I would like to introduce you to this gorgeous boy! His name is Chester, and he came into RAGOM after he was hit by a car and his family could no longer give him the love and care he needed. Chester suffered a minor injury to his leg when he was hit by the car, but he is almost all healed up and ready for his forever family!

Chester is a 2-year-old Golden Retriever mix. From all indications on his prior records, he is a Golden Retriever and Siberian Husky mix. Chester weighs 67 pounds and is full-grown, although the vet said he should gain a bit more weight—I don’t think he’ll mind! :-)

Chester gets along very well with our 11-month-old female resident Golden. He isn’t up for a lot of play right now, as his leg is still on the mend, but they do enjoy being together and lounging around inside; unfortunately, it’s been so cold that they haven’t been able to go out and play in the snow too much!

Chester loves children, but he still has a tendency to jump on them, which can be a problem with younger children. I think he would do best in a family with children ages 7 and up until he learns not to jump. Chester also chased the cats in his previous home, so he would do best in a family with no cats. He loves to play with other dogs, but he would also be content as an only dog.

Chester also has a bit of a problem with his wire crate. He managed to escape from it twice during the first two days he was in our home, but, thanks to some helpful advice from other RAGOM volunteers, we have slowly been working on associating his crate with happy things. His crate is now located in a room where we spend a lot of our time; we have also been feeding him all of his meals in his crate and playing games that end with him receiving treats in his crate. He will currently go into his crate for short periods of time on his own. He is still curious about many things, and still occasionally gets into things he shouldn't, so he cannot have free roam of the house when we are gone yet. Chester would do best in a forever family where someone is home for most of the day.

Chester knows the commands “sit” and “down” very well. He sits well for treats and when we are getting his food--we are still working on waiting for food and at the door. He takes treats VERY gently, and has a very gentle mouth. He is curious in the kitchen, but has not exhibited any counter-surfing behaviors.

I think it would be best for Chester to have a physical fence. Chester only comes when he is called about 50% of the time, but he is completely house trained. He did have two accidents on his first day with us, but he was simply becoming acclimated to his new surroundings. He has not had an accident inside since then, and he rings the “Poochie Bells” on the door when he needs to go outside. Chester could use a little bit more work walking on the Gentle Leader; he does pretty well right now, but this cold weather has kind of put a damper on our walks! Chester has one of the most loving and gentle personalities that a dog can have. He is always looking to be somewhere near people, and he is very eager to please. Chester can’t wait to meet his forever family and show them how truly wonderful he is!

I'm so happy to report that Chester found his forever home today. He is going to be living the rest of his life as a part of the absolutely fantastic "P" family with a big 4-legged brother, Piper, there to show him the ropes. His forever family has an extensive amount of experience with rescue dogs, as well as dogs who struggle with some anxiety. RAGOM has some fantastic adopters, and the "P" family is no exception.

Thank you to the Sioux Falls shelter that took Chester in, to RAGOM for pulling him from the shelter and helping him get the tools he needed to be such a wonderful dog, and to the "P" family for adopting Chester and embracing all of his quirks. You are all fantastic and we couldn't be more grateful for you. Congrats on a wonderful life, Chester!

Hi, friends! It's Chester here, and I'd just like to fill you in on my adventures over the past couple of weeks. First, I went to a meet-and-greet in Iowa City at a really neat little store called Leash On Life! Lots of people came to give me treats and pets; I was a REALLY good boy, and a lot of people said they loved me and thought I was beautiful! After the meet-and-greet, I stayed at a RAGOM volunteer's house when Foster Mom and Foster Dad went to a wedding. This was the first time I'd stayed anywhere outside of my comfort zone since I started my anxiety medication, so FM and FD were a little worried about how I would do. I'm not so sure why they were worried, because I was a very good boy! I was a little nervous, but can you blame me?! They had 4 other dogs and a huge backyard that was calling my name! I'm doing so well here, but I'd love to find my family.

Would you like to be my forever family? Do you have the patience to give me that will allow me time to transition and settle into your house? I've been at my foster home for four months now, and FM and FD say that I am an absolutely wonderful dog. I always hear them say, "It's been so incredibly rewarding to watch Chester flourish into an amazing dog. He's low-key, intelligent, and pretty mellow once he adjusts to your lifestyle!" It may take me a little bit longer to settle into your routines and your ways of life, so it may take some patience from the both of us, but I promise, if you'll be my family, I'll love you and care for you forever and ever!

