Welcome, Raphael, to the RAGOM family! This sweet boy was found as a stray and was taken in by Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue. RLRR requested RAGOM’s help in finding a forever home for Raphael. Raphael made the long transport to his foster home in IA last weekend. Raphael is a pretty big name for such a small puppy, so we have given him the nickname Raphie to make calling him a little easier! We are estimating Raphael to be around 16 weeks old and he currently weighs 25.7 pounds. We are guessing that he’s a Golden Retriever/Lab mix. He has a white patch on his chest, a small stripe on his nose, and some white on his toes, but his fur is so light that sometimes it’s hard see his white markings. His coat is a little rough, thin and dry right now, but that should greatly improve with good nutrition!

Raphael gets along great with our two younger Golden Retrievers! He likes to cuddle with one and wants to play with the other. He has shown a little interest in our two cats, but after a little warning swat to the face, he has left them alone! I think he would do just fine in a home with cats. Raphael LOVES my 9-year-old daughter. His whole body wiggles when they play together. Raphael would do great in almost any active home that is prepared for a puppy. He would do fine with or without another dog, though he would love to have play dates with another playful pooch! Raphael doesn’t require a fence as long as his adoptive family is dedicated to keeping him safe, teaching him the property boundaries, and training him to reliably come when called. His forever family should have the time and energy that raising a puppy takes as well as the willingness to take him to obedience training.

Raphael is doing well with his potty training. At night, he is crated and he is doing really well at learning to settle down once in the crate. He sometimes lets out a few howls, but quickly quiets down and settles in to sleep. During the day, when I’m at work, he is in a puppy pen. Even though I come home at lunch to give him a potty break, it’s still sometimes too long for him to hold it, so he uses the puppy pads that I put in his pen. As he gets older, he will be able to hold it for longer periods, though for the next few months, he will still need a potty break during a normal work day. We are taking Raphael outside frequently when he’s out of his kennel, so he is learning to do his business outside with the big dogs. So far, we are accident-free (other than when he uses his puppy pads in his pen) and he seems to be learning our routine!

He is very sweet-natured and loves to cuddle. If I’m sitting on the floor, Raphael will crawl right in my lap. He is still a little shy, though he is starting to open up more now that he’s learning that he’s in a safe and loving environment. He has a great personality and disposition! Everyone commented at the vet’s office how calm he was while we were there, even when he was poked and prodded. He loved giving kisses to the vet techs! At his vet visit, he was dewormed (common to do for puppies at each puppy visit), even though his fecal didn’t show any intestinal parasite eggs. He currently has a skin infection that is being treated with antibiotics and a medicated shampoo. We expect that this should clear up now that it is being treated. He is so good for his baths and takes his antibiotic pill twice daily without any fuss. Raphael was given the bordetella vaccine today, and will get his rabies and distemper booster next week when he is neutered. He was also microchipped at his vet visit.

Interested in this adorable boy? Please contact your placement advisor today! He will be available for adoption after his neuter next week, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t meet with families before that time!

PLEASE REMEMBER:

  • Puppies are a LOT of work in their first year!
  • Puppies have a small, immature bladder and cannot go a full work day without being let out. You will need to make arrangements for someone to come in midday until he is about 6 months old.
  • Puppies NEED obedience, socialization and manners training! RAGOM gets many unmannered and under-socialized dogs surrendered due to the simple lack of training and socialization when the puppy was young. This is a crucial time for puppies to learn about so many things!

Updates

Last weekend was beautiful and Sheldon got out for a nice fall run/walk on Saturday morning. I think he would have preferred foster dad's pace, but he went out with FM instead and was happy just to be out in the crisp fall weather. Doesn't he look great with the fall colors all around him? Sheldon also went to a meet-and-greet on Saturday and met lots of really nice people. One family said that if they could have three dogs, they would definitely add Sheldon as dog #3! At the meet-and-greet, Sheldon also did a great job playing with Juno 14-301. Juno is much smaller than Sheldon (well, most dogs are smaller than Sheldon) and several people noticed that Sheldon was able to modify his playing behavior to match that of a smaller puppy. That's something we haven't seen with Sheldon because at our house, he's playing with a larger, adult dog.

