Meet Sounder 14-062, a 2-year-old Golden mix who has joined the RAGOM family. Sounder, a South Dakota boy, was turned into the animal shelter with some severe injuries and medical problems, but he’s on the mend and receiving great care, thanks to generous RAGOM donors. He still needs more veterinary attention, but is feeling better every day. (He would love for someone to help him out with his medical bills.)

In his time with us, Sounder has lived up to his nicknames.

Sweet Little Sounder: Sounder is a very sweet dog that loves attention, belly rubs, and loving pets. He has done very well meeting strangers and small children. He likes to put his head in your lap or cuddle up next to you—sitting or standing. He doesn’t care if he knows you or not; you are his best friend when you are giving him affection. When you stop, he will nudge you for more, or move to the next person in the room to give him love.

Smart Little Sounder: Sounder is a very quick learner and has mastered sit and stay (especially when food or a treat is involved). We’re still working on shake and lay down. He gets very excited and “jumpy” at times, but calms down when given direction to settle. On walks, he matches the pace of our older resident dog, and will stand patiently and wait for her to do her business.

Speedy Little Sounder: Every day, Sounder feels a little bit better and exhibits his playful puppy side. He loves to run around the yard at full speed, wearing himself out in about 10-15 minutes. He’s VERY quick and has shown a tendency to want to chase birds, bunnies, and squirrels while on a walk. He will always need to be leashed when outside a fenced-in area.

Sounder the Stealer: Sounder loves socks, shoes, and slippers. He doesn’t destroy them. He just collects them. He easily gives them up once given a toy or a Nylabone to chew on instead. Did we mention he loves toys? He loves a variety of things to play with, but does not destroy or de-stuff anything.

Sounder is not ready for adoption just yet, but when he has regained his health, he will make some family or active individual a very good dog.

Sounder is feeling much better and his active puppy side is starting to come out. Sounder is a typical puppy with the puppy behaviors - he gets excitable, jumpy, and is in learning stages of appropriate play and manners. Sounder is a quick learner and a delightful boy! He will enjoy lots of active walks, outings, play, and obedience.

Sounder might be a mix, but his heart is pure Golden. He loves people, follows you room to room, and loves attention…almost as much as he loves food and treats. He is not territorial or food aggressive. In fact, we haven’t seen any aggression or guarding behavior, and he has a foster sister that is on a diet and just waits for him to walk away from his food. It didn't take long for him to realize that if he left before it was all gone—it would be by the time he got back.

As the weather has warmed up, Sounder has had the opportunity to be more social with people and with other dogs. He seems to love just about everybody and everything.

Ready for a walk

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Sounder had his first RAGOM Meet and Greet this past weekend at the Shop Dog Boutique in Sioux Falls. He loved being around all the people and the other dogs. He did very well meeting new friends and moved from person to person in search of love and cuddles. However, as the two-hour event began to wind down, Sounder became more interested in playing with toys than mingling with the others. He was one tired puppy at the end of the day and enjoyed a little snuggling with his foster sister.

Sounder has a new nickname today—Silly Little Sounder. His personality has really started to come out and you can tell that he is feeling better. He really enjoys walking and will need a good partner that will help him burn some energy. He’s very environmentally conscience, taking special care to pick up litter he finds along the way. He’ll usually carry it several blocks before dropping it at your feet so you can carry it to the trash. If you don’t pick it up, he gives you a look as if you have offended him. He has done this several times now and it's obvious that he "gives a hoot! And doesn’t pollute."

He’s a playful pup and it’s fun watching his little quirks come out. We couldn’t resist sharing these photos of him eating.