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. It's Chester here, and I'm here to tell you that if you live in or around the Iowa City, Iowa area, and would like to come meet me, then you should come to the meet-and-greet at Leash on Life in Iowa City this Saturday from 11:00-3:00! I will be there and I would love to meet you!

Nothing much is new in my life right now. I'd really love to find my forever home, so maybe that will happen soon. I can only hope that it will, because I am such a good boy that Foster Mom and Dad can't believe I haven't found my forever family yet.

A few notes about me for anyone who may need a refresher on my needs and wants:

  • I would love a fenced-in yard, but it's not required. I do need a good walk or jog every day, but I don't require a ton of exercise. However, you will need to take me out to go potty on a leash, as I can't be trusted off-leash at all right now. I could also go potty on a tie-out, but you shouldn't leave me out there unattended because I do have a bit of a prey drive.
  • I love kids. FM and FD have a friend who has a 1.5-year-old, and he's my buddy. Foster Mom thinks I must have lived with kids in the past, because I really like to play with them.
  • If you're a runner or jogger, or even someone who loves daily walks, then I am your man. I run with Foster Dad for up to 5 miles, and we have a great time. I would love to be someone's exercise partner!
  • I adore my 1-year-old Golden Retriever foster sister. If you have another dog in your house, then I'd love to meet him or her! However, I don't need a ton of playtime, so I'd do well in a house with an older, more mellow dog as well. Sometimes my foster sister gets a little crazy with all of her energy!
  • I do still need to be in a crate if I am left alone without another dog in my house. I need to be in the crate to keep myself safe, but FM and FD think that with some training, I could definitely learn to have free roam of at least a room of the house.
  • Cats are still up in the air. It totally depends on the cat and whether or not the cat has lived with dogs. I don't try to hurt cats at all, but I really want to play with them, so I will sometimes chase them if they run from me.
  • I need someone who is willing to give me one pill every morning to help me be less anxious. Please offer this pill to me in cheese or peanut butter; I will love you forever and ever.

That's about all from my neck of the woods. Hopefully I will see you on Saturday!

Love, Chester

Hi, everyone! I'm just here to say hello and show you how adorable and fun-loving I am, so Foster Mom is sending in a couple of pictures she took of me tonight. I really love it here at my foster home, but I know I'm not in my forever home right now and I guess I'm not just quite sure why nobody has come to take me to my forever home yet. Foster Mom and Foster Dad have talked to a few really nice people who think I'm pretty neat, but nobody has come to see me yet. Would you like to come see me? I promise I'm a really good boy who loves getting pets (especially on my belly; those are the best ones!) and I really, really love cuddling up right next to you. FM and FD love me, and I love them, but they know I deserve my forever home, too.

Do you want to know what I really need? I would love it if someone would teach me how to play "fetch!" I don't quite understand what Foster Mom wants me to do when she throws my ball all the way across the yard... I'm so confused, but she calls it "fetch!" Would you be able to teach me this "fetch" game?! It looks like it would be fun, but I'm not quite sure how it works. I would also love it if someone would take me on walks. I love walks, and I'm getting so much better at walking on a leash. Foster Mom still uses my Gentle Leader, but I probably don't need it. I don't mind it, though, so I let her put it on me without a fuss.

Well, that's about all I have for you guys today. Remember, I'm not asking for too much from you if you'd like to be my forever home. I just need someone who is a little patient when it comes to my transition into your home (because it may take me a couple of weeks to really settle in), someone who will teach me how to play fetch, and someone who will give me lots and lots of belly rubs. I'd also love it if someone would think about taking me to obedience training... Foster Mom says I'm very smart and would thrive in obedience school; I think it sounds like lots of fun! Do you want to be my forever family? If you think you might, you should contact your placement adviser and let them know so Foster Mom or Foster Dad can talk to you. I know we live in central Iowa, and that's a long way away, but please don't let that sway you from coming to see me. I promise I'll be worth it!

Hi, folks! Chester here again; I'm here to tell you that my Foster Mom and Foster Dad did something super special for me and my foster sister! They put up this thing called a fence, and they let me run around without a tie-out or a leash and I can run and play all over the yard! As you can see in my picture, I'm really happy about this fence business!

Other than that, no news to report here! Hopefully everyone is staying cool and happy like me!

Sunday, May 25, 2014

Happy Saturday, everypawdy! It's me, Chester! I got to meet some really nice people today, and they gave me some pets and some treats and they talked with Foster Mom and Foster Dad about me. They talked about taking me to their house, but after they talked for a while, they all decided that it might not be the best for all of us, so I'm going to stay with my foster parents for a little while longer. They said they are okay with that because I'm just so adorable and fun-loving!

