Hey RAGOM fans let me introduce a new stunning girl named Khloe. Miss Khloe came into RAGOM care this past weekend and a big Thank You to Dale and Janet F. for driving almost the entire transport!

Here are the details about Khloe:

She is a purebred Golden Retriever (she came with her AKC papers).
She is 2.5 years old (born 6/15/2009).
She weighs 60 pounds.
Did I mention how gorgeous this girl is?

Now the things we are working on. Ms. Khloe went to the vet to get her shots up to date. She has not been to a vet in the last 2 years. At first check things looked good. She only had a minor yeast infection in her left ear. Today we got the dreaded phone call that her heartworm test came back positive. The next step is to have another blood panel drawn and x-rays to determine the extent (stage) of the heartworm disease. Then the big hurdle will be to find the medicine to treat the heartworm disease. You see the drug manufacturer has stopped production of the drug (Immiticide). Khloe is the second foster dog of mine that has had heartworm disease. The monthly heartworm preventative is very inexpensive when compared to the cost of the treatment she will undergo. You could buy 2 to 3 years worth of the monthly preventative compared to the cost of one dose of the medicine that will be needed to kill the heartworms. Depending on the severity of the heartworm disease she could need 2 or more treatments of the drug (Immiticide). The treatment to is very hard on the dogs as this is a very strong medication and they will need to be very inactive will undergoing the treatments.

Khloe was living with an elderly man in southern Minnesota. He had some health issues and was no longer able to keep Khloe. Khloe then went to live with one of the nurses that was caring for her dad. They realized Khloe needed more care than they could provide. Thank You H. family for getting Khloe into RAGOM's care!

Khloe is very shy and timid of new things. I would guess that she did not get a lot of interaction with people outside of her dad. She also needs to learn how to interact better with other dogs. Inside the house she is better than she is outside. Outside she really likes to charge the other dogs. She did not learn at a young age how to play gently with other dogs. These are behaviors that we are already working on and seeing improvements in just three or four days.

Khloe will be unavailable for adoption until her heartworm condition is treated and she will also need to be spayed. But don't let that stop you from meeting this adorable girl. We plan to attend this Sunday's (12/18) event at the Apple Valley location from 12 to 1:30 PM.

XOXO

May 6, 2012

Our dear Khloe girl was helped across the Rainbow Bridge in dignity and peace on Sunday afternoon. We were so blessed to have had this girl for nearly 7 full weeks after the dreaded diagnosis of Lymphoma. Khloe had just been adopted by K and B on March 10 and on March 19 they brought her into their vet because they had a suspicion that something was just not right. When they called me with the pathology reports the next day I remember fearing the worst after hearing terms such as “high grade cells”, “both lymph nodes”, an “advanced form” and “maybe 30 days”. So we came to the decision to bring her back to her FD and her foster furr sisters and brother. This decision was by no means easy for her new Mom and Dad to make but it was their selfless desire to do what was best for our Khloe girl.

For nearly seven weeks our Khloe girl amazed us and blessed us with her playful antics and unending love. She loved to help her sisters (Indy and Lauren) with their daily critter patrol. No squirrel or bunny was going to invade their backyard as long as this trio was on duty. Each morning I had to watch my step when I came out of the shower as Khloe would have several of her toys close at hand/paw. Khloe was quite a skilled surgeon with her toys. She performed a number of squeak-ectomies, a tail-echtomy on her prized duckie, and hip replacement surgery on her sock monkey and maybe a thorough de-stuffing of a toy or two. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her on the other side of the bridge in a white lab coat with Dr. Khloe monogrammed on it.

Khloe absolutely loved to go for our walks. She walked so well that I never needed to use a Gentle Leader. If only my crazy girls would be so kind. Everyone we met on our walks were so amazed by Khloe. How could you not be with her bright eyes, gorgeous furr coat with such interesting highlights, and that puppy fuzz on the top of her head.

Khloe’s journey in becoming a RAGOM dog started late last November. Her owner (elderly gentleman) became hospitalized and was told he would not be able to return home. His family didn’t want Khloe so a nurse of her dad’s took Khloe in. The H. family really adored Khloe but they knew she needed more than they could give. They contacted RAGOM to make sure Khloe found the right home. Khloe was picked up by Dale and Janet F. near Rochester and transported nearly the entire way to FD. My first impression was she was a shy, petite, and oh so pretty girl. She was vetted the next day and she tested positive for heartworms. Khloe underwent three rounds of Immiticide treatment for heartworm, the first dose on Dec. 26 and the second and third doses 30 days later in Jan. Then we waited 4 weeks to rest and recover and Khloe was spayed on Feb 27. About two weeks after that Khloe was adopted by K and B.

The amazing transformation that occurred with Khloe was remarkable. She was very shy and timid at first. But she had excellent big sisters/mentors in Indy and Lauren. They showed Khloe how to wrestle and rough house, how to thoroughly thrash her favorite toys, and how to enjoy each and every day. FD was blessed to have known Khloe for five months. Even though we had been given a grim diagnosis Khloe continued to defy the odds and looked so well. A number of RAGOM volunteers as well as her parents were ever hopeful that Khloe would be the exception and be with us for more than 8 weeks.

