Little Laker has arrived in St Cloud and is enjoying country living:) I would like to send out a very special thank you to two great guys. John who does so much transporting for RAGOM. He got Laker to Joe in Worthington bright and early. Thank you, John. Joe is the brother of a RAGOM volunteer and he brought Laker all the way to St Cloud to me. He also made a stop on the way up to buy Laker a toy and bag of treats!! Laker would have preferred to stay with Joe and was kinda sad to have to go with me:( Thanks, Joe and John, you guys are awesome.

Laker came via one of the reservations in SD then a humane society, then into boarding. How could I resist this little guy. He is a cute little bugger with big brown eyes and a tail that curls. Breed? I haven't the foggiest, but wonder if maybe a little terrier and ??? (curly tail). Whatever his heritage he is a keeper. He arrived on Friday and made himself at home. He was a little cool with Faith (you will notice they look a lot alike) and my Jax to start, but has since warmed up to Faith and they enjoy playing together. His persistence paid off:) He kennels up on command and never a peep. I feed in 2 shifts so I feed Laker in his crate. I close the door and when he's done he pushes it open to let me know he's done. If he had his way he would sit on my lap and cuddle all the time. Where ever I am he wants to be. I have put a dog bed next to my chair and he is mostly content with that. I take turns letting the dogs sit up in the recliner with me, only when invited. He does like to put his paws up and beg for attention. He knows to come when called (recall is pretty good), he knows kennel up, treat, no and off. He does NOT know nor understand SIT. I have been trying to get him to sit in every way possible. He just has a thing about not sitting. Work in progress. When he's in his kennel I ask him to come out and he does. I have reached in and taken a hold of his collar and he has allowed me to take him out. However, he is more comfortable being asked to come out on his own. He isn't always fond of going outside as I think he feels like he won't be let back in. In time he will understand he will always be let back in. He has not marked or pottied in the house, except one night we came down to lower level and he was really sniffing and sniffing and all of sudden dropped his butt.......I yelled NO and got him outside. One kleenex was required for a small, firm deposit:)

He is smart. Smart enough to go up to the kitchen while we were all down stairs in the family room, open a drawer and pull out a loaf of bread and help himself. I suddenly heard a ripping sound and went bounding (well ok I walked) up the stairs to find Little Laker enjoying some bread. Not much, but I let him know this was not something that was acceptable. I wonder if he used to eat human food? No matter, he is now eating good food and treats and we have had no more drawer opening issues.

First day he was pretty much checking everything out and a bit hyper. He can jump up.......like right up on the coffee table to the couch. He was told NO once and removed and has never tried to get up again. He did put his paws up on the kitchen sink once while I was cleaning food off dishes, but again told NO and hasn't done it since. I can take his food away while he's eating, as well as toys or chews with no problem. However, if when he is in his kennel (door open) with a chew and one of the dogs walks by, he will give a warning growl, which is totally appropriate. Laker likes his kennel and will go in and out at will. He also likes to 'collect toy' and put in his kennel and has no issue going to Lady or Faith's kennel to check and collect from their kennels:) I took Laker and Lady 12-194 for a walk, both with flat leashes and he did well. He met a female lab on our walk and greeted her nicely.

We had the neighbor's grandkids (ages 3 & 6) over on Sunday to see the dogs. Laker did fine, no jumping up, nipping etc. A perfect gentleman. I think he would be fine with older kids that want to have a dog to hang with, snuggle and run a little. A fenced yard would be nice, but I think his recall is fairly good and with training he would do well. Obedience school would be fun for him and his family to bond. Laker would also do well as an only dog who got all the attention. He is, however, fine with the other 3 dogs here. He does not retrieve so if you are looking for a dog that wants to chase tennis balls all day, this isn't your guy. He also is good with my 3 cats when they appear, which is more than what I can say for my own dog and even Miss Faith 12-075:)

I love the attention

More attention!

This little guy just wants to be loved and to please you. I know you came to RAGOM looking for a golden or golden mix................but hey this is a golden boy in his own right. He's so loving, not a barker, listens well, would love to go for walks with you or snuggle up and watch TV. If you are an approved applicant looking for a little guy at about 45 lbs, this might just be the little guy for you. He's up to date on all his shots, neutered, has his Frontline and Heartgard in place and is ready to meet his forever family. He does have worms and we are on his 4th treatment right now and he has 2 more to go for now. He is also good with the cats, pretty much ignores them.

Enjoy the pics of this little sweetie. The weather is suppose to get warmer, which means POOL TIME, so will see how he feels about wading pools!!

