Angel's name sums up her personality. She is such a special dog and deserves a special forever home. I don't think I've met a sweeter Golden Retriever!

Angel is a 7-year-old, purebred, spayed female Golden Retriever. Angel was an outside dog until she came into RAGOM's care. Now she is learning all about air conditioning! She loves it! Angel also loves balls and bones. She will growl at other dogs to tell them to stay away from her toy, but it never goes further than that. She's loved all the kids she's met and she's fine with other dogs, but she wants to interact with humans more than dogs. Angel also has the most luxurious, dark-red fur. She looks great now that she's been vetted and bathed. Oh, and there have been no accidents in the house, so she appears to be house-trained, although it's always us telling her when to go outside.

Remember that question on the home visit that asked "Would you consider a dog with special needs?" Well, Angel has a couple of special needs, but really, they are no big deal. She's a super easy foster. When she arrived, Angel weighed in at a whopping 105 pounds! She should probably be no more than 70 pounds, possibly less. We have been walking Angel around the block, and sometimes, we need to rest partway home. (It's about .65 miles.) She loves getting out and about for her walks! This morning, she was almost prancing and trotting she was so excited. With the heat we've had, we've only been able to walk her once a day in the cool morning. After that, we just take her out in the backyard for brief walks. The heat and humidity is too much for a dog who is this obese. Angel hasn't been eating very well since coming to us, so I imagine her weight will start dropping quite rapidly. Kibble and green beans just aren't her idea of what a dog should be fed. :-) In spite of her weight, Angel will walk right up the ramp into the back of our SUV and rides calmly. She just slides down the ramp to get out, but that might have more to do with her other special need.

The other special need is that Angel is blind. She will be going to a specialist to make sure that her eyes aren't causing her any pain, but we're pretty sure she can't see at all. It's remarkable how well Angel uses her hearing and scent to get around. It's what makes us question whether or not she is fully blind. She has our house and yard figured out quite well. She can even do the 2 front steps! We haven't tried a whole staircase yet.

Angel came to us with her daughter, Little Girl 15-197 . Angel needs a companion dog or a human who is around all the time since she seems to get overwhelmingly lonely, or maybe scared, when she's alone. She will bark or whine, but is getting more comfortable every day.

Ideally, Angel's forever family would adopt both Angel and Little Girl. At the very least, it would be best if they had a confident, empathetic dog in their household. The family needs to be committed to continuing her exercise and weight loss program. She doesn't exercise much on her own, so frequent walks are required.

Come meet these wonderful girls at Goldzilla on September 13th!

Updates

Friday, September 25, 2015

Hello, RAGOM-land! It's Angel writing. Sorry for the delay in updating all of my fans! So much has happened in the last couple of weeks. I eat great, but in just 2 weeks, I lost 3 pounds! I am so spunky now! I search out balls, bones, and other toys to play with. Plus, foster mom and foster dad take me for two walks every day. I even manage to walk 3/4 of a mile at a time now. Life here is good.

A couple of Sundays ago, I got to go to a park to an event called Goldzilla! It was SO much fun! Foster mom and foster dad were busy working at the event, so I got to hang out with other RAGOM fosters. I met so many people and they all loved me! I got to walk in the foster parade, then meet more people at the foster showcase tent. At the event, there was a foster fan board where people could donate money towards a specific foster dog. Since I am such a star, I got THREE blue paw prints! THANK YOU to my donors. That means so much to me. It was a great day. (I saw my son Big Boy at the event, but he thinks I'm boring, so we didn't do more than sniff at each other.)

That same week, on Wednesday, I went for a car ride with only foster dad. We went to a place where there were really nice people. Foster dad told me that they looked at my eyes and determined that I am totally blind and there is nothing they can do to fix that, but I'm not in any pain. If I could talk, I could have told them all of that.

It was just two days later that some people drove a long ways (or so they said) just to meet me and Little Girl. I was on my best behavior and charmed them (that's so easy for me to do). It was raining, so we didn't want to go for a long walk, but I showed them how I maneuver through the house and yard, then we went for a short walk down the street. These people were impressed at how well I get around. Foster mom and foster dad said they love me very much, but these new people want to adopt me and keep me FOREVER! I'm SO happy to have found a home where they will take awesome care of me and let Little Girl come with me, too. It's time to change my status to ADOPTED!

On Monday, we took Angel (and Little Girl) to one of our favorite lakes. Most Golden Retrievers love to swim, but we wanted to know if it was true for Angel, so we could let potential adopters know. She LOVED it! Foster Mom and Dad were worried about her due to her weight and her blindness. Since Angel is heavy, she seemed to float really well. :-) We kept a long leash on her and could give her a slight tug in our direction if she didn't seem to be following our voice. She did better than we thought and we didn't need to worry so much. Since Angel gets so warm and tired on walks due to her weight, swimming is a wonderful way for her to burn calories without overheating.

Angel has been a great houseguest. She may dig a slight hole to get cool, but I'm good at planting grass seed. No problems at all in the house. No accidents and no chewing of inappropriate things. She's a gem. She loves to walk between your legs for full body-petting and will circle around to do it again and again.

Watch for Angel on KARE11 on Saturday, September 12th, around 8:30 a.m.

Then, come and meet this special girl at Goldzilla on Sunday, September 13th.
