Please welcome beautiful Mia (pronounced My-ah) back to RAGOM. She is approximately four years old and first came to RAGOM as a stray, found in Iowa, in early 2012. She was fostered here by RAGOM for about a month and was adopted in February 2012 to a family with children. She has rejoined us because her adoptive family is moving and they are unable to bring her along with them.
Mia is a mix, golden in color for the most part, with some black mixed in on her muzzle and ears. Right now, she is somewhat subdued in her encounters with people, male or female. She presents herself submissively, tail between her legs and head bowed. This is gradually changing as she becomes more comfortable in her new environment. It makes my day when she makes eye contact with me and waves her beautiful Golden tail. However, when we go outside, she becomes a different dog. Head up, tail up and waving, she tears after the grand dog or our other foster dog, trying to engage them in play. I think having another playful dog would be a bonus in her next home, but so would lots of opportunities to have playdates or go to dog parks or doggie day care, so a resident dog will not be required. A fence will be needed to keep her safe and prevent bolting. He recall is not very good at present.
Mia is a very sweet, loving pup and will approach for pets at times, but somewhat timidly. She does not get on beds or furniture and when invited, she turns and walks away. Right now, she naps and sleeps at night on a big dog bed in the living room. She will come in the bedroom at night for some pets, but will not use the bedroom dog beds.
She startles easily and is afraid during thunderstorms. Last night was very stormy and very difficult for her, but she finally found her safe spots and remained there until morning. Today, she hesitated to go out due to the wind. She hid under a porch table until I took her on a lead for a walk around the yard. These behaviors will be worked on here and will need to be continued with her new family......and is partly based upon simply helping this wonderful dog feel safe and confident.
According to her previous owner, Mia got along with children, dogs, and cats. I haven't seen her with cats yet, but she did beautifully with my young grandchildren and the grand dog. She is well-behaved in the house, is fully house trained, and shows no chewing or destructive behaviors. She is a polite eater, takes treats hesitantly but gently, and shows no guarding behavior. She has fee roam in the house and sleeps where she wishes.
Medically, she is in excellent health and on no medications. She is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on all immunizations, and current on heartworm and tick preventatives. She is a bit underweight at 51 pounds and the veterinarian increased her food intake and wants her to gain 5-8 pounds.
Mia will take a little effort to pull her out of her shell, but will be worth every minute....she will be a wonderful family dog for some lucky family. Everyone who meets Mia loves her!
She is a bit shy about being photographed right now and I will try for better pictures with her next update.
