Moose (Budder 05-318)

Profile

11/7/05: Budder is doing beautifully. He isn't showing any signs of separation anxiety from his best buddy, Ben.

We have been lavishing him with attention and he loves it. For a dog that has had an entire farm to roam around on, I think he is adjusting to the "soft life" of being inside very quickly. He has his own soft pillow-bed to lie on in a nice cozy area. We have no other pets so he didn't have anyone else's life to adjust to except ours. He still has a nice sized fenced yard when he needs to tear around.

We took him to the vet today. He had some leftover staples that were removed. He is now UTD with everything he needs, including the microchip. After that, he had a bath and his nails trimmed. Now he's squeaky clean.

One concern is that he does have some skin allergies. The vet called it "elephant skin" in one of the areas but just said to watch how much he was licking & scratching. The bath lady was much more concerned about it. She used a special shampoo on him. She said that the allergies would only get worse and suggested that I call the vet back which I did. He did say that I could start with Benedryl first to see if that would make a difference. We'll probably pick some up tomorrow.

Sadly, Moose (fka Budder) crossed the Rainbow Bridge a couple of weeks ago after a 6 month battle with cancer. He responded quite well to chemotherapy this summer and was diagnosed as cancer-free at the end of August. Unfortunately, the cancer came back with a vengeance and he got very sick in 6 short weeks.

He will be missed greatly - he was an awesome dog and a great companion. I'm thankful to have gotten 7 wonderful years with him.

Budd has continued to do well. One thing about him is that he still is very easily startled or afraid of some things--flashlights, cameras, some noises (not necessarily loud ones). He doesn't appear to be crushed by being reprimanded for doing something he shouldn't have done.

He loves his walks and will usually nudge the leash on the way by to go out in the yard where he doesn't need it. He puts his nose right through the loop when he knows that we are going out for a walk. We usually give him two walks a day unless it's raining.

Two days ago he only got one walk so I left him in the yard on his own this time, a little longer than I normally would (it was a scant 15 minutes) and I caught him trying to dig under our chain link fence by one of the gates. There was something out by the street that he was interested in so he found a space between the hexagonal concrete blocks that were still there from the last dog I owned. I guess that I won't be doing that again. There's no doubt that he would find a way out given enough time.

He has his very own red rubber ball that he likes much better than the tennis balls that we were using. It works much better since it doesn't hold the dirt or get saturated & lose it's bounce like tennis balls do. He likes to tease me with it before he gives it back. He will drop it between his paws, then grab it just before I can get it. When he's finally ready to chase it again, he'll give it up.

For a dog his age, 1 1/2 years, he is very mellow. He does get excited when meeting other dogs, but it's more because he wants to play. I've never seen him go into fighting mode. We have had him for 3 weeks now and I've never seen him bare his teeth or growl. He hasn't had a lot of exposure to other dogs but what I have seen has been acceptable behavior. I believe that he would do very well with another doggy playmate since that's what he was used to. He would get more high speed exercise that way too, since he loves to run at top speed. I'm not so sure that I could say that about cats since he will chase squirrels or rabbits.

We do not allow him to get on the furniture nor has he attempted to get on anything. The only thing that he has chewed up so far is an attachment on our shop-vacuum. I had overslept one morning and I suppose he thought he should be getting attention sooner.

He'll be a good dog for the right family.
