Profile

Let me introduce you to beautiful and gentle Joey. Joey came to RAGOM by the way of a commercial breeding facility. He is learning what it is like to live in a home with all of its noises and distractions. For the most part he is doing well, but even closing a drawer hard can startle him. He comes with some fears but is trying very hard to be brave and learn how to live as a beloved family member instead of a breeding dog.

To understand why RAGOM will adhere to our requirements for Joey regarding children and another dog, please read about Retired Breeding Dogs.

Joey was at the veterinarian yesterday and is having a couple of health issues that need to be addressed.

Once those have been clarified we will update his webpage.

These are the things that Joey will need in his new home:

  1. Joey loves to play with dogs and will need another playful dog in the home
  2. Someone who will be home more then gone as he does not like to be crated
  3. A committed family member who will walk Joey each day to expose him to new sights and sounds
  4. Understanding and patience to help him overcome his fears

Joey has so much love to give and the only thing that keeps him from retrieving his ball is if he thinks he can get some loving instead.

Because Joey had been starved for human attention he can be a little needy and will need a home with plenty of love to give and hands to give it.

Over time I believe taking Joey to obedience would benefit both him and the family bond.

If you think you can provide what Joey needs in his forever home, please review our adoption process, and then submit an Inquiry for Application.

Joey is doing well in his foster home learning about all the "scary" things like the dishwasher, hairdryer, and loud noises. Here is an example to give you an idea of how timid these commercial breeders can be.

I had some frozen chicken breasts in a bag that had frozen together and banged it on the floor, which made Joey take off running to the back bedroom. I let him come out on his own time, and when he came back out I started to bang the bag again on the floor lightly as he watched from about 15 feet away.

He continued to watch me as I kept it up until he was no longer afraid and came up to the bag and gave it a sniff. These are all the little things that these dogs are not used to. They need help with desensitizing to everyday sounds of the house.

Quick actions can cause them to be anxious. Joey did not like it when I raised my arms above my head to put on my jacket, but he has learned that is nothing to fear. It all takes time and patience.

Keep Joey in your thoughts next week as he goes in for his neuter and dental work.

Please think about sponsoring Joey or one of the many deserving RAGOM dogs.

Welcome to RAGOM my beautiful Joey. Joey is such a loving and sweet boy. He loves to be beside you and put his head in your lap and watch TV and howl with the sirens. Joey has only been here a short while but he is fitting in so well with his confident foster fur-brother, River.

This is Joey's safe spot.

Joey went to the veterinarian and got a clean bill of health, except for a broken canine that will need to be removed when he is neutered next month.

Joey has many typical fears that a dog has when coming from a large breeding facility, but he is being very brave. I am confident that with time and patience he will be a wonderful companion.

Joey is a retriever through and through as he loves to retrieve his ball!
