RAGOM fans, please welcome our newest dapper Doodle... Schooner! This dashing boy is a 7-year-old neutered blonde Goldendoodle weighing in at a whopping 75 pounds of pure love! Schooner is current on all vet work and was just recently groomed. I really haven't noticed any shedding in the week he's been here. He may be a middle-aged guy, but Schooner acts like a puppy most of the time. He loves to play Frisbee and chase balls in the yard with our resident dog Duncan, and then come inside a take a nap with our old guy Tucker. He gets along great with both of our dogs, even though they don't always want to play with him! I think he gets enough out of the parallel play chasing in the yard with Duncan to keep him content.

Schooner was surrendered to RAGOM because his family thought he had a great deal of anxiety having to do with their small children. Schooner was very uncomfortable around the youngsters and would go out of his way to get by them.

One day while Schooner was wearing a cone because of a hotspot, one of the kids cornered him, and Schooner nipped at the child. The family made the tough decision to give Schooner a happier and less stressful life with the help of RAGOM, and that's what we intend to do! This sweet boy is working with our Behavior Services Manager, who will be happy to work with Schooner's adoptive family if needed. Schooner was cleared for adoption with the following recommendations:

  1. There should be no children in the home, grandchildren included. Schooner loves to have his people around, so a retired couple or maybe someone that works part-time would be great. Schooner is used to having the run of the house for 7+ hours and does a wonderful job. He hasn't had an accident and gets into absolutely nothing he shouldn't. Schooner really is quite remarkable. We do think that Schooner would love a furry someone to play with and just be with. He would do best with a SUBMISSIVE dog because of his anxiety.
  2. Schooner would be happiest with an active family that includes him in their daily activities. He loves to go on walks, play in the yard, and ride in the car. A fenced yard would be wonderful for Schooner to go out and run in when he needs to blow off some steam. A fence is not a requirement, and it should be known Schooner stays pretty close to his people when outside playing. He comes right away when he's called.
  3. This guy just wants someone to love him as much as he loves them! Schooner is a boy with a BIG heart and lots of love to share. He will make some lucky family very happy!

Here's what I've learned about the Schoon-Dog in the week he's been with us:

  • Schooner is one of the smartest, most obedient dogs we've had in our home. He wants nothing more than to please you and have your affection. He knows how to sit, high-five, speak, lay down, roll over, and come when he's called.
  • He could probably sit or lay by you for hours and look deep into your eyes to show you how much you mean to him.
  • Schooner has shown no resource guarding while eating or chewing on a bone. There also has been no counter-surfing, which he could easily do because of his size. He gets into NOTHING he is not supposed to get into. It really is quite amazing!
  • He needs slow introductions to new dogs on neutral territory. Schooner could feel threatened while meeting another dog while he's on a leash. Schooner met my daughter's Husky at a very stressful time with too many dogs and people around, and they got into it (he wasn't on a leash). I was right there and got them apart right away. Kuda (the Husky) has a very strong personality and is not very well-trained, so after that, we kept the dogs apart for everyone's sake.

Schooner has brought a ton of love and laughter into our home, and I know he would do the same for yours! If you sound like the right family for this hunk of love, please contact your Placement Advisor.

Updates

Tuesday, August 9, 2016

Hello, all! Sorry it's been so long since Schooner's last update; summer has been extremely busy, as I'm sure it is for everyone!

First, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Schooner's fan who donated money for Schooner to have a groom. I must say, we think he looks super handsome with his shorter hair, and I'm sure he is very comfortable in the warm weather. I don't think he really liked being on his own during his appointment, so I went in and helped for a bit to keep him company. Check out the cute pictures below! I tried to show his fancy "duck bill" in the pictures, but that didn't work very well. :(

We're excited and have a feeling good things will be happening for Schooner soon! He continues to do well with the other dogs in our home, but still prefers the smaller dogs and is starting to sleep with them more on either the dog beds or on our bed at times. His long legs make it hard for him to sleep on the bed, so I think he still prefers to lay on one of the dog beds to stretch out a little more. He is getting along great with the bigger dogs, too. Also, Schooner is starting to play with tennis balls and toys in the house, which he never seemed that interested in before. He is such a wonderful boy!

I'll try to be a little more on top of things with his updates. He's a fun guy to write about!

Schooner here! I hope everyone is GRRReat! Summer is flying by, and I can't believe it will soon be the DOG DAYS of August! That should be a great month for me; talk about celebration time!

It's been busy around our house. We have people coming and going, and FM says I've been so good with the people that have been here. I really like men--we had a dinner guest the other day, and I sat nicely with my head on his lap for some scratches, which was great. I still haven't had any contact with young children. The neighbor girls came over the other night, and Foster Mom had me stay inside because the youngest LOVES to give doggy hugs. That would have made me incredibly nervous! FM talked to one of our Placement Advisors the other day, and they decided everyone needed some clarification on me and creatures of the feline kind... I live with two cats right now that are very used to dogs. If either of them comes by me, I will look away or walk away so I don't have to look at them. I would never give them the time of day and try to chase them. They just seem so sneaky! So, a house with a cat might be okay, but one without would be the best. Just know, I don't have a prey drive.

FM says I need a trim pretty soon. My coat is really thick and is starting to get snarly, and she doesn't want her Schooner Boy to be uncomfortable. What a woman! I have to get ready for those DOG DAYS of August, you know!

The pictures are of me and the gang on pizza night. Pizza night is serious business, as you can tell. The humans all share pizza crust with us if we sit nicely... MMMMMM! I have to be on my game and not lose my concentration, even though I think I was saying something funny in one of the pictures!

Talk to you soon!

Love,

Schooner

Schooner has been having a great summer so far. He has had to adapt quite a bit with having another dog move in for a bit, but has handled it like a champ! Whenever he feels like he needs a break, he heads for our bedroom closet to take a snooze. We always joke that he looks like a bear coming out of his den when he exits and slowly stretches. It has been a great place for him to retreat to or nap in to get away from it all.

Schooner is still adjusting to having Kuda the Husky stay with us for a while. Melanie, our behaviorist, has helped reassure me that it takes a while for them to get things figured out. He still will give a low growl when she walks into a room, and they need to be kept apart at feeding time. Neither dog has really had others around in the past while they eat, so a close eye is kept on both when it's feeding or treat time. Schooner does show remorse if he is corrected for growling; we give him a firm "no" and he is then right next to us for a reassuring scratch. He is a sensitive boy.

Schooner does shed quite a bit, which I feel needs to be pointed out because so many people think Doodles do not. He loves to be brushed, which helps maintain his coat. He is due for a good trim and coat-thinning to keep him comfortable. Schooner is one good-looking guy!

Because Schooner loves carrots SO MUCH, we wanted to share a great summer treat that Kuda's mom made for the crew. It's simply carrot juice, mint (to help that dog breath), and a baby carrot to use for the stick of the carrot popsicle. Just use an ice tray or small Dixie cups and freeze. It's a great outside snack on a hot day!

FM is making me take MORE pictures. I just need to grin and bear it!

Helloooooo, everyone! I just thought I'd send a quick update about what I've been doing with my life. The most exciting news is that Skylar and Nate moved back for the summer! Skylar and I love to run and chase each other and play tug with sticks! Boy, is Nate fun to have around, too! He gives me long scratches and plays try-to-catch-me, which is really a fun game. Nate says I'm the best listener he's ever met, maybe even better than Skylar. I knew I was good, but wow, that makes me feel really special! Thanks, "first" mom and dad for the great training!

That's it for now. Have a GRRRReat week!
