Keegan 14-030

Profile

In addition to LOVE this dog has the following requirements:
Entered Foster Care Fence Kid Friendly Another Dog Cat Friendly
2/16/2014   Required Yes (all ages)  Jedediah 14-029 Yes
This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Please welcome Keegan to RAGOM! Keegan is a very active 8-year-old, 105-pound, purebred, male Golden Retriever. He was surrendered to RAGOM with his fur brother, Jedediah (14-029) .

Keegan is the follower; he needs his brother around to show him the way, although he isn't really overly shy on his own. I think Keegan has just gotten used to Jedediah leading him: into the car, into the house, etc. In Keegan's past life, he was an outdoor dog - kept in a kennel or in a wood-heated garage when it was really cold. Keegan is now living the Golden Life inside a house. Keegan appears to be house-trained, but did mark once in the living room (the resident dog's space). Keegan will sit (reluctantly) for food and treats. He did lay down on command 3 times today, but we'll work more on consistency.

Keegan, at 8 years old, is showing no signs of being a "senior citizen." He is a little overweight and probably wouldn't mind being someone's couch potato, but he loves going on walks and can go the same 2 miles as his brother, although a bit slower. Since he was used to being outside, he loves being outside. One of his favorite pastimes is making snow angels.

Keegan is now up to date on his shots and, other than ear infections and a few extra pounds on his waist, he is quite healthy. He is scheduled to be neutered on February 27th  and will be available for adoption after that.

There are some humans with a really big heart that know exactly what rescue is all about. It's about taking in dogs that aren't young or perfect. It's about finding the story of a dog (or dogs) that speaks to your heart and taking them in, regardless of their age or any perceived imperfections.

I am SO pleased to inform you that Jedediah and Keegan have found such a person. They left their foster home for their forever home in Wisconsin last Saturday and have already settled in. I'm sure they know that they are now home for good. Have a long, happy life, Keegs!

When we were at Pet-a-Palooza, we visited the U of M vet techs that were doing body composition analysis. An underweight dog would score 1, 2, or 3; and overweight dog would score 7, 8, or 9; with 4, 5, and 6 being healthy weight scores. I'm happy to report that Keegan received a perfect 5!

Considering adopting Keegan? Here's what you need to know.

  • He's healthy! 90 pounds is a good weight for his height. We walk between 2 and 4 miles each morning. He walks pretty well with his martingale collar. We are trying to get him used to a Gentle Leader, but he's pretty sensitive and hasn't adjusted yet.
  • He loves to swim after tennis balls. He chases tennis balls on land. He sleeps with them too.
  • He loves humans, but he thinks babies are a little noisy. Any child old enough to throw a ball is his best friend.
  • He is great with other dogs. He lived with a 12-year-old dog and did great. He is currently living with a 4-month-old puppy and he is SO good with him!
  • He knows sit and will come when called.
  • He's not the flight risk he used to be. Some friends let him sneak out the gate and he started running around the neighbor's yard, but came back when foster mom and foster dad called for him. Good boy!
  • He doesn't counter surf.
  • He still has some human trust issues, but is getting better. He willingly laid with his paws and head in foster mom's lap the other night and even let her handle his paws.

He is so close to perfect - won't you give him a chance to steal your heart?

Foster Mom and Foster Dad took a short trip and a wonderful foster family took both boys in for 5 days. The new household had 2 girl dogs and 2 cats. I am happy to report that Keegan ignored the cats. So, he's cat tested and approved. The wonderful temporary fosters also said that both boys were perfect gentlemen. Yay!

So, here's a synopsis of Keegan:

  • Keegan is healthy and at his ideal weight.
  • Keegan loves people, but isn't quite sure about crying babies.
  • Keegan ignores cats.
  • Keegan gets along with ALL dogs.
  • Keegan walks pretty well with a regular collar. Now that he has lost weight and built muscle, he is starting to pull, so we are starting to use the Gentle Leader, but he's not used to it yet.
  • Keegan is not afraid of storms or fireworks. Or the vacuum. He doesn't like going outside by himself after dark. He is still a little startled by quick movements.
  • Keegan loves to swim, and will fetch a ball in the lake for as long as we let him.
  • Keegan may dig a shallow hole to lay in, but he learned really fast the places that we consider appropriate spots for digging.
  • Keegan will bark when he wants to come in and will bark at us other times - we think it's when he wants to play. He also has a cute "talking" voice. We think he's either complaining about how tough his life is, or just telling us how much he loves us. It's really cute. :-)
  • Keegan loves, loves, loves tennis balls. He doesn't always want to give it to you, but he wants you to throw it for him to fetch.
  • Keegan doesn't know that eating people food is even an option and usually when we are eating a meal, he's in a different room or off doing his own thing.
  • Keegan used to sleep on the couch in the living room so he was near his brother, but he has gotten more confident and now usually sleeps on the floor next to Foster Dad's side of the bed.

