Jedediah 14-029

Profile

In addition to LOVE this dog has the following requirements:
Entered Foster Care Fence Kid Friendly Another Dog Cat Friendly
2/16/2014   Required Yes   Keegan 14-030 Yes
This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Please welcome Jedediah to RAGOM! Jedediah is a very active 9 year-old, 100 pound, pure-bred, male golden retriever. He was surrendered to RAGOM with his fur brother, Keegan (14-030). The two are very close and need to be adopted together. Who wouldn't want two 100 pound lap dogs?

Jedediah is the leader of the two. He is a very confident dog. In his past life he was an outdoor dog - kept in a kennel or in a wood-heated garage when it was really cold. Jedediah is now living the golden life inside a house. We have the brothers contained to just a couple rooms for now, but Jedediah appears to be fully house trained. He will sit for food and treats. We also have him sit to get petted because he can be a little too exuberant at times. :-) Because of his exuberance, I'd recommend kids over age 5, but that can depend on how dog-savvy the kids are. He has come a long way towards learning manners in just a few days.

When you see that Jedediah is 9 years old you are probably thinking "senior citizen", right? If you are, you're wrong. A 2-mile, hour long walk, is only part of the exercise we've been giving the boys this week. Jedediah is only a few pounds overweight and is very muscular. Besides lots of walks, he loves to wrestle with his brother, Keegan. Since he was used to being outside, he loves, loves, loves to explore the yard.

Jedediah is up to date on his shots and, other than a slightly infected ear, he is quite healthy. He is scheduled to be neutered on February 27th  and will be available for adoption after that.

There are some humans with a really big heart that know exactly what rescue is all about. It's about taking in dogs that aren't young or perfect. It's about finding the story of a dog (or dogs) that speaks to your heart and taking them in, regardless of their age or any perceived imperfections.

I am SO pleased to inform you that Jedediah and Keegan have found such a person. They left their foster home for their forever home in Wisconsin last Saturday and have already settled in. I'm sure they know that they are now home for good. Here's to a long, happy life for you Jed!

When we were at Pet-a-Palooza, we visited the U of M vet techs that were doing body composition analysis. An underweight dog would score 1, 2, or 3; and overweight dog would score 7, 8 or 9; with 4, 5, and 6 being healthy weight scores. I'm happy to report that Jedediah received a perfect 5!

Considering adopting Jed? Here's what you need to know.

  • He's healthy! 90 pounds of muscle. We walk between 2 and 4 miles each morning. He walks pretty well with his martingale collar but in high traffic areas we usually use his gentle leader head collar just to avoid any unforeseen issues.
  • He does swim but prefers to be on land sniffing out critters.
  • He loves all humans, big and small. He loves to sit on your feet and lean on your legs. He follows foster mom from room to room.
  • He is great with other dogs - except unaltered males (somewhat common). He lived with a 12 year-old dog and did great. He is currently living with a 4 month-old puppy and he is SO good with him!
  • He knows sit, will come when called and will usually lay down when told to.
  • He's not the flight risk he used to be. Some friends let him sneak out the gate and he started running around the neighbor's yard but came back when foster mom and foster dad called for him. Good boy!
  • The only time Jed shows his age is after about 8 p.m. He'll gladly hunker down until 8 a.m.
  • He doesn't counter surf.
  • He's a smart dog and could learn more tricks with someone willing to put some time into training him.

He is so close to perfect - won't you give him a chance to steal your heart?

Foster Mom and Foster Dad took a short trip and a wonderful foster family took both boys in for 5 days. The new household had 2 girl dogs and 2 cats. I am happy to report that Jedediah sniffed at cats, but that was as far as it went. So, he's cat tested and approved. The wonderful temporary fosters also said that both boys were perfect gentlemen. Yay!

