Roscoe 11-325

Profile

Roscoe is here and is ready to start learning what it is like to be a RAGOM golden!  A HUGE GOLDEN thank you to Karen for contacting RAGOM and getting him on to the good life.

He has the basics down; he's red, he's loving, his tail never stops wagging,  he loves other dogs, he loves to cuddle, he's housebroken... But he needs to start learning beyond the basics; it's not OK to hump, how to walk on a leash, how to sit...

I've only had Roscoe for a couple days now but I can tell you that he is just a big lug of love.  He weighed in at 94 healthy pounds.  He does have bilateral ear infections and possibly some skin issues that we're hoping will resolve on a good diet of grain free food.

Roscoe is a total love bug.  He wants to be near me all the time, and his tail wags so hard that he almost knocks himself over.  He gets so excited when you're petting him that he literally folds in on himself so you can pet his head and his bum at the same time.  He has the best happy butt wiggle I've seen in a long time.

Roscoe is very strong and has some manners to learn while leash walking.  We'll be working on the gentle leader this week since it's impossible to walk 4 dogs if one can't toe the line with the rest.  He seems to have quite a bit of energy but it's hard to determine if he will be a high energy dog or if he's still just a bit nervous.

Roscoe is neutered, but only recently so he still has the humping tendency.  He responds well to "off" and "no" and he is learning doggy language quite well.  When he was first introduced to my dogs and buried his nose in their private areas, he didn't back off when the lip was raised and the growl emitted so we let my resident dogs "snap" at him so he would get the picture a little better and he didn't need a nip to learn that the raised lip and the growl is a good indication he needs to move on :)

He's now met 9 dogs since coming into RAGOM!  He met my 3, the neighborhood pipsqueak and then he got to go to another RAGOM home where he was able to meet Hope and the 4 resident dogs there and he did fantastic with all the meet and greets.  I can honestly and truly say that he has loved every dog he's met, big and small.  He has initiated play with my Millie and learned to stop when she was done.

Roscoe is a talker and loves to let you know what's on his mind.  If he feels you're not the center of his attention he will talk to you and remind you that he is still here.  If he needs to go potty and you're not paying attention he will talk to you and make sure you understand that it's time to go!

He LOVES cuddling with you on the couch and he jumped right into bed with me but, unfortunately for him, he needed to be kenneled so everyone could have a good sleep and have their own space.  I do this with all my new fosters until everyone learns that we're going to be harmonious.  He was a little whiny for the first few minutes but he soon realized that he was in there for the night and went to sleep.  He was sure happy to jump into bed for a quick cuddle in the morning though before we went outside!

This dog is absolutely fantastic and with a little work he will be a long-time dedicated companion.

What he needs in his furever home:
* Will do fine with or without another dog.  If there is another dog it is one that must be playful
* Does not need a fence but would love one
* Has been mildly interested in the cat, but has not tried to eat him :)
* No young kids.  His happy but almost knocks humans over, he would knock a little kid down in his exuberence.
* MUST have a family dedicated to obedience training & socialization
* MUST have a family that will take him for daily walks

Roscoe would make a fantastic first dog for a family and would also be a good addition to any other family.  He's just a few walks short of perfect!  If you would like to know more or meet this love bug, please let your placement coordinator know!

Waiting for my FURever family!

Rest in peace, Roscoe
6/23/2006 - 4/14/2017

It seemed like he slowed down a little this winter, but still was going strong, for a dog that was going on eleven. Last Friday, April 14, I took him into see the Dr. because he wasn’t eating and was having trouble moving his back legs. This had only come on two days before. I dropped him off and went to work. She called to tell me that his kidneys were in trouble and wasn’t sure if he would make it. We hoped and prayed for him, that he would pull out of whatever this was that had changed his health so quickly. We were afraid that we may have to make that terrible decision that no one wants to make. But while the Dr. was working with him, his heart just stopped. Our dear darling Roscoe T. Roni, took the decision out of our hands. This did not make losing Roscoe any easier, but it is just like him to want to make our life simpler, just like when he worried when I was sick last year, and how he took care of me when I fell and broke my legs. He was the most gentle, loving dog in the world. Last summer he met a tiny baby, and he very gently kissed her hands and feet and then brought her one of his toys to play with. He loved his stuffed toys, but he wanted to share with the baby. That is just the kind of dog that Roscoe was. We’ve loved him from the day we met him, and he has brought us joy every day of our lives, and sadness now that he is no longer with us. We do have faith that we will see him again someday, waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge.

