In addition to LOVE this dog has the following requirements:

This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Louie is a gorgeous purebred Golden. His build is slender and lanky, weighing 78 pounds. He has a beautiful deep golden coat that is a bit wavy and low maintenance. Louie is a returning RAGOM dog because his adoptive family had a change in circumstances and were unable to keep him.

We have had Louie about two weeks now and he is, simply put, a fabulous dog. He is house trained, crate trained, respects baby gates and loves everyone that crosses his path. We have lots of kids in and out of the house - he loves to greet them but never jumps up and is very gentle.

Louie just turned two. He is full of energy and loves to PLAY!  He would love another playful dog and a fenced yard so they could wear each other out. I don't think a long slow walk will be enough exercise for him at this age.  He does make an excellent running partner and is good on leash.

Louie will be getting his wellness check at the vet this week. He does have a stubborn hot spot on his back knee that he loves to lick when I am not watching, so we will get that checked out this week as well.  When we are sleeping or at work and unable to keep a watchful eye on him, he does have a soft cone he wears. It doesn't bother him at all.

Sweet Louie is currently snoozing at my feet with the other dogs and cats curled up around him. He is the best snuggler. Contact RAGOM if you believe you would be the perfect match for this wonderful guy.

Updates

Hi, Louie fans!  He has been doing great at his foster home and his lick granuloma is healing nicely!  As you can tell from the pictures, he now gets to enjoy some free time from the e-collar!  We still use it when I'm at work and at night when I can't watch him, but everyone is enjoying the fact that he doesn't have to wear it 24/7.  The good news is that he doesn't mind wearing it, though.  He will finish up his antibiotics tomorrow and we will continue to wean him from wearing the e-collar.  It's likely that once he gets adopted, due to the stress of moving to a new home environment/new family, that he may start to bother the area again, so he may need the e-collar at first in his forever home.

Louie is having a blast here with his foster brothers!  He loves to run and play in our yard.  His favorite game is keep away from our puppy, Sully; although he does love to chase Sully, too!  Louie also loves his walks and walks great (wearing a Gentle Leader) with our dogs.  At night, Louie loves to lounge on one of the dog beds and chew on a nylabone or elk antler.  He's been such an easy dog to have in our home!  Louie loves human attention and is very treat motivated, so we've been working on his obedience training.  He already knows quite a few of the basics, so we are reinforcing those.

I forgot to mention in his initial bio that he weighs about 66 pounds, which is a great weight for him.  He's a tall Golden (all legs!) so he appears to weigh more. Our RAGOM vet was happy with his weight.  Louie LOVES his food and eats out of a special bowl to help him slow down while eating.  He's usually still the first to finish his food, though!

We want to thank Louie's sponsors for their heartfelt donation!  Thank you so much, Kathy and Jim!  Louie sends his love to you!

Original Bio:

Welcome to RAGOM, Louie 15-232!  Louie was lovingly surrendered by a family that felt that he needed more exercise than they could provide.  We know that this was a very difficult decision for them, and we promise to find him the perfect forever home that is dedicated to giving him a lot of exercise through walks and play time!

Louie is a 20 month old PB Golden Retriever.  He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and heartworm and fecal negative.  He is very healthy except for a lick granuloma (with a hot spot around it) that he has on his right rear knee.  We have had to keep him in an e-collar so he won't lick it.  I've given him breaks from the e-collar when we go on walks and when we are just hanging out, but he still wants to lick at it most of the time, so we are having to keep him in the "cone of shame" until it heals.  Luckily, Louie doesn't mind wearing the e-collar, and he doesn't let it slow him down when he's running around with it on in the yard.  We are hoping the lick granuloma will start to heal now that he's not able to lick at it.  They can be caused by a wound that he just kept licking until the skin was moist and irritated, or he could be licking at it due to stress.  It is something that will need to be monitored to make sure he's not licking at it once he stops wearing the e-collar, but it isn't anything major and it will likely clear up once we get the licking cycle stopped.

Louie was raised with children and has done great with my 11 year old daughter.  He would do fine in a home with any aged children.  He is a tall dog, so he may unintentionally knock down little kids, but he seems to be pretty gentle and aware of his surroundings.  The first few days he did show some interest in my cats, but now he mostly ignores them.  He has played very well with my two resident Goldens, and he is learning how to share toys and people's attention.  He was an only dog in his prior home, so he does not require another dog in his forever home.   Louie does know several commands and he walks nicely on a leash using a Gentle Leader.  During the week, we take 2 walks per day plus play time in the yard.  On weekends, we either take 2 really long walks or 3 regular length walks plus playtime in the yard, and he loves all of the exercise!  He especially loves playing fetch and going for walks in the state parks.  Louie is a very well behaved dog and isn't really high energy, which is nice in a 2 year old dog!  He does love his walks and exercise, but he's not relentless about getting exercise.

Louie is crated during the work day and has done well.  He did have 1 accident in the house one night when I left him with free roam, so now we are gating him in the bedroom to sleep and he's done fine.  No other accidents, so after he gets to know the home and routine, I would say he's housebroken.  Louie rides really nicely in the car and he loves going for rides!  Louie is used to having a fenced in yard, although I think he would do fine without a fence as long as he was given plenty of exercise.  He would need to use a tieout or trailing long line currently as his recall isn't 100%, but with training he could be allowed to be off of a tieout and trusted to stay in the yard.  Louie would love to go to the dog park to run and play safely!

Here is what Louie is looking for in a forever home:

  • A family to give him a lot of exercise every day!
  • A fenced yard isn't necessary, but he would like to be able to play fetch somewhere where he is safely contained!
  • Another dog isn't needed, although he would like to have play dates occasionally!
  • A family that will love him as much as he has already experienced throughout his entire life!
  • Toys... lots of toys!

As you can tell, this boy is pretty much perfect and will make an excellent family member for almost any of our approved families!  If you are interested in Louie, please contact your placement advisor today!
