Hi, RAGOM! Meet Micky!

Let’s start with some background on Micky. He is a 5-year-old Chocolate Lab that comes to RAGOM as an honorary Golden from a breeder down south. He came to RAGOM with other dogs (Golden Retrievers and another Chocolate Lab). Coming from a breeder, he has a lot to learn, but is proving to be adaptable and is quickly learning what it means to be a dog! He had a very long trip up to our foster home, over 12 hours in the car, but he was a happy camper when he arrived and his tail has not stopped wagging since!

Here is Micky riding in the car for his long journey to his foster home!

We have learned a lot about Micky since he arrived in our foster home. We will start with his health. He is slightly overweight. Micky weighed in at 75.6 pounds, and the vet would like to see him below 70; however, his ideal weight is 60-65 pounds. We are working on his weight, and he gets daily walks, which is helping. He was brought up to date on all of his shots, and all of his tests came back negative, which was great! He does have a double ear infection, which he is being treated for; his treatment will be done in 10 days. The vet said his canines are worn down, and he is missing 2 teeth, which the vet thought he had been missing his whole life, so no concerns about either of those things. He was neutered earlier this week, so he is recovering from that now. He received lots of love at the vet and his neuter appointment because he will lay on the floor and look up at you with his puppy eyes!

Moving on from health, Micky absolutely loves being outside. He loves going for walks or playing outside in the backyard. He does not wonder far from his humans, so a fence is not required; however, he enjoys wondering around and being free from a leash when he can be. Additionally, he enjoys being with other dogs and is quite a social pup!

Micky seems to be potty-trained, he will wait by the door for you to open it. He is allowed outside multiple times during the day which has allowed him to be successful. He will also go into a crate if treats are used or he is encouraged into it, but prefers to be outside of the crate when possible. There are times we have had to place him in his crate, but he does not fuss once in his kennel. He is crated for about 4 hours at a time right now, as one of us comes home from work over lunch to let the dogs out. Micky is always very excited to see his humans when they come home. He has quickly learned the joys of toys and has attached himself to an oversized tennis ball. It goes everywhere with him if he can take it. Additionally, he is learning to play tug-of-war and chase with our resident dog.

Micky playing with our resident dog!

Micky is gaining confidence every day, but he learns a lot from our resident dog. Because he is still unsure how to be a dog, he needs to go to a home with another large-breed dog who can continue to teach him the joys of being a pup. He also has some skittish tendencies that he will need to continue to work on. He will not do stairs. We continue to work with him, and he will climb up stairs on his own occasionally, but he is not sure how to go down them. He definitely seems more comfortable when stairs are not around. He is also uncertain about carpet and finds comfort on our hardwood floors. He is getting better every day and will walk onto the carpet now, but it will take him some time in a new environment. Additionally, in new places, he will tend to stick close to a wall and cower low to the ground for safety. If you walk up to pet him and surprise him, he often drops down to the ground. Finally, he is very uncertain about cars. He will lay flat and refuse to get into the car and will pull away from the car if possible. We have been lifting him into our car, and once in, he loves it and will jump out on his own. He pants a lot when he is nervous, but he seems willing to try things as he is learning to live in our home.

Micky has learned that plush toys are full of stuffing and has a knack for spreading that stuffing all over our home when he has the chance. Micky does great with hard toys. We are working with Micky on some basic commands, but he will need to continue that training in his new home. We are also working on Micky’s name with him, and he is becoming more responsive when we call for him.

Overall, Micky does not have the typical energy of a young/puppy Lab. He will walk around with his humans or follow our resident dog, but he usually lays in the house and watches us. He likes to be close to his people, but is very laid-back. He will be a great family dog as he continues to develop his confidence and trust humans. He is eager to meet new people and his tail is always wagging. He does great around kids. He is eager to find his perfect family and continue to gain confidence and bond with his forever family!

He is currently available for adoption; contact the Application team if you are interested in meeting him!

Updates

Hi, RAGOM!

Micky has continued his enjoyment of living inside the home. Since the weather has warmed up, he has enjoyed several bonfires outside with us. Micky and our resident dogs (RDs) enjoy watching the fire from the deck so they can observe everything going on.