Until then, we love you Roscoe,

Mom (Karen), Dad (Rob), and your feline sister, Iris

Dear Happy Endings,

My mom has been so busy and hasn’t written for a long time.  I will try to keep her in line in the future.  Two years have gone by.  They have been busy, fun filled years.  I just turned 10 on June 23. Like always I get a cake, and special presents, I have not outgrown my love for stuffed toys.  This year I got Leo the Leopard, and Paul the Platypus. This first picture is of my cake and my presents, before I got to them.  Have I told you I am very spoiled by my parents?  I am.

The next photo is of me getting the last speck of that cake, it was delicious! Almost as good as the ones my mom has baked for me.

My mom got a new car last year, and it still has seats that fold down, just so she can take me places.  In the summer, we take Grandma for a ride and always end up at the Dairy Queen. Mom and grandma get a small cone and I get a pup cup.  Grandma can never eat her whole cone, so she always adds some her ice cream, to my cup.  In May of this year, my grandma died, I am not sure if people go to over the Rainbow Bridge, but I think they do.  She will see all of her pets and all of her people that went before her.  I miss having her next door to me.  I did get to go see her at the Care Center when she was sick, and I tried to get right into the bed with her. I know she was happy to see me. Who wouldn’t be, I am so handsome, or at least that is what mom tells me.

The squirrels are busy in the trees, especially the red ones, they make so much noise, and I still try and chase them, but haven’t caught one yet.  I have dug a hole in the back yard right behind the garage.  I lay in it to keep cool, and I can see all of my back yard from there.  Right over my head, under a balcony the Phoebes’ have built a nest. They fly in and out right over my head and neither of us seems to be disturbed by the other.  I can also watch the neighbor dogs who patrol the fence between me and them, and watch the squirrels and chipmunks.   My good friend Dirk, who was a black lab that lived two doors away also went over the Rainbow Bridge last year.  He was the best dog in the world, he loved everyone, and was so gentle. The whole neighborhood misses Dirk.

Now when my parents travel, I get to stay at home, and my Great-Nephew stays with me and takes care of me.  He is a lot of fun, and really nice to me.  Soon, my mom and dad will be gone for a week, and I will get to live it up with my nephew. Mom says it will be like a bachelor pad with the two of us.  Of course, my feline sister Iris will try and keep us in line. She just doesn’t get us “boys”.  We will have a good time, and when they come back, I am certain that they will bring back a souvenir from their trip for me.  I always get something from their trips, when they went on a Caribbean Cruise a year and half ago, I got a stuffed, seahorse named Salty.  All of my toy have names, and mom remembers them all.  I am not supposed to take my toys outside, but I try just about every day, I bring one to the door, and then I get told that the toy stays in.  I behave and drop it, but I still keep trying.  I did manage to get one outside when my nephew stayed with me last time. But I heard mom telling him to keep an eye on me in the future, so my guess is he will be on to me.

Here is a picture of me that I especially like, I am lounging on the living room floor.  I do this so that I can keep track of where everyone is at all times, because they need to step over me. They may decide to go somewhere without me, so this doesn’t give them a chance.

This past December my mom got sick, and I was really worried about her. In my entire life, I have never touched the Christmas tree or any of the ornaments. This year, the vet thinks, due to my stress over my mom’s health, I ate ribbon off from the tree twice. Mom was very concerned, and I was OK, but had a bad tummy for a few days.  The ribbon was removed, and I was not scolded, but I sure didn’t feel very well. So take it from Roscoe, don’t eat Christmas decorations. Stress eating is just not good for you!   Just sit quietly at the side of the person you are concerned about, and give them a few Golden kisses.  You will both feel better.  I will leave you with this photo of me rolling in the leaves in my back yard.  With a GIANT SMILE on my face.  This is a dog’s life and I am so happy in my forever home!  Thank You RAGOM!

Love and kisses,

Roscoe

Dear Happy Endings,

It’s me Roscoe, and it has been over a year since we have written to you. Last year we had a terrible storm, just before my birthday, and we had no power.  My mom couldn’t bake me a cake, but she did buy me one and we had to celebrate by the lights provided by the generator.   Of course, I got another new stuffed toy, I love my toys, and I play nice with them, and never chew them up.

