In honor of our boy Tonka (#15-209 TD) and his first Christmas with us. We are so grateful to RAGOM!

I am proud to introduce Amy 16-272. Amy (aka Elsa) came into RAGOM’s loving care on December 9, 2016 as a retired breeding dog. She is a 5 year-old purebred golden retriever and is one of the sweetest girls we’ve fostered in quite a while. She is up to date with shots and preventatives but still has some medical work ahead of her. She came in with a very bad ear infection and skin so bad, they thought she had ring worm and she also has round worm. She is getting antibiotic drops for her ear infection, some medicine to help her skin and will finish her last dose of de-wormer the end of December. She will also get spayed the last week of December…No More Puppies for this beautiful mama.

She is more outgoing than other dogs we have fostered. She didn’t hide in a crate, didn’t startle at loud noises, or have difficulty with stairs. She is timid and submissive in her behaviors though. She is very much a Velcro dog-following us wherever we go. She found our toy bin and has a few favorites she is experimenting with. She really wants our resident dog to play but our resident will have none of that… she doesn’t play with anyone or anything! They are, however, getting along just fine.

She isn’t house broken, but we have only had one accident. She lets us know she has to go to the bathroom by being antsy and will go to the door sometimes. She is a puppy in a dog’s body meaning she has some training needs- like counter surfing isn’t allowed and Christmas decorations are different from the stuff toys in the bin! Overall, she is quite amazing considering she knew no other lifestyle than being in a crate having puppies. She is very smart and is eager to please. We are taking the training slow to allow her to build trust and confidence but she has picked up sit, down and kennel very quickly. At night, she is crated and now that her ears are feeling better and her skin is less itchy, she sleeps pretty well. I do get up with her to let her out if she gets restless and generally she has had to go. She is wonderful about going right back to sleep. She has adapted our 5:30 wake up and feeding schedule. On the weekend, we had her join us on the bed and she loved it. Now she hangs out there while we shower before work.

It took her about a week to be able to eat and didn’t want just dry kibble, but we have transitioned off the canned food and onto dry with little difficulty now. She has a few favorite treats and has discovered different chews and frozen peanut butter as treats when she gets crated while we are gone. She seems to have some mild discomfort being crated while we are gone and moved her to a sturdier crate for those times. As time goes on, this seems to be getting better. She has no issues with being in a crate at night in our room.

Amy (Elsa) has blossomed into a wonderful addition and would be staying with us if we had a more active dog to help her become the best version of herself. For that reason, we will be looking for a forever home that can offer her just that. We see so much potential in her so early and want the best for her. She will need a home familiar with retired breeders and an active resident dog. If you can offer her that, please consider bringing this love into your family.

This is my favorite update to write…Amy/Elsa was adopted today!  We are so thankful to the W-T family for wanting to add Amy/Elsa to their family.  They were everything we hoped Elsa would find in a forever home including a confident, playful resident dog.  We actually knew the minute they walked in and Amy/Elsa stayed in the room with ears up and tail wagging-even reaching out to both D&D.  The deal was sealed when we watched her retrieve a tennis ball after watching their RD and then with a little prompting, played tug with the RD.  Enjoy your new life Amy/Elsa…you deserve all the best and your new family and fur sister will give you just that!

It has been a week of good/bad news for Amy/Elsa. First the good news…she is really opening up to strangers. We have spent some time introducing Amy/Elsa to new people and situations this past week. She met my co-worker’s 2-year-old son Davie and did very well. She was a bit overwhelmed when they first arrived but curious enough to stay out in our main area with us. She eventually laid down and let everyone give pets and cautiously took treats. Davie made his way over to her for a hug which got a tail wag out of her. Because she is still cautious, I would want her supervised around young children, but overall, she did well with a young one.

We then took her on a couple of outings-not only to meet people, but also to show her that car rides don’t always mean you are going to the vet. She went to a couple dog-friendly stores and met LOTS of people. Initially, she followed our resident dog very closely but once she started getting pets, she let her guard down, untucked her tail and wagged it! She would walk away from people, only to return to them and nudge their hand to get a pet. What a trooper!

Now for the bad news…While she learned that going in the car can mean there is a fun place at the end of the ride, her tummy just doesn’t handle the ride very well. Time to get the car detailed. She readily followed her foster sister into the car and laid down quietly for the entire ride. That may be part of the problem. Next ride we will have her sit in a seat rather than on the floor to see if that helps her tummy.

We return to the Vet this week for follow up on her ear infection and de-wormer. Stay tuned for the results. I’ve added a couple of pictures of her favorite spots to hang out…She loves to lay on her back next to the couch. In the mornings while we are getting ready for work, you will find her hanging out on the bed. Last night, she even talked foster mom into letting her sleep all night on the bed…She did darn good. If she gets restless, I tell her to crate up and she goes right in her kennel (foster mom is a light sleeper) The last few nights, she has slept through the night until our normal wake up time. I think she is settling in.

Amy/Elsa has had a busy holiday week and she handled all the extra excitement pretty darn well. She was a bit timid around my parents when they were here for Christmas, but she remained curious and did not retreat to escape the hub-bub. She did find a couple of interesting spots to watch the activities.

She found solace from her foster sister Jasmine, which is why it will be important for her to go to a forever family with another dog, preferably a playful one that will help bring out the best in her.

Amy/Elsa was also spayed this week and is doing beautifully with her recovery. It took her a couple of days to get her spunk back after the surgery. You can see that she sometimes just needed to rest wherever her head found a spot-whether it was comfortable or not!

We had her Left ear checked again because when we stopped the ear drops after 10 days, it had an odor and drainage again. We are to continue the ear drops in that ear for 2 more weeks. She has just finished her second round of de-wormer and will find out soon if that was effective. With the strange weather and holiday celebrations, we have learned that she doesn’t have storm anxiety and didn’t really react to the fireworks that went off on New Year’s Eve. With warmer weather, we started walking her and she is an excellent walking companion. Car rides, however are not her favorite thing. She is hesitant to get in but once she is she lays on the floor/seat without much activity. She does drool and did vomit once early in her stay. We will start taking her to places that are “fun” so she starts associating rides with good things.

This beautiful girl will soon be ready to meet her forever family. Will it be you? Contact your Placement Advisor if you are interested in Amy 16-272/Elsa.
