04/19/2017:

I would like to introduce my new foster girl, Carly!

Carly is an 18-month-old Golden Retriever (date of birth: 10/15/15). She comes to us from a breeder. She had a litter of puppies a few weeks ago and did not want to be a mama to them. The puppies were given to a new mother dog to care for, and Carly was surrendered to RAGOM.

It is very obvious that Carly has not spent any time around people or seen the inside of a house. She is very fearful of everything except the other dogs in the house. She has all the characteristics of a Puppy Mill Dog.

She is young and even though she is afraid, she is also brave. I am hopeful she will learn quickly and begin to enjoy her new life as a family pet!

Carly went to the vet for her first checkup and to be brought up to date on her shots. She is in good health. She weighs 58 pounds. She does have an eye infection. She looks like she had a run-in with another dog and may have gotten poked in the eye. She is on medication to help heal that up. I will take her back to the vet to get it rechecked at the end of the week. As you can see from her photos, her eyes are a bit swollen.

Because Carly had puppies just a few weeks ago, the vet is recommending that we wait until the end of May to have Carly spayed. They would like things to shrink down and get back to normal before she gets that surgery. That will also give her the time she needs to become more confident and comfortable in her new surroundings.

Carly is available to meet her potential family. We cannot finalize her adoption until after her spay surgery.

Things she will need in her new home:

  • She will need a fenced-in yard.
  • She will need another confident dog her size.
  • Children should be 10 or above. She is afraid of little kids right now. This may change as she becomes more confident.
  • She will need Love and Patience.

I will update again soon as I learn more about this beautiful girl!

Updates

Carly had her spay surgery and eye surgery last week. She looked a little rough the first few days. Her eyes are almost completely healed and they look so much better. We just need to let the hair grow back, and you would never know she had surgery!

Carly also has some good new to share! She has found her very own forever family. She will have a fur sister to play with and a mom and dad that will love and care for her.

Congratulations to the N family.

Carly is doing well in foster care. She loves the other dogs in the house and gets along great with them. She is a follower, so whatever they do, she is right by them. This past weekend, we went to the RAGOM office. Foster Mom had a meeting there to talk about GOLDZILLA. We got there a little early, so Carly and I took a walk around the grounds. The office is located at SkyRidge Business Center & Nature Preserve. They have a very nice trail going around the preserve. Carly really liked it!

As you can see by the picture, Carly is wearing a Gentle Leader. She is doing great with this collar. She walks right by my side and doesn't do any pulling.

If you think Carly would be a good fit in your home, please submit an "Inquiry for Application" form. If you have already filled out an "Inquiry for Application" form, please send an email to applicationatragom [dot] org with the dog's name, RAGOM number, the name you submitted the Inquiry for Application form under, and a sentence or two why you feel you'd be a good match.

Carly has had a good week! She had a weekend outing to the Minnesota Arboretum. She was very nervous with the crowds of people. She did much better on the trails where there were fewer people.

We thought you might like a Carly update!

Carly is doing great. She has found comfort with the other dogs in the house.

She has also found pleasure in chewing on toys or a bone. She just needs to learn it is not OK to chew on the dog beds.

We took Carly on a road trip this past weekend. We went to the lake. Carly did great in the car.

We found out that she is a follower. She will follow my dogs everywhere. This is very helpful when we want her to go outside or to get her to come back into the house. While at the lake, she followed my dogs and enjoyed exploring the yard and woods. She even started following me around.

Carly has learned a lot in the short time she has been at our home. She is still nervous, but it does not stop her from joining in. She is now coming with us on our daily walks and is doing OK with a flat collar and leash. She does pull a little at first, then will settle in and stay by my side. We do a three-mile walk, and she is keeping up with the pack.

Carly is also doing great in the house. She has not had any potty accidents and is keeping her crate clean and dry. She does not tell us when she needs to go out; we just keep her on a good schedule, and that has been working great.

Carly had her recheck at the vet, and with some of the swelling gone from around her eyes, the vet has determined that she has entropion. This is a condition where the eyelids turn inward and cause the lashes to rub on the eye. She will have this repaired when she gets her spay surgery in a few weeks.

Carly has learned that the human touch is not such a bad thing. She is cautiously coming to me for pets. She even snuggled up on the sofa with me and took a nap! I did lift her up to be next to me, though it was her choice to stay and nap.

She is a very sweet girl!
