Welcome Magellan!

I picked up Magellan after a long transport on a rainy Saturday afternoon.  A big thank you to the volunteers who drive long distances on short notice to help these dogs find homes.

Magellan is very energetic yet he is very mellow.  His paws and head are so big I think he still has some filling out to do.  He met the two resident dogs without a problem.  He completely ignored the cat who was looking on from her perch.

I don't get the idea that he was used to being indoors.  He is a counter surfer and everything goes into his mouth.  I guess I'm going to have to dog proof the house again.  He respects the baby gate - although he could easily crawl or jump over it.  He kennels nicely when I am not home and overnight.

He is very eager to please, and I think he will take to training readily.  I already make him sit and stay for his supper and sit and shake hands for a treat.

He was neutered and brought UTD on vaccinations in his stay at the shelter before coming to RAGOM.  He needs to have a wellness check and get microchipped and he will be looking for his forever home.

He plays to the same level as the resident dogs even though he is much stronger.

I just wanted to let you know that Magellan has continued to make me and everyone he meets so very happy! He is such a smart boy, we've been busy learning stay, heel, drop it, kennel, and treat! He is also an avid sports fan. He watches football games with my roommate intently! I've had lots of fun buying tons of toys and introduced him to a squeaky toy last week...he was so scared! Now, I have to hide it at bedtime or we never hear the end of it!

He loved following my parents golden Zeke around and now that we are at my apartment he is a bit more cautious, but we are getting used to all the new sights and smells.

Magellan had his RAGOM vet visit yesterday.  He was very interested in meeting the other large dogs that were there. He was completely disinterested in the cats and the small dogs. He was very well behaved and cooperated with the staff from beginning to end. Matter of fact, the vet said if she were in the market for a new dog she would take him in a heartbeat. Magellan got a clean bill of health and the vet agreed that he is still a young dog with some filling out to do. He weighed in at 72 lbs.

If there aren't any distractions Magellan meets people very nicely.  If you start to pet him on the head he will sit in front of you and want to shake hands. He still wants to jump up occassionally, but we are working on that. If you keep petting him he will roll over because what he really wants is a belly rub.

He is a dream in the car. I put him in the back of my wagon and he lays down until it is time to get out. Doesn't make a sound. He is the same way in his crate. He sleeps through the night and doesn't make a peep. He still can't be trusted outside of his crate as he will pick items off the counter, out of the laundry basket, etc.

He matches his play with other dogs to their level.  He and my resident golden take turns being the instigator. Magellan would be good with another dog, but I also believe he would do well in a home where he is the only dog. He really wants to please and will train very easily. Magellan has been with us for just over a week and he is beginning to settle in nicely.  I have cleaned the house to make the counters "dog proof" although he still finds ways to get into trouble.  One day last week he took a bite out of a full roll of toilet paper.  If I leave the bedroom door open he will be dragging socks out of the laundry hamper.  He will cheerfully exchange the socks for a ball or a bone.  I have learned if he is quiet and I don't see him sleeping he is probably into mischief.  The good news is he plays very well with the resident golden and he does take regular naps.

Magellan is very social and loves attention from people and plays well with friendly dogs.  He listens well and has learned "leave it" and "stay" in the last week.  He will be having his wellness check next week, but he is ready to start looking for his forever home.

I have not had a chance to "kid test" him yet, but as gentle as he is I would think he would be good with older children.  He is big and fairly excitable so he may not be a good match with smaller children just because of his size.