Today, Sheldon was showing off his puppy behavior by getting into a few things around the house here. He really does like toilet paper and taking things out of our shower. We must do more dog-proofing! But he gives up things when we ask him to do that (sometimes it takes a bit of coaxing) and shows no evidence of resource guarding. He shares toys well with our resident dog and today I was throwing tennis balls for both of them at the same time and they were not fighting over the balls.

Sheldon still gets very excited at meal time and we are working on manners. He is so quick to pick up on direction, though. I've worked with him for just a few days to wait on the stairwell landing while I feed our resident dog and get his food ready (he eats in his kennel for now). Already, with just a point to the landing, he goes there and sits and waits for me to get his bowl ready. He is smart. The other thing that I've noticed recently is that Sheldon has a much softer mouth than when he first came to our house. He takes treats much more gently now. This is great progress and I am so proud of him. If you'd like to meet Sheldon, please contact placement. He is really looking forward to meeting his forever family.

Friday, October 3, 2014

It's already October -- we find it hard to believe that Sheldon hasn't found his forever home yet. He's really got some great qualities to share with a forever family, such as:

  • He meets other dogs really well -- we love this about Sheldon!
  • He loves to play and go on walks and runs -- great for an active family.
  • Responds well to basic commands, but needs some work on recall. He's very smart, so we think he will learn this quickly with more focus.
  • He is great in the car, a very calm traveler.
  • He is comfortable in his crate and goes in easily with the "kennel up" command.

We've started letting Sheldon sleep wherever he wants in our bedroom at night. Most nights he ends up in his crate with the door open, but he usually starts out somewhere else in our room first --- on a dog bed, curled up on a rug, etc. We also prefer that our dogs stay off the furniture. Sheldon does this pretty well and gets his paws off when told "off." But if you want a dog to cuddle on the couch with you, we are quite sure he would be up for this! He does like to cuddle with us on the floor.

I've attached a few pictures of Sheldon enjoying an elk antler on a rainy day. Please contact placement if you are interested in meeting Sheldon. He is patiently waiting for his forever family.

Sheldon had a great time at Goldzilla last week and met lots of nice people. He was a little shy with new people, but we know this is normal for him. And, it sure beats a dog jumping up on strangers! He also showed how good he is with new dog introductions. He got along well with all the other dogs he met!

Sheldon has learned how to engage us in a game we call "what's under the couch now?" When he thinks we are getting a little boring, he secretly pushes things under the couch and then stretches his long body out on the floor, puts his head under the couch, and moans a little bit until we release the lost item for him. Sometimes, that item is quickly found underneath the couch again.

I'm attaching a video of Sheldon having fun playing with our resident dog and a picture of Sheldon meeting up with his previous foster mom at Goldzilla. I think Sheldon knew who she was right away as he got very excited when she and her dog showed up. It was really sweet!

Sheldon wanted to do his own update this week, in honor of Goldzilla, so here it is.

I am still having fun at my foster home. The resident dog and I are learning how to burn off some energy playing together. We were introduced rather carefully, since we both really like to play, and it took us a while to figure each other out. But we are having some fun in the backyard now and foster mom said she'd post a picture of that this week. So, hopefully, you can see how much fun I could be to have around. One day this week, foster mom and the resident dog went away for 24 hours. I heard them say it was sort of a test to see how I would do as an only dog. I was completely fine. I like playing with the resident dog here, but I could be fine on my own too, I think. I just need exercise and some good playtime. If I were an only dog, I wouldn't have to share toys with another dog. I do fine sharing toys now. But it might be fun to not have to wait for the resident dog to to drop the toys I'm really interested in. Plus, I like attention, so being an only dog would have that advantage. And for the attention you give me, I'm more than happy to give lots of kisses. I'm looking forward to meeting people at Goldzilla. Just remember that I'm a little shy meeting new people. Foster mom says that maybe my forever family will be there. I sure hope so. See you on Sunday!

