Hi, this is Duke. As you can see by the picture. he found the bed within about 24 hours of getting to our house. I'll start this and Duke will probably finish it.

Duke came on Friday night and he has been a joy ever since he came here. He has already started sleeping in our bed and as of this writing, there have been no squabbles with our resident dogs, two males and a female. Actually, last night we were watching TV and by 9:00 all sixteen legs were asleep. He sleeps very soundly and goes to sleep right away. He had been on Purina E/N at the Humane Society and we are slowly weaning him to Taste of the Wild-Salmon, and so far he seems to be tolerating it okay. There are a couple of things that need to be tweaked. He does get anxious to go out, but if you tell him, "Wait," and then have him go out, it's usually a better deal. He is definitely a Velcro dog and loves the attention, and also will watch TV with you and be anywhere that his folks are. He is a a sweetie and now is a master at going in and out of his kennel. He really likes to be around and follow me whenever I go somewhere. He also knows basic commands such as sit, down, kennel and "no" which indicates to me that he was someone's pet as well. I'll let him say a bit now.

Hi, Duke here.....I found the bed in the second bedroom of my temporary foster's home. It is so comfortable here and also when we go to sleep, two of their resident dogs and me also crowd into the bed. It's pretty crowded, but it's comfortable. My FM says right now that I am a bit on the thin side and they are trying to fatten me up a little bit. The food here is good and I really like going out in the side yard and just running around and checking things out. I like to be around FD as well because he hangs out in the basement and there are a lot of things to look at and check out down there. I have my vet appointment on Wednesday to make sure that everything is okay and I know that I have an ear infection. FM has to put nasty drops in my ears, but I do get a treat when she does it, so it's not so bad. Well, that's all for now. I'll send you another update in a few days, probably after I go to the vet on Wednesday.

Well, our A/C is on the fritz. Thank goodness we have a reserve for the next couple of days while we wait for the repair guys, and Duke is patiently waiting as well.

I will tell you that while this buddy of ours might have a Lab body, he sure is Golden all the way through with his personality. He likes to put his paw up, likes to be touching you and also following you around. He also likes to snuggle and he is learning to respect boundaries. He likes to nuzzle, but he is learning that sometimes folks like to just "chill out." He also likes slippers, toys, slipper socks, mustard containers, and every time I try to get a picture of one of these things in his mouth, he knows I'm trying to take his picture and he takes it out and leaves it on the floor and goes to something else. He is a true Golden, though, as far as affection and companionship. Sometimes Duke and Casey (one of our residents) vocalize to each other when they are first put in their kennel; mostly it is at food time, but it is not an aggressive bark and I think they are both just letting everybody else know that, "Hey, we're eating and this is my food." We feed them in their kennels at this point. If Duke goes into a home with another dog, one possibililty would also be to feed them separtately so they can't see each other eat. We have also started feeding Duke upstairs as well, which seems to work out great. He does like to lick as well and I think that is his way of showing affection. All three of our dogs have different personalities and he has gotten along with all of them at this point. I think he would be fine either way in a home with another dog, but I also think that he could be a mighty great solo guy as well. We have not tested him around cats yet, but knowing his personality, this might not be such a bad thing. More to come in a few days from the H house. He will definitely make a great addition to any family.

Boy, I tell you that Duke is definitely making himself at home. He likes to explore and try out new things, for sure. He found the recycling in the hallway and as soon as I turned around, he brought a present to me of an empty milk bottle in his mouth. The next time, I will have to get a picture of it. I think he sees his foster brother doing things and he thinks....boy, I should do that as well. He definitely likes to welcome you home with a lick and a paw. He does like to sometimes get into things that might not belong to him like milk bottles, slipper socks, oven mitts, but there has been no harm done and our resident dogs, I swear, give him tips. He loves to sleep in the bed and when he goes to sleep, by gosh, he really goes to sleep and doesn't move. We were on a walk the other day and I had him on a slip lead and I had also tried him with just a martingale collar. I think that Duke is a slip lead guy. He is so quiet sometimes and as I type this, he is laying beside me on the kitchen floor as happy as you please. He does need to be respectful of some boundaries, but he is learning that as well. The best thing is that he listens to you and right away if he gets something he is not supposed to or do something he is not supposed to do, he knows right away what happened and he feels bad. He is also gaining weight which is a good thing and the next picture will be a better one that shows he has gained weight. I think you could take him anywhere and he would be happy... Talk to your placement advisor if you want an all-around good guy that will do everything from watching TV with you to going and visiting your horses....which he will be doing probably this weekend. That should be funny.... Stay tuned from Duke and the H family.