On Saturday morning FD noticed a big change in our Khloe girl. The first thing was that she did not go bounding outside on critter patrol. Once back inside it was time for breakfast and Khloe turned and walked away from her bowl, even after FD added more tasty chicken to her dish. The moment I knew she was really not feeling well was when she totally rebuffed her favorite morning ritual of peanut butter toast. Later that morning Khloe began to throw up. After which she would curl up in a corner and sleep. I called K and B to let them know of the change in Khloe's condition. They came for a visit early in the afternoon. They could see the change and how tired she looked. After they left FD and Khloe enjoyed a lot of serious snuggle time. During the night Khloe kept changing positions every 20 to 30 minutes. We made it through the night and on Sunday morning Karen H (fellow RAGOM Foster Mom) came over to see Khloe. Khloe was more tired looking and her steps were slow and a bit jerky and wobbly. She would just collapse in a thud to the floor. Not wanting our Khloe girl to suffer anymore FD made the call to the ACH Clinic in Richfield. Dr. L and the staff did everything they could to ease Khloe's discomfort. Khloe was lying between Karen and FD while we both hugged and rubbed her and told her what a GReat girl she was Dr. L gave her the shots and in seconds our Khloe girl was free of her pain and that horrid disease.

The many memories we have left to cherish of this beautiful girl are her smiling face, her goofy expressions, her amber eyes, her puppy fuzz on the top of her head, her giant paws, her unique style of drinking water, and her soft luxurious coat with all of those radiant highlights. We will forever miss her way of slinking by my chair and turning her head as if to say "hey FD I'm down here give me some scritches and rubs". Then she would move ahead just far enough to signal that she wanted a good butt rub. When she had enough of that she would sit down and lean back into FD and lift her paw. These are the things that we will long for until it is our time to meet Khloe at the bridge.

Thank you to Jenessa and Matt K and Grizz and his Mom, Dayle for the spring fling tokens. Thank you to Khloe's sponsor Sandra Lynn. Thank you Karen H and to Khloe's co-parents, K & B, for all of the support your have given FD. Thank you to the H family for allowing RAGOM to care for Khloe. Thank you Janet and Dale F for transporting Khloe. Thank you to all of the Doctors and Staff at ACH/Inver Grove Heights/ Scott Lake Pet Clinic for all of the care given to Khloe. Thank you RAGOM fans for following Khloe's story.

Khloe was born on 6/15/2009 and departed us much to soon on 5/6/2012. Blessed be the many memories of our dear Khloe girl!

XOXO

Hello to all of Khloe's fans and Happy May Day to you!  Khloe wants everyone to know that she is still doing remarkably well.  Monday was the 6 week mark on her lymphoma diagnosis.  So each day that FD and his pack has with Khloe is a pure pleasure and a big blessing.  Khloe went to a bonfire party several weeks back (Thanks Beryl and Susan) and just wowed everyone there.  Khloe is an amazing dog that has gone through so many things in her life.

Khloe loves to team with her foster sisters (Indy and Lauren) on active guard patrol in the backyard.  I think the bunnies and the squirrels are keenly aware of this fierce trio of golden girls.  When not on critter patrol, Khloe can be found with one of her many toys (see picture).  She loves to give her toys a thorough thrashing and also "squeek-echtomy and de-stuffing surgery" as necessary.  She enjoys our walks in the evening and is always ready to hop in the car for a ride when asked.

Thank you to all her fans for praying for this sweet girl!  Thank you to Sandra Lynn for her sponsorship of Khloe!

Khloe wants her many fans to know how deeply grateful she is for all of those that have inquired about her. We are truly blessed that so far we have had really good days. We have to enjoy the days to the fullest as we don't know what tomorrow will bring. Khloe has a really good appetite and so enjoys the extra special food and treats she gets. Don't worry as her foster sisters and brother are always in line for the treats too. Khloe has enjoyed the nice spring weather and her evening walks down by the beach in Prior Lake. Last night she got some hugs and pets from some younger children that were visiting their grandmother and had obviously been helping dye easter eggs (the tell tale sign was their colored hands).

Khloe wishes her fans and the W. family a very Happy Easter!

Hey RAGOM fans it's me Khloe here.  I have so many things to tell you about since my last update.  FD apologizes for the long delay he blames it on the crossing of his old laptop over the rainbow bridge.

Here is what I have been up to.  I finished my last round of heart worm treatment a whole five weeks ago.  I have been doing just fine with no ill effects.  Last weekend (Feb. 25th) FD brought me and his Lauren girl to the RAGOM event in Rochester.  I got to visit again with Janet and Dale who transported me all the way from Rochester to FD way back in December.  I think they were impressed with how well I was doing.  Plus I got to meet so many other RAGOM doggies and volunteers and all those fine people that came out to meet the dogs.  One of FD's previous foster dogs (Hunter now Max) and his Mom came to visit.  Boy was that Max a good looking guy.

