Gustavus (Buddy 05-058)

Profile

Buddy came into RAGOM after his previous owners surrendered him to a over-full Animal Shelter. Buddy has only been with us for a little over a day so we're still getting to know each other. What we do know about Buddy is as follows:

He is tall and very thin

He was born July 20, 2003

He is neutered

He doesn't have a problem with cats (we have 2 and the Shelter had to keep him in the cat room as there were no empty spaces in the dog side of the house!)

He likes to sleep (day or night) in our large wire crate.

He likes baths....and I suspect he likes to swim

He is housetrained

He knows "sit"

Buddy is trying to fit in with pack at our house (our dog named Buddy is trying to help), trying to gain some weight, trying to learn the dog rules and dog language we use here....life isn't always easy. Buddy will go the vet later this week. We'll try to get a few more ounces on him before that.

On Saturday April 22nd we said goodbye to our beloved Gustavus (Buddy 05-058).

On Easter weekend we took him for one last visit to his favorite place in the world, the cabin. From his first day to his last he loved being outside sniffing the air, swimming in the lake or taking a stroll over to see the neighbors who all showered him with affection. He had 12 great seasons of taking the trip each Friday to “HappyWorldLand” where he would do battle with his arch nemesis Chippy the chipmunk who lived in the wood pile.

Gus enriched our lives with his love and made us a family along with his siblings. He was at our side during all the good and bad of the last 12 years. He along with his brother Ozzie (Moe 09-436) walked us “down the aisle” for our wedding with our rings attached to their collars. He was just shy of 14 years old so the last couple of years had been a gift. He had surgery to repair the cruciate ligament in both back legs several years ago and arthritis started to take away his mobility. He could no longer do the stairs and needed help getting up from his bed or floor. However, he did manage to magically get up on his own and make his way into the kitchen whenever he heard the refrigerator door open or the rustling of making dinner. It all just became too much for him and we had to make the very difficult decision to say goodbye.

Our rescue puppy was loved beyond measure and our hearts are shattered at his passing. Such a huge part of our lives. He will be loved forever and never forgotten.

It was another amazing wonderful year with our big boy Gus (Buddy 05-058).  I know everyone thinks their “kids” are the best ones ever but in this case it is true.  In the last eight years Gus has given us unlimited love, entertainment and laughter.  He loves everyone and any stranger is a friend he hasn’t met yet.  This past fall he had his second cruciate ligament surgery and was a real trooper through the recovery process.  We learned a lot from his first one the year before so we were ready and made him a “couch” that he could easily get on without damaging anything.  He does seem to be getting a lot stiffer after an active weekend at the cabin but with a little help from Rimadyl he is ready to go exploring again. He can’t help overdoing it as our wonderful neighbors up there spoil him rotten and shower him with attention.  The minute he knows they are outside he runs through the fields to say hello.  He will climb snow banks or climb over fallen trees to say hello and welcome them for the weekend.  He loves to cuddle and be touched.  Sometimes all he needs is his head on your lap or your hand resting on his back.  He is a great big brother to Ozzie (Moe 09-436) and together they have completed our family.  Can’t imagine our lives without our wonderful Gus.

Thanks RAGOM for another great year.

Well it has been 7 really wonderful years since Gus (Buddy 05-058) joined our family. We could say that he is starting to slow down (he turns 9 in July) but he has honestly always been a bit of a lazy dog. His favorite spot has always been the couch. Even as a puppy he would go right to the couch after any activity. Walking, eating, playing with his brother, it doesn’t matter. When he is done he goes to the couch. He even plays tug of war from the couch with his little brother Ozzie (Moe 09-436).

Last year he was beside himself after surgery to repair the cruciate ligament on his rear right leg. He was banned from climbing on the couch for those weeks of recovery and he was the saddest dog ever. Even now that he is back 100% he still only gets up to eat, when he hears the car keys, thinks there might be food someplace, or when he hears the leash come out of the closet. Even at the cabin he only gets up for walks, a swim in the lake or when he sees you get out the Furminator. He loves sitting on the deck and being groomed. You could brush him for hours. He also gets up for people. He loves everyone. He is thrilled any time someone comes to visit. Anyone who meets him just falls in love with him. Even though he loves other dogs he would still rather meet a new person than a new dog. But probably our favorite thing is watching how our little guy Ozzie just looks up to him like a real older brother. He is just nuts about him and always wants to be doing what he is doing.

Actually we all adore Gus. He is a great great dog. Thank you RAGOM!

Dear RAGOM,

It has been 5 very short years since the former Buddy 05-058 came charging into our lives. First of all his name was changed to Gustavus (Gus for short) and Gustavus Naughtius when he isn’t on his best behavior.

I don’t think he looked back for a second. I know we didn’t. Okay, he probably missed his foster Mom Melissa for awhile. She did a great job getting him ready for us. Thanks again Melissa for giving us the final okay.

Here are a couple of pictures of Gus (on the right) with his big brother Zeus last Christmas at the cabin in Wisconsin.

For Gus it is not just a cabin. He thinks of it as “HappyWorldLand”. He just loves it there. There are a bunch of neighbor cabin fur-buddies to play with every weekend and tons of visitors stopping by just to say hello to him (at least that is what he thinks).

We can’t even begin to describe how much he has improved and changed our lives. He is what you would call a “character”. If he doesn’t like something he wrinkles up his nose and talks back. God forbid if we give too much attention to his brother or 18 year old feline sister. He forces all 95 lbs of himself up on your lap to grab all of the attention. Because he has been known to help himself to the unattended food on plates he was nicknamed The Sandwich Bandit.

He has turned the most fervent of non-dog lovers to best friends. People have said, “I don’t really like dogs but I really like Gus.” He is funny, smart, friendly and at times a bit of a prima donna but we wouldn’t change a thing. We knew the minute we saw that face he was the one for our family.

Thank you RAGOM for letting us adopt this wonderful dog and completing our family.
