We welcomed Mia into our home on Saturday and she is such a sweet, beautiful girl! She was a stray found in Iowa that was kept by a good samaritan for a week until we could show her the RAGOM life. Mia went to the vet to be brought up to date on her shots and get micro chipped on Sunday. The vet estimated her to be maybe between 2 and 3 years old. I'm almost guessing she might be 1-2, but either way she is young. We know she has golden retriever in her, but we have no idea what she's really mixed with. Just a good old heinz 57! Regardless, Mia weighs 50 lbs, so she's a little on the smaller side for a golden. We saw a scar on her belly, so we are pretty sure she is already fixed.

Mia has stolen the heart of her foster dad (they all win foster mom's heart!) with her incredibly mild personality. She likes to play with toys and other dogs, but she's not a wild, crazy girl at all. She's almost in slow motion if she tries putting her paws up on you or if she goes to lay down for her belly to be rubbed. I'm not sure if she's ever been in a house before, so if all this is new to her, she's taking it in stride and thinking it's alright. She does not know many commands. She knows her name and learned come so far. We are working on sit, but she is not food motivated. She will require training with her new family. We had an accident the first day, but she hasn't had any accidents while being gated in the kitchen with the resident dog while we're at work. I don't think Mia is the biggest fan of water, but with it being winter I'm not sure how she'll do with a lake. She went spread eagle in my arms when I went to lift her into the tub to give her a bath! Once she was in she just stood there kind of scared, so maybe it's just new to her as well. Her hair is really soft and she doesn't seem to shed quite as much as a retriever. Did I mention she LOVES attention and has the retriever personality of needing you to touch her and give her lots of love?! She likes to follow you around, but she doesn't always have to be in the same room you are.

Mia really likes to look out the door, hoping her forever family will come and take her home. With Mia having such a mellow personality, we think she will be great with kids! She can go to a home with another dog as she gets along great with dogs, but it's not required. She was cat tested and doesn't have much interest in them, so your cat would be safe! I would like to see her go to a home with a fence because I'm not sure if she wandered off with her being a stray and because being in town seems pretty new to her.

The two funniest things I've seen her do so far: 1) She was sitting in the front seat of my car and every time we went under an overpass she would duck! 2)Mia made a huge hop (like a rabbit) at my resident dog where she had to have gone 3 feet in the air to try and get her to play! lol...

We are just getting to know Mia and she's still settling in, so there will be more to come soon.

Wonderful news. Beautiful, gentle Mia was adopted today and I couldn't be happier for her. A very special person has come into her life who has large amounts of love and patience and gentleness and will help Mia (now Maya) discover how wonderful life can be.

She will be having all kinds of new adventures and making lots of new friends...both canine and human. Please wish Maya every happiness in her new life.

Please welcome beautiful Mia (pronounced My-ah) back to RAGOM. She is approximately four years old and first came to RAGOM as a stray, found in Iowa, in early 2012. She was fostered here by RAGOM for about a month and was adopted in February 2012 to a family with children. She has rejoined us because her adoptive family is moving and they are unable to bring her along with them.

Mia is a mix, golden in color for the most part, with some black mixed in on her muzzle and ears. Right now, she is somewhat subdued in her encounters with people, male or female. She presents herself submissively, tail between her legs and head bowed. This is gradually changing as she becomes more comfortable in her new environment. It makes my day when she makes eye contact with me and waves her beautiful Golden tail. However, when we go outside, she becomes a different dog. Head up, tail up and waving, she tears after the grand dog or our other foster dog, trying to engage them in play. I think having another playful dog would be a bonus in her next home, but so would lots of opportunities to have playdates or go to dog parks or doggie day care, so a resident dog will not be required. A fence will be needed to keep her safe and prevent bolting. He recall is not very good at present.

Mia is a very sweet, loving pup and will approach for pets at times, but somewhat timidly. She does not get on beds or furniture and when invited, she turns and walks away. Right now, she naps and sleeps at night on a big dog bed in the living room. She will come in the bedroom at night for some pets, but will not use the bedroom dog beds.

She startles easily and is afraid during thunderstorms. Last night was very stormy and very difficult for her, but she finally found her safe spots and remained there until morning. Today, she hesitated to go out due to the wind. She hid under a porch table until I took her on a lead for a walk around the yard. These behaviors will be worked on here and will need to be continued with her new family......and is partly based upon simply helping this wonderful dog feel safe and confident.

According to her previous owner, Mia got along with children, dogs, and cats. I haven't seen her with cats yet, but she did beautifully with my young grandchildren and the grand dog. She is well-behaved in the house, is fully house trained, and shows no chewing or destructive behaviors. She is a polite eater, takes treats hesitantly but gently, and shows no guarding behavior. She has fee roam in the house and sleeps where she wishes.

Medically, she is in excellent health and on no medications. She is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on all immunizations, and current on heartworm and tick preventatives. She is a bit underweight at 51 pounds and the veterinarian increased her food intake and wants her to gain 5-8 pounds.

Mia will take a little effort to pull her out of her shell, but will be worth every minute....she will be a wonderful family dog for some lucky family. Everyone who meets Mia loves her!

She is a bit shy about being photographed right now and I will try for better pictures with her next update.
