Suzie is one of 3 littermates that came into RAGOM together. She was born on Nov 11. Her mother is a purebred Golden Retriever and her father is a German Shorthaired Pointer (with some lab in the mix potentially). She is currently 9 pounds, and has had her initial vet visit and first round of puppy shots. She will be spayed in the coming weeks.

She is mostly a dark black - with splashes of white on her nose, chest, and back paws. I included a rather un-ladylike photo of her on her back, so you could see her markings. By the way, she is sound asleep in that photo.

Suzie has had a very busy and overwhelming few days. Getting used to a new house/pack, being separated from her littermates, walking on a leash . . .

She is a sweet pup. Very active and likes to be in right the middle of things. Not so thrilled with airplanes, helicopters, garbage trucks (welcome to life in the big city, sweetie!), the dishwasher, or the barking dogs next door. But she is pretty adventurous and just needs to get used to these new experiences. She may be wary of loud noises, but it took her less than 4 minutes to figure out a way to emancipate herself from the play yard. And boy, was she impressed with herself!!

Suzie alternates between thinking the resident Golden is her momma or her chew toy. So funny to watch the little one following my adult female around and trying to imitate her. The other evening, they were outside to go to the bathroom, and as soon as my female golden squatted, the puppy squatted right next to her.

She is eating well. And is ignoring all of the "puppy" toys in favor of full-size bones and stuffed toys. She took down her first moose this past Sunday, and is facing off with the tiger and other jungle animals. Smart cookie - she has already figured out sitting (and looking cute) to get a treat.

Housebreaking was going well until last night's wind and snow . . . right now, she isn't so sure about venturing into the new powder. We'll keep working on that. And working on getting her comfortable being in her crate alone.

Suzie is very expressive and not shy about letting you know what she wants. Will be fun to watch her grow . . .

Updates

Suzie (she will be called Sadie by her new family) was adopted yesterday (2/12/14) by the E family. They are a young newlywed couple with lots of happy family dog memories and a good network of doggie playmates for Sadie. We are especially happy that they have some experience with the German Shorthaired Pointer - as this little girl is a bundle of energy.

As you can see from the attached photo, Sadie is growing quickly and ready for a new adventure. No longer the cute little ball of fur . . . she has developed a very distinct personality and it is a great time for her to go to her forever home.

They have already reported that she is settling in and slept well her first night in her new environment. And shared this adorable photo of her on the car ride to her home. Obviously worn out from the excitement of having found the perfect family!!!

Just a few quick updates on Suzie (aka Smudge) . . .

She has fully recovered from her spay procedure and is back to full exercise. This cold is no deterrent to her letting me know when it is time for a walk. She is still a bit of a spaz on the leash, but she gets the basic concept of the walk and mostly stays focused on walking forward.

We visited the vet yesterday (Thursday), and vet was pleased with Suzie's overall health and demeanor. The attached photo shows her in the waiting room - a rare moment of non-activity. She now weighs 16.2 pounds. She is really tall on her legs!

Housebreaking going well. Communication with adult dogs is still a work in progress. As you can see from the photo, my resident dog finally found a good role for the puppy as a pillow!!

Smudge has a few families interested in meeting her, so we will get her a bath and try to get those visits scheduled for this weekend! She needs a very active family that will make sure she gets lots of rigorous excercise and mental stimulation each day.

Our little Suzie has had another busy week investigating an ever expanding world. She continues to be a very active little pup. Here are a few random updates:

  • She was spayed last week and did great. We are still chuckling at the vet's recommendation to "restrict normal activity" for 10 days.
  • Suzie continues to eat well and has gained several pounds - we'll have an accurate weight for you next week after her next vet visit (she'll be getting her next round of puppy shots as well).
  • She loves the snow . . . and is not at all deterred by the cold. She really doesn't seem to notice the temp unless the wind is howling.
  • Suzie has adjusted to the sound of airplanes and traffic, but still won't do her business outside if she hears trains, snow equipment, or barking dogs.
  • She seems to have inherited traits from all of her ancestors - and I am seeing Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, and German Shorthaired Pointer in various measures. She likes to have her people in sight at all times, is starting to get the hang of retrieving (and loves to chew on sticks), and has a great sense of smell.
    • I would suggest that anyone thinking about adopting this precious girl do a quick read on the German Shorthaired Pointer, as she needs a serious amount of exercise to wind her down.
  • Suzie still isn't understanding or taking corrections from adult dogs she meets - she just assumes that biting a dog's face or ears is a normal way to say hello. She will need some help with her manners if she is adopted into a home with other dogs that don't immediately appreciate her enthusiasm for puppy play.
  • Housebreaking is going well, but now that she has figured out what a little bark or whine at the door gets her, she sometimes uses it to just escape into the yard for a romp in the snow (smart!!).

More to come after Suzie has her visit with the vet next week. Please consider giving this sweet, silly, curious baby a home!!

Another busy week in the life of a curious puppy. As you would expect, she is full of energy and spends hours exploring all of the corners of her environment (inside and out). She has discovered that it is wonderfully fun to hide under the furniture and use it as cover to sneak up on the big dogs . . . or to attack someone's unsuspecting foot.

Suzie is also delighted with tennis balls, and since her mouth isn't quite big enough to grasp the ball, she can create quite a game for herself trying to grab it and then chasing it when it rolls away. Her favorite play things for the past week seem to be boots and leashes. Not sure why those are more fun than the dozens of toys lying around on the floor, but there you go.

Her big game hunting continues. This week, she stalked and successfully took down a giraffe.

Suzie made a new friend this week with a standard black poodle that is staying with us. She is quite enamored with her new playmate. They are quite funny together - if she isn't jumping up to grab his ears, she is chasing after him and imitating him when he dives his head into the fresh snow. Size does not seem to be any kind of intimidation to this silly girl.

There were lots of good walks this week. And although she still tugs and pulls at the leash, she is starting to get the hang of walking alongside the dogs and people. Her stamina is growing every day and she can actually walk for quite a distance. Her feet still get cold, so it is sort of temperature dependent. She is going to be a hardy MN dog as she LOVES the snow.

Suzie is eating well. I swear she has grown at least an inch this week and probably a few pounds. Oh, yes - and with those longer legs comes a new confidence in chasing up the stairs.

We introduced a new play yard this week in the family room. And she is quite frustrated that her technique for escaping the other yard doesn't work with this one. In general, Suzie does not seem to like to be contained. She is equally upset in her crate, her play yard, and even her travel carrier. She does calm down, especially if she can hear voices or one of the other dogs is in sight.

Suzie is currently sleeping from about 10 p.m. until about 4 a.m. And then she needs a bathroom break. She would really like to eat breakfast at this time (she knows where the food is kept, and runs to that area and yips when she is hungry), but a little cuddling and she generally will go back to sleep until 6 a.m.

Housebreaking is going pretty well. No accidents in her crate to date. And she runs right outside to do her business when she is let outside. She does get super excited and sometimes has an accident when she is playing with the other dogs. But that is to be expected.
