Max 04-064

Profile

Max is a four year old neutered male. He is very dark red and has a beautiful coat!!! He came from a loving family that consisted of a mom, dad, human brother under age 5 and an infant. He was surrendered because his family couldn't give him the attention that he deserved and Max doesn't understand his size in the presence of their infant. He has never shown any aggression towards the kids, but tends to knock them over.

Max's mom sent him with all of his stuff to make his transition more comfortable. He came with his extra large kennel, an extra large bed, two bags of toys and bones, a tall water and food bowl (so he doesn't have to strain his neck when he eats), and all his food/treats! The family who adopts him will get to take it all (and believe me, it's nice stuff!!). His mom has also said that she would like his new family to feel free to call her with any questions or concerns that they have about Max. She included a two page typed letter about him with her contact info at the bottom (and has asked me to send it with Max).

Max was very nervous coming to my house as he 'knew something was up' when he saw his stuff being collected and packed from his house. As he entered my house, he was immediately greeted by my 20 lb dog with a growl and a nip. Max was scared out of his wits! Poor guy. However, he is no longer afraid of my little dog but stays far, far away from my big dog, the alpha bitch, Diva. Max has a good sixth sense!

Medical Conditions - Max was born missing some bones in his front leg. The vet stated that there is no way to fix it but that he needs to maintain a healthy (lean) weight so that he doesn't aggravate the situation. I personally would never have guessed that he had any kind of 'condition' as he runs, jumps and walks like any other dog. He sometimes gets sore after long walks and gets an 81 mg aspirin to ease the stiffness. He is up to date on his shots but due this spring so I will take him in for a check up and updating.

Personality - Max is extremely friendly with people and submissive with both people and dogs. He immediately rolls on his back for belly rubs from new guests. He's good with kids, dogs and cats. He tends to be submissive and nervous of dogs who show any kind of dominance or aggressiveness. Max would probably enjoy being an only dog or with a very, very "dog friendly" dog. He loves to be petted, chew bones, go for walks, hang outside and look at the wildlife. His family said that he doesn't ride in cars but that has not been my experience (and I've only had one so far). He apparently doesn't like to swim (which reminds me of the Land of Misfit Toys on Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer .....a train with square wheels, a 'Charlie' in the box, and a golden who doesn't like to swim?!). haha. His mom said that he pulls on the leash so they used a pronged collar on him (which he came with). However, I used the gentle lead and he was fine after 10 minutes of playing bucking bronco.

He is potty trained and has never had an accident in his prior house (or mine). He has had two nervous vomit incidents since yesterday which is no big deal. He eats and sleeps well. He has no inappropriate chewing, scratching, or jumping habits. He likes walks, but doesn't need extended walks to be happy. He enjoys sleeping in his kennel and will put himself to bed when he's tired. He also likes to hide in small spaces (on top of my books on the shelf under my coffee table????). I have no idea how he fits there.

Future Family - Max would like a home where he is the only dog or with a very 'dog friendly' dog. He should be in a home without infants; merely because of he doesn't understand his size. He should go to a family that understands the importance and responsibility of proper weight management with Max to prevent any problems with his leg. Max would do well in just about any kind of home as he is what I call an "Instant Family Dog...just add food/water and enjoy. No assembly required."

On Saturday, December 22nd, we helped our beautiful Max cross over the rainbow bridge. We held him in our arms and told him how much we loved him and how much he meant to us. He looked at us with his goofy smile and peacefully passed away.

Max was the light of our life and everyone who met him. On our daily walks we passed a senior housing. He would always stop and greet the residents who were outside. It made his day but also made those senior citizens day a little bit brighter.

He loved to go for car rides. No matter what the temperature, his window was open and with head out the window, he caught all the smells and sights of the neighborhood.

His favorite place to go was our cabin up north. He had acres to explore and visited with all our neighbors and their fur face pets. Boat rides were a must. He was very curious about the loons but also respectful. He could not swim (he was missing bones in both his front legs) but he could wade in the water and chase the minnows.

For the almost 9 years he was with us he never barked. Once in awhile a little woof but that was it. About 6 months ago he discovered his voice. Out of the blue he started barking. He liked to wake me up at 5:30 am with repeated barks in my face. He looked so silly, we both had our private time very early in the morning.

Max had a girlfriend named Maggie. Max loved Maggie. He would lick her from head to tail and make a complete fool of himself. Maggie tolerated him and once in awhile returned a lick (not very often). Maggie passed away last March and Max missed her so much.

Another of Max's quirks. When he was very excited, he sneezed. Not just once or twice but multiple times. I think the record was around 22 times.

Our home seems so empty now. We know he is in a better place but a our hearts are aching.

I thank RAGOM for sending us Max. Our pets are here for just a little time but I hope one day we will all be reunited.

From Max's new family...

Hi Jennifer,

First off I loved your update on "Frankie" - I am tempted to send it to the Pioneer Press "Bulletin Board" - what a hoot. I sent it to a friend of mine who is thinking of adopting a dog - I have steered her toward the RAGOM website. She has 5 grown children and has such funny stories to tell about them - thought Frankie would give her new material.

Here is the picture I took of you and Max the day we adopted him. If you do not have a photo printer I would be more than happy to frame a copy for you.

Max & I went to the Lake last week end to bond and relax. That was a laugh - the relaxing part. To make a long story short, we were 1/4 mile from the cabin, road was icy, and I put the car in the ditch. We had to make numerous trips between the car and the cabin hauling his food and my food, my laptop and backpack. We also tried to dig my car out - that didn't work - pour salt under the tires and that didn't work, This whole time Max is having a blast. He is running in and out of the woods, checking on me once in awhile and then he is off again. He didn't even mind the long card ride - 3 hours. He paced a bit the first 20 minutes then settled down the rest of the trip. The trip back home he was a seasoned traveler. Oh, I did have to call a tow company to get me out of the ditch. They only work Monday thru Friday and I guess not on weekends unless it's an emergency so Monday Max & I made numerous trips back and forth reloading my car.

I did change his food - he just was not eating the food you sent home with me. I switched him to Innova - a holistic diet - he loves it. He did not have a problem with the diet change and seems a lot happier.

Max does like to relax in odd places. He sleeps in bed with us at night but during the day he camps out on our fireplace hearth - no, we don't let him up there when we have a real fire.

Take care.

Max here. Just a note to say that I've picked my forever family! I met them, fell in love and packed my bags immediately. I didn't even wait to give my foster mom a good bye kiss- (sorry mom-jen I forgot in all the excitement). I get a mom and dad all to myself!! We will have many visitors at our new house as my mom and dad have grown children of their own and several grandchildren and grand-dogs. I fit in real well as Max is a family name. I'm Max II.

We have a park in our backyard for walking (and on lazy days I can bird watch from my very own bay window)! We've got a 'cabin' too....I think it's called 'up north' they say that's where we go on the weekends. We spend lots of family time together there-kids, grandkids, and dogs!!! There's a lake and a boat! I hope my foster mom didn't tell them that I don't like to swim as they might think I'm goofy. Maybe I can just ride in the boat and sniff the fresh air!

My new family is very dog experienced as they've had large dogs for over 30 years! ANNNNND, I have a new girlfriend, Mattie, who wears me out as she likes to play, play, play!! Girls.

Max and new friend Mattie

My family already called my foster mom to say that they just love me as I'm the perfect boy! Isn't that sweet?! And, they lived happily ever after.....the beginning.
