It is my privilege to be the first to introduce Miss Zoey to RAGOM!  Zoey made the long trip from Iowa to Mn just yesterday (Mother’s Day).  She wants to give a kiss to Cheerie and Amy for driving her so far.

Zoey comes from a large family with 7 children.  She loves children!  She was surrendered due to the cost of her current care.  She was an outside dog because she had incontinence issues.

Zoey is about the sweetest girl I have met.  But unfortunately while I am typing this, she is not with me.  I knew when I agreed to take her, that she needed to go to the Vet ASAP.  She was weak and only weighed 47 pounds.  (And she has a large frame)  We went to the vet this morning, and I was told she has kidney failure, and is anemic.   She will remain there up to 3 days.   They suggested a fluid IV to rehydrate and an appetite stimulant to get her to eat.  While kidney failure is irreversible, our goal is to get her comfortable, try to gain weight and put on a special diet.  Her long term prognosis is unknown at this time, but she will more than likely have a shortened  life.

I originally agreed to temporary foster Zoey.  But in less than 24 hours, this girl has stolen my heart.  She will remain in my care until she is healthy enough to start looking for her forever family.

I feel so incredibly honored to say I am a RAGOM volunteer.  This beautiful girl came to us YESTERDAY and she is already receiving the best care money can buy.  Who takes in a dog, knowing she needs vet care ASAP?  RAGOM does, that’s who!  But this poor girl is in rough shape and she needs YOUR help.  Will you please sponsor her to help pay for her medical bills?  Please go to www.ragom.org.  She deserves a 2nd chance.

On Saturday, June 23rd, we helped our sweet, sweet Zoey cross the Rainbow Bridge. She had not eaten for about 5-6 days with the exception of a few pieces of cheese and had grown weak. When she woke on Saturday, she couldn’t walk without shaking, so she would just lay down again. I think her body just had enough, and she was telling me it was time.

Zoey is only our 2nd foster and the first dog I have ever had to put down. My heart has broken into a million pieces. We only had her a little over a month, but she was really something special. My entire family is mourning her passing, which just proves how sweet and precious she was.

A heartfelt thank you to RAGOM for taking in a dog with known health problems and stopping at nothing to try to fix her. I would also like to thank her sponsors: Mary M, and Sam the Wookie and his family; and her donors: Jenessa and Matt K, Champ and his family, and Katie, Norton and Hadley for their thoughts, prayers and donations to RAGOM. I just wish you all could have met her.

Thank you to everyone at Valley View Pet Hospital. Thank you to Kaytlin for her compassionate and loving care to Zoey. You guys are amazing.

I am convinced Zoey is in Heaven and she is having the time of her life! She gets to act like a 2 year old puppy and her body isn’t failing her. I know we will meet again, Zoey. Until then, we will think of you often and will be grateful of the time we got to spend with you.

Zoey had been experiencing a few days of diarrhea, so a trip to the vet was in order.  We were concerned she was getting dehydrated.   We found out that she still had the hookworms, and I was actually relieved to hear that!  (I was expecting the worst).  Her immune system is not what it should be, so it will take longer for her to fight anything off.  As an example, the spot on her leg where she was shaved for the IV, over a month ago, the fur just never grew back.

We continue to do the sub-q fluids every day at home.  After she looks like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, until the water is absorbed into her body.  Thankfully she just lays there and relaxes!

Zoey, my daughter and I had a fun time at the Parktacular Event on Saturday!  It started out with a golf cart ride to our booth, as Zoey tires easily and it was just too far for her to walk.  We spent 3 hours just telling people how wonderful RAGOM is, and how much they are doing to help Zoey.    She wore a vest to help collect donations.  Isn’t she cute???

I asked the vet’s opinion on Saturday how he thought Zoey was doing.  He said she looked very happy.  I was thrilled to hear that.  I am, obviously, attached to her.  I feel I will know when she’s had enough., but I was very pleased to hear that from her vet.  I do not want to put her through anything her body can’t handle, or if she just doesn’t have the will anymore.

Zoey and I will be at the PRIDE festival in Loring Park in Mpls on Saturday from 10-12pm.  We would love to meet you and talk about how AMAZING RAGOM is!!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Sam, the Wookie, 11-010 and his wonderful family for sponsoring Zoey!!!  We can’t thank you enough!  A great big Zoey-girl hug to all of you!  (This girl is  not a kisser ;)

There hasn’t been much change to Zoey.  We are still giving her sub-q fluids at home.  My 10 year old daughter helped me last time.  Between giving her diabetic brother, who’s 7, shots and Zoey her fluids, that girl is destined to become either a doctor, veterinarian or nurse!  But back to Zoey!  She is still the pickiest eater and it isn’t unusual for her to eat only a ½ cup of food one day and (maybe) a cup the next.  I wish I could fatten this poor girl up.  She really is all bones underneath  that beautiful coat.

But isn’t she a beauty?

Her favorite toy is a stuffed Baltimore Oriel.  She will carry it around and sometimes lick it!  If you give it a squeeze, it will sing like an Oriel.  She immediately drops it, cocks her head and lifts her ears.  It’s as if she’s saying, What was that?  It’s the cutest thing! 

We will to be at:  Parktacular's Splash into Summer Celebration with Parade and Meet & Greet at :  Wolfe Park, 3700 Monterey Dr., St. Louis Park, MN this Saturday, June 16th from noon-2pm.  We would love to meet, thank and give hugs to all that have kept Zoey in their thoughts, prayers and pocketbooks!  And of course talk about how wonderful RAGOM is (look at how they are helping Zoey!) and how Zoey is inspiring people to give unconditionally!