Come meet Little Laker at Chuck & Don's on Saturday in Blaine:) Treats are welcomed!!!!

I am so sad to report that a tragic accident took the life of our beloved Laker yesterday.

Laker came to us in September from the loving home of Joyce Nelson--and was once known as Sam (a feral dog, who foraged for survival on an Indian reservation). Despite years of neglect, Laker settled into a near-perfect life with Joyce, and when she handed him off to our family, it was with mixed emotions. She truly loved him, and he loved her. Had she not believed she had found the right family for him, Joyce would gladly have kept Laker forever.

This knowledge makes the circumstances of his death even more difficult because there was a strong element of human error. Since our yard does not have a physical fence, we walked Laker two to three times each day, including first thing in the morning. But due to a perfect storm of exceptionally chilly weather, an 8 a.m. conference call, and a lingering cold, I decided to have him "go" in the yard quickly and defer a walk until later. I thought about putting a leash on him, knowing he had some chase tendencies, but he was also an extreme Velcro dog and had never ventured further than the neighbors' tree in circumstances such as this.

As he was looking for a spot to do his business, a school bus came up the street. Laker charged at it barking, and my calls to come back made no difference. I believe the impact was fatal almost immediately and that he didn't suffer. His body was limp when I picked him up and brought him inside. A short while later, an emergency veterinarian confirmed that he was gone.

In addition to immense grief, we are also grappling with the guilt of having allowed this to happen. Knowing that having a dog outside without a leash is not against RAGOM policy but is not a good idea, especially with a rescued dog. After talking with a compassionate volunteer, however, it became clear that this was an opportunity to remind others that dogs, and particularly rescue dogs, can be unpredictable.

We will miss Laker forever. He was a precious gift to our family and can never be replaced. Lesson: Don't ever take your dog's behavior--or his presence in your life--for granted.

I just wanted to update everyone on how Laker is doing in his new home. WONDERFULLY, SUPER, GREAT...........well you get the picture. He has been in his furever home for one week and all the reports are good. He is sleeping on the floor in the master bedroom and only jumps up when parents don't get up when he thinks they should:) He is eating well, and that is no surprise. He is walked 3 and 4 times a day and is slowly dropping the weight FM allowed him to gain:( He is very social when meeting people and dogs on his walks, which make those walks so enjoyable for every one. I am just so happy for him and his family, but I do miss his cuddling with me on the bed. I know as the weather gets cooler and winter arrives we are all more house bound, but with Laker's new mom, walks are a daily thing, so he will be so happy.

I'm thinking there might not be an ounce of GR in him, but his personality is Very Golden. Just like his family:)

Hugs, LakerMan, we miss you.

Life is sweet

Monday, September 24, 2012

When you have had a foster for a few months, learn about them, try to explain that foster to potential adopters, you put a lot on your self to find the right furever home. In the years I have been doing this I have had some 'unique' fosters, ones that people passed on and I felt it was my fault for not being able to present them in a proper light. But as with all those special and unique fosters before, I came to realize it was really just a matter of waiting, hoping, believing and finally knowing when the right family came along. And so it is with Laker, the perfect furever family came along. He will be with his Mom all day as she works from home. He will have a teen age boy in his life that is the perfect young person for him. His Dad met him yesterday and knew what his wife and son knew after their first meet with Laker.................he was the one.

This gentle spirit came to me via a reservation, a humane society and then boarding by RAGOM. We had our potty issues, getting into the bread drawer and the garbage, but also learning just what a gentle soul he is. He met a couple families and it wasn't right. When he met his soon to be furever and mom and human brother, he knew they were right for him. As did I. So I spent the last week looking at him with those big brown somber eyes and telling him he would be leaving me, not because I didn't love him or want him, but because there was a family that needed him more than I did. His new mom wanted a companion and being such a momma's boy I knew he would be happy with her. She would understand his storm anxiety and be there for him. I so wanted him to understand that I was letting him go, not sending him away. That for me is/was the most difficult part, letting him go and knowing he would not understand, at least for some time. How bittersweet to see him leave with his new family. I like his new family so much and know he will be happy with them, but good bye is goodbye at least for now. Knowing I can see him again down the line lightens the sorrow of his leaving.

I received an email from Laker's new mom which I would like to share:

Hi, Joyce. We've been home for about an hour and a half, and Laker seems to be doing very well. So far, he has eaten his dinner of dry Blue Buffalo, gone for a walk around the block, sniffed the entire yard about three times, pooped, and met the neighbors and their cat (and made a very good impression). He checked out the house for about 15 minutes, then settled into a resting spot near my computer and appears to be on the verge of sleeping. Unbelievable.