I think the kitchen is Duke's favorite spot, but then again...any spot is his favorite as long as he is by somebody. I'm here to tell you that when he sleeps, he sleeps like a rock and doesn't move a muscle. I think he likes to be near people anywhere he is at the time. We are working on a few things like the word "down," that "down" means down, also since he has been taking some lessons from his foster brother about putting the front paws on the counter, we are working on getting that out of the mind...He has got the most even-keeled and mild-mannered temper that I have seen in a long time. I have only heard him bark one time while he has been here. He is a bit on the thin side, but he sure likes to eat and since we have him on four cups of food per day, he is in his glory!!! The little quirks that he has are far miniscule compared to the positive things about him. Gentle, loyalty, smiles, quiet, happy, content, gets along with all of our other dogs, hasn't been around cats or kids, but maybe that might not even be an issue. If you want a four-legged member of your family that will be flexible, happy, easy to be around, then Duke is your guy. I will say that he does tend to pull on the leash, so a slip lead is probably a better thing for him and while a fence would be good for him, he can probably be outside without a fence if he is supervised and with "his folks." Right now, he is sleeping away as I type this and he is very contented...He's a joy to be around. Stay tuned. We'll let you know what happens over the weekend.

Wow, Duke went to his first meet/greet in Northfield today (5/18). It was so much fun and for sure he had to let everyone know he was there because he peed on the RAGOM sign, peed on the chair, and also dang near hit Erin with his spray, but she lucked out and didn't get hit. It could have been part nerves as well, I think, because that was his first one as well. He had a lot of fun as well, though, and got to meet Harley, Sandy, Beau, Hope, Kelly....they were all great and they were all playing, running, and just generally getting to know each other. Duke was very tired when he got home, but there were people petting him all the time. He is a diamond in the rough for sure. I made sure that a mention was made that he does like to counter surf and he also likes to explore things that don't belong to him like toilet paper and Crocs, both by chewing and shredding. He is gaining some weight, though, because we have him on four cups of food per day, something that he really doesn't mind, and who would mind getting more food!!!! He is going to make a great additional family member as he is more than willing to please and he tries very hard. He likes being around other dogs as well and is just as flexible running around as sitting down and watching TV. I will tell you that he does need to work on his jumping up when he meets people, but we are working on that as well. Duke had a great time meeting people and the people that met him really liked him as well; he is a sure pleaser..... That's all for today. Stay tuned for the next antics of Duke.

Oh boy, it's so nice to see the green grass and to be able to be outside for more than a minute that foster red brother over in the far corner is teaching our Duke some bad habits, mostly counter surfing which they are both good at and we are working to break that habit. Duke went to the vet today and he passed with flying colors. He is a bit on the thin side as you can see, but one of the things we are doing is definitely to fatten him up and I'm pretty sure that he does not mind it a bit; that means more food for him which is always a good thing. He got his first heartworm pill tonight and I'm pretty sure he thought it was a treat. I've started to call him "shadow dog" because he likes to follow you around and definitely likes to see what is going on and perish the thought that he thinks we will miss something. Right now, he is laying down on the living room floor listening to the TV.....I don't think he has a mean bone in his body. I think he just likes hanging out with people and LOVES AFFECTION AND ATTENTION. The past few days, he has slept in his kennel in our room; I think it's because between our three resident nutballs, there isn't that much room. (Heck, there isn't even that much room for me!!!) Anyway, he knows he is welcome on the bed, but I give him a treat and he goes in his hut, his choice at this point. He does like having toys and things to chew on as well. Casey (one of our residents) will share his toys with Duke as well. When I leave for work, it's the cutest sight to see all four of them in their huts, and Casey and Duke with their toys as well in their huts. He's very accomodating to our three dogs as well and I do think that he would do well as the only dog or with other dogs as well. I think he is Mr. Takes-Whatever-Comes-My-Way for the most part. He will make a great addition to any family. You will have unconditional love and the best brown eyes that I have seen for a long time. That's all from the H house tonight. Stay tuned for the rest of the week.