Later in the summer,  when my parents were gone for a few days, some baby raccoons showed up in our back yard, because I wasn’t there, I think their mom thought it was a safe place to live.  We have a lot of trees to climb, and they found a great woodpile to live in.  When mom and dad got home, we discovered them, and I went crazy barking at them, I thought they looked about the size of my sister Iris, so I wanted to play with them.  I barked a lot at them, and encouraged them to come over the fence to play, but they wouldn’t, they were sure cute.  It took a day or two, but mama raccoon, finally moved them somewhere else, so they couldn’t be stalked by a big red dog.

ME AND MOM IN ROSCOE, MN

Last fall, we went on a trip to Roscoe, Minnesota   (who would imagine that they would name a town after me).  My mom and I got out of the car fast enough to get my picture taken by the Roscoe sign.  It was a fun adventure, but anything I do with my mom and dad is fun.

Also last fall we went to the RAGOM picnic.  I had such fun, I got to see my foster mom. I don’t think I recognized her, but I was with her such a short time, she didn’t think I would remember her, and I didn’t hurt her feelings by not knowing her. I also got to meet the lady that transported me to my foster moms house, of course I didn’t know her either, but mom and dad were really happy to meet the lady that helped bring me into their lives.  At the picnic, I got my picture taken with Santa.

ON MY NEW SOFA!! THIS IS THE LIFE!!

During this long winter, we got some new furniture, this picture of me on my new couch, with the blanket over me. This is how I stay warm in the winter.  My mom sits right next to me, and snuggles under the blanket with me, it is warm and comfy.  Iris (my sister),   will sit on her lap on the blanket.  My mom and dad went away for a long weekend in February, and I stayed at Grandmas house, next door.  There was so much snow piled up on her deck we that we ouldn’t get the door open, so I had to go out the front door, on a tie out.  I’ve never had to do that before, and I behaved myself, but I couldn’t get very far away.  I was really happy when the snow finally melted.  They went on another vacation just a couple of weeks ago, and things were back to normal, I could go out in Grandma’s big back yard.  It was a fun week!

Speaking of the yard, the chipmunks are back. I chase them all over my back yard, and then they run to grandma’s yard. This year they have little chipmunk babies.  The babies are very cute, but they drive me crazy, and they run really fast.  I haven’t   been able to catch one yet, and I don’t know what I would do with one, if I did. But it is sure fun trying.

My cake and presents! Wow!!

June 23 was my 8th birthday, this is the third birthday I have had in my FUREVER home.  This year, my mom baked me a pumpkin cake with and cream cheese and pumpkin frosting.  I shared with my friend Sammy, who lives across the street.  My friend Dirk, the black lab wasn’t home, so I will have to share some of my other treats with him another time.  Dirk comes around a lot, and my mom usually gives him a treat anyway.   I got a present with two new stuffed toys, one is a pink and purple hippopotamus, and the other is a Lamb Chop, it is my third Lamb Chop, I have the original white Sharry Lewis Lamb Chop, I have a turquoise Lamb chop, and now a baby blue one.  They are some of my favorite toys.  So my mom couldn’t pass it buy, when she sees the other colors. My mom is so good to me, I love her.  I love my dad too, I even love my feline, sister Iris.  They take great care of me, and spoil me rotten!!!

Love and kisses,

Dear Happy Endings,

It’s me Roscoe (Ragom #11-325), or as my dad calls me Roscoe T Roni.

It has been almost a year since I have written in.  My mom has been busy and I try to remind her that we need to write, but sometimes she gets too busy.  Last time we checked in, I had gone on that big adventure up north (I still don’t like lakes)!

Right after that, I celebrated my birthday, which is June 23.  It’s almost here again (that is a hint, mom and dad).  For my birthday, my mom looked up a special recipe for cakes made for dogs. She made great big cupcakes that had pumpkin, and dog treats baked right in, they were loaded with frosting made of cream cheese and pumpkin.  She made enough that I could share with some of my neighborhood dog friends. I have two neighbor Goldens, Sammy and my cousin Jessie & my best friend Dirk, who is a Black Lab.  They loved my moms baking, and so did I.  I hope she makes me something good again this year.  I have become such a good dog,   I don’t counter-surf, and I mind my manners at all times.  I am the most perfect dog in the world, that’s what my mom tells me.

