Lewey is a puppy mill Golden Retriever from Missouri. He came to Minneapolis with 2 brothers, Hewey 04-069 and Dewey. Lewey and his brother Dewey are currently being treated for Juvenile Cellulitis (puppy strangles). JC is NOT contagious and the symptoms are usually noticed in puppies 4 weeks to 4 months of age and lasting approximately 2 weeks. The darkness around his nose and eyes are some of the symptoms of JC. There are no long term effects besides localized hair loss - in some cases. Lewey's treatment is 1/2 tablet of prednisone and 1 capsule of cephalexin every 12 hours. He will be going to the vet for a follow-up appointment this weekend.

We are in the process of potty training Lewey. We crate him at night and during the day while we are away from home.

Lewey is very intelligent and has a sweet disposition. He knows his name and usually comes when called (he is after all still a baby). Lewey is energetic and likes to follow his foster brother around the house. He LOVES the snow and makes the cutest snow angels (puppy style). Lewey is a cuddler and is content to lay in our laps for quite a while.

Lewie came to us in the spring of '04. He was from a Missouri puppy mill. He had "puppy strangles" which can be deadly to puppies if not treated.

As I looked and contacted RAGOM about many dogs on their website, I always looked at Lewie's updates. Not inquiring about him because the puppies were always pending or adopted. When I got an e-mail from Lew's foster mom wondering if I would be interested in him, I could not believe he was not adopted or had someone waiting. YES I was interested. She informed me he was passed up by many families for one reason or another. WOW my luck.

In Dec. of '06 I became a foster. And Lewie has been the best foster brother ever. From puppy mill dogs, to puppies, he's shown them the way. I think it is his way of saying Thank-You to RAGOM for saving his life. I couldn't imagine our life without him.

Lewey is simply the best. He will make some family very happy. He loves everyone he meets...he loves to be outside and checks out every corner of the yard every chance he gets. He is in love with my dogs and plays with one or both whenever he can. He still likes to follow my younger dog around the yard and they are a striking pair, my guy is sleek, dark red and very shiney...Lewey is like a little sheep, his nick name is fuzzy wuzzy and he's very blonde. He's soo cute!! He has gained so much confidence over the past few weeks.

Lewey has had an adventure filled week, he's been out and about and done really well. He still gets scared when he's outside and something unexpected happens and he runs to the back door but he soon ventures back into the yard. He has taken to following my younger dog around the yard which is pretty cute...my younger dog is dark red and sleek and Lewey is very blond and fluffy...quite the contrast. He has been on long walks (always with one or two of my dogs) and because he is so cute we have to stop and talk to people at least a couple of times...our walks have been taking quite a long time. He trots right along, he likes to stay close to another dog but when we encounter scary situations he keeps going, he might lean on the other dog, but he keeps right on going. When we meet new people on our walks he is very social and goes right up to them for petting. Our big remaining challenge is getting him to pee in the grass on a consistent basis...he still likes to pee on the cement. But with all that he's figured out in the past week or so I think we'll conquer this problem as well....we've gone thru a bucketload of treats but he's making progress. He has been home alone for several long workdays and done just fine in the crate, no accidents or other problems. He's ready to go to his permanent home, he just needs someone with a little patience to work thru his few remaining problems...another dog in the house would be a big help but with his young age I don't think it's a necessity.

Lewey continues to be the nicest dog...a very calm puppy. He had a vet appointment today and had a distemper booster, will need another booster and his rabies in a month. His puppy strangles is gone and we will begin to taper him off of his medication, he will still take medication for the next few weeks but it will taper off gradually. While at the vet he had the chance to meet his brother Dewey...they look alike...two little fuzz balls. They recognized each other and immediately started playing...very cute! He weighed in a 21 pounds...according to what I've been told he is 14 weeks old. Other than a little eye infection which was given to him by a swipe from a nasty cat we visited, Lewey is in good health. He seems to be housebroken, although I kennel him when I'm gone and he sleeps leashed to the bed so he doesn't really have free reign unless somebody is home. He has been getting a crash course in socialization over the past few days and in many ways is typical of other puppy mill dogs I have fostered. He is fine within his comfort zone but he does better with another dog when out and about in the big world. He is a cuddler and a lover and I believe he will come around and become a wonderful dog for some lucky family.

Lewey has adjusted to his new foster home without missing a beat. I'm in love!! He's the CUTEST, SWEETEST little guy I've ever met. I'm sure I need my head examined for not keeping him, he's going to be the greatest dog for some family!! He gets along with my 2 male goldens and he submits to my 9 pound kitty, he is too cool!
