Please welcome amazing Rocky to RAGOM. He is a 4-year-old Black Lab/Retriever mix with a gorgeous, shiny black coat, pearly white teeth, a big smile, and a constantly waving tail. Rocky came to us from Kentucky and we know little about him other than he spent most of his time in a 10'-by-10' pen. He is amazing because despite living under these unhappy conditions, he still emerged as the sweetest, most loving pup you can imagine. He is very social and seems so joyful at meeting everybody who encounters him. He loves both children and adults and definitely loves cuddling.

He weighs 61 pounds and is very healthy except for mild infections in his ears and eyes, both of which are being treated with drops from the veterinarian. He is recently neutered and up-to-date on all immunizations and current with preventatives for heartworm and fleas/ticks.

Rocky is housebroken and had only 2 accidents in his first days in foster care. Rocky will kennel nicely as long as it is done in a very calm and positive manner. He is also slowly being introduced to free roam. The first step was baby-gating the kitchen and leaving him alone there for a short period, and the second step was leaving him alone for 2 hours with free access to the kitchen area and living room. Both times were successful.

Rocky loves to play outdoors with squeaky tennis balls and all sort of dog toys. Stuffed toys are not a good idea....he immediately destuffs them. When you toss him a toy, he will tear around the fenced yard, sometimes several times, before you see him again.

He needs to be looked upon, in many ways, as a puppy with puppy behaviors, despite being four years old. He is not being naughty....he simply was never taught. His forever home will need to gently guide him and teach him indoor and outdoor acceptable behaviors and living-with-people skills. Right now, he can do "sit" and "shake" and is working on "stay." He is very bright and will learn quickly. He enjoys car rides, enjoys almost everything....except taking a bath and getting his ears checked!

He will have to be watched carefully because he likes to run and if he sees an open door or fence, he is going to run, mainly for the pure joy of running free.

Since leashes are new to him, taking walks using a Gentle Leader seems to be best for now. He would make an excellent walking or jogging companion.

Sweet-natured and handsome Rocky is continuing his happy adjustment to indoor living with all its comforts and conveniences. He loves being indoors and cozy and warm...though that has inadvertently triggered a late shedding period which hopefully will be finished very soon. His coat remains in beautiful condition, healthy and shiny. He especially enjoys having his meals on a regular schedule and has an accurate inner alarm as to when breakfast and dinner are due. He is polite about letting you know when it is time to eat. He eats neatly and at a moderate pace.....no inhaling or gulping his food. Treats are huge in Rocky's new life, and he sits nicely for them, wriggling head to toe in anticipation of something yummy.

Rocky is making good strides in the manners department. We work steadily on discouraging his jumping and I rarely see it anymore...but it is still a work in progress. There has been one counter surfing incident in which he snagged a packet of salami, was quickly discovered, and he immediately released his untasted contraband without a murmur. There have been no food guarding behaviors with adults, children, or visiting dogs.

He is fully house-trained and is learning the best ways to let us know he needs to go outside. His current favorites are standing at the back door, or pacing and giving us "the look."

Rocky knows his name and has excellent recall, but that has only been tested within a fenced-in yard. Testing his recall unleashed and unfenced is not recommended at this stage. Though to his credit, the one time he slipped through a gate (my fault) and decided to do a little exploring on his own, he found his way back within 10-15 minutes...... to a much relieved and frantic foster mom. And that was when he was here less than 48 hours.

An interesting fact or two about Rocky that hasn't been mentioned yet is that he has webbed feet and a highly developed tracking nose. That nose probably played a key role in his quick return.

In regard to other dogs, Rocky's dislike seems to be restricted to males. Female dogs have not been a problem and he has had lots of interactions with them. He doesn't play yet with them, but does tolerate them and eats side-by-side with no problems. The only scuffle we had was over a toy and it was quickly and safely resolved. So while it is not mandatory, Rocky might benefit from having another dog in his forever family, especially if he is left home for a full workday. He is trustworthy with free roam in the house and when you return, he is full of joy and performs a special doggie tap dance for you.

If we needed one phrase to describe Rocky, it would be people lover! Everyone he meets is his instant friend and a new source of pets and belly rubs. Everyone who comes through the door is greeted with immediate love. There still is no barking when the doorbell rings....just a happy squirming pup anticipating his newest friend. Which of course disqualifies him as a watchdog for those who might be looking for one.

More than anything, Rocky needs to be indoors and with his people. He is allowed on the couch and sleeps on the bed. He loves being cuddled and petted and being told what a wonderful dog he is and that he is now forever safe. Once a RAGOM dog, always a RAGOM dog. At times, he will just lean back and drink in every word you say and his expressive eyes show the love and contentment he feels. He is a very, very special Honorary Golden and we are so happy RAGOM brought him into our lives.

Rocky has been very busy dividing his time between two households, one in Eden Prairie and one in Centerville. Rocky is thriving in both locations with the added bonus that we get to observe him in different living situations and see how he adapts to each.

He has displayed no problems in transitioning between the two homes. One home is very active and includes a six-year-old who adores Rocky and two adult Golden Retrievers. His other home is quieter with a retired foster mom and occasional visiting grandchildren and pups, and where he gets to be king of his domain and enjoys undivided attention. Rocky is happy and well-adjusted in both homes.

More than anything, Rocky is a people lover, wanting to be with his people at all times and to be held, petted, and cuddled as much as possible. If he could pull it off, he would love to be a lapdog.

As he spends time with all his humans, his manners are improving. He no longer jumps as much as when he first joined us, and there is much less counter-surfing. He is happy in both a fenced yard and on a supervised tie-out. He strives to keep both properties free of squirrels....this is very important to him and almost the only time we hear him bark. He is indifferent to doorbells right now, but that might change as he adjusts to indoor living.

Rocky can be a bit snarky meeting new dogs, so introductions must be done with lots of positive reinforcement and adult supervision. This has been very successful.

He loves going for car rides, but has decided the backseat is too far from his people and does his best to join them in the front seats. So for now, tethering is necessary to keep everyone safe.

He is energetic and LOVES going for walks. He will be a wonderful walking companion.

Rocky is ready for his forever home......he is young, healthy, happy, and blessed with a gentle soul at his core, brimming over with love to offer to his adopters. Please give this beautiful Black Lab mix the opportunity for his Golden life.

A big thank you to Cynthia Erickson of Wing Foot Farms for the paw icon on Rocky's webpage. We appreciate your support and Rocky sends lots of puppy kisses.
