Marley was returned to RAGOM because his family felt he had some issues they couldn't handle. He arrived here on Friday (August 19) afternoon. Apparently he was an excellent passenger on the drive to his foster home. He met the three resident boys and and visiting RAGOM alum with no issues at all. I do think he was a bit overwhelmed at first by the four strange big dogs. Once we went inside, he got to meet the two cats. He had never met a cat before....so it was done carefully, with him on leash....it too was a non-event.

He is crate trained. Because I have an extra dog this week, I've been feeding Marley in his crate. He has eaten well and we will be transitioning him to Fromm's over the next few days. He is also housebroken and didn't even try to mark when he first arrived. So far, no accidents....although he has been tethered to me when he's not crated, so he hasn't had much chance to do anything wrong. He slept in his crate last night and was quiet all night long...and the crate wasn't even in the bedroom.Marley has recently been groomed and he has a short, very soft coat. His personality so far reminds me more of a Poodle than a Golden or a Lab. He has a sharp Poodle-like bark which reminds me totally of a standard Poodle I know. He's also quite small, not more than 50 pounds, with a lighter bone structure than most Goldens or Labs.I'll learn more about him over the next few days. We have a lot to do before he's ready for adoption and we'll update again as we learn more.

This is a letter from Marley, #14-022, who I adopted from RAGOM in September, 2016. Marley wants to thank RAGOM for believing in him, let you know how much he loves his furever home, and share some photos with you.

Dear RAGOM,

I want to thank you sooooo much for not giving up on me. Even though two families gave up on me, RAGOM saw the good in me! Because you cared about me, treated me well, and encouraged me, I found my furever home! Three’s a charm, just like the saying!

I also want to thank RAGOM for having such a great website so my furever parents could find me and I want to thank my foster parents who took the time to write about me and post my photos! That is how my forever mom found me! She said my photo instantly touched her heart! Who can blame her, I am a handsome guy!

My furever mom also wants to thank RAGOM for the detailed process it goes through with interested adopters! She said each step was essential for her to know how much she wanted me, for RAGOM to know that I would go to a loving home, and for me to be sure that I wanted to be adopted by them! It was a win-win for all three of us!

In addition to my thank you, I want you to know how delighted I am to be with my furever home!!!! It took four years to find them, but it was well worth the wait! They have an unconditional love for me and they show it to me every day! Even though I have an issue or two, they keep telling me I am THE BEST DOG IN THE WORLD and they are soooo lucky to have me!

Right from the beginning, I got to sleep on mom’s side of the bed. While mom is the primary parent (she takes care of me, trains me, walks me each day - yup, even in the rain & snow!), dad loves me too because he takes me in the car each day to do “guy errands” and plays tug-of war with me. I love them both! I get free run of the house all the time (2 whole floors!), I have lots of toys, grain-free food, and oodles of pets & hugs. I mean the world to them and they mean the world to me! I am about to graduate 1st in my class at the Beginner’s Obedience Training Class and I am already registered for Intermediate Obedience Training. Once I qualify with Pet Partners, mom and I will be bringing smiles to cancer patients and military veterans! As a treat, mom will take me to the Tricks class and the Agility class. We have soooo much fun together! I feel so secure with my furever mom & dad, that people now describe me as “super mellow” and “so well-behaved!”

I have enclosed some pictures of the fun and great life I have with my furever family. Again, thank you for making this all possible! RAGOM will always have a special spot in my heart, and in the hearts of my furever parents! Thank you RAGOM, for I am finally living my dream!

With A Paw & A Lick,

Now that Marley's been here a couple of weeks, we know him a lot better. He is a very sweet dog. He will let you do anything to him. He is also super smart. He's definitely got the Poodle brains and personality. He even barks like other poodles I know.

He is very busy and will definitely look for trouble. He counter surfs. He looks for garbage. He begs for food. He paces around looking for someone to antagonize. He does get along with everyone, but he can try to be pushy....but he's not very good at it. He will bark in another dogs face, then back off at high speed. He will chase a cat, but run away as soon as the cat turns and hisses at him. My cats are not scared of him at all.

I've changed his fence requirement to optional. I don't think he'd do well with an invisible fence, he's very soft and I don't think he'd like it. A real fence would be nice....but I'm pretty sure he can easily clear our four-foot fence, so it's a false sense of security. No fence would be fine if you have a plan to keep him safe. I do believe he would chase cars....so in my backyard, I've been keeping him on leash, sometimes he just drags, it but most of the time it's being held. He does all his duties on leash so that should not be an issue. He also can't get a running start to clear the fence to take off after a car if he's on leash.