Micky has also learned how to play with the toys and frequently enjoys playing tug-o-war with our youngest RD at home. The two could play together for hours!

Along with all the playing, comes a very tired dog. When he has the chance to sneak away from our RDs, he is often found sleeping on a dog bed in our house. This past week, he even was willing to share his bed with our RD, who always has to sleep by another dog.

One new development with Micky is that he no longer wants to be in his kennel. He would much prefer to be able to free-roam. We tried putting him in a larger open area, but he proceeded to jump out so he could have free roam in the house. We have not had any accidents or issues with him having free roam in our home since allowing him to be left alone. He has been out for full work days without any issues, so we feel he would do better in a home where he can have free roam throughout the day and avoid being put in a kennel.

Micky gets to go on special outings with his foster mom, and last week, he was able to join the excitement at the RAGOM offices to welcome the new Turkish dogs! He found a nice bed and a plush toy in the office and enjoyed watching everything. He LOVED all the pets and people paying attention to him! He did great with all the people as well as the dogs.

Micky is still looking for his forever home! Please email applicationatragom [dot] org if you are looking for a laid-back dog who enjoys his people to add to your home!

Hi, RAGOM fans!

We have had a busy couple of weeks! Here’s a quick update on Micky:

Micky has made incredible progress: he does all the stairs in our home without a problem now. Micky has started to do the stairs on his own and does not require one of our resident dogs to be with him; however, he does like to take a stuffed animal with him.

Last weekend, we had a fellow RAGOM foster over, Allie. She is the other Chocolate Lab available. We had a great play date and everyone was tired out at the end of it.

Micky is on the left. Allie has the purple collar.

After a weekend of playing outside, a cold snap hit, and Micky experienced snow for what we believe to be his first time. He was not quite sure how to navigate the slippery stairs and patio at first, but he figured it out. When he came in, he did not know to shake the snow off…

Micky is learning that the car can be a fun and rewarding place, and is getting better about getting in on his own. We have brought Micky fun places in the car and capped off the weekend with a trip up to Dairy Queen for pup cups.

In addition to learning the stairs and that the car is a great place, he has learned from his foster brothers how fun it is to be outside and where to lay in the house.

Micky is the middle dog!

Micky is on the right!

Overall, Micky has done a great job adapting to his new life inside the home. He loves the company of another dog and continues to gain confidence every day. He will truly make an amazing addition to any family!

Hi, RAGOM!

Micky has been with us for about 2 weeks now, and the progress he has made has been remarkable! We are learning he is a very adaptable dog and is loving his new life as a house dog! In the past week, he has decided that the dog bed is much more comfortable than the floor…

He has also learned that stairs are not so scary and will go up and down steps. He still has hesitation when it comes to going down stairs from carpet to hardwoods below, but we are continuing to work on that!

He is enjoying going on walks in the afternoon. We have been doing 1-2 miles every couple days. He does not need a lot of exercise, but as he is losing more weight, he is enjoying being out of the fenced-in yard. He is also learning how to play fetch; however, since he recently learned what a tennis ball is, we are working on getting him to give the tennis ball back. Usually, after a walk or wandering around the backyard, it is time for a nap! He is still looking to our resident dog for direction and will lay close to him.

Micky is still very unsure about the car and will not willingly go into the car on his own. We usually have to lift him in or coax him in with treats and our resident dog in the car. Once he is in the car, he is a happy camper.

We went to the meet-and-greet in Edina last weekend, and Micky LOVED meeting all the people, dogs, and kids! He preferred to be standing with another dog, but he happily accepted pets from everyone who stopped by. He enjoyed the kids who walked up to them and was very patient and careful around them. After meeting people for about 1.5 hours, he was tired out and took a nap in the middle of the room! It was great to see he is comfortable anywhere!

Micky is officially recovered from his neuter surgery and enjoying the freedom from his cone. He is able to be adopted and is looking for his forever home! Are you looking for a great, loyal dog to join your family? We know he will bring his forever family lots of love, laughs, and joy for years to come!