Will shoot you a note tomorrow to let you know how the night goes.

Perhaps he understands more than I give him credit for. Jax will miss his "Chippy watching partner" and I will miss his gentle presence. I do know one thing for sure: He is with people who will love him and cherish his gentle soul and being. And when all is said done, that's what I wanted. That's what Laker got.

We miss you, Laker Man,

Laker here. Ya know that saying "good news, bad news"? Well, it's kinda like that here for me right now. I've been here since June, settled in, made friends and now Faith is being adotped. That's kinda the good news/bad news thing. I'm happy for her, good news, but will miss her, bad news. Faith and I got in some 'stuff' this last week. Well, really it was more I moved the gates and she found the paper, and well, guess the picture says it all, huh? FM didn't get mad, said it was her own fault for letting Faith out with us big boys. Personally I'm fine with it all, but when Faith is out we have to be gated to the kitchen and that I'm NOT fine with. I like my freedom and so was just kinda looking for that when moving gates. Know what I'm saying?

Oops

I'm kinda a shy guy....well ok I'm very shy guy, a momma's boy, and don't do well meeting new people. But I've been trying to be better. So when Faith's new mom and dad came here I made a real effort, I gave the lady kisses and let the man pet me. Pretty good huh? My FM got an email from a placement advisor and said someone wanted to know more about me. So I sent the family an email and told them all about me and how I felt (incase FM left anything out:) So today the lady and the teenager came to meet me and they had special treats!! I decided I liked them a lot. More than that I decided I liked them even when they didn't give me treats:) So, I have to meet the man/dad and I hope he can come next week end. I'm not saying it's a done deal or anything, but my FM really likes the lady and really really likes the teen age boy. So we will see what happens, but feel free to keep your fingers crossed for me.

Hoping for my walking papers

If I'm not adopted I will be going to a new foster home the end of the month, the same time Faith will be leaving for her furever home. My FM is having hip surgery and so can't foster for awhile and another great foster offered to take me. So I guess for now we will see if I go to my furever home or my new foster home. Stay tuned for my updates.

Meanwhile, I have a yeast infection in my paws and so FM is bathing my feet every other day with a special shampoo, leaves it on for 10 minutes and then rinses it off. Then she puts on a 'leave on conditioner'.......all I know is it feels good and smells good. But not so good that I try to lick it off. The other thing we found out is I love strawberries and peaches!! FM makes fruit shakes and since I'm always there to supervise, one day she gave me the top off the strawberry and to our surprise I liked it. Who knew!!

I have a secret

Well, FM needs the computer and pretty soon we have visitors coming to stay the week. Brandy the Golden and Zeke the ball crazy German Short Hair:) They have been here before, but not since I've been here. They usually go to their 'grandma's' who is a RAGOM volunteer, but she can't do it this week. Since I like all the dogs I have met, I'm gonna say I will probably like them. I'll let ya know next week end after they leave:)

Have a great week
Laker

The 3 musketeers

Monday, September 3, 2012

Life is pretty good for Laker since FM figured out something very important. Laker does NOT like to go out in the back yard at night, even with the lights on, to potty. So if FM takes Laker out front he is more than happy to pee on bushes out there!!!! Laker now has free roam (no food in sight) and sleeps in the bedroom on the bed at night. If there is a storm coming he gets Rescue Remedy and is crated for everyone's safety. He remains a good eater (too much so and has to lose a couple pounds), is still pretty mellow, likes to hang out with his peeps, and will give Faith 12-075 'what for' if she gets too rough or wants to play and he doesn't.

Yesterday we took all 3 dogs to the lake. I was surprised but Laker loved the lake. He wasn't frolicking in it, but when I went in he came in. We didn't get deep enough to have to dog paddle:) I took him for a ride on the jet ski!! He actually liked it, and when we got back he didn't just jump off....either he wanted another ride or was terrified to get off, but he's fine. He greeted everyone at the lake with barks and a wagging tail. When the neighbor dogs were out and he wanted to go, he stayed. When one of the dogs came over to meet the kidz, he was friendly.

Laker enjoying the water

Faith, Laker, Jax

So over all Mr Laker is doing good all around. Still hasn't caught Chippy the chimpmunk, or the squirrel who is storing up the acorns from our yard, but he continues to be vigilant in letting us know if they are around.

