Shandy 08-272

Profile

Allow me to introduce Shandy! Shandy is an approximately 3-1/2 year old spayed female hailing from Minnesota. She came to us at RAGOM because she was having issues with the older resident Cocker Spaniel in her home, some jealousy and lunging at the Cocker apparently, but no biting or fighting, thankfully. Shandy is a very pretty girl, she is buff in color and has nice feathering on her tail and legs. However she has one small issue that most women would never complain about - she is TOO skinny! Shandy weighs in around 52 pounds, and is very slight. . .you can feel the spaces between her ribs and the vertebrae on her back. So we are very diligently working to get her to a nice healthy weight! She's eating very well right now, getting some extra treats for meals like Satin Balls and such. She is LOVING it all.

Shandy's current foster home includes two very rambunctious boys who are 6 & 3. They bounce all over the house all day, yelling, crying, crashing toys and none of it really seems to phase her right now. As I type this she is sleeping under my desk, snoring away and my kids are bouncing all over the furniture! Last night she did the sweetest thing ever, I put my 3 y/o to bed and after I left she stayed and slept on his floor until I came to get her to go outside before I went to bed. She was curled up as close as she could get to his bed without being on it! The night before she slept with me, and stayed as close to me as she could all day, but she felt safe enough to stay with him last night. It was very sweet and really made my son's night!

Shandy shares her foster home with our resident cat Bacardi. They had an interesting first meeting because Shandy was sleeping and 'Cardi felt that was a 'safe' time to sniff her out...too bad she startled Shandy! She woke and tried to have her for a snack, but later on 'Cardi showed Shandy who was the Queen in this house! ('Cardi still has claws and knows when to use them!) So far they pretty much ignore each other, but I've been keeping a close eye on them as it was said that Shandy doesn't like cats.

As for other dogs, that's another story. Shandy was surrendered due to the fact she didn't get along with the other older dog in the home. We're not sure of the actual story there, but she's been hit or miss with the other dogs she's been introduced to. On her transport she barely acknowledged the other Golden that was riding with her. But when she came to my house and met the neighbor's lab, she lunged at her. The other neighbors have small dogs and she tried to lunge at them too. Thankfully she was on a leash and there are fences in the way! So, when we go out, she's on the Gentle Leader until we can more safely predict how she will be with other dogs.

That being said, I really believe Shandy would best thrive in a home where she is the only pet. It's too early to say how she will consistently be around cats as when I left her alone I put my cat in her own room so there was no potential for altercations!

Shandy is a GREAT girl....she is very snuggly and loves to be petted. She totally leans into it and gets a great look of doggie joy on her face. She seems to enjoy fetching and walks REALLY well. She stayed beside me and I had my youngest in the stroller and she didn't try to walk in front of it or pull on her leash. She did great! Car rides - she loves them! She laid in the back of my SUV from Fargo to Grand Forks, and we never heard a peep out of her!

Tomorrow is Shandy's trip to the vet to get microchipped and a physical exam done, so be sure to check on her tomorrow! If you are interested in this sweet girl, send placementatragom [dot] org an email and let them know!!

Dear RAGOM,

This morning we bid farewell to our beautiful Shandy girl who has been so much a part of our lives for the past nine and a half years.  She aged gracefully and never lost her smile or her youthful spark even as her eyes clouded and joints stiffened.

Shandy enjoyed camping, fetch, beer, peanuts, ear scratches, and hide and seek.  She especially enjoyed the winter; frolicking in the first snow each year like she'd never seen something so wonderful.  Above everything, she loved her people and her favorite person on Earth was her Grandpa Brian.

Thank you, RAGOM, for the opportunity to adopt, teach, and grow with Shandy.

And, most importantly, thank you Shandy.  I only hope that our love was enough payment for all the lessons you taught us and the happiness you brought to our family.

We miss you already.

Ryan, Abby, Benjamin, and Henry.

Hi Shandy here! I'm writing everyone one last time, as I'm going home with my forever family today! I met them and absolutely fell in love with them, and already have them wrapped around my paws! I'm going to live in Wisconsin, I hear it's pretty nice there!

Thank you to all my fans and my fosters for giving me such a great place to stay. I'll miss those short humans!

Hugs & sloppy kisses,

~Miss Shandy~

I'm so happy to have my FURever home!

Hi! It's me Shandy again! I've been having such a good time here in North Dakota! I love going for walks in the evening and then vegging out on the floor by FM's feet while she watches TV. It's great because she rubs my belly with her feet and I looooooooove that so much.

I am really settling in here well, I'm feeling comfortable enough to really let my personality shine through - I played with FM yesterday and it was so much fun. We played fetch for awhile and then I decided I liked being rubbed on much better. So I sat on her on the floor and wouldn't let her up until my belly was good and scratched!

The one thing I'm not so keen on is that ear stuff! MAN! That's no fun. Twice a day I get these smelly drops put in each one and they make me swallow...it tastes pretty gross. THEN just when I think I"m done, FM says it's bath time for those ears and she washes them out! She says I'm a real good girl though, because even though I move my head a lot, I don't try to run away or growl or bite. She doesn't know it, but the only reason I put up with it so well is because of the ear massages I get afterwards! It feels SO good and really gets my leg a-thumpin'!

