Lindy 05-188

Profile

6/26/05: Sweet Lindy arrived at our house this weekend and what a doll! She was a stray turned over to RAGOM, but it is so obvious that she has been well cared for. She is estimated to be about 3 years old and about 65 pounds - just a perfect size, and is beautiful all over! She appears to be in great health and we will be taking her to the vet this week for an update. Lindy is playful, gets along great with our resident Golden and is settling in very nicely. Lindy will make a wonderful family companion.

Our beloved, trusted, smart and beautiful golden retriever, Lindy, passed on to the rainbow bridge on Saturday, June 1. We were blessed to have Lindy join our family eight years ago when we adopted her from RAGOM ((Retrieve A Golden Of Minnesota) in June 2005. Lindy had a wonderful personality and disposition. She fit so well into our family. Of course anyone who came in contact with Lindy fell in love with her.

We had been taking Lindy to the Iowa State University Veterinary Clinic for the last three years, trying to deal with her Cushings disease; a disease that affects the adrenal glands causing her to drink excessive water along with labored breathing to name just a few of the effects. The treatment at Iowa State was quite successful until the last couple of months.Over the course of the years Lindy gave us many wonderful memories. Here a just a few of the highlights of our wonderful golden:

  • When we first got Lindy in June of 2005, it was so hot, being good pet owners, we thought she would enjoy cooling off, so we bought her a kiddie pool. We set it up and she looked at it. Pete lifted her up and put her in it. She didn't move. She looked at us and seemed to say, "get me out of here" which of course we did. She did not like the water. Lindy tolerated bath time only because treats were involved!
    • About the only time Lindy seemed to like the water was when the girls were out on the kayaks. They were close to shore this particular day when all of a sudden she ran out into the lake. She didn't want to be left out of the fun!
  • Lindy had been given many a toy during her life in Owatonna. Amazingly she still has all of them with maybe only two of the many having a rip in them. So was so gentle.
  • When Lindy would want to go outside she would gather socks and if socks were not available, she would take a toy and stare at us and/or look at the door. She was a good trainer, it didn't take us too long to learn!
  • Lindy enjoyed her walks. She got the most fun experiencing the new smells on the trail, and frightening the ducks, geese, turtles and deer. She kept us safe.
    • On one walk at 5 am, Pete and Lindy were walking down a street in Owatonna. Then Pete had a feeling that someone was close by, watching them. It happened to be a policeman in his vehicle. He stopped them and asked if they had seen anyone on their walk. Then specifically the policeman mentioned the person was last seen at the hospital wearing white garments! Pete said no that they had not. After the policeman left, Pete felt lucky to have Lindy by his side.
  • Lindy enjoyed looking out our front door. Every now and then when a squirrel, rabbit or cat would get too close to the house, Lindy would roar and jump at the door causing us to jump out of our chairs! Once our hearts got back to a more normal pace, we would say "good dog."
  • Our family was back visiting Pete’s parent’s house in Waterloo. We had been in Waterloo for the weekend and were about ready to leave. Pete's Dad had practically ignored Lindy the whole weekend but as we were saying our goodbyes, Lindy sat down by Pete's Dad and pawed him until he acknowledged her. His Dad had to chuckle about her tenacity and of course shook her paw.
  • Lindy was the honorary mascot on the girls soccer team. She just loved the attention.
  • Lindy enjoyed listening to music. She would sit right in the middle of either the girls music practices or group solo ensemble practices.
  • Joann would occasionally take Lindy to a dog park. Lindy would greet all the humans and then she was ready to leave. Only on one occasion, she and a Great Dane enjoyed each other's company. Both were quite mellow and preferred humans over canines.
  • Joann took Lindy for a ride in the van (which she loved) and on this particular trip went to the grocery store. Joann got the groceries and then decided to make another stop before going home. After she was walking back to the van, it dawned on her that she left the groceries on the floor with meat, and several other edible options. When she got back in the van, Lindy was still on the back seat and never touched the groceries. We doubt many dogs would probably have done that!
  • Lindy made a wonderful patient, both at the Veterinarians office and on the occasions the girls would play doctor with her. She would lay patiently on the bed while the girls checked her vitals!
  • We put up a fence in our backyard after Lindy was with us about a year to keep her safe from other dogs and creatures outside our yard. Interestingly, if we went inside, Lindy would almost always follow us.
  • One summer afternoon when Joann and the girls were home, Lindy all of a sudden was trying to get Joann’s attention. Joann figured she had to go outside so she opened the door to the backyard. Instead of going outside, she bolted down the basement stairs. It was maybe five minutes later when the tornado warning sirens went off. Lindy was quite the meteorologist!

We have several people to thank for Lindy's care. First of all our veterinarian, Dr. Krumm of Owatonna Veterinary Services and his staff; Iowa State University veterinarian Dr. Otoni and staff at Iowa State University Veterinary Clinic; Sonja and Gary (Lindy's foster parents); Ronda (owner of DAWG Boarding in Walthum, MN) and many other friends that watched over Lindy. We thank this wonderful group of people for the attention and kindness they provided Lindy. And a thank you to RAGOM for giving us the opportunity of allowing Lindy to join our family.
We will sorely miss our beautiful Lindy. She touched our hearts and everyone else she came in contact with.