Foster Dad wanted me to add a couple of updates (including one that we forgot last week) this week. Last weekend, Sheldon weathered a thunderstorm with no issues. We aren’t sure that he even woke up for it. And this weekend, Sheldon and his foster dog brother went for a nice run with Foster Dad. Foster Dad reported that he was able to run with both leashes in one hand and both dogs were all business on the run. Are there any runners or walkers out there who need a pal? If so, Sheldon is definitely your guy. He loves walks and runs. He’s good on the leash, doesn’t pull when he sees other dogs or humans, and doesn’t pull much when he sees squirrels, rabbits, etc. He is interested in the other animals he sees, but it doesn’t really interfere with his walking.

Things are going really well here. Sheldon and Rupert shared the back end of the station wagon on a long drive this weekend with no issues. Sheldon is really a great traveler. I can’t say enough about his travel skills. I think he really likes watching the big world go by outside. He’s also doing really well remembering his “place” command and we are working on some others, too. He seems very smart and is really treat motivated, so it makes our little training sessions fun. Sheldon is also good about not trying to escape every time we open a door. He really likes to go outside, but is used to sitting before he is released to go out and he’s quite polite about that. He hasn’t tried to jump the fence in our backyard. I haven’t even seen him jump up on it. So, all in all, Sheldon is going to be a good catch for some lucky family. Please let your placement advisor know if you are interested in him. He’s getting really anxious to meet his forever family.

To all the RAGOM fans out there…

Goldzilla is almost here, September 14th, and we just want to let you know about something very special happening the day of the event. There will be a large board (near the baseball backstop) with all the pictures of available dogs. You can help by purchasing a foster paw print sticker at the merchandising tent in increments of $10, $25, $50, and $100. Once purchased, you will place the paw print sticker next to the picture of the dog you’d like to support. You will also have the opportunity to write that particular dog a note, which will be posted the dog’s page after the event. This is a great way to show support for RAGOM and a particular dog that may be pulling at your heartstrings. Please consider stopping by the merchandise tent to purchase a Foster Fan Board paw print while at Goldzilla.

Well, we've had one more week getting to know Sheldon. He took a big trip to the lake cabin last weekend and almost learned how to swim! He really wanted to get in the lake and do some retrieving with his foster brother, but instead, he took a few steps in and turned around and came back out. He did that twice, so we think he may turn into a swimmer if given the opportunity. He also did really well in the car for the long trip. He was a little nervous getting back in the car on the way back, but we quickly worked through it.

We also learned that we have too many things out on the counter! We've been lulled into laziness with a non-counter surfing resident dog, but we are going to do better this week! In the meantime, Sheldon enjoyed a hot dog and a piece of peanut butter and jelly toast! He gets down quickly when told, "off," though. Sheldon is also enjoying taking long walks and his leash skills are already improved from last week. He goes to the bathroom very quickly when we take him out and he still has not had any accidents! We also learned that Sheldon is a bit shy with new people, but he warms up to people quickly -- there's just a little initial shyness. Sheldon is really excited to meet his forever family and show off his tennis ball skills!

Sheldon (previously known as Raphael) is having his first birthday next week! What a great birthday present it would be for him to find a forever home. Sheldon is a a Golden mix weighing 67 pounds. He is neutered and is up-to-date on vaccines, heartworm preventatives, and Frontline. And he's ready to meet his forever family. Sheldon came back to RAGOM because he came to view his 2-year-old human sibling as another dog and was constantly trying to play with him as he would a littermate - knocking him over and stopping him from getting up. There was no aggression at all, just persistent behaviors that tried to keep the toddler on the ground and not moving. For this reason, he needs to go to a home with older children. He got along well with the other dog and cat in his previous home. Here's what we know about Sheldon so far...

  1. He knows some basic commands, including sit. Sheldon is a great sitter!
  2. He's potty trained. No accidents so far.
  3. Sheldon is crate trained and will kennel up easily on command.
  4. Sheldon can amuse himself very well in the backyard playing soccer with a tennis ball, but he also likes you to throw the ball for him. He will retrieve a tennis ball, though may not always drop it at your feet.
  5. Sheldon has a lot of energy and is curious about the world.
  6. Sheldon could use some basic obedience training.

Here's what we think Sheldon would like in his forever home:

  1. Lots of exercise and play. We are working on leash manners and how to run on a leash. Our resident dog is modeling how to be "all business" on a run. We think he'll learn over time. He seems very smart.
  2. He probably needs a fenced yard. He hasn't show much interest in bolting out of our fenced yard and doesn't try to sneak out of the gate, but he's energetic and might run if given the chance.
  3. Older children are fine. Our resident children are 15 and 20 and he likes them a lot.

