Welcome to Ragom Max 08-419. Max arrived in Ames, Ia Monday afternoon and we are so excited to have him. We want to sincerely thank all that helped get Max to us especially Heidi who spent her Labor Day bringing Max safely to Iowa. Now for what we know about Max so far. He is a 2 1/2 year old neutered male weighing in at 72 lbs. He is light golden in color. Max got up to date with his shots while in temporary foster in Minnesota. He has an ear infection in both ears which we are currently treating. Max is a little bit shy but a very sweet boy. He is already coming out of his shell in the short time that we have had him though sudden movements do kind of scare him still. He loves to be petted but is not pushy about it. He is a happy golden who gets along great with our dog, Mia. He does wonderful with all our cats ( 2 resident cats and 5 foster kittens) and was curled up last night with them on the couch. He hasn't had an accident in the house since we got him on Sunday so I think that he is pretty much housetrained. We keep him baby gated in the hallway/laundry area during the day and has been fine with that. . Max does not mind people or animals near his food bowl but he does not want to give rawhides back once he has them and did growl when we got too close to his bone. No teeth bearing or snapping though. He is fine sharing his toys though and loves to play fetch. We haven't had him around kids yet though he was said to be fine with the two kids in his previous home. Max walks really well using a gentle leader. While our resident dog still tries to pull even though it is on, Max is very easy going and just walks right beside you. Max really is a great boy and will make some family very happy! Max got to meet a wonderful family today. They drove 4 hours roundtrip to come meet this wonderful boy. They fell in love with him and decided that he was definitely the boy for them. Max is a very lucky guy. He will be spending his days living the golden life with the H family. He has a mom and a dad, two human kids to play with, two dogs to play with, and two cats, which probably won't play with him, but will be fun to have around as well. We will miss having Max in our home, but are very excited that he is going to have such a GReat future with such a sweet family!

Hi Max here, just letting everyone know I'm doing great in my foster home. I had a good weekend going for walks, playing fetch and watching football with foster dad (I'm not sure what he finds so interesting about it). I'm getting better with stay and will wait till FM puts down the food and says okay until I eat. I'm a quiet guy and rarely bark, I leave that for Mia the resident dog. She loves to talk. My coat is looking better and better and my ears are doing great now. FM says that I am ready for my forever home so if you are interested in making this sweet, easygoing guy your friend for life please e-mail placementatragom [dot] org! I would love to meet you! Hi, Max here, just wanted to update you on how things are going. Foster mom and dad took Mia (resident dog) and I to the ISU tailgate (go Cyclones) this weekend and boy was I a hit. Everyone loved me and I got petted by the young and old alike. I basked in all of the attention and was very well behaved the whole time! I am very good with the Gentle Leader and walk like an angel when it is on. As far as commands go, I know how to sit and drop right now, and we are working on stay. I will come when I am called on my own terms while in the house, but should always be on a leash while outside or be in a fenced in backyard. I will try to run if I get away from you. I do not countersurf, and am respectful while people are eating.

I went to the vet yesterday and he said that the ear infection looks to be clearing up really well. The vet said to just keep him on the ear medication until he completely stops itching his ears. He also said that Max's ear canals don't look like ones that will have chronic ear problems which is good news. He also took a look at Max's skin and coat which was very dry when he came to us. Max really doesn't lick or itch himself much so the vet thought it was probably just a combination of low grade allergies and living out in the elements, plus being on a low quality diet. Since he's eating a better diet and living the indoor life now hopefully, we will see a steady improvement in his coat.

What Max needs in a forever home:

  • Another dog would be great but he doesn't necessarily need one. He loves getting all the attention.
  • He would do fine in a home with cats as long as they are used to being around dogs (he will chase if they try to run from him- not in an aggressive way but in a playful way)
  • Max would do great with children as long as they are not really little (he can get pretty excited sometimes and might knock them over)
  • Max needs an active family who is willing to exercise him on a regular basis (he loves to walk, jog, or play fetch)
  • A fenced in yard would be great but not a must if the family knows that he always needs to be on a leash.
  • Lots and lots of love!

From Max's temporary foster:  My family fostered Max for one week at the end of August when he was new to Ragom.  He was a delight and adjusted to my family very quickly.  He is very gentle and loves to be petted and to snuggle by people.  He always seems so happy and I never heard him bark, though he did kind of growl at his shadow in a window.  He stayed off our indoor furniture except for at night where he slept like an angel next to me on my bed.  He was in love with my 10 year old daughter- or anyone who would keep petting him.  He does crave attention by people but is not at all overbearing.  He is great on walks-pulls some on regular collar but easily handled even by my daughter, and walks perfectly on the gentle leader.  He is going to make someone a great companion.