Guess what?! Foster Dad FINALLY realized how much I love to run. My foster sister is only one, so she cannot go running yet, but I went with FD each Sunday for the last 3 weekends and we had a BLAST! Foster Dad runs about 3.5 to 4 miles and I would really like to keep going after that, but he makes me stop because he thinks that's far enough. Silly guy. Anyone out there who needs a running partner?!

I also truly think I'm a lap dog, as seen in the photo. I like to use FM as my pillow. She sometimes tries to move me, but I am very stealthy and I sneak my way back up there. I don't even think she notices.

I'm not sure what it means, but foster mom and dad told me to tell you all that I'm "available" again! If you'd like to come meet me, let your placement advisor know and maybe we can have some fun together!

Just a quick update from Chester. It was close to 90 in central Iowa yesterday, so we busted out the pink plastic swimming pool and attempted to cool off. Chester was in heaven! We haven't seen him in water before, minus the bath (which he isn't a huge fan of), so we weren't sure how he'd react; let's just say he wasn't at all willing to share that pool. :-)

Chester will be meeting his potential adoptive family on the 24th. They have a trip planned and Chester just started a new medicine, so we wanted to make sure we observed him for a bit before he made a transition into a forever home. Cross your paws for Chester so he can hopefully go live an amazing life with some pretty special people!

Sunday, April 27, 2014

Hi, guys! It's me, Chester! I'm just here to give you an update on my adventures! First things first...I got to go on a mini-vacation and stay with some very nice people last weekend when Foster Mom and Foster Dad went on a trip. Do you guys remember how I was pretty afraid and anxious when I first got to my foster home? Well, I got pretty anxious when I stayed with my sitters this past weekend as well. FM and FD thought I would do okay since I have been doing so well at my foster home, but I still felt pretty nervous since I wasn't in a familiar setting. Foster Mom and Dad took me back to the vet, and the vet gave me some medicine and she said I might feel better during times of increased stress or transitions/change if I take this stuff. You see, I've had a lot of change in my short life. I was adopted from a shelter, then I got hit by a car and surrendered again, and then RAGOM so graciously took me in and now I live in my foster home. Every time something changes for me, I get pretty nervous that I'm going to be left alone again, so the hope is that this medicine will help me understand that I don't have to worry about people abandoning me ever again. I do want to let you know that the minute I came back to my foster home, I was totally relaxed and happy to be home. I also don't mind going to unfamiliar settings if Foster Mom or Foster Dad are with me; it's only when I'm left alone in somewhere that I'm not used to. It might take a few weeks for me to adjust when I get to my forever home, but if you're just patient with me, I promise I will be an amazing dog! Foster Mom and Foster Dad said they are so happy they met me. They use the words "I love you, Chester" a lot--then they give me lots of pets. All I want in my forever home is a lot of pets and for people to tell me they love me...oh, and some treats. :)

The vet said my medicine might take a few weeks to help me out, and I want to make sure that I'm feeling comfortable when I meet my potential forever family, so FM and FD said I don't get to meet them right away. I have to wait a few more weeks, but that's okay--I'm excited to meet them and see if they want to take me home to live with them!

I really want to give a huge thank you to RAGOM for supporting me and giving me a chance. RAGOM has done a lot for me: first they got my leg X-rayed after I came into their care, and that was very expensive, then they supported me when I had to go back to the vet last week and talk to that nice lady about how to make myself less anxious. If you are looking at sponsoring a dog, please consider sponsoring me. RAGOM has done so much for me, and they're helping me become an even more amazing dog than I already am.

Until next time, I'll be lounging in my favorite chair and playing with my awesome foster sister. Thanks for thinking of me!

Love,

Chester

First of all, thanks so much to Shiloh 13-176 for Chester's Spring Icon! Just a quick reminder to anyone who would like to meet Mr. Chester that he will be at Chuck and Don's in Edina from 3:00-5:00 this Saturday! He's hoping to meet some pretty special people who think he's pretty neat, so cross your paws for him!

The only other update from Chester's world is a quick, rather humorous story. As you can see in the picture, Chester clearly wasn't too thrilled when he discovered that the clementine he snagged out of Foster Mom's lunch box was NOT a new squeaky ball. Who can resist that innocent face? :-)

Chester is looking forward to seeing lots of new people at Chuck and Don's--he can't wait to meet you! Until then, Chester is resting up so he's all ready to go!

