered him, and he now eats his meals in the same room as resident Josie with foster mom supervising.

Chip had his RAGOM wellness exam and passed with flying colors.  The poor guy was so nervous when he got to the vet clinic he shook himself right off the clinic scale!  However, by the end of the visit he happily sat on the exam table and even ate the treat he was offered.  He is the perfect weight at 33#.  The entire staff thought he was very brave and handsome.

The Humane Society believes the boys are a Brittany/Golden cross.  Chip's vet said she wouldn't be surprised if he has some Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever in him, which is one of her favorite dogs because it's such a cool name.  :)

Other than being timid and shy, Chip is a pretty easy going guy.  He met resident Josie without a problem.  He was allowed in the cat room at the Humane Society and had no interest in the cats.  Chip isn't excited about going in his crate but once in he's as quiet as a mouse.  We crate him at night, and when we're at work.  He hasn't had any accidents in the house and is quick to take care of business when taken out on a leash.  He does pull on a leash at the beginning of our walks, but after 10 minutes or so he settles down.  Once he trusts you he very gently takes treats from your hand.  He isn't much of a cuddler (yet?) but enjoys being petted and is our constant shadow.

So what does Chip need in his forever home?  Chip will need a family that understands he is going to need time, and lots of love and patience to be the best dog he can be.  He is still learning that the world is good, and people are not scary.  Due to his past he is a pretty big flight risk, so a fenced yard would be best.  He will need another dog in his family to show him the ropes.  If there are children in Chip's family, they must be old enough to understand that he is a flight risk and they must care for him appropriately.  A door left open or a dropped leash could very easily result in a lost dog.

Our sweet Chip Chip met his forever family today.  He was certainly no angel and made sure to show them his worst behaviors but the N family was understanding, knowing that Chip was stressed and uncomfortable with the situation.  They feel confident that once Chip is home and settled in he will understand that he is safe and loved and he will show them the same sweet, quirky, fun-loving boy who we had the pleasure of fostering for the last 2 months.

Lucky for Chip, the N family has experience helping nervous dogs come out of their shell and I have no doubt that soon enough Chip will be enjoying all the attention and love he will get not only from his new mom, dad and two-legged sister but also from his new furry sister, Jazz.

There are so many RAGOM volunteers that played a part in Chip's journey - Rhonda, Rona, Gretchen, Jen, Fred - Chip and I can't thank you enough!

We will miss you sweet Chipper but wish you all the best with your new family!  We will always remember the zoomies you had in the backyard with Barkley and the way you could curl yourself into an amazingly small ball on the couch :)

Hi all.  Chipper Sitter here.  Our time with Chipper is coming to an end this week.  He's been an absolute delight during his visit - a fun loving pup who's always up for a chase around the yard or a walk.

So what will Chipper take away from spending time with the resident pack?  Clearly, he has mastered the art of cuddling and snuggling!

Lots of love goes with you, little man!  We will miss your joyful back yard zoomies!

Chip attending the Meet and Greet event at Chuck and Don's in Edina on 12/7:

Monday, December 1, 2014

Hi all!  Chipper here.  Guess what?!?  I am now visiting my 4th foster home!  Aren't I lucky to be so popular.  Seriously though, my new temp FM is just dog sitting me.  (To keep everyone straight, I call her my Chipper Sitter or CS.)  My "real" FM had surgery and when the opportunity arose for me to visit here for a few weeks - with CS, 3 residents, and another foster - I said "Yes!  Yes!  Yes!  I'll go!"

When I arrived, the residents welcomed me with tail wags, sniffs and smiles.  The other foster is quiet and doesn't say much.  (CS says that he has had a very tough life before coming to Ragom and that it will take lots of time and love for him to become all he can be.)  CS was amazed how quickly I adjusted to my new surroundings after arriving in St. Paul.  After several hours of checking out the house and drinking lots of water, I settled right down.

My new backyard has a high fence and there are gardens and bushes around the perimeter of the yard.  But there's plenty of room between the fence and the bushes to run.  So resident Cubbie and I play Hide and Seek and Catch Me If You Can every day now.  Its wonderful and so fun.

