It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that I had to help Zadie 14-389 to the Rainbow Bridge on Monday, Feb. 5th.

She started having difficulty going up the steps a few months ago so the Vet put her on Carprofen for Arthritis.  Last week she started having diarrhea and just wasn't herself.  Her abdomen seemed bloated to me, so I took her to the Vet on Thursday.  He found a hard mass larger than a grapefruit near her liver and spleen.  Looking at the x-ray he said it was probably  hemangiosarcoma.  He said he was also concerned with bone spurs on 5 of her vertabrae and said she is in pain from those.  We discussed our options and he said he could try to remove the mass to maybe give her aother 6 months.  I told him I wanted to think about it, but then over the weekend she quit eating and started throwing up.  I made rice and chicken, but she threw that up too.  She got so weak, so I brought her in on Monday to set her free from her pain.  She was only 8 yrs old!

Please welcome Zadie, a gorgeous 5 yr-old, 62 lb female English Cream Golden Retriever.  Zadie is spayed, microchipped, and UTD on her shots.  She was positive for Lymes and Anaplasma and is on medication for it.  Her owner got her from a breeder a year ago after Zadie had a litter of puppies.  The breeder said Zadie has hip dysplasia so she couldn’t breed her anymore.   She shows no issues while running or jumping, but might as she gets older.  Zadie was surrendered to RAGOM because she killed her family’s pet chinchilla and some chickens on their 15 acre farm where she had free roam.  Zadie gets along well with both male and female dogs.  When she was at the Vet, we brought her by the office cat and she just walked right past it.  Of course, at that time all she had on her mind was going home!

Since Zadie was an only dog, so now she always wants to be first for everything…. Eating, getting treats, going outside, and getting petted.  She is strong and can be very persistent trying to get what she wants.  We are working on taking turns and being patient.  All of my dogs eat at the same time and they all respect each other’s space.  She sits immediately, without being told, when I have food or a treat.  Zadie gets startled easily by quick movements or loud noises.  She is a very smart dog and just wants to be loved.  I would keep her if I could have another dog!

Zadie was not fenced in or on a tie out on their 15 acre farm and her surrendering owner said she likes to chase cars.  I live on a dead end street so not many cars go past here, but I have seen her run to the fence barking as a car drove by.  I can redirect her by calling her name and telling her to leave it, but her new family needs to work with her on the car chasing.

If you are looking for a wonderful family dog and want to meet Zadie, please let your placement advisor know.
