I would like to introduce General Jackson, but just Jackson will do! He is a loving, playful, sweet Golden Retriever who acts nothing like his age. He is a very young 9, turning 10 at the end of May. Jackson came to RAGOM because his family wasn't able to provide any time for him, but it is clear they gave him lots of attention and love. In his home he participated in field training for 3 years, so he has the extra bit of training that is so great for Goldens. Jackson came to us yesterday and has loved up everyone in the house, especially the kids, ages 8, 11 and 13.

Our resident dog gave him a hard time, but he didn't seem bothered by it all. His owners also said he is good with cats. Today he had a playdate with the neighbor dog in our yard and resident dog Sid joined in for a bit as well. His energy is great, much better than our 5 year-old!

I will update later after a visit to the vet next week although his recent records show his health is pretty good. He does have a history of seizures, but manages that with medication two times a day. With that, he hasn't had any issues. He is also up to date on all vaccinations.

Even though we haven't spent much time with him yet, I can already tell what a wonderful addition he will make to a special family, nothing but love.

Updates

JACKSON is the newest member of my family. He is a 12-year-old purebred Golden Retriever.

JACKSON is a calming influence in my home.

He is friendly to the other dogs and cat. He was raised with children.

JACKSON has been home uncrated when I am gone from home. Then, he likes his Kong with playing music or baseball on the radio.

JACKSON likes daily walks and water.

JACKSON was originally surrendered to RAGOM as his family couldn't devote as much time to him.

Recently, he was surrendered due to family finances.

JACKSON will eat items (socks, etc), so it is easy to place those type items in a closed hamper.

JACKSON requires seizure medication 2 times per day.

JACKSON is an easy fella to love.

Jackson has had a full day of R and R here at the foster home. He is doing well. He takes his medication in soft food with no problem. He is drinking water and as the day went on he ate a few small meals. He looks and seems the most unhappy when I strap on the cone, but the minute it comes off he is quick to lick his surgical site. So, we try to give him breaks when he eats, drinks, goes outside and then offer some snuggle time and little bit of loving until he can't help himself and tries to lick again. On the cone goes. The hard plastic cone he came home with seemed to be just a bit short and I think he could actually lick his stitches. I tried the comfy cone that is a bit softer, but darker for him. He seemed to do better so that is what we will be using for the rest of the time needed. He will need to continue his medication and the unlucky cone for another week.

On a much lighter and happier note Jackson will have the opportunity to meet a family this weekend that was supposed to meet him last weekend before we knew the surgery needed to happen. We are all looking forward to this meeting and I have no doubt Jackson will have plenty of love and tail wagging to go around! He is a wonderful guy.

Jackson took a trip to the vet yesterday. I should add that he LOVES the car and jumped right in and settled on the floor behind me without a peep the whole way. We had a little bump in the road with the sweet boy this week. He decided to eat a few small non edible things around our house - probably a little army guy, maybe a leg of a soft toy and most likely a rubber toy, not all at the same time. This was in the first few days at our house. So we waited for the throwing up which began Monday night. His energy was still good and appetite good, so we hoped he would be able to get rid of whatever he ingested one way or another. He had a rough go Monday night and Tuesday, but Wednesday he was fine. I also put him on a rice diet Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday morning I started him on his regular food and it came back up shortly after.

He saw the vet yesterday. Some tests were done and showed that there do not seem to be any obstructions or problems with metabolism, renal, liver or pancreatitis function. So the vet gave him some anti-nausea medication that he will take for 4 days. He is on a bland diet at least for today. If he continues to throw-up we will return to the vet, but as of this afternoon all is well. We will keep our paws crossed that whatever he ate has worked itself out and he can be feeling fine again soon.

Jackson is heading to the Vet on Thursday, but we thought you might like a little more information on him as he has begun to settle into our home. He continues to be super sweet and shows us what a young 9 year-old has to offer a family during his golden years.

  • He loves his chew ring and that is best as he easily chews up soft toys and tries to consume them
  • The kids need to keep their toys picked up or Jackson thinks he can eat them
  • He walks beautifully with a harness and keeps good energy throughout
  • We crate him while we are gone to keep him safe
  • He sleeps on the floor next to us and comes up for occasional head pets(just to check-in)
  • He doesn't bark when people come to the door or when he sees other dogs on walks (unlike our resident dog)
  • He does bark when he wants to come inside and sounds a bit like a seal
  • He takes his daily medicine to control seizures very willingly 2x daily
  • He gets along with everybody who comes to our home
  • He isn't bothered by our resident dog who is bossy with him
  • He has been trained to stay off furniture
  • He does not jump up on people
  • He loves to play outside tossing his toys around wildly
  • He takes treats nicely
  • He sits and stays on command (most of the time)
  • He doesn't always come in when called, that can be a little tricky when he is having so much fun!
  • He could be a single dog in a house or share with others including cats
  • He is super sweet and gentle

We will send out the official word from the vet at the end of the week.
