Please welcome Goober into the RAGOM family.  Goober is a sweet old boy.  His age is estimated to be between 12 and 14 years old – we’re calling him 13.  He is neutered.  Goober’s owner died and thanks to two Good Samaritans – one who looked in to feed and let him out each day, and another who took over his care and got him to see a Vet – he was lovingly placed into RAGOM’s care.

We took him into our RAGOM Vet soon after his arrival.  We received good news and bad news.  His senior bloodwork is great.  He has no parasites, infections, heartworm, or Lyme disease.  Unfortunately he does have bad scarring and arthritis in both rear legs and he also has a very aggressive nasal tumor.  We can control his pain and improve his mobility in his rear legs but the tumor is another story.  Goober’s Good Samaritan had taken him in to a Vet to have it removed but it is coming back with a vengeance.  Unfortunately his prognosis is not good.  If we can keep him happy and pain free for 4 to 6 months we will be doing well.

For this reason we are designating Goober as a “Hospice Dog”.  He is not available for adoption and we will do everything we can to give him a good quality life for as long as we can and then we will help him start his journey to the Rainbow Bridge.

Goober is a joy to be around.  He is one of the more affectionate dogs we have ever met.  He enjoys meeting new people and new dogs.  He gets along fine with our two resident cats.  Car rides are one of his favorite things.  We’ve been working on taking many short walks and we can already see that his rear leg muscle strength is improving.

He and our resident dog Harley are just like two peas in a pod.  Harley, who is 13.5 just loves having a buddy who does things at his speed.  The boys love their walks together and the treats they get (laced with their pain medication) when they return.  They have already had some fun adventures!

RAGOM is committed to all of our dogs.  We will give Goober the best Golden Life we can for as long as he is happy and free of pain.  Your contributions to RAGOM to help us care for our “old folks” are always appreciated.  Our plans as of now are to take Goober to Goldzilla on September 13.  He loves to ride and, health permitting, he should have a great time meeting everyone.  Please stop by and see us there.  We’ll likely be hanging around the Foster Tent.

Two days ago we said goodbye to our dear, sweet Goober boy. He was such a "go with the flow, it is what it is" kind of guy and managed to stay happy no matter what life dealt him. He made our lives richer for having known him just a short time, and our hearts are heavy without his presence in our home. Sleep soft, sweet Goobs...I'm glad you knew so much love your last months. Thank you for loving us back!

Momma said there'd be days like this ( sad FM took a little road trip to WI yesterday to shoot some wildlife and fall colors (only with her camera). She was very sad when she came home and saw that I'd been licking myself like crazy. I've heard that some of my RAGOM friends have had to wear the dreaded "cone of shame". Now I'm a member of the club. FM took me to the vet this morning where I was shaved, medicated and SHOT!! That's right, a needle right in my rear end, when I was least expecting it -O surprise From there it was on to Chuck & Don's to be fitted for "the cone". Sigh.... I hear if it stops raining we'll take a little jaunt to the DQ, if I'm feeling up to it. Oh, I think I'll be feeling fine by then *;) winking

This.............................................................will get you this Cry

Other than the past two days' excitement, my days are usually pretty mellow. I take lots of power naps, request that my meals consist of either hamburger or ground turkey with rice and veggies, bark when I need to go outside and get along famously with the RC (resident cat).

I had a couple of days where I wasn't feeling quite myself and FM & FD were pretty worried about me. I'm happy to report that I'm doing better, even with my nasty hot spot experience. Therefore....drum roll please....I've decided that I need a fun outing, one which involves hitting the road and meeting new dogs and people! You guessed it, I've talked FM & FD into attending the Meet & Greet tomorrow at Chuck & Don's in Edina ) happy   I feel you're never too old for a bit of culture, and rumor has it there'll be lots of dogs from Turkey there. I intend to sniff each and every one and welcome them to America! Hope to see you there!

Hi everyone! Goober here, with my vet update as promised. Firstly, here's a picture of me being my usual laid back self while I waited to see Dr. Jean last Wednesday. I've gotten to be somewhat of a regular at the office and everyone greets me by name. Makes a guy feel good to be remembered!

I wish I had better news to share, but after looking me over, Dr. Jean feels the laser therapy hasn't worked as well as she'd hoped. In addition to the two nasal tumors I now have a bump on top of my nose that wasn't there a month ago. FM and FD have a few choice words they associate with my "C", none of which I'm allowed to use here. It's a family show, after all (wink).

Since the laser doesn't seem to be doing the trick, Dr. Jean gave me an acupuncture treatment while I was there. Many thanks to her once again for the donation (I think she's kinda sweet on me)! Not sure if that and a few herbal remedies will help, but it's worth a shot! Only a couple of the needle pricks got my attention - for the most part I just laid there and enjoyed the attention.

So far, I'm still a happy guy and have a pretty good appetite...some days I don't feel like eating a lot but normally I make up for it the next day. FM & FD stumbled upon a couple of tasty treats to hide my pills in that I haven't been able to turn down yet - turkey sticks and liver sausage! As long as I can't see or smell those nasty pills, we're good! The cost of my meds is by no means cheap, so I'm adding a shameless plea here for sponsors to assist with my vet bills. I'd love you forever and you'd feel good all over!!

Looks like FD's team could use my help, so until next time...keep your paws crossed for me, and Skol Vikings!!