So, if you'd like a young, energetic dog -- who is really still a puppy at heart, and if you are willing to invest in some basic training, Sheldon may be the dog for you. He is eager to please and affectionate and looking for his forever home.

We graduated from Puppy Kindergarten with great success! If there had been a category for Most Improved, Raphi would have been the clear winner. When he started class, he was very timid and wanted to hang out by his people. On the first night, he tried to hide in the agility tunnel. At this last class, he was running, romping, and wagging his tail - and you could tell that he was really enjoying himself. What a good boy! While Raphi is still appropriately cautious out in public, he's gained a lot of confidence and experience thanks to the great trainers who helped him (and helped us!).

Raphi got to go on a sleep over to visit some of his fellow RAGOM fosters this last weekend and had a great time. When he came home, he must have slept 8 hours straight, he was one tired pup. We were so proud to hear that he behaved well and played hard. All good news!

Raphi is becoming more affectionate and engaged with his people. He clearly loves playing with his dog buddies, but he is now enjoying time snuggling on the couch, resting his head in my lap, and working hard to talk me into sharing whatever snack I might have. He is a great cuddler at night too - he's equally happy sleeping on our bed or settling into his comfy dog bed.

Raphi is definitely maturing, although he's still just a young pup. He's a tall guy, slim and trim. He's really good about waiting his turn, has learned the phrase "off," as in "get off the furniture, please," although we don't mind if he's on the furniture, to tell the truth. He's also learned to eat pancakes off a spoon....

Talk with your Placement Advisor. This is a cute boy with a personality all his own and he is ready to meet his forever family.

Monday, February 24, 2014

Guess who's enrolled in puppy class?!? Raphi is working on becoming the star in his puppy class -- he was a bit ahead in some ways since he already knows sit and down. But now, with some practice, he's working on stay and come, and learning how to walk on a leash with manners. Slowly, he's becoming a bit more confident out in public. He's particularly interested in the other people in the class and enjoys getting petted by adults and kids alike. The dogs and people in class wouldn't recognize him if they could see him leaping and bounding at home. He's very confident and outgoing at home; it's just out in unfamiliar places that he opts to be more cautious and possibly that's not a bad trait!

Raphi is becoming more and more talkative. Although he enjoys a good bark fest when a dog walks by the front of the house, the 'talking' is a different thing entirely. He's downright chatty. Sometimes it's clear that he wants to go outside, while other times he wants the water dish refilled. But then, there are times that he just comes over and chats - and then throws his head back and chats some more. It is absolutely the cutest thing, we've never seen a dog with so much to say! It's not loud, it's not soft, it's just plain conversational.

Raphi is big enough now that he easily jumps up on the bed, but he's smart enough to let the other dogs sleep up on the bed while he sneeks into one of the dog beds with the special foam and enjoys a snooze. Sometimes he's been known to take a midday nap in the dog beds too; he enjoys his creature comforts. When we're away, we still kennel him and he goes in readily with the command 'kennel up,' especially if there's a treat involved.

Raphi's manners are really coming along. He is now confident that if he waits his turn, he'll get a treat along with the other dogs. He no longer has to be the first one out the door and he readily gives up whatever interesting item he's found in the house when asked. The pictures below are from his recent puppy class. Let your placement advisor know if you think Raphi would be a good fit for your home.

Raphi is a growing boy and we think he has more growing still to do. The pictures below give you a better sense of his size. He's not a big bulky guy, but still sleek and trim. He looks very healthy and while he may not have a lot of Golden Retriever in him, he has a lot of Golden personality.. His ears are still a mystery. They don't necessarily stand up (well, occasionally they do), but mostly are out to the side or a bit close to his head. They are very expressive and he uses them to help communicate with his people. He's become even more talkative lately, not in an annoying way, but in a very humerous way. It started a few weeks ago and now he is darn right chatty sometimes. He's not necessarily loud, but does seem to have an opinion to express. Sometimes he's quite dramatic when he's talking and he'll throw his head back and talk away. It's just one of his endearing habits.