At night, I would like to sleep with CS but the residents have a monopoly on the available bed space.  So, I sleep in my crate in the bedroom, right next to foster Roy.  I'm sure glad he doesn't snore.

More news soon.  Gotta go play!  Chipper

____________

Hi!  CS here.  Chipper is an energetic sweet natured little guy.  He settled in just beautifully to strange surroundings and unfamiliar dogs who, although very friendly, demanded to get acquainted RIGHT NOW.  It didn't seem to bother Chipper at all!

Chipper has found a kindred spirit and playmate in resident Cubbie - which is fun for everyone and uses up lots of energy.  Chipper also seems to have a bit of a soft spot for our resident sweetheart Zozo.  That's no surprise.  All the guys treat her like the princess she is.  In other words, ever so quickly, Chipper is happily blending in to the pack.  CS is amazed at Chipper's flexibility and adaptability.  What a doll.

The guys all helped CS prepare Thanksgiving dinner.  And since 4 of the 5 have Ragom ties (Residents Bear (10-277) and Zozo (12-108)) and fosters Roy (13-347) and Chip), Ragom figured prominently as we gave thanks for all of our blessings.  Hope your holiday was wonderful too!

Chip continues to settle into life here at his foster home.  He is still very nervous at times, sometimes about things that I wouldn't have expected him to be nervous about.  Other times, I am expecting him to be a complete wreck and he surprises me and handles everything in stride...

Take our walks for instance.  We normally walk in the early AM (before work) for 30-45 minutes and then again after I put the kids to sleep in the PM for another 30-45 minutes.  This means it is typically either dark or pretty dark when we walk and the traffic, especially on our residential side streets, is pretty low.

Today, I had the time and opportunity to walk the dogs a little earlier in the day, right at prime traffic time with neighbors all coming home from work.  We leashed up and I headed out, expecting poor Chip to be a wreck with all the cars, kids on bikes, etc... and he handled most of it all in stride (the kids on bikes we'll have to work on).  Cars, motorcycles, loud trucks - nothing seemed to bother him!  Good boy Chip :)

Chip continues to have a blast with our resident dog while romping in the yard.  I managed to get a short video - unfortunately, whenever I try to record them playing Barkley, our resident, will run over for a belly rub so that usually ends the play session!

Chip and Barkley playing

Chip is still Barkley's shadow and is very hesitant to try something new unless he sees Barkley trying it first, but he has also come out of his shell a bit as well.  He has discovered the toys in the house and also loves to find shoes, Matchbox cars, slippers, etc...  Basically, we are finally seeing his puppy side - he is only 2 after all!

Chip has had two potty accidents in the house, both while foster dad was left in charge.  Given that we know foster dad to be less aware of when the last time the dogs were out was I am giving Chip the benefit of the doubt and going with that he is house trained but that he needs to be let out on a regular basis or kenneled when you can't keep an eye on him.  He has not figured out a signal to let us know he needs to go and that is likely part of the issue.

Chip and I will be attending both the Edina Chuck and Don's Meet & Greet as well as Goldzilla this weekend.  We'll be at the Meet & Greet on Saturday from 1-2pm and Goldzilla most of the morning through the foster parade with an assigned time to show off at the foster tent from 10:30-11:30am.  I have no idea how Chip is going to do without our resident dog present so I am just keeping my fingers crossed.  A little nervous and stressed is okay - it's all a learning and growing experience for him at this point.  If he starts to get too stressed though we may have to call it an early day/afternoon... we'll just see.

Thanks for reading up on Chip.  We are enjoying getting to know this little peanut and hope that we can find him a home where they will enjoy him and his antics as well.

Monday, September 8, 2014

Yesterday Chip made the trek to his new foster home in Minnesota.  I am told he was pretty scared during some of the ride but after a bit would settle in and even approach his transporter for kisses and pets during the drive.

We welcomed Chip by simply just letting him be.  He is a nervous little peanut but even through the timid behavior and slinking around the house you can tell he is just a sweet soul.  As soon as everyone is sitting quietly he finds a place, as close to feet or a warm body, as he can to lay down or sit.  I have caught him sitting on my foot many times already.