So, here's a synopsis of Jed:

  • Jed is healthy and at his ideal weight.
  • Jed loves people of all sizes. He will sit on your feet and lean into your legs.
  • Jed gets along with cats.
  • Jed gets along with dogs - except unneutered males. He's had a couple minor snarling incidents with two different dogs and he barks at a dog in the neighborhood, who I just found out is not neutered.
  • Jed walks easily using a Gentle Leader. Quite often he walks fine with a regular collar, but I like having the Gentle Leader handy, just in case.
  • Jed is not afraid of storms or fireworks. Or the vacuum or anything else.
  • Jed knows how to swim, but is more interested in sniffing for chipmunks on land.
  • Jed likes to dig a shallow hole to lay in, but he learned really fast the places that we consider appropriate spots for digging. The sandbox is his favorite place but we do have a couple other places under evergreen trees that we allow digging too.
  • Jed rarely barks. Only at the unneutered male that he hasn't met and at the horses we encountered on our walk one day.
  • Jed likes tugs and chew toys. He'd rather chew a stick into pieces, than chase a ball.
  • Jed is pretty sure that people food would taste good but, since we've never given him any, he doesn't beg for it.
  • Jed usually sleeps in the living room at night - either on the cool tile by the door or on Foster Mom's side of the love seat.

You really need to meet Jedediah to see just how wonderful he is! There's no obligation to meet him!

Hello fans!

Look what Foster Mom got for us? I'm including a "before" photo but the parts are scattered too far and wide for an "after" photo. :-)

Love,

Jed

Jedediah (and Keegan 14-030) will be at Chuck and Don's in Edina on Saturday, April 12th from 3:00 - 5:00. You should really come and meet these sweet boys! They are such lovable pups full of devotion.

Jed did a quick trip to the vet today because he had an ear infection that wasn't getting better. Now he has a new medication and should be good in just 5 days. The vet we saw was different from who he had seen in the past and when I mentioned that Jed was 9 years old, the vet said "He's 9? I never would have guessed that! He looks great!" So, we were told that he is 9, but there really isn't any evidence to support it. :-) Jed weighed in at 90.6 pounds so I think we're doing well on guessing how much to feed him. The vet tech also commented how great he looks now.

Jed is the dog that you will find directly behind you. He wants to be close to his people. Jed has come a long way in learning self-control. He is getting much better at waiting to get out of the car and will stay inside while you exit the house. It's all about consistency. I know he'll be able to learn much more in time.

Do you ever worry about your precious pups while you are at work? Perhaps worry that they might be lonely or bored? Well, if you had 2 dogs that love each other, you wouldn't have to worry about them being lonely! Jedediah and Keegan spend a lot of time playing together and laying near or on each other. Even while on walks, they occasionally have to bump or kiss each other.

It's amazing the difference that consistent exercise and human companionship has had on Jedediah. He was pretty hyper when he first got here. Now he is showing his sweet, loving side. Jed is a typical Velcro Golden who wants to be near his people. He is great at warming your feet and legs! The last 2 days, we have walked him on a flat collar instead of the Gentle Leader and he was perfect, except I couldn't keep his attention quite long enough twice for men to pass us by. I was able to keep his attention long enough twice for female joggers to go by. He just wants to go get petted so much! If it ever warms up enough so we can walk bare-handed, we can use treats to get his attention.

Jedediah continues to amaze us with his stamina and athleticism. He's the one that will walk on a wall of snow, instead of on the path. We have walked him over 3 miles (at 3+ mph) and I'm quite certain he'd keep going if we kept going. Of course, when we get home, he's fine taking a nap.

You really need to meet these 2 boys and see just how sweet and loving they are. The photos capture their beauty, but can't quite capture their loving natures.

Hi, it's Jed! Foster Mom said I should write my own update this time. This place I'm staying is really great! They feed me twice a day, every day! We get to go for walks a lot too. This week has been a little slow in that area, though. Foster Mom said something about we need to rest to heal from our surgery. I don't want to rest! I was really enjoying the 3+ mile walks each day.

My super power is leaping Keegan in a single bound! I'm very athletic and would love to have someone teach me some agility moves. Foster Mom says I'm pretty easy to train because all the reward I need is human attention and affection.

Evidently, I get to go to something called a "store" on Sunday. Foster Mom thinks we should practice before then, but we're on restricted activity because of that operation. Whatever a store is, I'm in! I really like going places and I go with the flow. I hope there are lots of people there to pet me. Do you want to join me at the store too? Foster Mom says it's the Chuck and Don's in Shakopee and we should be there about 12:30. I don't know how to tell time, so I'll just jump in the car whenever she says I can.
