Doobie 06-514

Profile

11/21/06: Doobie is a three-year-old Golden Retriever who was surrendered due to financial/living condition issues. Doobie is a big, 78-pound boy who's muscular and stocky and likes attention. He's a good dog, according to the prior owner, and gets along fine with kids, other dogs, and cats. He has always been an indoor dog, is housetrained, and had run of the house when the owner was gone. He does not have any destruction, anxiety, or aggression issues. Doobie likes to play tug-of-war with Scrappy 06-515 (his son by way of an accidental encounter with a female Lab owned by another member of the family).

Doobie is very loving and happy and will make a good family dog--he just needs a little obedience training. He is not yet neutered, but that is scheduled for Friday, 11/24.

Hello,

I wanted to let you know that we recently said goodbye to Doobie who I adopted over 8 years ago. Doobie always had a smile on his face but unfortunately, time had taken away his strength and arthritis in his spine had made things very difficult for him and left him in pain. He brought happiness to our lives every day and we are comforted that he has been reunited with his sisters Daphne and Roxy.

Doobie's adoption was finalized on Wednesday, Feb. 14th. His dad's update to us the next day said that Doobie seemed to be settling in. He had met some of the neighbor dogs on a late night walk and was a very friendly boy, he was enjoying all his new toys, took his ear meds like a good boy, and had explored his new home. Doobie's new dad said that he let the Doober sleep with him on the bed (Doob's favorite spot) for half the night but had to kennel him eventually. I think his exact words were, "He was hogging the bed"!! Ah, yes, that sounds like our Doobie boy!!

We couldn't be happier for this energetic, ball crazy, handsome boy. You will be missed here in your foster home Doobie!!

Doobie enjoyed a good game of tug with the resident Golden on his last day (Doobie is on the left), and posed with his new ball and new dad for his last RAGOM picture!

Thanks to RAGOM, Christi, Frank, Konnie and Paul for helping us find this boy his new forever home!!

We are learning more about Doobie each day. Here are some of the updates:

He seems to get a little nervous or upset when kenneled while we are out. I think he really hasn't been kenneled much since he is housetrained, so maybe that's the issue. But, when we got home this evening from being out to dinner Doobie was SOAKED with his own drool (YUK!). He doesn't seem to have this problem at night when we are in the room with him so maybe it's an anxiety thing... not sure.

We have discovered that although we previously thought he was gentle with his toys, boy were we wrong! He has become the "toy destroyer" of the house! We have had to take all the stuffed toys away for fear of them getting gutted! He is also ball OBSESSED!! When I say obsessed, I mean truly, 100%, loves his tennis balls! If he loses one under a couch or dresser he will go nuts until you get it for him! Talk about driven! Maybe he needs to join a flyball team or something?! So, we have taken all the balls away except when we are playing with him. He still has bones and rope toys to chew on, which he loves. He also seems to settle down more without all the toys around so I think it was a good thing to only have them out at playtime. Otherwise, he spends the entire day just chasing balls all over the house.

He has discovered a rubber chicken toy that our resident dog isn't a real fan of. It isn't something we let him have for too long as we are scared that he'll tear it apart and then he'll be sad that it has to go in the garbage! But, when he does get to play with it he loves to just carry it around and make it squeak. He really does have quite the cute personality!!

Doobie would love to find his forever family. He is ready for somebody to spend all their spare time playing with him and teaching him. He loves our little mini-training sessions and has mastered the "sit" and is working on "wait". What a good boy he is!! Email placementatragom [dot] org if you would like to be considered for this big lover boy!

My husband came home last night and first thing he said when he met Doobie at the door was "Wow, he is really cute!" And cute he is. He is also now all up to date on his vet. work. Doobie does have a pretty nasty yeast infection in his right ear, but we now have some drops and ear cleaner to help get the situation under control. He will need an ear re-check and a booster for his distemper vaccination in 3 weeks, but other than that, he is one healthy boy.

Other things we have learned in just the short time he's been here:

Doobie LOVES toys! He just can't get enough toys into his kennel to claim as his own (see pic)! We are lucky our resident Golden, Beck, is more than happy to share with Doobie. Doobie likes to just carry the balls and small squeaky toys around the house with him, giving a squeak every now and then to let us know where he is in the house.