I understand people's hesitation on not wanting to adopt Laker when he was having potty training issues, but hey, he's doing great. He still won't sit on command, but that's ok I guess. That's his quirk and heaven knows they all have one.

We ended up with a problem with mites so the dogs are all getting shots for that. After his second shot on Thursday he will be able to meet other dogs at the house. Or if you don't have a dog but lots of love and attention to give, he's pretty much ready any time:)

Give your placement advisor a quick hey and we'll talk.

Have a safe holiday week end.

FM and the crew

Monday, August 27, 2012

Apparently my updates aren't too good since no one has inquired about Laker. Since I am always honest and up front about my fosters, I tell if they have had accidents in the house or not. I'm thinking this is maybe scaring some of you future adopters off. Please don't be. He has been accident free as of late. Still no real 'sign', but I make sure he gets out. He stills hates to go out at night, and many times just goes to his crate when everyone else heads out. He seems to have mastered the 'holding' pretty good.

Do you see Chippy....

As you can see by the pictures he is still in 'find/catch' Chippy mode. Mmmmm I would really hate to see Chippy caught:( Our daughter and 19 month old grandson were here for 10 days. I have to say over all Laker was really good. He did give Gaige a warning growl a couple of times, very appropriate and after that we kept a watchful eye on Laker and Gaige when they were togeather. As you can see by the picture, they had their good moments too. Gaige lives with a black lab/pittie female and a male American bulldog, both of which are very good with him. Since Laker had been around the older grandkids of our neighbors we knew he was good with them...ages 4 to 8, but no idea about a busy toddler. So I would say a home with a toddler would not be a good fit.

Laker and Gaige hanging out together

Laker is a very sweet boy, with his own little quirk about going outside. I think he is afraid we'll never let him back in, but always do. We have discovered he has storm anxiety......we were gone one day at an appointment and a storm hit. As soon as I could I rushed home. Laker had moved around enough in his crate that he had moved it a couple of feet. I have been using Rescue Remedy spray and it helps. I have no idea what he would do if he were not crated when a thunder storm hit. A storm hit one night and I was awakened at 4 a.m. by Laker howling and rattling his crate. I went down and got him and he ran right to the bedroom, jumped on the bed, cuddled up and didn't move the rest of the night....well what was left of it. Since then I have allowed him to sleep in the bedroom with Jax and Sam 07-690. I do keep the door closed so that if anyone needs to go out they have to wake me. So far it's been fine, no accidents. I think he is feeling better about being one of the 'big kidz' and sleeping with them.

It's hard to put into words what a sweet sweet boy Laker is. He is loving, a bit velcro, walks well on a flat leash, has good recall, has gotten along with every dog we have met, loves to chase chipmunks and squirrels, plays with Faith 12-075 and resident Jax. He plays a bit with toys, but loves the chew things like a hoove, bully stick and must have been fed people food cuz there is nothing he won't eat. He also loves fruit!! He isn't a big barker unless someone ( umm resident dog) starts. He loves to curl up on the little bed in the kitchen or the couch in the family room. He knows the treat is coming at bed time and waits for it, but still won't sit for me and I've tried it all. He knows which crate is his, never goes in the other ones, and when told to 'kennel up' he goes right to his crate. When all is said and done, he just wants someone to love him, take him for a walk, or a run in the field, feed him and give him lots of pets. He is good about nail clipping and brushing over all, but doesn't have a lot of patience so you gotta get to it. He LOVES LOVES LOVES to go in the van for rides and is really good, though would prefer to ride shotgun, which resident Jax takes.

Laker's favorite place in the kitchen

I would like to see Laker go to a home that he isn't left for long hours. Someone who would love him for who he is, a quirky and loving dog. He would be fine with or without another dog, and with or without a fenced yard. Walks would suffice and an occassional play date would be fine too. He would love to run errands with you when weather permits. Mostly I would like to see Laker go to a home that invites him up to cuddle, is ok with him following you to another room, no toddlers, dog savvy kids, and patience to understand and be able to deal with his storm anxiety.

I really can't believe no one has snatched this sweet little guy ( 37 lbs ) up yet. He is an awesome companion and doesn't bug the older dogs, is up to playing with the younger ones when so inclined, but mostly he just loves his humans. So if you are an approved ap contact your placement advisor and come meet this sweet boy.

