This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Sammy has been with us for a week. Sammy is a purebred, one-year-old, neutered Golden, who also happens to be ridiculously good-looking! Sammy is an absolute sweetheart. As I write this, he has his head on my lap, waiting for a few pets between sentences.

Sammy went to the vet on Friday, and he was so well-behaved. Everyone thought he was quite handsome with such a beautiful coat. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, had a negative fecal test, and weighed 82 lb. The big, brave boy didn't even wince when given his shot or microchipped.

Sammy was very active the first few days in his foster home. We weren't certain that he slept! He has settled in very well, however. He loves to play with our resident dog, Cooper (aka Romeo, 13-157), outside, inside, on top of the bed, in the snow, under the table, in the closet, on the laundry, behind the couch, etc. He is great with other dogs, even little dogs with attitude. Sammy just respectfully backs away and leaves them alone. Although he came from a home with small children and loves them, he should probably go to a forever home with adults or older children.

Sammy is a very loving and gentle dog in spirit, but he can be a bit exuberant and overpowering when excited. When happy to see someone, he jumps up to give a big bear hug! Sometimes he seems like a B-52 coming in for a landing, but all he really wants to do is snuggle!! Since he just turned a year old, his exuberance is understandable.

Like many young dogs, he will need to be mentally stimulated and given the opportunity for lots of exercise. If he doesn’t get this opportunity, he might take it out on some household items. Note to self...buy new reading glasses and new phone charger! His forever home will want to have many appropriate toys for him to play with and will also want to be careful when he is around other dogs with the toys.

Currently, he is not a big fan of the kennel or getting inside the car. He does great once inside the car, however. Currently, he is left alone for a few hours at a time with our resident dog and does just fine.

Fun Facts About Sammy:

  • Completely house-trained, not a single accident
  • Great with other dogs
  • Knows some commands: "sit" and "shake"
  • Loves walks, but needs a Gentle Leader to help guide him easier
  • Has not been cat tested
  • Loves to be outside playing in the snow

Sammy is very food motivated! In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dog finish their kibble in such a short time. He has a slight issue with food guarding that recently developed with the resident dogs. This is easily remedied by giving Sammy his food in a separate area, away from other dogs. Sammy easily sits and waits patiently for any treat. This food motivation will be a real asset to help train and redirect Sammy.

He is wonderful, energetic boy who needs a bit of training to become a truly remarkable dog. If you are interested in meeting Sammy, please contact your Placement Advisor.
