Hello RAGOM families, meet Jake, a very sweet PB male. He turned 4 in November, weighs 62 pounds, with a beautiful red coat. He is neutered, UTD on vaccinations, has a microchip, and has a clean bill of health. Jake was lovingly surrendered to RAGOM by a family that had a sudden change in living situation and felt that he needed more room to play and exercise. He is an affectionate boy who longs for a loving family, playing ball and stability in his life.

Jake has been a joy to have in our home. He loves to be around humans and is wonderful with children. He came from a home with 3 boys and is currently living with 2 young girls, 18 months and 4 years old. He adores them, allowing them to play ball, feed him treats, pet and play with him.

Jake has great manners in our home. He is gentle, sits, does not counter surf or take food from our young children (even though the opportunity presents itself often) and has shown no signs of guarding. He knows the difference between the kid toys and his toys. He love car rides and does really well in the car. When we are away from the home, Jake stays in our 4-season porch with the door shut. He does well with this for short or longer workday stints. I imagine he would also do fine having free roam.

At first Jake struggled to walk on a leash without pulling. He has made significant progress walking and running with a gentle leader. We run Jake once a day and he loves his exercise. We do not have a fenced in yard so as a foster, not yet ready to train on the electric fence, Jake has been enjoying sitting outside on a tether, taking in the smells and getting fresh air. He does well with this but I can tell he would love more freedom overtime, once a relationship and boundaries are formed. We have been taking him to a fenced in area for him to run free and play fetch. He loves to play ball and frisbee.

Jake will need a loving family that is willing to invest time and dedication to helping him work through his fear of other dogs. This was shocking to us as he is so wonderful with humans! Per his surrendering family, this is a new fear that Jake has exhibited after living with another dog for a short period of time as his family transitioned to a new home. The family is unsure of what may have happened with the other dog in the home, while Jake was visiting. He shows signs of aggression (growling, lifting his ghouls) to warn other dogs. He will literally hug your leg if another dog is present. We have experienced this a few times since he has been in our home. At the vet he encountered another dog and was very reluctant, growling. After having multiple meetings with our neighbor dog, he has his guard up but has become less aggressive as the meetings go on. When out on walks around the neighborhood, he does great with other dogs on leashes walking by, it is just when the other dog gets real close or sniffs him. Jake would do best in a home with no other animals, as well as an environment where dogs aren’t running freely, until he is able to gain trust and work through his fears.

Jake is an incredible dog! He is a loving, playful, companion that will be the greatest buddy for a family! If you are interested in Jake, please let your placement advisor know.

So Mom told me I needed to send in an update since I just had my one year "Gotcha Day" on 1/17/16, not sure what that means but I did get lots of treats and a new ball, so must be something good.

Well since the last update we have celebrated the holidays and most importantly my 5th Birthday! Mom and Dad said other than getting some white on my face I am still very much a puppy. My birthday was great! I got to go on a long car ride, have a birthday cup cake from the doggy bakery, and then Mom and Dad gave me a chew stick and a new stuffed deer. I love my stuff animals.

The week after my birthday Mom and Dad decided we need family photos for Christmas Cards this year. I had to go to the groomer for a bath and a hair cut, but Mom said I was very handsome in my photos, she even sent a few with this update. The one where I was paying attention was front and center on the Christmas card......but I saw two people walking and I wanted to go say hi, made for a good picture.

I was a little worried last month when Mom and Dad started packing their bags but Dad told me we where going to go visit Grandma, Granddad in Indiana. I supervised from the bed to make sure they remembered to pack everything including my toys! Mom then reminded me that I would get to see Addie, Grandma's Golden. Mom said she had gotten bigger but she was still the same. Well after a long car ride, my favorite, we got to Indiana. It took me a bit remember Addie but once I did we were fine, except when she tried to take my toys. I don't share well but we are working on that. I even got to meet my cousin Doey the yellow lab, she just turned 3. We all did well together esp when mom got out treats.....did I mention we are all food motivated. I got lots of new toys for Christmas and Mom said I might have too many b/c they don't all fit in my box anymore.....I solved that problem by leaving them all over the house. You never know when you might need a squeaking head-hog at3:00AM.