It's been a bit busy around here and thus slow on the updates. Laker is doing wonderfully, no accidents since my last update. He has had a rough time though. There was someone coming to meet him, but the husband got sick. Then I noticed Laker was really chewing at his tail, upon inspection I found a big red sore spot. Off to the vet only to find out more bad news. Not only did he have a reaction to a flee bite (we had a round of fleas:( ) the top of his upper jaw was inflamed. Since he came vetted I never checked his mouth out, he was eating hard kibble fine and no problem taking a treat. Imagine my surprise and horror to find out the top jaw in front was inflamed and his front teeth on top and bottom needed to be removed!!! They were stubs and receding into his gums and very painful. He ended up having the front 6 teeth top and bottom removed. He came through with flying colors and came home and is feeling good. His mouth is still sore, but since he uses his back teeth to eat he has been able to remain on dry kibble. The vet also determined he was at least 4 years old, so we are upgrading him to 4.

Laker is really a sweet boy, loves to help Jax try to find Chippy the chipmunk, will play with Faith when he's feeling better, was good with the 3 little dogs that were here for the week end, his recall is still pretty good, he is now crated when we are gone and bed time. Tonight when I got home from shopping I let all the dogs out and he had to do #2. Now you have to understand in the past he would've probably just dropped the bomb up in the kitchen while FD was down in the family room watching the Olympics. Instead he waited til he was let outside. I have been praising him each time he goes potty outside. Many times when the other dogs want to go out, he goes to his crate and waits for us to come back in. I am learning to trust that when he doesn't go out it's because he doesn't have to go. He hasn't let me down as of late.

Lake, Faith and Laker

We are going to TX on business and so a family member will be coming to stay while we are gone. This is DD's mom and DD the yellow lab will be here to help entertain Jax and Faith 12-075. It will be interesting to see how he does with a new human in charge of life here. I think as long as I'm not around he is fine with anyone, as he goes to my husband when I'm gone and will get petted and go out side for him. So I have no qualms about leaving him here with another person.

So, if the potty accidents have been putting you off to meeting Laker, or you are worried he won't bond with a man, no worries. He is doing well and enjoying his attention from people in general. If you would like to meet Laker or have any questions, please contact your placement advisor if you are an approved applicant.

Stay tuned for his update after our trip:)

I'm a mellow kinda guy

Sunday, July 15, 2012

I'm a bit behind in updates since I have 3 fosters and cousin Daisy Duke (DD) for a little family time. Laker made it through the 4th of July with no issues. It was really quiet around here, which was awesome. No thunderstorms lately, not so nice, we need rain. Laker has been enjoying chasing with Jax and DD after tennis balls. He actually has brought it back to me a couple times and let me have it. He finds it more fun to just chase the ball chasers:)

Faith, Sam and Laker

Laker and Sam giving chase

He has gotten a bit territorial about the couch even when I'm not on it, so a quick NO and he settles down. He is fine with Jax up there by him, but if Faith or DD come by, well not so much. Over all he is pretty easy going. We have his crate out as a place for him to go to if he wants. He has been sleeping in the bedroom now for awhile with no problems. I decided to be brave/stupid/curious etc and let all the dogs be free in the hall, kitchen and family room. So Jax, DD, Faith 12-075, Laker and Sam (who's not on site yet) all had a few work days enjoying the 'free life'. Well I didn't see anything in the way of accidents etc, nothing chewed up so thought, wow this is going good. Until I went to clean the hard word floors and realized there had been some accidents........one of which involved the couch. Mmmmm, didn't see who it was, but I have a pretty good idea. However, I didn't punish anyone by not letting them continue to sleep in the bedroom. So I thought ok maybe too much freedom. Then the other day all the dogs are in the family room playing and Laker and DD had a good bout of wrestling and suddenly Laker walked over to the door and dropped his butt!!! Oh my, guess the urge just hit. To be honest I'd rather pick up #2 than clean up #1!! He was told 'NO, OUTSIDE POTTY, NAUGHTY BOY, then took him out to potty..........like he had anything left?

So there is the naughty Laker. His good qualities far outweigh a couple accidents. He loves me which makes him wonderful in my eyes:) He is very much a woman's dog. He loves to cuddle on the couch, chair, bed anywhere with you. He keeps his eye on me and if I get up and leave the room he is hot on my feet. He is now eating in the kitchen next to resident Jax and still acting like he's starving after he eats. He is smart, but I still can't get him to sit. Go figure!! His recall is pretty good and he will walk with me without an issue. He is not high energy in so far as needing a lot of exercise, but show him a squirrel or chipmunk or gopher and he is all over chasing it. He has never snapped or even growled at us and I can still take him out of his kennel when I think everyone should go out to potty one last time and he doesn't think so. He knows the routine and waits for his treat and then is ready to head upstairs to bed. He doesn't try to get on the bed except in the a.m. if he wants out and I'm not awake yet:)

He is over all the sweetest boy ever. Accidents happen and some times they are my fault for not seeing his sign, or I have given him too much freedom and sometimes a guy just has to go and heads for the door but doesn't make it. I won't ever not tell 'all' about my fosters, but I think if you look at any dog, there is a little something that isn't perfect in all of them. I know I'm not.

