Calling all fans of senior dogs: we have a sweetheart for you! Honey is a 10 year-old, purebred Golden Retriever and a retired breeding gal looking for her retirement home. Honey is dark red in color and weighs 66 pounds. She is very mellow and enjoys laying around, however she is still very healthy and youthful despite her age. Honey lived outdoors, so she is not technically house trained, but she has not had any accidents in the week that we have had her. Honey is very obedient and we were told she likes to hunt and swim. She is crate trained, walks nice on a leash, doesn't jump up on people, and loves snuggles and pets.

Honey had her initial vet visit last week and was brought up to date on shots. Her fecal, heartworm, and tick borne disease tests were all negative. We are treating her for an ear infection in both ears. Her lab work looked fine. The vet found a mammary tumor, which is common in older unsprayed females. She also has a mass on her skin by her right hip. Both of these masses will be removed when she is spayed on September 28th  and will be sent for testing. Honey has been quite itchy, but her skin and coat look great, so we are trying some over the counter allergy medication to see if that helps.

Honey has a high prey drive and should not live with cats. Honey also has a history of not getting along with other female dogs. Since arriving at our home, she has been growling and showing her teeth at both our male and female dogs. We have been keeping her tethered to one of us so we can correct this behavior and provide constant supervision with the other dogs. She seems to be nervous about all the changes and finds comfort in being near people but wants space from the other dogs. As she has settled in we have been giving her more freedom and our dogs have already learned that she needs space. We will continue to be cautious, but so far we have learned to coexist. For this reason, we believe that Honey would do best as an only dog in her Furever Home.

Merry Christmas from Honey! Another picture of her in front of the Christmas tree since that's her favorite place to lay. All she wants for Christmas this year is a family to call her own.

A big thank you to John West and Chance 14-401 for the holiday icons and for your support of RAGOM. Thanks for thinking of this sweet girl. Hoping all of our RAGOM fans have a blessed holiday season!

It's been too long since we updated on Honey. The last couple weeks have been uneventful. Honey has been her usual laid-back self. We put up our Christmas tree and found out that Honey loves to lay right next to it. She is so easy to have around; she's calm, she loves to relax and get pets, she walks nice on a leash, she rarely barks, and she's very obedient. Honey is eager to please and is looking for a family to share her senior years with. We know you will love her as much as we do!

Honey is still here in Fargo waiting for her Furever Family to find her! She likes the snow we had this week. Like most Golden Retrievers, she likes to roll around in the snow and stick her nose it. Honey's itching increased once she was off the prednisone for awhile so now she is getting prednisone every other day for the time being. The cost of the prednisone is about $20 a month.

We had a scuffle this week while we had a family member's dog staying with us. It happened while we were dishing up dog food and it is unclear who started it, but fortunately no one required vet attention. Honey and our 2 resident dogs have not had any issues at mealtime prior to this incident, so we think it was related to having a new dog in the mix.

If you would like to learn more about Honey, let your placement advisor know or e-mail applicationatragom [dot] org if you would like apply. Honey would love to meet you!

Sponsors sure know how to make a girl feel special! We would like to thank Bonnie, Clark, and Randi for sponsoring Honey! Thank you so much for your generosity and for welcoming sweet Honey into RAGOM. Honey is hoping she will get to meet you someday.

Honey wants me to mention that November is known as 'Adopt a Senior Dog' month. Having adopted a senior dog before, we know firsthand how great these older dogs are. Just because Honey is 10 years old does not mean she is elderly or sick. It means she is a well behaved, laid back sweetheart. Ideally, Honey has a good few years left that she would love to devote to a special family. Honey is still very active and mobile, she jumps on to the couch and into our SUV and enjoys long walks, but she also likes long naps. Don't forget that we know she likes to swim and hunt! I can assure you that Honey will be a lovable and loyal companion for the rest of her years. Even if Honey isn't a good fit for you, please consider adopting a senior dog. They need a loving home, too!

A great big thank you to Ruth H. for sponsoring Honey in memory of your beloved Corky! We appreciate your kindness and generosity, helping dogs like Honey wouldn't be possible without people like you. THANK YOU! Honey sends you lots of hugs and kisses!

Honey was showing off her festive bandana on Halloween. Doesn't she look darling? (she's in the middle.) She enjoyed greeting all the trick-or-treaters at the door. She was very interested in the candy bowl and gently took a couple pieces but dropped them immediately when she knew she was busted. She's such a good girl!

Honey's itchiness subsided while she was on the prednisone. Once she finished the prednisone she started itching again, but not as much as before, so we are going to continue the oatmeal baths and see how she does with the cooler weather. Honey is a total sweetheart and is looking for a family to help her enjoy her Golden years. If you have another dog and are interested in Honey, just know that she will probably take a couple weeks to warm up. Let RAGOM know if you would like to learn more about Honey!

Honey had her follow-up appointment at the vet this week where she had her sutures removed and also started prednisone to help with her itchiness. Hopefully the first hard frost we received will also help to decrease her allergies. We are trying a medicated oatmeal shampoo as well. As you can tell from the pictures, Honey wasn't too excited about the bath and new shampoo. We have started to see some relief, paws crossed that it continues. Honey continues to get along well with both of our resident dogs. She seeks out attention when she wants it, but is perfectly ok with hanging out by herself. Honey has not had any accidents, so it's safe to say that she is house trained. A typical Golden Retriever, she loves being included and loves going for car rides (she is a well behaved passenger). Honey likes to go for walks and walks great on a leash. She is such a wonderfully mellow and sweet girl that acts younger than her age. Now that Honey is spayed and had her (non-cancerous) masses removed, she has a new lease on life and is anxiously waiting for her forever family!

We received great news-both of the tumors removed from Honey are benign! Her recovery is going well and she is getting along great with our resident dogs.

Honey has made a lot of progress! She is getting a long with our two resident dogs, so she now has free roam when we are home. She has not had any accidents in the house, and she continues to be sweet and snuggly. Honey spent the weekend with another RAGOM volunteer while we were out of town. She really enjoyed being the only pet there and getting lots of attention! She did well, although some unexpected fireworks caused her to hide under the bed. She also rides great in the car. Honey is the dog on the far right. She is such a pretty girl.Honey had surgery on Monday to get spayed and to remove two lumps. One lump was a mammary tumor and the other was a mass by her right hip, which was tested before surgery and found to be melanoma. We are still waiting for the final pathology reports on both of these lumps. Despite the surgery, Honey seems to be feeling pretty good and will spend the week quietly recovering at home. We will keep you posted! Here is a picture of groggy Honey after surgery. Look at those lips!