A huge THANK YOU to Katie, Norton and Hadley in Iowa for their donation to RAGOM in Zoey’s name!  I am just so overwhelmed by the support and compassion from RAGOM followers, adopters and volunteers!  THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

There hasn’t been too much change in Zoey.  Her eating and drinking was not getting better, so we are now doing sub-q fluids at home.  (I insert the needle and my husband squeezes out the water from the bag.)  I never thought I’d be able to do this, but it’s amazing what you do when someone needs you!  She handles it beautifully, and she gets pretty relaxed.

Zoey still likes to follow us around, still goes potty outside, and she still tries to play with Buddy.  I am hoping she will tell us when she’d had enough.  She is such a wonderful dog and I hate that she’s going through this.  It breaks my heart.

Hello all you golden lovers!  It’s me, Zoey.  I know my FM did a post a few days ago, but I wanted a turn!  First of all, I want to give a big hug to Mary.  My FM was so happy when she saw that Mary sponsored me, that she cried!  Thank you again, Mary, for your awesome donation and caring about me.

There really hasn’t been any change for me.  I just really don’t like to eat.  Cheese is the only thing I don’t turn my nose up at.  My FM also gives me a pill for the acid in my stomach, whatever that means!  And they are always trying to get me to drink water.  It’s kind of annoying!  ;)  And I  have an ear infection and have drops put in them.  I don’t like that either.

I’m also tired all the time.  I take naps where ever I want.  My favorite place is probably at the bottom of the steps.  It’s nice and cool there.

I am on the left, and Buddy is on the right.  Buddy is a pretty nice dog, but he’s always eating my food!!!  My FM always gets so mad at him when he does that!  But then she just puts more out for me and tells me to eat.  I just wish I had an appetite.

Here is another picture of me with Buddy.  Sometimes I think he knows I’m sick.  But then he goes and eats my food again!! 

Thank you to everyone that is thinking and praying for me.  I feel so lucky to have a foster family that loves me and people out there that are pulling for me.

My last Zoey update was a good one.  She was eating, drinking and appeared to have more energy.  Unfortunately, the past 2 days haven’t been great.  Her appetite has tanked, and her drinking is down.  I know she has kidney disease, but the last week she seemed to have improved, and I (almost) forgot that I was taking care of a sick dog.  I guess she will have good days and bad days.  Let’s hope she starts eating again soon, and we can get our Zoey puppy back!

Zoey has not had an accident in our house for 4 days.  She was kept outside due to incontinent issues.  She had a few accidents the first couple of days, but she caught on fast.  She has free reign of ½ of our house, and she hasn’t had in accident during the 6 hours she’s alone.  She’s very smart!

First and foremost a HUGE THANK YOU to Champ and his family for the  amazing donation in Zoey’s name!!  I was moved to tears when I saw that.   It’s awesome what animals do for us and how generous people can be for animals!

I am happy to report that Zoey has been eating and drinking more!  While her energy level is nowhere near that of a 2 year old pup, she has been showing us a playful side.  She even tried to counter surf yesterday for our steak, and we were almost happy!!  (We had only seen a very weak dog until just a few days ago.)  This sweet girl also has a silly side.  She appears to have a thing for socks!  If the kids leave a sock laying around, she will find it, and bring it into our living room.   I had clothes folded in a basket, and she sifted through it, to pull out the socks!

Here is a picture of Miss Zoey opening a box.  A toy/blanket was left in one of the transporters cars, and she mailed it to her.  It’s almost like she knew it was for her ;)

We had 5 dogs here over the weekend.  We knew she’d do great with them, and she did.  We also know she likes cats, as both Zoey and a few cats had free reign at the vet’s office.

Zoey has been with us just over a week.  She is settling in with my family very well.  This girl has the will to live!!!  She is not going to give up and frankly, we won’t let her!!

Zoey remained at the vet Monday-Wednesday (A huge thank you to Valley View Pet Hospital in Burnville, MN, especially Kaytlin) for taking such amazing care of Zoey.  She was able to come home at night, only because she kept chewing her IV out, and refused to wear an E-collar.  A technician had to constantly watch her, so she was given free-reign of the clinic.  They fell in love with her and were all ‘pulling’ for her.

Zoey was also treated for hook worms.

The reality of Zoey’s medical situation is very grim.  As I mentioned in the previous post, she has Renal disease and it’s incurable.  There is no treatment.  She is on a special diet, which she detests, but really it doesn’t help her.  The vet has given Zoey up to a year to live, and that is being generous.  Her Renal disease is so advanced that she can’t even walk outside without laying down.  She has only eaten a small amount of food since we have had her.  We encourage her to drink water.  And more water.  And then some more!  We have found that she loves chicken, so guess what?!  We are also feeding her chicken!

We have seen little ‘sneak peaks’ of what a 2-year-old-Zoey should act like.  Our resident dog, Buddy, ran to the door, and it surprised Zoey.  She pounced at Buddy, hoping to play!  But after a few short minutes, she tires and has to lay down.  These little ‘peaks’ of Zoey is part of what keeps me going.  I know she wants to be a puppy SO BAD, if only her body didn’t fail her.

The vet assured me she is not in any pain.  She just needs to eat and drink.  Eventually her kidney’s will cause her to be so tired, she won’t be able to function.  I force myself to not think about that now, because it only causes me pain.  She is the most gentle creature I have ever met.  I feel so honored that I am taking care of her.
