My husband came home last night and first thing he said when he met Doobie at the door was "Wow, he is really cute!" And cute he is. He is also now all up to date on his vet. work. Doobie does have a pretty nasty yeast infection in his right ear, but we now have some drops and ear cleaner to help get the situation under control. He will need an ear re-check and a booster for his distemper vaccination in 3 weeks, but other than that, he is one healthy boy.
Other things we have learned in just the short time he's been here:
Doobie LOVES toys! He just can't get enough toys into his kennel to claim as his own (see pic)! We are lucky our resident Golden, Beck, is more than happy to share with Doobie. Doobie likes to just carry the balls and small squeaky toys around the house with him, giving a squeak every now and then to let us know where he is in the house.
Doobie also LOVES his kennel. He will go in there numerous times throughout the day to just lay and chew on a toy.
Sleeping in his kennel at night is a different story though. I don't think that Doobie has been asked to spend the night in his kennel in quite some time, but it is tradition here to have foster dogs sleep in their kennels - at least until we're sure we can trust them not to get into anything while we are fast asleep! He did finally settle in for the night, but every once and a while we'd hear him whining and scratching at the kennel door. I think he'll catch on though as he really doesn't mind the kennel itself, but rather I think he'd much prefer to spend the night on the bed. :)
Speaking of beds... Doobie found another thing he loves - the BED! We are lucky to have a resident dog that just has never been much of a couch/bed dog. He will come up if asked but doesn't really enjoy being there. Doobie on the other hand just loves being up on the couch or bed. We have been asking him to stay off as I am not sure what his adoptive home will want... but with how much he enjoys the comfy bed, I think some training would be required to get him to learn that the bed and couches are off limits.
We did have an accident last night just before bedtime. I had removed the Gentle Leader so the boys could eat dinner and then play and I am not sure if Doobie just wasn't sure which door was out yet or what, but he squatted and peed, right in the middle of the living room. So, a firm "no" and immediately outside he went, where he finished the business I had so rudely interrupted! We haven't had any problems today and he's been having the run of the house since this morning.
I think that Doobie's best fit would be a family that has time to spend with him. He is a very energetic three year old and just loves to play!! I think he would enjoy learning how to fetch. He does run after the ball and get it--it's the return we'd have to work on! He does need to lose 5-8 lbs so an active family who will walk or run with him besides just playing would be ideal. We don't have a fenced yard and Doobie has been just fine on a tie-out or leash, so I don't think that a fenced yard is a must. But, he doesn't seem to respond very well to his name so he would definitely need to be on leash until he learns a better recall. Doobie has been getting along swimmingly with the cats, so that shouldn't be an issues in his new home. He will also need lots of toys and things to keep him busy. He doesn't seem to be a toy destroyer yet, so even the stuffed ones would be fun for him!
I think that Doobie is more than ready to find his forever home and I am hoping to find that for him soon. He is a very smart, adorable, loving boy who just needs the rough edges smoothed out. If you think you could be the right family for this big lover boy, just email placement

2/6/07: Doobie has arrived at his new temporary foster home and all I can say is, "What a lovebug!" He has just arrived so our knowledge of him so far is limited, but so far so good.
Doobie has met the resident Golden, Beckham, and doesn't yet seem too interested in playing - exploring is much more important right now! They have given each other the once over and no problems at all. Doobie seems very laid back. He has also met the resident brave kitty, Jack, and passed the kitty test with flying colors. Now, keep in mind our Jack kitty is a very brave boy who will stand his ground. So, this being said, I am not sure how Doobie will do with a kitty that runs. Our other kitty, the scaredy cat, has yet to show her face since Doobie arrived.
Currently, Doobie is resting quietly at my feet. I will have him on his Gentle Leader and tether leash until we make sure he is housetrained and trustworthy. We took a short walk after he was dropped off so that he could do his thing, and let's just say that he is still getting used to his Gentle Leader (can you say bucking bronco?!). He is very smart though and by the end of our walk he was really getting the hang of it.
It seems that Doobie has been worked with a bit as he sort of understands "sit" and "down", possibly even "stay". He certainly could use a refresher course though and I am sure would pick things up very quickly. He will definitely need a family who is willing to help him become the best dog he can. He is still a young three years old and is a very handsome boy with energy to spare! I'll bet he would make a great walking partner for somebody who needs a little something to get them motivated to get out of bed in this cold weather!
Stay tuned for updated pictures and more as we learn all we can about this big boy. We are headed to the vet tomorrow morning for a check-up and to make sure all his vaccinations are up to date. If all goes well, Doobie will be meeting and greeting at PETCO in Woodbury on Saturday. So, plan to come and meet the dog of your dreams! If you just can't wait until then and if you are an approved applicant, email placement
ragom [dot] org and we'll set up a private meeting :)