Hey everybody, Mr. Goober here!! Did you know, the postman always rings twice? That's exactly what happened here when MY package was delivered on Friday! I knew right away it was mine because MY name was on it!

FM and FD helped me open it up (that opposable thumb thing, you know) and OMGoodness, have you ever seen so much deliciousness all in one box? I know I haven't!

FD let me check out the whole box! I was mesmerized! So many cookies, so little time!

I quickly decided on a tasty little piggy, for fear FD would take the box away before I had a chance to choose something!

Needless to say, this has been an awesome weekend! Thank you so much, Secret Admirer (I wish I knew who you are!) for sending me my very own box of goodies! FM says they've come in especially handy the last couple mornings. She's of the opinion that I've become a bit picky about eating my breakfast, so she breaks up a cookie to add to my kibble. Sure helps the same ol' stuff go down the hatch *;) winking .

Stay tuned for a "how my vet appointment went" update at the end of this week. My last cold laser treatment is this Wednesday and Dr. Jean from Glacial Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Glenwood, MN (who has so kindly donated the cost of the treatments - thank you so much for your love and generosity!) will evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments. Please cross your paws for me for a good report! Until then, I think I hear a cookie calling my name - I'd better check it out D big grin .

Hey everyone, Goober here! First order of business...I'd like to thank, from the bottom of my Golden heart, Sharon & Todd Sens for their generous sponsorship of...ME!! You guys are the greatest x lovestruck . I already put some of that money to good use today when my antibiotic Rx was refilled :) Thank you again so much!!

Second order of business...Goldzilla! Never in all of my 13 or so years have I ever had such a pawesomely fantastic day. I got there early with my first foster Mom & Dad, strutting...ok, moseying...my stuff and wearing my magical RAGOM vest. It has pockets on each side and all day long, all my new human friends kept stuffing money in those pockets! By the end of the day I was carrying a pretty heavy load and was gosh darned proud to hear I'd collected over $100 in my magical vest! FM says I sure know how to work a crowd ) happy . Thank you to all who contributed, I so appreciate your love and contributions! It was a really fun time and I was plumb tuckered out from meeting so many new two and four legged friends.

After Goldzilla, I came home with my new and permanent foster Mom & Dad. It's pretty much the same here as my first foster home, except I'm not sharing King of the Castle duties. Well, at least not with another dog...there IS a cat here who thinks he's in charge, and I'm smart enough to know we'll keep the peace if I continue to let him "think" that *;) winking .

I'll write more another time...I'm still catching up on my sleep from the busy weekend. If you missed seeing me at Goldzilla, stop on out to Chuck and Don's in Shakopee this Saturday, the 19th, from 12-2pm. I'll be wearing my magical vest and waiting to meet you!!

Hi everybody, this is Goober.  This is my first attempt at an update so please bear with me.  My foster brother Harley says that these are a snap to do – we’ll see if he’s right.  Well, I’ve been here just a little short of a month and, at least as far as I’m concerned, things are really going well.  I get fed twice a day every day; they have air conditioning and comfy rugs and beds; and I get lots of attention, walks, and car rides.

Lately Foster Mom and Dad (FM and FD) have been talking to each other a lot about me having become a Hospice Dog.  I have to confess I’m not really sure what that means and Harley doesn’t seem to have a clue either.  All I know is that they’ve said that RAGOM will make sure that I’ll be well taken care of for the rest of my life – a guy can’t argue with that!

This past week has been a busy one.  My two legged grandkids came to visit again.  This means extra pets, combing and brushing, along with lots of noise and carrying on – all of which suits me just fine.  Last night they let me join them at their board game.  I subtly hinted that I’d like to play by stepping onto the game board.  They caught on pretty quickly and brought me my own pillow to lie on while we played.

I’ve been riding with FD nearly every day to the Vet’s office.  They are using what they call a low power laser on the funny thingy that’s growing on my nose.  It doesn’t hurt and Dr. Jean says it will help me to feel good.  Everybody knows me there now and I get lots of pets and treats.

FD showed me my new vest which came on Thursday.  He says that I will have a job to do next week at Goldzilla.  He says that this is a big event with hundreds of dogs and people.  My job will be to greet people and help raise money to help RAGOM pay for Vet care for other dogs.  He said that I’ll have to put up with lots of attention, many treats, and bunches of people wanting to pet me.  I’m going to make sure that I get my rest so I can do the best job I possibly can.  Harley says that he loves Goldzilla and is excited that he gets to go along again.

Finally, FM and FD told me this week that I’m going to be leaving their home after Goldzilla.  They said I’m going to live with Maria and Herb and their cat.  I’m going to miss FM, FD, and my two cat friends but I’m getting a little bit excited thinking about being an only dog again.  FD has been reading me their e-mails and they certainly seem to be looking forward to having me live with them.  If they are that enthused I think that I’ll continue to be a happy dog.  FD always says that I’ve never met a person or animal that I haven’t liked so I think I’m going to enjoy it there but I’ll probably miss FM and FD a little bit.

Harley was right – this update stuff isn’t too bad.  I hope that all of you will be able to come and see me at Goldzilla next Sunday (Sept.13).  I’m looking forward to meeting you.  If you can’t get there I’m betting that Maria and Herb will make sure that I update you about what went on.  Goodbye for now – your friend Goober.