Chip is still unsure of just about everything in our house but we are hopeful that he'll soon learn the noises and get a bit more comfortable.  We have two young children, 3 and 6 years old, and although I can tell he enjoys having the extra legs and feet around to lay on occasionally he does not appreciate the noise level that often comes with young kids.  His requirements state kids over 10 only but he would probably be okay with younger kids as long as they are like ours (used to dogs, give them their space as needed and are typically on the calm/quiet side).  We will see as time goes on with our kids but I am leaning toward feeling that he will learn to really love them.

Chip loves walks but just about everything spooks him at this point so we are taking extra safety measures (two leashes, one attached to a martingale collar and one attached to a harness) to ensure he doesn't escape.  I have a bad feeling that if he got loose at this point, since he hardly knows us, he would be difficult to catch.  Any new family would have to also commit to keeping him safe until he has better recall and isn't so scared.

Our Golden, Barkley, adores Chip and the feeling seems to be quite mutual.  Their games in the backyard are so fun to watch: Barkley chases Chip, Chip stops - play bows (think head down, butt up!), Chip chases Barkley... this goes on repeat until Barkley is exhausted.  I think Chip would keep going but Barkley isn't used to such a youngster around and will need to build up his stamina!

Chip kennels well.  This first time we kenneled him I was home and just wanted to see how he would do. He barked for about 10 minutes so then I put Barkley in the room with him, shut the door and left again.  He whined a little bit but that was it.  This morning the kids had swimming lessons so we tested out the kennel again.  I am told by my husband that "he barked alot" but then this afternoon while we were out for a bike ride he was again in the kennel and my mom, who lives with us, said she didn't hear a peep!  So, I think the trick is having Barlely in the same room as him to keep him company.  We will continue to kennel him when we are away or he needs a quiet break.  At night, we had him in our bedroom with us and he slept nicely on the floor on a dog bed.

At this point, I am hoping to bring Chip to Goldzilla with me next weekend.  If he continues to improve and get braver each day as he has the last 24 hours by Sunday he should be at least ready for a little debut and I think the experience might be good for him although I am not certain he would agree with me!

Until then, enjoy some new photos of this adorable boy from today's beautiful sunny day.

A few more pictures of Chip to share...

Sunday, August 31, 2014

Chip is doing very well.  We are now thankfully to the point where he can just go out into our fenced in yard and play, sniff (good nose!), listen, do his business, etc.  He goes to the fence and when called, comes back to us most all the time. He loves sniffing around, checking out everything in case he missed something last time. It is a blast to toss a tennis ball or toy out there and just watch him run like the wind.  We play where we chase each other too and wow, he can makes loops like no other.  Such a hoot to watch.  This confidence is huge.  So nice to watch him able to just be free and be a pup.  When time to come in he does so…… a big help is another dog of course.  Once they go in he really does not want to stay behind.  However, I can take him out and play one-on-one and that is fine too.  Very attentive boy.  Beautiful tail of his up and his feathering is oh so pretty.  He is getting used to, after daily rains now, that this big scary towel is not going to do anything but if you want inside, have to have your feet wiped off.  Again a quick learner.  He is fine with free roam in the house when we are home (we are always careful the window doors are locked and garage door down, don’t want anyone to pop over and ‘someone’ slips out.  We do this for all fosters. He likes our corgi, Eddie, doggie bed.  He knows where the wicker basket of toys is and loves to pick some out and scatter.  Mostly soft toys, nylabones, kong, tied socks.  He really enjoys looking out both the doors (glass) and see what is going on in the world and times he will go from one to the other if something interesting going on.

He does great in his crate while we are at work and will go in on his own; he knows the drill and schedule. He would LOVE to sleep in bed with you.  I will post a photo.  Just jumps up and curls up in a small ball behind you.  I feel bad not possible but with 5 other pets, just not good idea.  He crates at night well near us also.  Never have we had a mess in the crates.  One almost potty the 2nd day here and after that, totally fine.  He will now go to the door when he wants out which is impressive.  Again these are smart doggies.  We did go have just a well-visit check yesterday at the vet.  That is still a scary part, going in the truck/car, into a new place (but he actually just hunkered down in the corner under the chair); did fine for the vet nearly the same as in the beginning of this story with previous temp foster RJ.  Nervous but comes around a little bit.  We are working on the leash walking and has been very minimal due to a lot of rain, horrible humidity.  He is remains quite skittish when going….. and this will take repetition.  Now with school back in session and we live near 2, timing is quite important as well.

