Echo 13-181

Profile

July 14, 2013

Echo is a nine-year-old purebred Golden Retriever. He weighs 71 pounds and he has a beautiful long flowing coat. He is light colored. He could afford to lose a few pounds, but his weight isn't too far above where it should be. He was surrendered to RAGOM because of a divorce.

Echo has had quite a week. On Sunday, July 7 he started his day in his kennel in North Dakota. He was picked up by a RAGOM volunteer and was flown in a small plane to Willmar, Minnesota. He spent the night with the pilot and his family. On Monday , he was picked up by yet another volunteer and driven to his temporary foster home in Minneapolis. The people in this home bathed him and groomed him. He also did well with the kids in both the pilots house and in his temporary foster home. On Friday , he went to the vet where he had several shots, pokes and a blood draw. He is now up-to-date on his shots, microchipped and the results of his fecal and heartworm test were negative. Also, since he's a senior, a senior panel was done and his results look good there too. Then, finally, on Friday , he went to his permanent foster home. He was introduced to the two resident male dogs and one visiting female...all goldens. He met everyone nicely. He also totally ignored the cat. We have learned that he is housebroken and crate-trained.

Because of the incredible number of changes this guy has endured over the past week, we are just letting him chill out for a few days. He has been eating and going outside on a regular basis. He's also has had a little more grooming...mostly trimming of his feet and nails and some matt removal. The first night he arrived, we had an a long and thunderous storm which came in waves and lasted from abut 2:30 a.m.  until after dawn. Echo did not make a peep. It probably helped that none of the other dogs cared either. But it is safe to say that Echo does not have storm anxiety.

As Echo settles in, I'll write more. I think with all that has happened to him, his true personality will take a while to emerge. Check back in a few days for more on Echo.

Updates

I think in my last update I stated Echo would not venture in the bedrooms very often....well guess who now sleeps in one of the bedrooms? Echo has evolved into a totally different dog than the one that arrived here just over a week ago. He's a totally typical golden retriever.

He has a nice recall in the fenced yard. Other than that, he doesn't seem to have had much obedience training. We are working on sit and down....but who knows what the next week will show us. Attached is a picture of the three goldens....Echo is on the left. Check back often for more updates on Echo.

What a difference a week makes! Echo is the nicest dog and he is now just as pushy as the two residents. I'm thinking there could be a happy medium between the the way he was and the way my guys are, but he's come full circle...pushy golden nose, an occasional bark if he thinks you're ignoring him, even the golden paw. Toys have no chance to stay in the toybox and he always has something in his mouth. He has now ventured into the bedrooms, but he still doesn't stay there long...so I'm thinking that was the way it was at his original home.

Echo is settling in nicely. He is super nice and is somewhat aloof. We aren't used to that aloofness in the goldens we foster....certainly the two residents could learn a little restraint from him. He has graduated to sleeping wherever he wants...which so far has been in the living room....another behavior we aren't used to. He is still crated when the humans are away. He's extremely laid back and so far hasn't gotten enthusiastic about anything...not even his meals. It's been too hot so we haven't tried walking or playing ball, but he ignores the toys in the house. I'm sure his personality will emerge as he feels more comfortable.

He is allowing me to take care of his ear infections. He doesn't like the twice daily meds, but he doesn't try to hide or get away when I get the tube of ointment out. Very few of my foster dogs have not had ear infections, so it was no surprise when the vet said he had yeast in both ears. He also has an obvious cataract on one of his eyes. Not incredibly surprising either given his age. It's not a problem at all, nor is it expected to ever become an issue. Check back for more updates as we continue to get to know him.

He doesn't like to pose for the camera..so his photos aren't the greatest as he's always moving.