Sunday, April 6, 2014

Chester has a some fun news to share! We traveled to Foster Mom's parents' house this weekend, which was just fine with Chester--he LOVES to take car rides. FM has a lot of friends in that area, and two of them have cats. FM was a little worried about exposing him to cats at all, as we were told he doesn't do well around cats. Well, much to the surprise of Foster Mom and Foster Dad, Chester didn't bat an eye either time! He looked at the cats both times, but the cats just stared back at him, and he went on his way and continued to sniff around their homes; he paid NO attention to the kitties. We're still thinking Chester should probably go to a home with a more relaxed, dog-savvy cat, but this a big step for Chester.

One of the best things we've discovered about fostering is watching these significant milestones develop. Chester came to us from a shelter where he was surrendered due to the fact that he was hit by a car. He was understandably scared and nervous, and he was still in quite a bit of pain. Over the course of the past 6 weeks, we have watched that same scared and anxious boy blossom into a well-adjusted, friendly, and loyal companion.

Chester has so much to offer his forever family:

  • Crate trained for a full 8- to 9-hour work day.
  • Doesn't require a physical fence.
  • Kid friendly (tested with kids ages 3+).
  • Great candidate for obedience, agility, or therapy work.
  • Good with other dogs. But that's not required, either.
  • Would make a great running partner.
  • Still young, but he's past his "puppy" stage.

Chester loves to gaze out the window. He would stare out there, watching people and cars go by, all day long. He doesn't bark or whine when he stares out that window; he sits calmly and gazes for hours. I think sometimes he's wondering when his forever family will finally come meet him; he's so ready to find a family he can bond with and call his own. We absolutely love having him in our home, but we know we are his temporary resting place. If you'd like to come meet his fantastic young boy, contact your placement adviser--he'll be thrilled to meet you.

Monday, March 31, 2014

Hi everyone, Chester here! This weekend, I went to my very first ever meet-and-greet event in Shakopee, Minnesota. It was a really long car ride, and I was a little nervous when we first got there. But after a little while, I settled down and realized the people there were actually there to see me! Can you believe it?! People came to pet me and they gave me lots and lots of treats! There were some pretty nice families there who gave me some very nice pets. As you can see by my picture, the meet-and-greet was pretty tiring. I slept the WHOLE way home!

I liked seeing new people, but if you really want to see the real, gentle, confident "me," you should contact your Placement Advisor and tell them you want to come meet me at my foster home! I'm really comfortable there now, so I'd love to meet you and show myself off!

Thursday, March 27, 2014

Hi there! Just wanted to send a friendly reminder that Chester will be at the Shakopee Chuck and Don's meet-and-greet this Saturday from 11:00-2:00! Come out and see this handsome, friendly, and carefree boy!

I've also included a picture of Chester standing next to our Resident Dog, Sadie. Chester is on the left in this picture. I've had a couple of questions about how big he is in comparison with a typical Golden Retriever. Sadie is 58 pounds, and is on the "smaller side" of a Golden Retriever. Chester is a couple of inches taller than Sadie and weighs 10 pounds more. They play extremely well together, and have lots of fun! :-) Chester can't wait for you to come see him this weekend!

Sunday, March 23, 2014

Hi there, everybody--Chester here! I'm finally getting to write my own update! I am being such a good boy, especially since I've discovered that the more I behave, the more treats I get (though I'm still kind of struggling to figure out this whole "walking on a leash" business. I do pretty well with that thing they call a No-Pull Harness, though). I also think it's important to let you all know that I really like my crate now. I understand that it's my place, and that it keeps me safe when Foster Mom and Dad are gone for the day...but I really, really love to be by my people when I can. Foster Mom and Foster Dad said I could sleep in their bed at night if I wanted to, but with my Foster Sister, Sadie, already up there, it gets pretty crowded. So, I decided the best place for me in the bedroom is on my cozy dog bed right next to Foster Dad's side of the bed. As long as I can see him, I'm just fine!

More good news! I have also gained some weight since I've been eating all of those yummy treats, and I currently weigh 68 pounds. The vet-woman said that was a good place for me to be, and Foster Mom seemed happy about that...I just hope the yummy treats don't go away now!

I also really, really love kids. There are 5- and 8-year-old boys who live next door, and I love to run around and play with them. Sometimes I think about jumping, but I've been doing a really good job lately of keeping my paws on the ground! To be honest, I love other dogs and puppies, but I would also really love to be the only dog in your house, too!

One more bit of good news--I overheard Foster Mom and Dad talking about a long car ride next Saturday to some place called Chuck and Don's in Shakopee, Minnesota. I just know we live in Iowa, so this might be a long ride, but I LOVE to be in the car--so I'm really excited! I really love people, so you can come see me if you'd like--I'll be sure to give you lots of love!