The other habit that is really sweet is something he's been doing for a while now. When the older dogs are ready for a nap and he's still feeling playful, he tosses his toys in the air to try to get them interested in playing. If that doesn't work, he tosses his toys down the stairs and runs down to retrieve them. He can do this for quite some time. We think it's the sign of a very smart boy! At the end of the day, he typically has emptied his toy basket and has a full array of toys in the living room.

Raphi has now mastered the use of 'shake' and deploys it to get treats, get on your lap, and to try to talk you into sharing whatever you might be eating. He has excellent house manners and it's been some time since he's had an accident in the house. He does occasionally do submission urination -- just a dribble when he's a bit afraid or uncertain. He's a very confident dog at home with his dog buddies, but he's still a bit shy and uncertain when he's away from home particularly without one of our resident dogs.

Raphi is a healthy boy, up to date on his shots, good at the vets and he doesn't have any qualms about having his nails trimmed. He likes to go for a ride in the car, although that works best when he hasn't recently eaten.

Raphi went to the Meet and Greet in Iowa City at Leash on Life this weekend, where he impressed a number of people with his quiet disposition. I had to tell people that his calm demeanor was a bit deceiving, as is his a very active puppy when he's in comfortable surroundings. He's a typical 5- to 6-month-old puppy running and romping and looking for someone to play with. We call him Thud sometimes because he sounds like a big dog when he runs down the hall with a toy in his mouth trying to keep it away from the big dogs.

If you think Raphi would be a good fit for your household, please contact your placement advisor.

Raphael is about 5 months old now and he weighs about 38 pounds. The size of his paws makes us think he has more growing to do, but it’s hard to know just how big he’s going to be. Right now, he eats 2 cups of puppy food twice a day (well, maybe just a bit more than 2 cups), but he doesn’t wolf it down. He’s very well-mannered, and actually still lies down and stretches out to enjoy a leisurely meal. It’s one of the cutest things he does; so sweet! He’s finally talked our dogs into playing with him and he’s actually become very fast friends with our large 85-pound male. We call them Big and Little – they go around and around outside, but seem to really have the most fun in the house playing a game that only they seem to know the rules for. It involves lots of playful growling and pretend biting. You have to smile watching them as they are so unevenly matched. They can do this game all day with time-outs for an occasional nap or to chew on a toy or possibly look out the window. Everyone is getting lots of exercise when Raphi talks them into playing!

Raphi has mastered sit, down, and shake – he learned shake in something like three minutes. This is a smart boy who is very motivated to learn and please. Although it can’t be true, it’s as if he almost learns by watching the resident dogs. Tonight he thought a piece of aluminum foil looked like something to worry about, but once he saw the other dogs go up and sniff it, he thought it was just fine too. We’re working on teaching him come and will let you know how that goes. Raphi rides well in the car, but it isn’t a big excitement for him. He settles in and takes a nap, unless the other dogs convince him to look out the windows and enjoy the sights.

Here are some pictures that give you a sense of just how sweet (and playful!) this young boy is.

What a spunky little boy this Raphi is!

Raphi has been with us for just over two weeks and he's been a fun addition to our household. He's at a great stage - he's grown a bit in height, possibly gained a bit of weight (he goes to the vet later this week and we'll know for sure), but what's been so incredible is how much he's learned. He's a giant knowledge sponge right now -- he watches everything to see what he should do and where he should be. He's a very quick study, but also smart enough to be cautious. The dogs in our household are a bit older than his playmates at his original foster home, and our dogs just aren't as much fun for a puppy, I think. But Raphi has made it his mission to coax our resident dogs into romping in the backyard and even a game of tug-of-war. He'll find a particularly special toy and flaunt it in front of the other dogs, and then drag it by them until they give in and find themselves engaged in a great game of tug-of-war. Mind you, one of our dogs is 85 pounds, but Raphi doesn't let that stop him. He tosses the toy in the air to make it particularly enticing -- what dog could resist that? One of our favorite Raphi moments was to see him in full-out tug-of-war with our 7-year-old female, Dory. Raphi decided to quit pulling and just stretched out on the floor and let Dory drag him around slowly. Wish I had a picture of that to show you!