My mom and dad have taken a couple of vacations, and when they do, I get to stay at my Grandma's house.  She lives right next door, and has big back yard that is all fenced in just like my own yard.  The first time, they left me last summer, I whined a little bit, but then I realized that Grandma had all of my food and toys, and I could go right out her patio door into the big back yard.  This spring, they went away for a week, and I was very well behaved at Grandmas.

Last fall, my mom had an accident, she fell down and broke her right ankle and her left leg. She had to stay at home with me and my feline sister Iris for 7 weeks.  Mom said that I was the best nurse. She had to spend most of her time in bed, with her feet up so the bones could heal. I stayed on the bed with her all day, and would lick her foot that was sticking out of the cast. At first I was afraid of her cast, and the big boot she had to wear on the other foot, but once I learned that she would be home with me every day, I got used to it. The first day, I decided that I needed to go out. Mom had to use a scooter to get to the door to let me out.  It took her a long time to get to the door, and it looked very painful, mom reminded me that I usually don’t go out all day when she and dad are at work, so from that day on, I didn’t bother her to go out until Dad came home from work. My sister, Iris did some nursing too, but you know how cats are, too independent, between you and me, I was definitely the best nurse in the house!

My outdoor time now is spent stalking and chasing chipmunks. They run back and forth between my back yard and grandma’s back yard.  They get on the other side of the fence and drive me crazy.  They run under the decks and stairways.  When I stayed at Grandma's house, they ran under her deck, and I had to go under there to try and catch them. She thought I was stuck under there, but as soon as the chipmunks came out, so did I.  They are so fast, I can spend hours, just staring at the decks and under the staircases waiting for them to come out. So far, I have never caught one! I can be patient though.

I am such a lucky dog.  My parents are so good to me.  I have a good home, and a big back yard, and since I am so well behaved, I have the run of the house!  My parents love me to pieces, and spoil me rotten! They still think that they got the best RAGOM dog in the world, and I know I got the best adopted parents ever!

Talk to you later,

Love Roscoe

p.s. I am sending a couple of pictures of me eating my birthday cupcake!  Only 6 days until my next birthday when I will turn 7 (just a hint, Mom and Dad).

There was a stuffed toy in this bag.
Look how happy I am!

I wasn’t crazy about the candles!

I ate every crumb!

Relaxing on the couch.
It’s a dog’s life!

Dear Happy Endings,

Last week my mom told me that I was going on an adventure.  I didn’t know where I was going, or what I was going to do, but mom and dad seemed to be pretty excited about it.

We got up really early on Saturday morning and the car was all packed with my blankets, and some of my favorite toys, I had my Saggy Baggy Elephant and my Hedgehog and my Kermit the Frog, and a tennis ball.  I could tell mom had packed some of my food and treats.  Mom and dad had suitcases with their clothes in them too. We left the house early and headed north to Duluth (wherever that is).  I slept part of the way, but I also had a lot of fun looking out of the windows at all of the scenery. We took a couple of rest stops along the way, and I could get out and stretch my long legs, and go potty.  As we were leaving Duluth, we stopped at a place called Matilda’s Dog Bakery, I got to go into the store, and mom and dad bought me special treats from her bakery.  They don’t make any people food there, only goodies for dogs. It was a great store! I got some specially baked treats and a pigs ear.

When we left Duluth, we headed up the North Shore, and drove on a highway by a huge lake.  Mom said it was Lake Superior, I have never seen such a big lake before. I did a bit more sleeping and had another rest stop at Schroeder, where my mom’s cousins live. We kept on driving and when we got to Grand Marias, we headed up the Gunflint Trail. That was a long ride to the resort where mom had made reservations.  It is the Gunflint Lodge and they are Very Pet Friendly!  When we got there, I saw a Golden Retriever come out of his dad’s boat and he jumped right into the water.  I don’t think I have ever been swimming, at least not since my mom and dad adopted me. Do I like the water? I don’t know.  We will have to find out this weekend.