You really need to meet Keegan to see just how cute he is! There's no obligation to meet him!

Keegan can swim!

Hello, people!

Does your house have stuffed animals? If so, can I come and visit? Foster Mom and Foster Dad occasionally let me play with stuffed animals, but in just a few days, they throw them away - so I'm looking for a new house that has LOTS of stuffed animals to play with.

Thanks!

Keegan

Keegan (and Jedediah 14-029) will be at Chuck and Don's in Edina on Saturday, April 12th, from 3:00 - 5:00. You should really come and meet these sweet boys! They are such lovable pups full of devotion.

Keegan got weighed today. He is down to 89 pounds. I think it might be time to increase his food intake. Since the temps have been above 50 degrees (finally), we have done some pretty long walks recently (3+ miles), so Keegan is burning lots of calories and has added muscle. He looks great! Keegan enjoys picking up a stick or a ball while on our walks. Sometimes, he carries them all the way to the car. His favorite part of the walk is when he gets to munch on and roll in snow banks. He'll be sad to see the snow melt away.

Taking his stick for a walk

When we are indoors, Keegan still loves tennis balls and the couch. We have a box for the dog toys. We pick them all up when we vacuum and a couple of days later, they are all scattered about again. :-) He's such a happy dog - unless you raise your voice or make a quick movement. I don't know how long it will take him to stop cowering from fear. It still just breaks my heart every time I see him cower. He deserves love without fear for the rest of his life.

Do you ever worry about your precious pups while you are at work? Perhaps worry that they might be lonely or bored? Well, if you had 2 dogs that love each other, you wouldn't have to worry about them being lonely! Keegan and Jedediah spend a lot of time playing together and laying near or on each other. Even while on walks, they occasionally have to bump or kiss each other.

Keegan is fully house trained. No incidents since the first week or so. The best thing about having dogs that haven't lived in a house? They've never been fed people food. When we eat dinner, Keegan is either laying on his bed or in the living room, sometimes playing with a ball, sometimes resting. No begging going on unless you are near the "woofie" jars. Keegan has lost some weight - we will find out how much later this week when we go in for booster shots. He's really close to his ideal weight and is putting on muscle from our daily walks.

Keegan is sweet, gentle, and loving. He just may give you a kiss on your hand. Keegan gets a little nervous around new things, but things don't seem to stress him out too much. We had been walking on a path next to a train track today and I was glad the train went by when we were on the bridge going over the train tracks. I'm sure seeing a train was a first for him.

You really need to meet these 2 boys and see just how sweet and loving they are. The photos capture their beauty, but can't quite capture their loving natures.

Hi, it's Keegan. Foster Mom says I have to write my own update. Let's see... So far, I have learned that I shouldn't pee in the house. I haven't done that in over a week. I've never lived in a house, so I'm just learning the rules here. I've learned that couches are soft and cushy, and a really nice place to lay when you want to get petted or play with toys or whatever. I was nervous here the first week and didn't always eat but I'm eating fine now.

My super power is de-stuffing a stuffed animal in less than 2 minutes! First the nose goes, then some stuffing, then the eyes and more stuffing, then the ears and limbs. One bear is very thin right now. The second bear I've been taking it easy on.

Foster Mom says Jed and I get to go to a store called Chuck and Don's in Shakopee on Sunday afternoon. I've never been to a store, but Foster Mom promised that there would be people there to pet me, so I'm sure I'll have fun. I'll be the handsome, dark red dog. My face is slightly white and I have a cute gray spot on my tongue. Want to come and see me? My fur is really soft, so I'm sure you'll want to pet me.