Laker did meet a wonderful and kind family last weekend. However, they have long days and are gone about 9 hours a day and it just didn't seem to be a match. The family was wonderful and we spent a few hours together and I think we all learned things through our time together. I know there is a right dog for them, and I truly believe there is the right person for Laker. I guess they just haven't read about him and understand how much he has to offer.

Meanwhile, the troops are up from their naps so we need to take a quick break. This weather is not conducive to heavy play in the middle of the day outdoors, but the cool lower level works just fine for rough housing.

Happy week end from the troops:

Master Laker is doing well over all. He is very much 'my boy' and still thinks he can tell the other dogs to not get up on the couch by me. I let him know that's not appropriate. He is fine with the toys etc but when it comes to the hooves, he lets everyone know in no uncertain terms to back away. He has shown me that he knows how to chase a tennis ball and bring it back. He doesn't give it to me, but usually drops it behind me:) He loves to chase Jax and Lady 12-194 when they go for their balls. He is just such a sweetie who wants to be loved and basically the center of your world.......aah men:)

He was so good at the Pride Celebration. He is a bit busy in the van so I have found on longer drives when going by myself he does better in his crate. I still crate him when we are gone. Though as I said last update, we left the 4 of them in the dining area of the kitchen and he was fine. He is still a bugger about going outside and going potty in the sense he wants you to go with him. Then the next time he is at the door with the rest of the crew raring to go. If Chippy the chipmunk is out there, EVERYONE wants to go!! He has a pretty good nose.

Laker was a sweetie and perfect gentleman at the Pride celebration. Many people and dogs and nary a growl or any misbehaving. He did get nervous if I got out of sight. Over all he was a good ambassador for RAGOM, showing a Golden personality and charm. He did well with the donation vest on and did his fair share of collecting. Being a proud big sister I have to give a shout out and thank you to my brother Chris who gave a $100 donation to RAGOM. AND all the people who donated, every bit is appreciated and needed. Every rescue group had their dogs and donation vests on and people were very generous. I hope every group garnered interest and found new people applying to adopt.

Not knowing Laker's history it has been wait and see, try and keep moving forward. He has never snapped at me, he has been good playing with Faith 12-075, and has even played with resident Jax. His crate is still his safe place, but if I'm home that's where you will find him, next to me. If I get up from the couch and go to the kitchen, there he is. But to be fair so are the rest of the crew.

He simply will not go for walks with FD. He has tried and tried and each time Laker manages to get out of his collar and head back to the yard to me. I can no longer walk in the field, so instead I hit tennis balls and walk around the yard with him. He really isn't high maintenance, but as with any dog, he needs his exercise, be it a walk, playing ball or playing/chasing another dog. He does love his food and you would think he was starving after he ate his cup of food, but at 36 pounds he is at his perfect weight. Unless his activity increased his 2 cups a food a day is just right.

We aren't sure what 'mix' Laker is, but I know he is a sweet boy, bonds rather quickly, is good with dogs and cats, but if a new dog arrives he can get a bit territorial. We have Lake the lab from next door with us this week end. My Laker was right there checking him out, though they have met before in the yard. I think once Laker feels he's 'home' he is a bit protective, but he doesn't get nasty. He loves getting his share of attention and loving, he is not a big barker and behaves well in the bedroom at night IE doesn't jump on the bed:)

Laker has family coming next week end to meet him, so hopefully it will be a match. It is time for Laker to find his furever home and family and start the rest of his life as a forever family member. Stayed tuned. Since Laker does have some storm and fireworks anxiety, I have the rescue remedy handy and will be home with him on the 4th when it gets really 'busy'.

Just a reminder to keep your dogs safe this holiday season and during this horrible heat. Make sure they have lots of water, a cool place to rest, don't let them get over heated, don't make them go on long walks on hot cement, and if they have fire works anxiety have a safe place for them, such as a crate with blankets over it to make it like a cave. Also Rescue Remedy works well for many dogs. You can also use a thunder shirt or put on a t-shirt and tie it snugly to help them feel secure. Surviving the 4th can be trying for the dogs and families, but with love, patience and the right remedy we'll all come through ok.