Raphi sleeps through the night most nights and whines softly if he needs to go outside. During the day, we make sure to let Raphi outside every time he wakes up from a nap, after he eats, and after he's been playing for a while. This has worked very well -- he hasn't started to go to the door and ask to go out yet, but he has trained us to know just when the need is urgent. Raphi loves to play and when our resident dogs aren't up to the task, he will run laps in the backyard, or we will toss a toy down the hallway repeatedly to give him a chance to stretch his legs and tire himself out. What's really impressive is that he hasn't destroyed a single thing. He has a basket of toys that he empties throughout the day, and he can keep himself busy and content by carrying toys around, tossing them, and doing some serious teething on them as well.

Mr. Raphi shares his toys very nicely and doesn't seem to have any problems if the other dogs come take a look at his bowl while he's eating either. He's a slow eater, he starts his meal standing, and then pretty quickly settles down and stretches out and eats the rest of his meal slowly, enjoying every morsel. Last week, we took Raphi to the pet store to pick up some more dog food and he was a bit overwhelmed by it all. But then he met the shop owner's dog and instantly relaxed, although he was still careful not to stray too far from us. We're going to get him out more this week now that the weather is a bit nicer. I'm including some pictures so you can see how much he's grown.

Our sweet Raphael has moved to his new foster home in Iowa City, IA! There was an urgent foster dog with medical issues that needed a foster home, and since I work at a vet clinic and I have experience with dogs with medical issues, I knew I needed to help this new RAGOM dog! Luckily, a wonderful foster family just 15 minutes from us offered to take Raphael! The first reports from his new foster home are great! He is settling in nicely and is getting along great with his new dog friends. We miss Raphael like crazy already, but we know that he is in great hands and that his new foster family will find him a wonderful forever home! Plus, since he's so close, we'll get to visit him until he gets adopted! Stay tuned for more updates from his new foster family!

Well, Santa didn't bring my forever family... but Foster Mom said she wasn't surprised... that's a lot for the big guy to fit in his sleigh! I still got a lot of great gifts. I liked playing with the wrapping paper as much as my new toys! Santa brought rawhide candy canes - yum!!

I am doing very well with house training! I have had 1 accident in the past week, and I think that was more FM's fault than mine. I was busy playing with Finn and she forgot to let me out, so I piddled a bit on the floor. She is more diligent about letting me out every hour or so now, especially when I am playing as that is when I tend to need to go potty more often. FM gets SO excited and gives me treats every time I do my business outside! I am able to hold it all night while I sleep in my kennel and have gone about 5 hours during the day (in the kennel) without having an accident while FM was gone. FM still comes home at lunch during the work day to let me out and I will need that for another month or more. When FM is home, we go out about every hour or so during the day so I learn to go outside instead of inside.

I love to play and snuggle with the other dogs here. Finn is my favorite since he likes to play fight and wrestle. Vinnie just sits there and lets me bite him, which is fun, but I like a little challenge sometimes! FM tells me that I can be a little "landshark" to the resident dogs, but I'm so good at not using my teeth on people! I chew and bite toys, but I haven't touched things that aren't for us dogs to play with! OK, I admit, FM does a really good job of keeping things picked up so I won't get into them, but I am way too busy with all the cool toys we have here to be bothered by any of her boring stuff. I did try to sneak a glove that my foster sister left by the door, but I quickly dropped it when FM made a "EGH" noise.

I do great with my foster sister (I don't bite her at all and I play nice with her!). FM thinks I would do fine with kids of any age, as long as my adoptive parents know that I am growing into a big and energetic pup, and that I sometimes don't always realize that I bounce into things when I play. I also don't care if my forever home has cats or not. To tell you the truth, I'm terrified of the ones here, even though they ignore me. I barked at one of them my first week here and it hissed at me, and now I stay as far away from them as I can!