Doobie also LOVES his kennel. He will go in there numerous times throughout the day to just lay and chew on a toy.

Sleeping in his kennel at night is a different story though. I don't think that Doobie has been asked to spend the night in his kennel in quite some time, but it is tradition here to have foster dogs sleep in their kennels - at least until we're sure we can trust them not to get into anything while we are fast asleep! He did finally settle in for the night, but every once and a while we'd hear him whining and scratching at the kennel door. I think he'll catch on though as he really doesn't mind the kennel itself, but rather I think he'd much prefer to spend the night on the bed. :)

Speaking of beds... Doobie found another thing he loves - the BED! We are lucky to have a resident dog that just has never been much of a couch/bed dog. He will come up if asked but doesn't really enjoy being there. Doobie on the other hand just loves being up on the couch or bed. We have been asking him to stay off as I am not sure what his adoptive home will want... but with how much he enjoys the comfy bed, I think some training would be required to get him to learn that the bed and couches are off limits.

We did have an accident last night just before bedtime. I had removed the Gentle Leader so the boys could eat dinner and then play and I am not sure if Doobie just wasn't sure which door was out yet or what, but he squatted and peed, right in the middle of the living room. So, a firm "no" and immediately outside he went, where he finished the business I had so rudely interrupted! We haven't had any problems today and he's been having the run of the house since this morning.

I think that Doobie's best fit would be a family that has time to spend with him. He is a very energetic three year old and just loves to play!! I think he would enjoy learning how to fetch. He does run after the ball and get it--it's the return we'd have to work on! He does need to lose 5-8 lbs so an active family who will walk or run with him besides just playing would be ideal. We don't have a fenced yard and Doobie has been just fine on a tie-out or leash, so I don't think that a fenced yard is a must. But, he doesn't seem to respond very well to his name so he would definitely need to be on leash until he learns a better recall. Doobie has been getting along swimmingly with the cats, so that shouldn't be an issues in his new home. He will also need lots of toys and things to keep him busy. He doesn't seem to be a toy destroyer yet, so even the stuffed ones would be fun for him!

I think that Doobie is more than ready to find his forever home and I am hoping to find that for him soon. He is a very smart, adorable, loving boy who just needs the rough edges smoothed out. If you think you could be the right family for this big lover boy, just email placementatragom [dot] org and let them know!!

2/6/07: Doobie has arrived at his new temporary foster home and all I can say is, "What a lovebug!" He has just arrived so our knowledge of him so far is limited, but so far so good.

Doobie has met the resident Golden, Beckham, and doesn't yet seem too interested in playing - exploring is much more important right now! They have given each other the once over and no problems at all. Doobie seems very laid back. He has also met the resident brave kitty, Jack, and passed the kitty test with flying colors. Now, keep in mind our Jack kitty is a very brave boy who will stand his ground. So, this being said, I am not sure how Doobie will do with a kitty that runs. Our other kitty, the scaredy cat, has yet to show her face since Doobie arrived.

Currently, Doobie is resting quietly at my feet. I will have him on his Gentle Leader and tether leash until we make sure he is housetrained and trustworthy. We took a short walk after he was dropped off so that he could do his thing, and let's just say that he is still getting used to his Gentle Leader (can you say bucking bronco?!). He is very smart though and by the end of our walk he was really getting the hang of it.

It seems that Doobie has been worked with a bit as he sort of understands "sit" and "down", possibly even "stay". He certainly could use a refresher course though and I am sure would pick things up very quickly. He will definitely need a family who is willing to help him become the best dog he can. He is still a young three years old and is a very handsome boy with energy to spare! I'll bet he would make a great walking partner for somebody who needs a little something to get them motivated to get out of bed in this cold weather!

Stay tuned for updated pictures and more as we learn all we can about this big boy. We are headed to the vet tomorrow morning for a check-up and to make sure all his vaccinations are up to date. If all goes well, Doobie will be meeting and greeting at PETCO in Woodbury on Saturday. So, plan to come and meet the dog of your dreams! If you just can't wait until then and if you are an approved applicant, email placementatragom [dot] org and we'll set up a private meeting :)