Happy 4th of July and a huge THANK YOU to all our service people and their families!!

Hi, had to send pics in of me going to FM's work. Yep, Friday was TAKE A DOG TO WORK DAY, so FM did. We all piled in the van, posed and headed in to work. As you can see we pretty much took over the place. We were all good, went out to potty a couple times, played, barked at everyone who walked by and made a new friend, Ruth. Ruth reads the RAGOM site all the time, and then she read in the paper FM was bringing us to work, so she asked if she could come see us. So Miss Ruth came to meet us and spent time hanging with us, and best of all, loving us all up. I think you can tell we enjoyed her visit. But we also had some down time under FM's desk.

Hi ho hi ho it's off to work we go

How many dogs can you get under FM's desk?

Welcome to our work

Laker and new friend Ruth

I have earned the privilege of sleeping in the bedroom now. I am really good and get so excited after we get our treats and I get to go with Lady Katy and Jax upstairs. I stay off the bed all night, but when morning comes, Lady and I jump on FM, give some morning kisses and then we all head downstairs. For a grumpy old lady who doesn't like mornings, she is doing really well LOL

We have been given free roam in the kitchen/hallway a couple times now. Today it was for 4 hours and we were all good. I was in Lady's crate when the FP's got home. They had fed us half our dinner portion before they left, and then FM went to feed us again when they got home. She was kinda surprised to find someone had pottied by Lady's dish and on the stove. Guess some one lifted their leg.................so guess I'm not 100% yet, but I'm trying. I just don't know what comes over me........

I am getting attached to my FM and so she says I really need to find my furever home soon. I would love to be the center of some one's world, I wouldn't need another fur butt sibling, but would be fine with one. I"m really a good boy, loving and friendly, and yes I have an accident now and then, but I'm learning. Please think about how I might fit in your family. I would be really good with anyone retired or who works part time. I love my crate, so no problem having to crate me while I continue to get to that 100% trained part.

Today Faith 12-075 and I are going with FM to Pride at Loring Park in Minneapolis. That ought to be exciting. Maybe I'll meet my furever family there. I just know someone is looking for a sweet boy like me:)

OK time to get my treat and head to bed. Big day tomorrow.

Sweeet dreams

Laker here, guess I get to do my own update. Life is pretty mellow most of the time, unless Faith 12-075 wants to wrestle. Then it gets a bit crazy. I am a pretty laid back kinda guy. I'm good going for a walk, snuggling on the couch, chewing on a hoof or hanging in the back yard. MY FM says I wag my tail more and come for affection more so guess that's good. I don't like it if Faith or anyone tries to get up on the couch when I'm sitting by FM, so I'm working on 'sharing'. When FM is on the computer I like to lie under her desk.

Laker likes it under the desk

I did get into trouble, and I'm really sorry. I peed twice on the couch and it ran onto the wood floor. Because it was between the couch and the table no one discovered it until FD moved the couch to vac (one of his jobs). Guess one time is an accident, but if you do it again.........FP's aren't happy. But since they didn't see me do the deed, they couldn't say much. I am trying to be better and have been. I just don't know how to tell them when I have to go out, so I kinda rely on when everyone goes out I go. Many times I go into my crate and don't want to follow everyone out and then FM comes and gets me and makes me go out. While I like my walks etc I guess I prefer to be in the house.

Saturday we had a big storm here, plus one of the neighbors did fire works. The fireworks were a bit unsettling, but the big storm. ,,,, Oh boy!!! I woke FM up about 2:30 barking, which I never do. I had an accident in my crate and the storm was really bothering me. So, here we all are at 2:30 a.m. watching FM wipe up poop outta the crate, then take all of us and the crate outside to get sprayed out/cleaned. Meanwhile we discover the neighbor kids are having a party and some new car showed up so Jax had to let the world know about that. Well, anyway, the good news is I got to sleep in the bedroom that night and was good as gold, I even stayed on the floor. So am now allowed to sleep in the bedroom. FM got some Rescue Remedy and Valerian root, and this morning when our storms were rolling in I got a couple sprays and we all hung out togeather. So will see how I do when the big noisy storm comes through next. I think I just like to be with my people cuz I really don't do anything bad. I kinda pace and pant and then want to sit next to or on FM's lap.

Where did my crate go?

