Mr Sunny came to our house today. He is a friendly 8-year-old fellow who loves to play fetch! He came to RAGOM because he does not do well with children. He needs to go to a home with no children. He is estimated to weigh about 80 pounds. As soon as I get him to the vet, I will know more about his weight and other details. He has lived with cats and gets along with other dogs. He is very friendly and appears to have had some obedience training. He jumped right in my car and was very well-behaved during a 45-minute car ride. He needs a fenced-in yard or will wander away. That is all for today, but more updates will follow as I get to know this nice guy.

It has been pretty quiet this last week. Too cold to do much tennis ball fetching outside. Sunny was snoozing the other day and just as he woke up I got a picture of him with the tip of his tongue showing. He is awfully cute. He loves being combed and brushed and of course he loves to put his head in my lap (and his foot too). He is a dog who loves to be touched and close to a person. If you are looking for a warm cuddly buddy to keep you warm, Sunny could be the boy for you!

Merry Christmas from Santa to the Golden Seniors! Merry Christmas from Santa to the Golden Seniors!

Sunny kept licking his knees, so I put a "No-Bite" collar on him (see pictures). He is such a long bodied guy he is still able to lick one knee, but the collar stops all of the rest of the licking. I don't make him wear it all of the time, just when I can't watch him. One time I let him wear it when he went out in the snow. He loves rolling around in the snow. When he came back inside he had about two cups of snow inside of the big collar. He is very good natured about wearing the collar even though he doesn't like it.

As I am typing this update Sunny wants more attention. He groans/grumbles when he want more attention. He is something of a talker.

I have mentioned that Sunny loves to be near me. This picture shows how he really thinks that he is a lap dog. I am sitting on my bed and Sunny has draped his head and shoulders over my lap. He just LOVES to do this.

He does not have any tick related diseases, so the vet is running another test on his urine to check other factors.

I was playing fetch with Sunny last week. He has such a great time doing that. He goes at it 150%, which is not always a good thing. After about 5 minutes of fetch he yelped and picked up his left front foot. He would not put any weight on it, but still wanted to play 3 legged fetch! I convinced him to come in the house. He stopped limping after a couple of days and now is back to normal. I think the next time we play, I will do more high throws in the air which he can catch instead of low balls that he charges after.

I took Mr Sunny to Ollu Dog Wash today. He behaved very well and seemed to enjoy the bath. I used a medicated shampoo to help his itchiness. He stood so still for the whole process that I think if felt really good to him. He was so good that he did not even shake and get me wet!

He was at the vet again this week. They put special medication in his ears that only needs to be put in once. Since he is so touchy about his ears, this is the best way to go. They also took blood for a Lyme Disease test and the result of that should be back on Monday. Lyme Disease could have caused the elevated kidney readings that Sunny has shown.

Sunny and I hope that we will have a vet-free week coming up.

Monday, December 8, 2014

Mr Sunny has settled in to the routine at our house after only a week. He has been to the vet. He is now up to date on his shots and has been microchipped.  He weighs 84 pounds which is a healthy weight for him. He is a tall guy. He has a history of not liking vets, so I muzzled him for the first visit. It turns out that he is fine except when work needs to be done around his head. He had two massive mats of fur behind his ears, so the vet cut the mats off. His ears were dirty and appeared to have infections. The vet cleaned them out and prescribed ear medicine. Sunny has not been cooperating with the ear medicine, so we made need to try another approach. The vet said that Sunny either has a urinary tract infection or a chronic kidney problem. We are waiting to get some test results to determine which it is.   He has allergies so I have been giving him benadryl to help with the itchiness. So it has been a pretty busy medical week for this boy. On his second trip back to the vet, the technician said he was easier to handle than he had been on the first trip. That is good.

We have had a few games of fetch and he LOVES that. Keeping in mind his age, I have kept the sessions short. His previous owner mentioned that he limps a little if he does too much fetch. I am attaching a picture of Sunny with one of our stuffed toys. He loves to carry this one around and chew on it. (Not as much fun as fetch, but nice substitute when a guy is inside.)

He is very patient with one of my dogs who is old and crabby. She snarls and snaps if anybody bumps into her (or thinks about bumping into her). Sunny has shown no aggression even when provoked by her.

I have let him roam free when I am gone and he has been a good boy. He may have had an accident, but when there are two other dogs in the house, I don't know for sure who did the deed.

He is very affectionate and loves being near me as much as possible. He will make someone a great cuddle buddy through the long cold winter nights. Could that be you?