He's a nice dog that will need his adoptive family to keep him busy.

Marley went to the vet today. He did well in the car and he did well at the vet. They needed to give him some shots because he did not come with any records. He also had a heartworm test. We'll hear about those results early next week. He checked out well and didn't mind the poking and prodding. He weighs 46 pounds which is a perfect weight for him. Everyone commented on what a neat dog he is. When they brought him out from the back room, I was in the lobby. I called him and he was very happy to see me.
Marley is just a great dog. He needs to be kept busy and he needs to have direction. His personality is predominantly that of a Poodle....so be aware of that. He is not just a Golden with a non-shedding coat. He also will need to be groomed regularly....in the way that Poodles are groomed....a full body trimming...every couple of months at the most.Marley14022d1.jpg

After a few days with Marley during our typically hectic week, I do have a few more thoughts on him. When they breed for a doodle, they don't know which personality will be the dominant one.  Marley has a 100% poodle personality. He is very, very smart. He is also very, very busy. And he WILL get into trouble if he gets bored. He looks into trash cans, he stands up to look at what's on the counters, he checks out places my Goldens would never think to look. He does listen very well when told no and has a nice recall in my yard.
He has done perfectly well home without humans and has made it through a full eight-hour workday. This is a rarity at our house, but it did happen once this week. He was crated and there were other dogs present. Zero issues.
The one thing I need to think about is whether he needs another dog....but he does need a real fence (it says in his original paperwork that he doesn't have a good recall if he gets loose). We haven't (and hopefully won't) test that. He has lived with kids and I think he would be fine with kids of any ages. He can certainly live with other animals, cats, dogs, birds because we have tested all that.
As I get to know Marley, I think he needs to have something to do. As a result, we are looking for someone to adopt him that wants to do obedience or agility with him....I actually don't care what it is, but he needs to be busy...and he needs direction.  I don't just mean an eight week session of obedience, I mean someone who wants to pursue titles...or maybe just several levels of obedience, then onto another sport. I think he would love something like agility....or maybe tracking...or any of the other canine sports that are now so easy to access.
So if you are looking for a smaller doodle and plan on doing lots of training with your new dog, please inquire about Marley. I will update again after our vet appointment this weekend.

Original Bio:

Marley arrived on Saturday, January 25. To say that we've fallen in love with this handsome guy is an understatement. As I write this, he has taken over my pillow on the bed, and clearly thinks I've got the floor for the night!

Marley is a very well-mannered, gentle dog, and also very playful and active. He likes nothing better than to be outside, playing with Cooper, our resident dog. He has also started to believe that he is a lapdog, despite his size. He loves all the attention he can get.

Marley went to the vet on Monday and everything was great with the exception of his weight. He weighed 43 lbs, but should weigh close to 50 lbs. We are already working to remedy that!

Marley loves:

  • Walks
  • Playful dogs
  • Being outside
  • Being by your side
  • Sleeping in the bed
  • Playing fetch and tug-o-war
  • Treats
  • Road trips...hops in his kennel immediately

Marley is very good with other dogs. If he is near a smaller dog who is fearful or barking, he is very careful and keeps his distance. We haven't witnessed any aggression or growling from Marley. Although we haven't cat tested him, we assume he would be similar to how he responds to small dogs. He was previously in a home with two children under five and did well with children.

We think Marley is wonderful, but there are a few things that we need to reveal. Just as we declared Marley the perfect pooch, he decided to give the new foster parents a few laughs. The second night Marley was with us, I removed a homemade chicken pot pie from the oven for supper and then went into the laundry room. A few minutes later, I walked into the kitchen and noticed that the deep dish pie plate was licked clean, and Marley looked not only uncomfortable, but very guilty. Yep, he is a stealth counter surfer. While he is usually really well-mannered when not devouring pot pies, he may refuse to come inside, even after playing outside for quite some time. Really good treats do the trick, however. Most importantly, Marley is quite obsessed with chasing cars (the reason he was surrendered). We haven't witnessed this, but it was such a problem at his previous home that he would chase cars until his paws bled. For this reason, Marley absolutely needs a fenced yard. He just wouldn't be safe without one.

Marley needs a forever home very soon or his foster parents may not be able to part ways with the beautiful fella! We love him, and you will, too!
