Shiloh was surrendered because his owner was moving for his health and couldn't have large dogs where he was going to live.

What a cuddly teddy bear!  Shiloh is a purebred make AKC Golden Retriever, super-sized at 113 lbs. He celebrated his 9th birthday in June.

Shiloh entered my life a week ago.  He met my cats, adapted to them with their quirky personalities quickly.

Then, the resident dogs.  The smallest, a male Beagle mix found Shiloh to be submissive.  The larger dogs found him to be friendly.  One happy family!  Senior dogs have learned the skill of getting along and more mellow than the younger pups.Shiloh has grown up around many children and does well.  Although very small children could be bumped over and walked on, if not careful.  He is not rambunctious, just a "bull in the china cabinet" at times.

Shiloh had lived within a fenced yard and dog house for nine years.  He had a doggie "partner in crime" outdoors, a German Shepherd.  They seemed to enjoy each others' companionship. In foster Shiloh is adjusting to the Golden indoor life and doing super! He housetrained almost instantaneously and NO marking indoors!

For several days he did not eat  (no, not even tempting treats). I wonder if he was homesick and then formerly, he was on a free choice meal plan.  Good news is that he is starting to show interest in food/treats Thursday.  I find he likes company while eating and he takes treats along side my dogs with a soft mouth. A-ha.  Training material.

Shiloh has proven trustworthy free roam for two hours.  No destruction.  He does like to know where I go when I disappear.  His nose was stuffed into the kitty door.  I have not been able to get him into the plastic crate-not even for treats.  I don't anticipate that he would need it on an ongoing basis, but it is a useful skill for possible boarding or medical situations.

Walking on leash is a work-in-progress.  He never had been to classes and leash walking is a new concept, but he doesn't pull and is rarely stubborn.  As my trust in his behavior grows, our walks increase.

Shiloh had his wellness exam on Wednesday, updated on his vaccinations, checked for heartworm(negative) and treated for parasites.  Interceptor will prevent any more parasites and the recommendation is year-round administration for two reasons: prevent resistance in heartworm and prevent parasitic worms year round.  The vet recommends a healthy weight of 80-85 lbs. Hello, weight watchers.

To summarize, Shiloh would be a great companion for a another dog and a wonderful friend to anyone that could use unconditional love. From observation and his long history of a buddy dog, he may do better if another dog is in the family, unless someone is around most of the time.  He could benefit from training and he may be easily boundary trained.  Remember old dogs can learn new tricks.  He has good recall, but I use a leash/line for safety. He is fine with children and cats.  Weight loss would be helpful for his health forward.

If Shiloh sounds like your kind of guy, check with your placement advisor and watch for further news.

Shiloh would like to thank RAGOM for all the support.  He has his wish this Christmas.  Shiloh has his very own family to care for him and love him!  A Mom, Dad, human sister and a companion dog.  He has a huge home to bounce around in and a fenced yard!  Shiloh will enjoy his retirement years!

My family and I will miss Shiloh a  lot.  He easily burrowed his way into all our hearts!   He is the symbol of the Golden experience, at its' best.

Merry Christmas, Shiloh, and Happy New Year!

Sorry, I couldn't visit at the Edina meet-and-greet, Saturday, October 24th.  I was looking forward to meeting new people and dogs.  Sadly, I was indisposed.  Foster mom is investigating.  Was it the Interceptor? Inappropriate ingestion? Have you heard of that?  No self-respecting retriever would ever...probiotics, hello.

It was too bad I couldn't show off my gorgeous golden fur.  Foster mom and her son gave me a bath.  That's right, a bath.  I was not cooperative, but now I feel so squeaky clean.  I'm almost looking forward to the next bath. Oh, I'm so tempted to roll in the pile of leaves.  Foster mom would NOT be pleased.

Hope you're enjoying this fall weather as much as me!  Foster mom broke down and got candy bars for the trick-and-treaters.  Alas, we had only a couple, but I gave the bark of "hello".  We walk through the rustling leaves every day and the scents are fascinating.  Needless to say, our walks are my favorite time of day.

Later.  I need to supervise the painting. Shiloh

Hello, folks!  It is Shiloh again!  Do you know what my favorite game is? "How many cockle burrs can I find today?"  (too many)  I keep foster mom busy removing them from my luxurious golden fur. I seem to find them in the most unusual places!

Sniffing is particularly fine-autumn scents, deer and raccoons.  My dog buddies and I have good times checking out the trails every morning.  Did I mention all those squirrels?

 Update by foster mom:

What a trooper!  Shiloh was neutered 10/6 and now is up and around, after a day recovering from the anesthesia.  He enjoyed a special breakfast and a lot of special attention.  He was on restricted activity for ten days and now is on his way to healing.

I am pleased that Shiloh enjoys free roam four to five hours (with his buddy dogs).  Yes, the house was still standing and not a speck of destruction.

Shiloh loves being involved with the family.  He has an easy-going personality.  So gentle with the cats.  It's amazing how careful he is around the grandtoddler although it is never a good idea to leave a small child alone with any dog of any size.

Walks have become easier.  Shiloh has learned/experienced a lot in just 30 days.  I am pleased with his progress!  His palate has expanded to include many foods, including green beans.  No longer a problem eater.  Shiloh finds balls outside, looks delighted at his finds and brings them to me. He follows me down the stairs to the family room without hesitation now.

Shiloh is watching the fluttering orange and yellow leaves.  Yes, winter is coming.  I have the right guy for you!  He has warmth for two, maybe three and is willing to share!

Shiloh has an appointment for a professional shampoo and trim.  At home, nails are trimmed and ears are cleaned without problems.  We'll see how he tolerates the grooming experience.
