Please join me in welcoming Jillian to her new life as a RAGOM dog.  Jillian is a petite beauty - a lovely lap-sized golden mix who is small enough to pick up and cuddle or perch on your lap yet big enough to enjoy a run in the back yard with the big dogs.  Honest, we haven't found a single thing about Miss Jillian that isn't just plain wonderful.

It's obvious that Jillian was a well-loved family member.  The living circumstances in her original home changed and her owner lovingly surrendered her to RAGOM but not before she went out and had her groomed and lavished her with new toys and treats.  It must have been a sad farewell, you can tell from Jillian's manners that she was treated well and enjoyed a very good life.  Our goal is to make sure all of  that continues!

Jillian absolutely enjoys playing with our dogs - young and old.  She runs and romps in the backyard, chasing and being chased.  She has fallen head-over-heels for my husband and follows him room to room, whimpering if he goes somewhere where she can't join him.  I have to confess that we let her up on the furniture and she loves to crawl up in our laps and settle in.  She also quickly let us know that she would like to sleep up on the bed with the other young dog so she's definitely made her self right at home.

Jillian has good household manners, she has figured out the routine quickly and watched the rest of the dogs to learn how things should be done.  Her behavior is wonderful, she doesn't protect her toys or food, sits and takes her treats so gently you can hardly believe it.  As we said, she's a small girl, around 41 pounds or so, about 18 months old, spayed, up-to-date on her shots and vaccinations and very very loveable.  She has one-up, one-down ears which we find to be totally captivating.  Her muzzle is dark, her fur is mid-to-dark golden and she has feathering on her rear legs and tail, all sized for the diminutive girl that she is.  Most charming of all, she has a tongue that looks like she's been licking an inkwell.  Some dogs have a spot, Jillian has a *lot* of black spots.  It all adds up to a nice, sweet girl.  She's timid at first and then once she meets you and gets comfortable she warms right up and is quite confident. The first day she was with us, she was definitely on alert, taking it all in.  But now she's comfortable and has figured out all the rules.  While Jillian did not live with a fenced yard, she was well-trained and does her business on a leash.  She is a young, playful dog and at this time we do not think she would be a good candidate to be outside without being on a leash or in a fenced area; she is curious, energetic, likes to run for some exercise and occasionally gets frightened by mysterious sounds on the other side of the fence and we don't blame her.

Jillian has been to the vet for her wellness exam and has been microchipped.  She gets along well with dogs and lived with cats in her previous home.  She has not been exposed to children.

Miss Jillian made a long trip from Iowa to northern MN to meet some very special people.  She spent a couple of days with a temporary foster while she checked out Minnesota and a potential home.  Evidently she found everything to her liking, because she has chosen to make this new family her forever home.  As you can see from the picture everyone seems very happy about it.  She will have two adults and a human brother and sister to spoil her, and a canine sister to play with.

Thanks so much to her fosters in Iowa who helped Miss Jillian to come out of her shell and prepared her for a great future.  Welcome home Jillian!

Jillian had a great week -- the weather was perfect so she had plenty of opportunities to play hard and nap hard in the sunshine too, the perfect life for a young dog, I think.  She still seems to *really* enjoy playing bitey-face with our young dog and I've tried to capture it in a photo but they move very fast!  The rules of the game can change suddenly so that the one doing the chasing can suddenly become the one being chased and apparently it really doesn't matter too much to them.  Lots of fun and it's great to see how happy Jillian is.
Now that we've had a bit more time with her, here are a few things we've learned:1.  Jilly is a dainty eater, very slow and polite.  Right now we're feeding her separately from our other dogs so she can enjoy a leisurely meal but she has shown absolutely no possessiveness or guarding of her food or toys.2.  Speaking of toys -- just this week we found her chewing on one of the myriad of toys in the dogs' toy basket.  She had selected an enormous Nylabone and was contently chewing away in the sun room.  Such a good girl!3.  We missed Jillian's cues about needing to go outside several times this week; we don't think it's her fault at all.  We know that she isn't thrilled to go outside when our other dogs are out having a bark-fest and we should have been more watchful and encouraged her more strongly.  Her routine is very predictable -- we'll all do better this week.4.  We were late home one evening, maybe two hours later than typical and someone (we think it was Jillian) was a bit frustrated and chewed on Jillian's dog bed.  No one confessed but we have our suspicions....5.  Jillian crates easily and she was crated in her original home.  She does good at free roam too, although the longest we've been away from home at this point has been 3-4 hours.
When Jillian first arrived, she was very timid and reacted with a bit of a panic to unexpected sounds and movements.  While that has diminished significantly, she is still uncertain in many situations and when that happens she runs to a familiar safe spot -- the bedroom or sometimes she wants to be with her dog buddy.  As we've watched her, we think she will be at her very best if she can be around another playful, confident dog.
We're working hard to get Jillian out and about so she can build her confidence.  Yesterday we took her to our favorite pet store and she showed that she can be quite the shopper although she was not interested in taking any treats from the very nice woman at the cash register.  This week, we'll take her on a few more outings as well -- one thing for sure, she loves to go for a ride in the car!  If we can find an obedience class for her, we'll see how that goes too -- we think she'll shine as she's a very bright little girl.  She already knows several good behaviors and this will give her a chance to practice and meet more people and dogs.  All good!