I got to go to work with FM yesterday along with Jax. I was good as gold. As soon as we got there I went out back and peed and was good til we got home. I met one of the guys in the office who is a DOG LOVER. He sat on the floor with me and gave me treats, even though I wouldn't sit:) I wasn't scared to get in the van and go to and from work. FM said it is best when we go somewhere for a distance that I be in a crate as I like to go back and forth between the back and the front seat. I'm good with that.

Laker at work... working

Laker and Jax getting love at work

Faith 12-075 and I are going to Pride Celebration at Loring Park on Sunday. We will be at the RAGOM booth from noon to 2 p.m. And FM says she knows the way there.....course parking is always a challenge, but we hope for good weather and know there will be lots of people to meet as well as other dogs. I'm kinda getting into this whole going to meet n greet things. I really like people and other dogs. After Faith everyone else seems pretty calm:)

Oh, before I forget, I went to the vet with Lady 12-194 for her ear recheck and I got weighed. A muscular 37 lbs. Great things come in small packages:) I have not had any more 'accidents', I am sleeping in the bedroom and today FD let us ALL be in the kitchen while he ran for a hair cut and we were all good. I see free roam down the line:)

OK, guess Faith and Lady are doing their own updates today too, so guess it's my turn to get outside and enjoy some sun shine and less humid weather.....for the moment. Hope some of you can come see me on Sunday at Pride!!

Gentle kisses

Laker

Lil Laker is doing so well. He plays with Faith and they play hard. He still eats in his crate and prefers to sleep in there. I took him up to the bedroom last night and he wasn't sure what it was all about. The biggest issue for him was he wanted to sleep on the bed and I wasn't going to start that. So I asked him if he wanted to go to his kennel and he went to the door and off he went. I think this is still his safe place and that is fine.

Laker is a shy boy but once bonded with you he is a lover. I'm sure he had free reign on the reservation, then was at animal control and caged, then to boarding, then here. What a lot of change for a young guy. It's hard to explain how sweet he is, but if he wants Faith to back off he has no problem letting her know with a warning growl which is appropriate. He loves his humans, and right now FM more than FD. He won't go for a run in the field unless I go with. I think in time if I weren't around he would bond with FD more. He just so deserves a home where he is IT. He really doesn't demand a lot of exercise, he's not a barker per se, just wants to be loved and feel safe and secure. I know he's not Mr Spunky, but when he's looking at that chipmunk he gets all excited along with Jax.

Yesterday I was home, upstairs in the bedroom, the slider was open and the dogs were running in and out. I had gone down to the kitchen and called the dogs and they all came right away except for Laker. Very unusual. But eventually he came in. I went back up to the bedroom and the dogs were in and out. Suddenly I hear what sounds like a jiggling dog tags. I look out the bedroom window and don't see any dogs. Then it hits me.........I call Laker's name and sure enough he comes around from the front of the house. I headed downstairs for the kitchen and by the time I get there he's on the deck. AAH HAH moment. He was climbing the 3' deck gate and wandering around checking things out. The good news is he never ran off and always came back. The downside is we had to add a board to the top of the gate so no more climbing out. What a smart boy.

I always tell people who are interested in one of my fosters that even if they catch your eye, it's not until you meet them that you know. I think it's the reverse for Laker. I think people look at his pic and keep going, and without ever meeting him can never tell how sweet and loving he is. This boy will walk and run with you or sit in your lap and watch T.V. He is so happy for any kind attention he gets, he's good with the dogs and 3 cats here, he was good with the kids when they came over. I really don't see any negatives here. He is potty trained as best as we can tell, never caught him going in the house, keeps his kennel clean, doesn't carry on at night or even in the morning. He just waits for you to come down. He doesn't carry on when we get home from work, but sits nicely and waits for you to let him out.

We went to Chuck & Don's for the Meet N Greet on Saturday. He met every dog and every person with only sweetness. No tussles with any of the dogs. He stuck pretty close to me and was a bit nervous when I went into the store or went with Faith to meet someone. He's just not the kind to go running and jumping up on people. Once comfortable he is loving the attention. I think of him as my 'toddler' trying to be brave but still attached to mommy:) There's a whole new world out there and he's just not sure about it. His new family is who will help him to make that journey. Sadly I forgot my camera so no pictures.

Lil Laker is just waiting for someone to discover just how GREAT he is, what a Golden personality he has and the love he has to give. If you are an approved applicant, would like to meet this sweet little guy, contact your placement advisor and we'll go from there.

Sweet kisses from Laker

Happy happy boy