We checked in and headed to our cabin, it was right on the lake and there were a couple of big chairs right in front of the cabin facing the lake. In front of the chairs was a giant rock. It looked just like a place for a Golden to sit and watch the world go by.  My mom likes to read, and I hoped that she would take me with her when she went down there.   We did go down there many times and I sat on the rock while mom read.  It was very peaceful and quiet, which is just what mom said she needed.

Here is a picture of me and mom by the lake.

When mom and dad left the cabin for dinner, I got a little scared and started to whine. They came back in and told me that they were just going to dinner and would be back, and that I shouldn’t worry and be upset. I did have a birds eye view of lake from the couch in the cabin.  They took me on long walks by the lake and tried to get me to go into the lake. I wanted nothing to do with swimming. I would not go in the water and even get my  little toes wet.  Mom and Dad tried to take me out on a boat ride on Monday, I refused to get in the boat and I flattened myself down on the dock and wouldn’t move until dad said I could go back to the cabin. Maybe if they take me to another lake sometime, I will be brave enough to try it. We’ll see.

I liked walking out on the big docks and looking at the lake.  Lots of times there were ducks around and I really wanted to chase them, but dad wouldn’t let me.  Here I am sitting on the couch in the cabin looking at the lake.

On the way home from the cabin, we stopped back in Duluth at a store called Duluth Pack, and it was another store that was dog friendly, I got to go in and try on a new collar. I really lucked out I got a new collar, leash, and a new stuffed moose. My mom and dad spoil me rotten.

I mostly enjoyed my adventure, sometimes at night there were strange sounds and smells of what I’m sure were wild animals.  I kept a good watch and protected my parents and slept right along side of their bed. A couple of times I had to bark in the middle of the night to warn them that there was something scary outside. I think at first they though I was being naughty, but they soon realized I was only trying to protect them.

I was happy to get home on Tuesday and see my feline sister Iris.  After my big adventure, I was really tired when I got home and did a lot of serious sleeping!! This picture shows me resting on our bed with my giant stuffed bone. It is one of my favorite toys.

I have said it before and I will say it again I have hit the JACKPOT with my FURREVER HOME.  We are one big happy family!  My parents think they are the lucky ones, but I know better.

One last photo of me on my living room floor, I am so photogenic!

p.s. I have stopped counter surfing and taking food off the table (most of the time).  I am such a good boy!

Dear Happy Endings,

I let my mom send in the pictures and she forgot to send one in that we really like. This picture is of me on the couch, when I hear my mom and dad coming down the street, I have a great view of the neighborhood from here.

A lot has happened since I have written into Happy Endings. We had a big Thanksgiving dinner at our house with all of our family. I enjoyed being with everyone, and they all love me, but I was kind of naughty. When mom was putting the dinner rolls on the table, I grabbed the bag right out of her hands and ate four parkerhouse rolls. I did get scolded, but the rest of the family saw me, and it is pretty tough to get to mad at such a handsome face. Later on that day, I took a block of blue cheese off from the kitchen counter and then mom was pretty worried, that I would get sick. I needed to make a lot of trips outside on Friday! Mom and Dad weren’t familiar with a counter/table surfer until they met me!

I also have found out that my mom’s home made Danish puff pastry, is really good, even though I wasn’t supposed to be eating it. I only took one piece off from that pretty platter, during a party we had. We had another big party before Christmas with some friends that I had never met before. They all loved me, and thought I was handsome and well behaved. I did however get one piece of that “Danish” again that day. I can’t help it that I can’t resist my mom's good cooking. Mom is now really careful in the kitchen when she is preparing food, and I do listen when she tells me no, but she does have to keep her eye on me.

My mom does a lot of Christmas decorating, and I was very helpful, and never got into any mischief. I have left the tree alone, and didn’t bother any of the other decorations around the house. I had a great Christmas, I got presents under the tree, and in my Christmas stocking. New toys, and lots of “dog treats”.

I get along really well with my feline sister Iris, we are pals, she will lay next to me on the couch, and sleeps in bed with me and mom and dad. I am so long and tall, she will walk across the room and walk right under me like I am a bridge. She likes to play with her cat toys and she loves to play with my tennis balls.

My mom and dad tell me that they are so lucky to have found me! They think I am the greatest! I am sending along a few new pictures of me & Iris, and me by my Christmas tree. You will see that I am very happy and healthy, and of course very handsome! I have hit the jackpot with my FUREVER HOME!

