I would like to introduce you to Shelby, a beautiful red 6 year-old female PB GR.  Two of her littermates, Lola 16-220 and Lacey 16-224 were also surrendered to RAGOM from a commercial breeder.   They just turned 6 on Oct. 9, 2016 and are now living the Golden life without having more puppies.

Shelby weighs 54 pounds, is now UTD on shots and spayed.  She spent her first two weeks with RAGOM at a temp foster’s home and learned how great life is while living in a house!  Thank you again Ginny for fostering her until I came home.  I was warned when I picked her up that she throws up while riding in the car and she stayed true to the warning.  Now it seems like if another dog is in the car with her, she doesn’t do it.  She came in with ear infections and a yeast infection on her belly between the folds of skin from having puppies.  Shelby met my dogs in the yard with no problem and followed them right through the door into the house.  Many dogs that we get from breeders have never been inside of a house so they are afraid of steps, doorways, and everything in a home.  I think she was brave because of what she learned at Ginny’s house.  Shelby never had an accident in the house and will pace back and forth if she has to go out.  I let the dogs outside on a regular schedule (when they wake up, after they’ve eaten, and before bed) and many times in between.  There are times when I have to use a leash to bring her outside, but then she is OK once she gets into the yard.

Most scared dogs use a crate as their safe spot, but Shelby wouldn’t go into one.  She claimed one of the dog beds in the living room and uses that as her safe spot.  She sleeps there every night and spends a lot of the day there.  If I am sitting on the couch, she likes to lie next to my feet.  She has free roam when I am gone and has never gotten into anything.  Last week she chewed on a nylabone for the first time and starting bringing toys into her bed.   She also started taking treats from my fingers and takes them very gently.  Her trust grows every day!

Shelby goes back to the Vet tomorrow to have her stitches removed and get a booster shot.  She has been on antibiotics for a week, so b oth the ear infections and the yeast infection are cleared up now.  She is ready to find her forever home now.  Fast movements scare her so she should go to a home with children 10 or over.  Young children don’t understand that she needs time to learn to trust people since everything is new to her.  She also needs a physical fence to keep her safe and allow her to go potty without knowing someone is watching her.

If you have a confident resident dog that Shelby could follow and learn from and think that she would be a great match for your family, please contact your placement advisor.  She is a big love bug and will be a great addition to someone’s family!

Updates

Shelby has come a long way since she first came here!  I can’t believe it was so long ago that I sent in an update and I am sorry for being so late with it.

Every day we have a routine in our house and this helps new fosters to adjust quicker because they know what to expect.  As soon as the dogs are done eating in the morning, they all get a treat after my oldest dog gets her daily meds.  Shelby sits by me waiting for the handout.  Then she heads right to the door to go outside to do her business.  The back yard isn’t scary for her anymore so she runs around the yard for a few minutes if it isn’t too cold. I think this was her first experience with being in the snow.

When everyone comes back into the house, it is usually nap time.  Here she is sleeping in between my two dogs keeping warm!  She gets along with all dogs.

Another big step for Shelby is that she loves to cuddle in bed now.  She waits until I am in bed before she jumps up on the bed and lays next to my arm.  Then she slides her nose under my hand so I can pet her.  She doesn’t stir all night and waits until I get up in the morning.

Shelby continues to enjoy shredding paper.  At first I wasn’t sure if the guilty one was her or my youngest dog.  He stayed overnight at a friend’s house one night, so I put a piece of junk mail on my coffee table while I was driving him there and sure enough, it was on the floor when I returned and had all 4 corners torn up!  She’s still a little love bug anyway!

We want to thank Nicole 13-351 for the Holiday Icon and Holiday wishes!!  You must have brought Shelby good luck, because she HAS found her forever home just in time for Christmas!!

We had a family come over this week to meet Shelby.  Their Golden had died recently so they were looking for another dog to keep their other dog company.  Many former breeder dogs are afraid of new people, but not Shelby.  When they walked into the house, Shelby came out of her bed and went right to them and started sniffing the Dad to see who he was!   She went back to her dog bed and he sat on the floor by her.  She stretched her neck to get closer to his hand and eventually she laid her head against him while he petted her.  If he stopped, she nudged his arm to tell him not to stop.  They will be adopting her on Sunday when they get back to town!  Shelby hit the jackpot with this family!

Shelby is a different dog now that her stitches are out and her infections are gone!  I think the stitches were poking her so she just wanted to stay on her dog bed.  The following day she brought every toy and bone into her dog bed, one at a time.  She might have thought they were her babies.  It was so sweet.

Every day Shelby gains more confidence.  She goes outside with my resident dogs without having to be called.  As soon as I say ‘outside’ she follows us to the door.  At first she wanted me to go out with her and would stay right next to me.  I had to walk into the yard with her, but now she follows the other dogs out, does her business, and goes back into the house.  I have to check on her when she goes in alone because I discovered she LOVES to shred paper!  I usually have a paper towel on the table that I put my bottle of water on and if there is no bottle on it, she grabs it and tears it up.  The other day I came home from the store to find my newspaper and a magazine in a million pieces all over the floor.  Needless to say, I don’t leave any paper on my tables anymore!

At meal time, Shelby never wanted to come into the kitchen to eat with the other dogs.  Now she is right there when I get the bowls out, so I don’t even have to call her.  She stays with the other dogs waiting for one to get her meds so they can all have a treat.  She takes treats very gently!

My grandsons spent the weekend with us and she continually stayed by them because they kept petting her.  They don’t have a dog, so when they are visiting, my dogs get spoiled!  She loved their attention!  In my original summary box, I said that Shelby wasn’t cat tested.  Her first foster let me know that she has 5 cats that Shelby spent her first 2 weeks with and was fine with them.

Shelby is a little peanut at 54 pounds and is a beautiful dog.  She is longing for her own family and fur brother or sister.  If you would like to meet her, please send an inquiry form in.