While in Indiana I got to spend lots of time with Mom, Grandma and Addie; taking many trips to a local store where I got to go in and they would give me treats......I told Mom I liked this store and we needed to come back. After 10 days in Indiana we went for a long car ride again and I decided Dad's shoulder made a good pillow. It was good to get home, after which I claimed the bed as mine and fell asleep......Addie had way too much energy all the time and wore me out. Don't I look so sweet and innocent when I am sleeping.

Well time to go, I just heard Mom ask if I wanted to go play ball. Silly Mom you never have to ask that I am a retriever and fetching balls is what I do best.

We still can’t believe Jake has been with us for almost 9 months now. He has settled in very well and knows our routine very well. In the past 9 months we have completed obedience training with him and worked with him on being comfortable with other dogs. It is still a work in progress but he has made friends with Sklyer, the Spaniel that lives next door.

Jake got to go to Indiana to visit his human grandparents on his Mom’s side and there was nothing he loved more than the long car ride as you can see from some of the pictures. There is not much more he likes more then riding in the car. Actually I take that back what he loves more than anything is a good game of fetch, freebie or ball, he loves them all. Now that it is starting to cool off we find that Jake is like an energizer bunny, he just keeps going and going when it comes to retrieving the ball.

But really there is nothing Jake loves more than being a 70 pound lap dog. He loves to sit with his Dad when we get home. His newest thing is to put his head on the bed at night with the big brown eyes looking at us until we cave and invite him up. Needless to say we cave every time with those eyes.

Last weekend Jake got to meet his aunt Addie, Grandma’s new Golden Retriever Puppy. It took Jake a bit to get used to her but then he decided he liked her. They played all weekend, even though Jake had to put her in her place a few times especially when Addie thought Jake’s tail was a chew toy or when he just got tired of her antics and sat on her. Overall they did well and wore each other out. I think he enjoyed having a playmate for the weekend, but he really loves being the only child.

We can’t thank RAGOM enough for bringing Jake into our lives as there is never a dull minute with him. Well I am getting the “get off your computer and let’s go play ball” look which I know too well.

We have had the PLEASURE of having Jake with our family since December 24. After talking with the previous foster regarding his nervousness around other dogs we felt it best to move him to my home where I could spend more time with Jake and introduce him to other dogs. Over the past 3 weeks I have been able to introduce him to the neighbors dog 4-5 times. I did not see any aggressive behavior other than both sniffing each other and trying to see whose paw was stronger to put on each other. The introductions started about 10 days of being in our home. This is when I could tell from his eating and day to day routines he felt secure and settled in with our family. The dog we did introductions with is a large dog about 30 pounds heavy than Jake. He did have another opportunity to say a quick hello to and share some smells with 2 other dogs walking by our front yard. Again, I didn't see any snarls or aggression. I think when Jake gets settled in and feels secure he lets his guard down. I know he is very interested in other dogs and would probably pull you on his leash to go meet another dog on a walk. But that is another area where I believe he can really benefit in- obedience training.

Now on to the good stuff about Jake. He has been in our home for almost 3 weeks. He is so sweet and well-behaved in the house. We have 2 teenage daughters that he can't give enough kisses to. Jake has the total "Golden nudge" down to perfection. So well that if you stop petting him he barks at you! The first 2 weeks he wasn't a big eater but is now eating on a regular schedule. He is only 60 pounds and a medium frame. My daughters can pick him up and carry him from room to room- yes, he is spoiled! You can also tell his surrendering owners spent time with him playing fetch. He again has the typical Golden trait of always carrying something(dog toys) around in his mouth. He knows sit and we have taught him shake- yes, he loves treats. Jake is so very smart and could really use obedience training- I believe he would learn how to walk better on a leash (right now he is like the road runner) and to socialize with other dogs. I would bet he would graduate first in his class, I have that much confidence in his ability to be number 1!!!!!! He needs his exercise so we take him to a large safe area to run free. His favorite part is going for a car ride.

We have also been grooming him. Again, over the past weeks the more you are consistent with him the more he feels comfortable. I can now trim all 4 paws in one sitting. Another plus is we allow free roam in our house. The first week we used the baby gate in the mudroom. He didn't try to jump over it but barked a few times cause he wanted to be right by us. We do have a kennel downstairs that he will go in without a problem if you feel this is needed at first in your home. He now sleeps in our girls beds and came with his original blankie and bed from his SO home.

As you can see from all his pictures- he is a true love bug!!!!! If someone doesn't come to meet him soon I won't be able to let him go.