Almost 2 weeks ago FD brought me over to another RAGOM volunteer's house so I could me her and her newest foster as well as one of her cats, Snickers.  Thanks to Karen and Snickers I passed the cat test.  I chased a few times but Snickers knew how to hold his own ground.  By the time FD and I left Snickers and I were playing hide and seek.  I wish I knew how he could make himself disappear so fast, he must be related to Houdini.

On Monday of this week I went on a little car ride.  What I didn't realize was that it was to one of those pet clinics.  FD left me with those strange people and the next thing I knew I woke up feeling all groggy and a slight bit different.  Thanks to Dr. R. and the wonderful staff at Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital I won't ever have to worry about any puppies in my future!  FD came and picked me up on Tuesday before the so called big snow storm and brought me back home.  He keeps telling me I have been a model patient as I have left everything alone and didn't need to wear the dog's worst fashion nightmare (aka the cone of shame).  I did give FD my saddest look though and put my little lip out and told him he had better bring me some nice treats home to make up for that overnight stay at the clinic.  I have a new duckie and a new Kong Wuba, oh lucky me!

And now for the biggest news of all I have met a very special family and they have been coming to visit me for weeks!  They bring me tasty treats every time and they even brought me some toys to share with my foster siblings.  FD keeps telling me this couple wants to be my forever family.  He says that they will treat me like a princess and show me lots and lots of love.

Khloe will be with FD for just a little bit more time and the W. family hopes to make her a permanent family member around March 10.  So until then FD will keep giving this beautiful girl lots of love, tummy rubs, etc.

Enjoy the latest pictures of Khloe in the backyard with snow!

Hey RAGOM fans it's me Khloe checking in to let you know how my heartworm treatments have been going.  I had two more shots of Immiticide last week and boy did that ever throw me for a loop.  I was feeling pretty good on Wednesday night but not so much on Thursday night.  You see that Immiticide is a very potent drug, it has to be to kill those pesky heartworms.  FD could tell that I didn't feel so great when he came to pick me up on Thursday night.  He says I've kind of had my days and nights mixed up.  Actually I just could not find a comfortable way to lay down as it hurt where the two shots were given.  So I could only sleep for a few hours and then would have to get up and try a new sleep position.  Every time I did this my foster sisters and FD would wake up too even though I never cried or anything, it just plain hurt.  I am feeling better each day and FD is happy that the last two nights we have all slept without getting up in the middle of the night.  YAY!

Oh I have to give a big shout out to a little girl named Lyv.  She sent a note to wish me well and made a donation so FD would buy me some new toys to play with since I can't play with Indy and Lauren for a number of weeks.  Thanks Lyv and all of those generous people for caring about me!  I hope you enjoy my new pictures with me and my new toys.  I kind of de-stuffed that little tan and white bug today:( oops.  At least I still have some nice nylabones to chew on.

FD here.  I think the worst part of the heartworm treatment is through for Miss Khloe.  Through everything she has been so calm and tolerant.  Even when she was not feeling the greatest she still let that wonderful sweet personality shine through.  She got lots of quality snuggle time this past weekend along with many hugs and kisses.  She would like to send her love and thanks to all of those special people who care so much about her.  Especially Sandra Lynn for her sponsorship, Will and Ali, Lvy, K and B, Riley 07-646, and the RAGOM boys Teddy and Riley in memory of Cody!!!  Maybe someday Khloe will be able to thank you in person with one of her gentle paws up or nose nudge for some more hugs.  We will continue to follow the doctor's orders and keep Khloe from getting to excited.  Thanks again for all of the well wishes and for following sweet Khloe's story!

Khloe wants to let her fans know that she is doing very well so far with the heartworm treatment.  She will go back next week for the second and third dose of the Immiticide.  Hopefully she will fair as well with these doses as she did with the first dose.  The big concern is that the next two treatments will be given only 24 hours apart.  She will likely be more affected by this as the Immiticide is a very strong drug.

Khloe gives a big shout out to Will and Ali some of her young fans that were kind enough to adorn her page with a mitten.  You both rock!  We know you helped decorate a number of other RAGOM dog's pages.

Khloe has been enjoying her toys and chews that she received for Christmas.  One of her toys went to the rainbow bridge today.  I did not want to shame her by posting a picture of the toy corpse but this was the first time her crate was littered with stuffing everywhere when FD came home from work.

Khloe is almost always just a few feet away.  Even when I think she is sound asleep she seems to sense me when I try to tip toe out of the room and she is right behind me.  She also watches Indy and Lauren very intently.  I know she longs for the day when she came get in on the wrestle mania fests or the "squirrel patrols" in the backyard.  Fortunately for me Khloe is very good at keeping close by and seems to understand for now that she can not play hard.

Khloe is still not available for adoption.  After her treatments next week she will have a 10 week period of restricted activity (leash walks and no running or playing allowed).  Four months after the last heartworm treatment a new heartworm test will be done to make sure she is heartworm negative (this would be late May).  And then if all is clear we can talk about the spay procedure.  So even though it is the midst of winter, please make sure you give your pets heartworm preventative monthly.

If you are anywhere near the Lakeville area keep your eyes out for Kekoa.  We pray that someone will see this dog and help him back to RAGOM's care!

XOXO
Khloe