Yesterday that little human walked me around and around and around and around and....well you get the idea....he walked me around the yard on my leash. I didn't mind it at all, I figured there had to be something in it for me at the end - sure enough...I got my favorite treat from FM - a peanut butter filled KONG. Yum! She said it was because I put up with him dragging me around so much and trying to give me kisses on the nose.

I'm still a little scared of other dogs. I really don't like it when they bark at me - I'm scared they're going to hurt me - so I bark back to let them know I'm just as tough as they are! But when FM calls me back, I come right away - I'd rather be with my humans anyway. I do have a friend of sorts though- FM is friends with a black lab and she treats me really GReat. We ignore each other for the most part but things are warming up.

I still don't like really loud noises, like construction equipment or things that beep really loudly. They make me want to hide behind FM and get out of there. I haven't run away yet, FM is always reassuring me that everything will be OK. I guess I just need some work on these things and being around other dogs. But if you're patient and willing to work with me, I know I will be a good, brave dog soon.

Did I mention how smart I am? I've got it all figured out that if I plant my butt when I come inside from potty time, that the humans will give me a treat. But really...we know who's got who trained, right?

I'm such a good girl that I've never had an accident in the house, I don't get into the garbage or litter box - FM gives me complete run of the house while she is gone because she knows I'll be a lady and keep my nose clean.

Tomorrow is a big day for me, as my potential forever family is coming to visit me! Isn't that great?! Please wish me lots of luck and that they will be the right furever home for me! I've had a GReat time being a RAGOM dog, but I'd really love a home that is all mine.

More updates tomorrow!!!

Hugs and sloppy kisses!

~Miss Shandy~

Under FM's desk is my favorite safe spot! Good for belly rubs too!

I love to give hugs!

See..the cat & I get along just fine!

Oh yeah, that's the sweet spot, right there!

Shandy here! Foster Mom had a really hectic day so I'd thought I'd give her a break and write my own update today.

You know, she thinks she has it rough but really, did she go to the vet today? No, I did! She didn't get poked and prodded at either, but I'm such a great girl that I sat very nicely through the whole exam. A true lady never reveals her weight, but FM says I have to let you know but now I'm down to 51 pounds. The vet says it'd be nice if I'd gain 10 pounds or so. FM says we're working on that, but I don't mind because I'm getting lots of yummy treats like Satin Balls! I got that micro chip thing too, so now you don't have to worry if I get loose. I really wouldn't run away because I like to stay next to you, but hey, at least if I did go, you'd be able to find me.

The vet also looked in my ears and was sad to see how dirty they were. I guess I had a lot of wax in there because they all held me down and cleaned out my ears... I didn't like that too much because one of them was really sore. Turns out I have an ear infection so now I get drops in my ears and have to clean them more often. Well...ha...FM has to clean them and try to keep me still for it! I prefer to roll around and shake my head! Even though it hurt a bit, I was a patient girl and didn't growl or snap while they did it. I even got a yummy treat when I was done. I'm supposed to go back to get my ears checked in two weeks, but Foster Mom says my forever family will probably have to take me because she doesn't expect me to be here long enough to go again!

I really enjoy just hanging around the house with you and laying next to wherever you may be. I don't jump on you or your furniture, but I love to lay by your feet...and hey...if you wanna rub me with 'em - feel free! I like to sleep beside the bed at night in my nest of blankies and I respect the baby gate that FM uses in the doorway. One of my favorite spots in the house is under the computer desk, I can squeeze under there and even nudge FM's feet to get a rub or two... pretty smart, huh? I'm given free reign while they are gone but FM hasn't left access to the kitchen as of yet. . .maybe tomorrow?!

Bacardi the Cat and I are becoming pretty good friends. For the most part I ignore her and she ignores me, but let me tell you - she is a crazy cat! She chases bugs all over the place and leaps on the sliding doors and quite honestly, her freakiness creeps me out a bit! I am not sure if I should be scared of her, so I just watch and stay on alert - who knows what that cat will jump on next! FM leaves that crazy thing and me together when she has to leave and we've gotten along just fine.

You know, I keep hearing this thing called counter surfing and I have no idea what it means. I do know that if you lay under the kitchen table while those short humans are eating, it's a veritable shower of goodies, especially by that little one! I'm pretty picky about what I'll take, I mean really did they think I'm a monkey? Bananas are NOT my favorite, but keep on dropping the sausage!

I love riding in the car, I like laying down and feeling all the bumps in the road. And I'm patient enough to wait for you to open the door and help me out (hey I am a lady after all) unlike some dogs who'd barrel you over to get out!

I don't really have any favorite toys, but FM says that's just my mellow nature. She gives me a peanut butter filled Kong and that totally makes my day...it's like a big lollipop - I just lick all the peanut butter out, and bring you the empty Kong when I'm done. Refill? Please?

Well FM says it's time for our nightly walk. She says it wears ME out but I really think it's so she can get those short humans to calm down!

I'm really looking forward to meeting my furever family, are you waiting for a calm, sweet girl like me? If so email placementatragom [dot] org and they'll get you headed my way!!

Talk to you again soon!
~ Miss Shandy ~

I know if I sit, there's treats in that drawer!

YUP!! (And they think I'M the trained one!)

Oh no more pictures please!
