Happy Spring!  "Happy Spring Surf!" In Memory of Mollie, from Lisa B.

In addition to LOVE this dog has the following requirements:

This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Welcome Surf 16-020 to RAGOM. He is a "Honorary" Golden. He is said to be all yellow Lab but has some look of Bloodhound or possibly other breed. Surf is 6 years old. He weighs in at 91.75 lbs and is at ideal weight. He's a big strong boy! Surf was neutered at a young age and doesn't have strong "marking" tendencies.

I had Surf in for his RAGOM wellness exam the second day I had him here. He was in good health and was up to date on all vaccines other than Boardatella, so now he is up to date on all vaccines. The only not so great thing was that he tested positive for Lyme disease. The testing positive does not mean he has it, only that he was once bitten by the same type of tick that can carry Lyme disease. Since Surf is showing no symptoms of Lyme, it's a very safe bet that he does not have it. He has been on flea/tick preventative the last 4 years. In my vet's words " Surf is a happy and very healthy 6 year old dog"

Surf rides in cars/trucks very well. When we arrived at my house, he met my resident boy Joe and my 2 house cats with no problems at all. Surf tried to initiate play with Joe, but Joe doesn't know how to play. Our first walk on a leashand flat collar didn't go very well. Surf will pull like a sled dog. Since then I have used a Gentle Leader with him and he does very well with that. Surf can walk 3 miles very easily. His SO[surrendering owner] would jog 5 miles with him. Surf is 100% house broke. No accidents at all. He give a quiet bark or stands by the door if he needs to go out. On the template at the top of this, I put "Fence Desired". I put that because Surf is used to a fence and/or invisible fence. Surf does have pretty good recall. A fence just makes things safer. I'm not requiring a fence for potential adopters.

In other things: Surf loves to play. He has lots of energy. I've played Frisbee with him for close to a hour without him getting tired. He makes great leaping grabs. I haven't tried fetch with a ball yet. Surf is said to absolutely love water. Surf lived in California in his younger days. I have a picture of him on a surf board. Perhaps Surf could be taught to waterski or wakeboard???

Also on the top of this page it says: "Kids 8+ years old". Surf is a big boy and throws his body around a bit. He can easily knock a 8 year old over if he gets excited. The main reason for the age requirement is that if Surf tires out and small kids keep trying to play with him, he will growl. He hasn't bit anyone but it was a growing concern for his surrendering owner and the reason he was surrendered to RAGOM. They had 2 kids under 3 years old and a third one on the way. I'm thinking by 8 years old , kids can be taught to respect the dog and read his signals that he wants to rest. Kids younger than 8 can be around him but should be supervised. Some of the things I have been working on with Surf are: Sitting and staying for his food. He is doing very well with that. I've also been making him sit before going through a door to go outside. Surf would push and shove and then bolt through any door. He getting better at the giving me a "sit" but must be told every time. He has improved, but needs more work. As mentioned, Surf does have pretty good recall. It could be better, so we work on that. Surf knows "Lay Down" and will shake hands with both paws.

Surf is a velcro dog. He sticks very close to me at all times. He loves to snuggle. Surf sleeps in bed with me and keeps pressed up against me most of the night. If given the opportunity, Surf will give big wet sloppy kisses. He's a very affectionate dog and loves all attention. I haven't seen any type of anxiety from Surf. He is waiting at the door for me when I come home.

Does Surf 16-020 sound like the dog for you or would you like to learn more about him? Contact your placement adviser. I may be bringing Surf to the next couple Meet & Greets in Coon Rapids and Shakopee. This page will be updated before those events, so stay tuned.

Updates

Update from Surf! We have been going to the dog park 2-4 times a week it's only about a 10 minute drive from my house, I've gotten to know the road we take and when we get close I start talking and telling mom and dad how excited I'm getting to go run at the park. Mom says my talking sounds like loud whining and crying and she tells me "Surfy we're almost there now be quiet!" I can't help it! It's so much fun, we walk with mom or dad and get to meet all kinds of other dog friends and run and play fetch, but after about two laps we are real tired and it's time to go home! We have some pics from the last few times we were there!

Also last week I got to go see an old friend. When I was fostered at foster dad Barry's house there was another foster dog there named Braden.

You will never guess what happened. Braden got adopted out to a family that lives in the same town as us, in fact, they live only a few blocks from us! So mom and Maddy took Leine and I to see Braden. We got to play in his yard, I know Braden remembered me but he doesn't have as much energy as Leine and I do so he watched us play and Maddy petted him a lot. I think next time we get together Braden will play with us!

My family likes to go camping and so I've gotten to sleep in a camper and go swimming in the lake to cool off. I really like to swim and play fetch in the water!  Well that's it for now thanks for checking on me I'm doing good!

Hi all, Surf here, it's been four weeks since I joined my new family and I am really enjoying them. My brother Leine is my new best friend he has shared all his things with me and we even got a few new toys and bones! I sleep with my brother Logan in his bed every night (he is a person) and Leine sleeps with my sister Maddy (she's a person too). Mom says this gives us some alone time to get all the attention. Leine sometimes gets a little jealous of me but Mom says he's getting better the more we get used to each other. We have been going to the dog park at least two or three times a week I really like playing there with my family and other dogs.  We went and met Leine's vet because Leine was due for his annual visit, they all thought I was a cutie and they were glad mom and dad adopted me.