Love and kisses, Roscoe

Hi! I’m Roscoe.

I thought I was living the great life with my Foster Mom.  She took good care of me, nursed me through some bad ear infections, and I got to play with her other Golden’s.  I was only there two days when Rob and Karen came to meet me to see if they wanted to adopt me. They seemed pretty nice.  They told my Foster Mom (FM) that they wanted to adopt me, and they didn’t need 24 hours to think about it.  I think they fell head over heels for me, which doesn’t surprise me, since I am such a good boy, well behaved and so good looking.

My new mom, Karen could hardly wait until the next week when they were going to pick me up.  She talked to my FM or emailed her every day just to check on how I was doing. She told my FM that I had a whole basket of toys waiting for me. She called and checked on what kind of food I needed to eat. She asked if I needed a dog bed, or if I would want to sleep in the people bed.  She sure seemed to be interested in me, and my needs. I had a feeling that when I got there, I would be pretty spoiled.

On October 7th, Karen and Rob (mom and dad) picked me up and took me to my FUREVER home. I couldn’t believe it, when we got to my new home, they took me to the back yard which is really big and all fenced in.  Before we even went in the house we walked next door where my grandma lives and I got to meet her.  I don’t think I ever had a grandma before, especially one right next door. She didn’t know that mom and dad were going to adopt me, so I was a big surprise to her too. I am pretty lucky dog!

The first night, I slept on the floor in moms and dads room.  In the middle of the night I made some talking noise, and mom thought I maybe needed to go out.  She took me out (which I didn’t need), when we came back in I jumped up their bed, and slept the night away. Now that is where I always sleep.

I do have to share some of the attention with my feline sister Iris.  Iris hid the whole first day that I was in my new home. But she is also very spoiled and realized that if she didn’t come out, she wouldn’t get any attention from mom and dad. Needless to say, Iris and I are becoming friends. We both sleep with mom and dad (it’s a good thing they have a king sized bed).

I have met my extended family, aunts, cousins, second cousins, and I love them all.  I have met (people) neighbors, and I like them all too.  I know when mom or dad put my gentle leader on, that I am going for a walk on the street, where I frequently meet other neighbor dogs. I even met a cousin, who is a RAGOM dog named Jessie, who lives at the end of my block.  Jessie is very nice, but kind of shy.  I really do a good job of walking in the gentle leader, at first I was a little afraid of it, but now I know it means a walk, so I don’t mind putting it on. Yesterday when mom took me for a walk, she asked me to stop and wait a few times; I got a lot of praise when I did what she told me to do.  So I think she is learning what a smart boy I am.

When I go out in the back yard, I chase balls, and run like the wind from one end of my yard to the other. I go far into the underbrush and get thistles on me, so mom has to brush them out of me, but I don’t care because I love to be brushed and touched. When mom or dad start to pet me, my tail goes ninety miles an hour, and I have the cutest butt wiggle in town. When they first get home from work, I run into the bedroom, jump up on the bed and roll over and over and push my head into the pillows. I get lots of snuggles then.

Mom took me to my new vet last Friday for a re-check of my ears. My Doctor said that my infection was almost gone; I only need medicine in one ear for a few more days.  She also said that my weight is perfect for my height and length. My new Dr.’s were happy to meet me and all of the techs in the clinic told me how handsome I am.  I was a very good boy on the ride to and from, and well behaved in the clinic.  I sat and patiently waited while mom paid the bill.

I don’t know what I have done to deserve such a good home, but whatever it is I am thankful. My parents love me to pieces, my sister cat is liking me more and more every day.  My parents think I am the greatest dog in the world, and I try really hard to be that.

I am sending a few photos now, and will send some later with me and my sister Iris.  I just want to thank RAGOM for all the work they do to help lucky Golden’s like me find their FUREVER homes.

Love,

How lucky can a dog get?  Roscoe hit the FUREVER Jackpot!  Karen and Rob came to meet him over the weekend and, of course, fell head over heels for this guy!  Who could blame them?!  They saw through the rough knowing a perfect, smart dog was there and were willing to take a chance on Mr. Roscoe!  They won't be sorry, he is such a lovebug and is one very lucky dog.

Thank you to Karen and Rob for working with RAGOM and making Roscoe a part of your very special family!

I LOVE my mom!