I think FM forgot to mention some of the great things about me! I am the BEST at giving kisses! I also know how to sit already, and we are working on come and down. I know the word "outside" and I run to the door! I don't mind being in a crate (no crying), and I don't jump or climb out of my puppy pen or the baby gate in the hallway. I do whine in the morning when I get up and I need to go potty, but I usually let FM sleep in a few hours on weekends, so she doesn't mind a few whines and barks waking her up. She says it's better than cleaning up pee! I am also very respectful when meeting new people and I don't jump up on them at all! As with any puppy, there are a few things I need to work on still, but doesn't every dog have a few things they could improve on? I haven't been on a leash much since it was way too cold to go outside for a week, then I had to be on exercise restriction because of my neuter. We are working on it, but I still need more practice! I also have a habit of not wanting to come inside after going potty - FM puts a trailing leash so she can catch me if she needs to, but usually she just gives me a few more minutes to play outside (by myself, as she usually takes me out without the other dogs, as I tend to get too distracted to do my business if my buddies are out there too!). Sometimes she has to tempt me with treats to come inside, and other times she just has to put her shoes on and come outside, and then I zoom in the back door. She thinks I'm being stubborn... little does she know I'm just playing with her!

I want to send a big THANK YOU to Molly 10-069, Shea, Ellie, and Anna for the holiday icon! How nice of you to donate to RAGOM!

That's all for now - I need a nap!

Love,
Raphael

Dear Santa,

This is my very first Christmas! I have a stocking hung here next to the others. FM has been telling me all about the great things you brought Cadence, Finn and Vinnie last year. I’ve been a very good boy, even though I’m just a baby. I don’t chew on shoes, I don’t destroy anything in the house except for my toys, I try not to potty on the carpet, and I don’t fight with my foster brothers... well, except when we play fight!

I could ask for toys, treats, bones, or even a new bed. All of that would be nice, but there is just one thing that I want. Can you bring me my forever family? Please, Santa? I love it here, but I really want a family and home of my very own. I promise to love my family forever and always be a good boy.

Love always,

Raphael

Is this boy cute or what?! He cocks his head to the side whenever he hears a funny noise. Those ears of his have a mind of their own sometimes and they give him so much personality!

Raphael has two new requirements - a fence and another dog - in his forever home. As we have gotten to know him more, we see how he interacts with us with and without our dogs around. He is shy and reserved when they aren't around, but is a wild and happy puppy when they are. Our two resident dogs are teaching him how to trust us and about everything new to him (like living indoors). If my dogs aren't around, he would much rather hang out in his puppy pen than be out interacting with me and his environment. But, luckily, he is getting a lot better already and I think that with another confident dog for him to model after, he will grow up to be a happy and socialized dog.

Potty training is a work in progress, but I feel like he is doing a lot better! Most nights he can hold it all night, but he has cried a few nights around 3 am needing to go outside. He has had a few accidents during the day even though I let him out every hour or so when I'm home. I think he gets so busy playing outside that he sometimes forgets about what he needs to do when he goes outside! During the work day, I come home at lunch to let him out. He is in the puppy pen during the day, and I put down puppy pads down for him to use if he needs to. Some days he does use them, other days he doesn't have any accidents. I have a very easy schedule the next few weeks with the holidays, so it will be a great opportunity to work on his potty training.

Raphael was neutered today and got his rabies vaccine and distemper booster. He will need one more distemper booster in 3-4 weeks, then he will be good for that one for another year. He was quiet on the way home after his surgery, but he is feeling very comfortable and acts like nothing happened. He is not enjoying going on to potty on a leash or that I'm making him stay in the puppy pen to rest, but at least he doesn't have to wear the cone of shame (yet)!

We are working on training and he already knows how to sit for treats! He takes treats very nicely. I switched his food (he didn't like the Wellness puppy) to Taste of the Wild High Prairie puppy and he loves it! He has gained 2 pounds in the past week. With proper nutrition, he has grown quite a bit taller, too!

If you are interested in Raphael, please contact your placement advisor! He is a very special puppy and he will make some lucky family very happy!

There isn't much to report since it hasn't been too long since his initial update, but I wanted to share the new pictures of Raphael! Little Raphael is definitely getting more comfortable with our home and living indoors! He has started to explore further into our living room, and his favorite spot is curled up on one of the orthopedic dog beds! Raphael has been playing hard with his foster brother, Finn, in the snowy back yard. They wrestle and play fight until they are both too tired to move. Raphael then naps for a few hours before being ready to play again!