Well that's all for now mom says she's going to talk for a bit.

Surf has been a great addition to our family we love him dearly. He is fitting in well with our family. I want to thank RAGOM and his foster dad Barry for taking good care of him till we could adopt him he is just a sweet dog!

We will update again soon!

The R family

Monday, April 18, 2016

Hi Surf fans, Surf here again.

Well, it seems that I charmed the R family at the Edina M&G. They came and officially met me at FD's house on Friday 4/15. I had lots of fun [maybe too much] playing with Lieney the Yellow Lab.

They all came back on Saturday and I got to play more with Lieney while the adults read and signed papers. Those papers were my adoption papers! I'm now part of the R family and get to play with Lieny all the time.

Thank You RAGOM , RAGOM supporters and Foster Dad for helping me in my time of need for a new family. I hope my new mom will let me on the computer to post "Happy Endings" updates. Thanks again everyone. Surf 16-020.

Surf here reporting again,

Since my last update, I went to another Meet & Greet. It was a bit noisy at first and made me have my guard up. I was fine when things calmed down. I met lots of people there. There were 3 families that came there just to meet me! One of the families had already put in a "inquiry" for me. They have a yellow Lab like me! Since I am checked out to them, I am closed to Apps for now. If something doesn't work out, I could become "available" again so check back on my status.

We had a guest at our house this week. DeClan 16-046 was back while his FM traveled. We get along fine unless he starts licking my face. I give him a lip curl and he will knock it off. I'm very glad he took the hint. I'm almost 3 times his weight and could easily hurt him if he made me mad enough.

I now have discovered that I can terrorize a family of rabbits, squirrls and the outside cats. The cats aren't that afraid of me any more. I'd love to get to actually chase the rabbits but I'm usually inside the fence, so a lunge and bark will have to do.

FD took resident Joe 15-226 and foster brother Braden to the vet last week. Braden had put on 9 lbs that he needed. Joe had put on 12 lbs that he didn't need. Joe now gets diet food and we are walking much further and twice a day , most days. Now the bad, FD is making me wear the Gentle leader again. He said I was just pulling too hard on the collar and that I am much better with the Gentle Leader. I stlll hate it but seem to be getting better at tolerating it. I am also starting to "work" the ditches along the road . Lots of smells there. Even a few gopher holes to stick my snout in.

That's about all for now. Thanks for checking in on me.

Surf 16-020

Friday, April 1, 2016

Hi fans, Surf here again,

First of all I must thank Lisa B for the spring decoration on my page. I forgot to do that with my last update. I'm grateful for all the support. I must have charmed Lisa at the Coon Rapids M&G.

Speaking of Meet & Greets, I will be at the Edina M&G on Saturday 4/2 from noon-2pm. I'd love to meet you. There will be lots of other RAGOM dogs and volunteers there also. Hope to see you there.

In other news, My foster brother , Braden 16-044 now sleeps in bed at night with me and FD. FD thinks its a bit crouded. I think it is cozy until one of the cats tries to snuggle with me.

The rain and mud the last few days has limited our walks. I'm not real happy about that but i chew on bones to keep busy. FD promised 2 walks per day when it drys up. That's about all I have to report this time.

Thanks for checking in on me!

Surf 16-020.

Hi, Surf here! FD [Foster Dad] thought I should start doing my own updates.

Since my last update, I got a couple foster brothers, Braden 16-044 and DeClan 16-046. They came from a hoarding situation. They were both pretty sacred from all the changes and were very skinny. I gave them lots of space and kept away from them, most of the time, for a few days. DeClan was just here as a temp foster and left a few days later for his perm foster home.

I'm glad to report that FD gave up on using the Gentle Leader on me. I really hated it and spent much of my walk trying to get it off. FD said I was being a big baby about it. FD says I have improved with just the martingale collar but still could use some work.

Speaking of walks, we are walking 2 1/2 miles or more per day. Every other day I walk 1/2 mile with foster brother Braden. When I get adopted, I would like to be a running partner. I could run 5 miles or more at a time. I love lots of activity. I also love water and could be a lake dog.

Things didn't work out with the 1st family that inquired about me, so I am still very much available. You can meet me at a Meet & Greet on 4/2. Check back to see if I will be in Edina or Brooklyn Park.

Could I, Surf 16-020, be the dog of your dreams? Fill out a inquiry form or contact your placement advisor. Thanks for your support and for checking in on me, Surf 16-020.

Since the last update, Surf attended the Meet & Greet event in Coon Rapids. He did great meeting people and dogs. He had several families that came just to meet him. One family that met him had already show interest and had begun the RAGOM adoption process. They fell in love with him and are going through the application and Home visit. I'm hoping it works out but is not final at this point.

Surf continues to improve on walking on a leash and sitting before going out a door. His recall when walking still needs work but has gotten better.

On a funny note, I got 2 new foster dogs this week. They are both very underweight Labs. Big 92 lb Surf is scared of them. After 2 days he isn't as scared but still wants nothing to do with them at this point.

Surf continues to be well behaved and affectionate.

Thanks for checking in on Surf 16-020