If you are looking for:  a little lover, small, petite package, smart, funny well behaved little golden/spaniel mix….he is a doll.  He in time will indeed bond to a new family with patience and time.  He will need family who will give him a chance at learning the outside world will not hurt him and small baby steps to go to places, walks and new people.  A huge bonus for this Chipper boy is his age.  Very young to learn that this new rescue life will be great and there are people and families out there who are looking to help a rescue dog in need and see just how wonderful these results for mistreated/dumped/scared doggies can be!  You can grow with these babies and have a full heart of love and respect for these rescued, to-be-rehomed, golden dogs.  Please contact your placement advisor if you are interested  in Chipper boy.  Also, again, any donations/sponsorship is so greatly appreciated!  Smile Just adore  this little boy! Do you?

A quick update on our “Chipper” boy. He does better every day! He is so very smart and really picks ups ‘commands’ well. He is such a beauty and has a outstanding personality. He really uses his nose, on ground or in the air soaking in all that life has to toss out at him. When he found the bird bath he thought that was pretty cool it held water. He is not afraid of textures but we are still learning different noises and sounds, as with most all young dogs. He walks pretty good, still pulls some because that world out there is pretty big. Two leashes of course are used, on his blue ‘martingale’ collar so they cannot slip out and a second one on his soft “Puppia” vest harness. Works great together and very secure, which these doggies need. We are now having some ‘racing/crazy’ time inside with toys. Such a hoot to watch! Tosses up in air, downstairs, down the hall.........has a blast. Likes ice cubes but so far will not try a carrot. Chip is definitely already making himself home and getting quite confident. He enjoys both Tim and I. Our youngest adult daughter comes over and he looks, waits, and after a short time, comes over to her when she calls him! So Chip is making leaps and bounds and will thrive just fine in a new home who will take patience and time to work with him and yes, you cannot help but love him!

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Chip has recently arrived at our home in Sioux Falls, SD for foster care.  A HUGE thanks to his first temp fosters Rhonda & Bruce!  What a fantastic job you have done with him to get him started.  As you can see he is an adorable little boy with a lovely personality to match.  For a pup with a very rough beginning, he is advancing wonderfully.  He is coming more and more out of his shell and wanting to just be a puppy and play, be pet and loved.  This is a little guy who if you let him, would sure be a lap dog and would more than likely love to curl up with you at night.  He is completely housetrained and will ask/bark to go outside when it is time.  He sleeps all night in his crate and is quiet.  We used a large wire crate and he enjoys the soft large pillow and blanket, along with some soft ‘friends’ to sleep with.  A kong with some peanut butter froze inside is a good snack to occupy him while we are gone at work. The current schedule for him is I am gone from approximately 6:30 to noon each day.  He does just fine.  Very happy to see you when you get home, goes right outside and does his business. On a leash yet of course, he really likes exploring the back yard, which ours is fenced.  He listens to every new sound, cocks his cute little head in wonder.  He is doing great getting more and more confident in me and with himself and crew.

We have 2 other dogs and 3 cats.  He is fine with all of them.  Just sniffs the cats (who stick around) and goes about for more play and smells. He has a good appetite and he, along with the other 2, eat at their respective ‘stations’ in the morning and evening.  He wants to ‘gobble’ just a little to make sure the food doesn’t disappear. We will slowly being commands but for now, we are working on just being trusting and less worried which again, he is doing great.  Chip is a very intelligent pup and he is going to make some family and awesome boy.  You have to just love his petite size!

I want to thank the J’s again for a GREAT job taking him in on a short-term basis until a perm (like us) foster could be located! Note:  Not all fosters are able to readily permanently foster a rescue dog in need, but are willing to temporarily foster (due to other commitments, schedules, family issues, etc.). How great is that?  It is all about the dog.  Are you ready for the cutest, petite, little boy who loves his humans???  He is a sponge and is learning so much each day.  He will soon bond with a family once they work with him and guide him.  Please contact your placement advisor!  One sweet little boy.