Hello, everyone! Foster Mom, here. We will be taking a trip to Minnesota this weekend to attend a meet-and-greet at Chuck and Don's in Shakopee from 11:00-2:00 on Saturday. We are looking forward to Chester attending his first meet-and-greet! He's still on the prowl for his forever family, so if you've been wanting to meet this special boy, but haven't wanted to travel all the way to central Iowa, this Saturday is your chance! He can't wait to see you!

Monday, March 17, 2014

Hello to all of the Chester fans out there! You'll see above that we have changed Chester's requirements for a fence from "Required" to "Preferred." When Chester first arrived at our home, he was scared and confused, and would often pull toward people or animals in the surrounding yards (or the street). However, after the first 4-5 days in our home, Chester began to realize that he was safe, and that he didn't need to escape. He has been with us for almost a month now, and we have discovered that he would probably be fine in a home without a fence (or a home with an invisible fence--as long as it is introduced properly). We are beginning to boundary train him in our yard (as we do not have a fence yet, either), and he is responding well to this; he is an extremely loyal dog and is very teachable (very food-motivated). However, if Chester were to go to a home without a fence, we would ask his potential adoptive family for an explanation of how they would keep Chester safe while still providing him with the exercise he needs.

Speaking of exercise, Chester doesn't need a ton of it. We go for about a 1 1/2-mile-long walk in the morning before we both leave for work, and then Chester is crated for the entire work day (which is about 8 hours and is a MAJOR improvement for Chester, as he is growing to enjoy being in his crate--as long as there is a Kong in there for him!). When we get home, Chester is let out of his crate, goes to the bathroom outside, and is completely content to come back inside and lay on the couch for the rest of the evening. He is very mellow, and only barks when he needs to go outside or when he wants our Resident Dog to play with him.

I've also included a couple of pictures of Chester doing what he does best--lounging around and smiling. He's such a good boy with a gorgeous coat and an amazing personality. He is still waiting for his forever family to say they'd like to come meet him, so if that person is you, then please contact your Placement Advisor! He can't wait to meet you.

Monday, March 10, 2014

Hi, Chester fans--Foster Mom here! It's been a nice weekend for Mr. Chester. Since the weather is getting nicer, we have been taking more and more walks, and we are discovering just how much Chester loves to be walked. He does very well on a Gentle Leader, and still needs more work with a flat collar. However, we used a No-Pull Harness today, and he walked so well! He likes that much more than the Gentle Leader, and it really limits his pulling on the leash. He was very content and walked right next to me the entire time.

Chester is the kind of dog that truly enjoys exercise and play, but when you need him to settle down, he is the most calm, gentle, and mellow dog. He firmly believes he is a lap dog, so he is full of cuddles and has the "Golden Nudge" down to a science. He's been interacting more with our Resident Dog, and he seems to enjoy playing with her. However, he does enjoy time a fair amount to himself and is very good about letting our RD know when he's finished playing.

Chester's crate training is coming along wonderfully. He still needs to be coaxed into his crate, but once he is inside (we do give him a Kong with peanut butter each time), he lays down contently. He will make a few noises, but they are minimal, and they are decreasing greatly.

Please let your Placement Advisor know if you would like to come meet the wonderful Mr. Chester!

Monday, March 3, 2014

Chester has now been with us for a little over a week, and today he got to meet a couple of little kids (ages 3 and 5), and he did absolutely wonderfully. He did try to jump twice, but each time was told, "Chester, down" and he stopped immediately. Chester does not respond at all to loud noises or sudden movements--he is VERY relaxed and laid-back. I think it's safe to say that he would do well in a home with children of all ages!

We are still working on crate training with Chester. He would probably still do best with someone who is home more often than not, in order to limit his time in the crate. Chester also needs someone who is willing to continue working on crate training with him--this takes commitment, but he is progressing quite well and it will be so beneficial for him in the end!

Chester also made his first visit to Foster Dad's nursing home (where he is the Administrator) today. Chester walked right in, sniffed around for about ten minutes, and proceeded to lay down at the foot of someone's chair. Chester also had his tail run over by someone's wheelchair, and he did not react at all--he simply moved out of the way and laid down in another area. Foster Dad said he was so proud of Chester and that he was very impressed with his temperament.

Otherwise, Chester has just been lounging around, playing with Foster Sister, Sadie, and waiting for this weather to warm up and for someone to take him to his forever home! If Chester looks like a dog you would like to meet, please contact your placement advisor! He would love to meet you!
