In addition to LOVE this dog has the following requirements:
Entered Foster Care Fence Kid Friendly Another Dog Cat Friendly
11/15/2013 Preferred, but not required Age 10+ Required Yes
This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Erika is a sweet, dark red, 5-year-old Golden who is retiring from the breeding life. She has 5 puppies that she is currently taking care of: Ezra, Ethan, Enzio, Etta, and Evan. This will be her last litter, and then she will be spayed and ready to have a family of her very own. Erika is adapting to living life indoors. She is very sweet, but shy and is slowly coming out of her shell. She has from day 1 run up to my husband, me, and my daughter with tail wagging, giving kisses and looking for pets, and is learning new things each day. She now navigates our stairs pretty well with a little gentle coaxing, is learning to do her business outside, and she is learning how to walk on a leash.

She gets along well with my 3 dogs and has been fine around our cats as well. She loves to carry things around in her mouth, shoes, toys, papers, but she doesn't chew on them. She has been great about letting us and our friends handle her puppies with no protesting. As we get to know Erika better, we will continue to update you. She will be ready to go to her forever home after she is spayed, but can entertain interested adopters prior to that. Please let your placement advisor know if you think Erika would be a good fit.

Erika has found a wonderful family with someone home during the day, a wonderful Golden sister, a fenced yard, and she will get to travel to Arizona in the winter and up to the family cabin in the summer. She will be one loved puppy dog. Congrats to the C family and thank you for loving this special girl!

Here is an update 48 hours after adoption.

"We cannot tell you how happy we are to have this little girl.. She and Annie are inseparable and Annie has just brightened up. She seems very happy., has adjusted well.. Likes riding in the car and no accidents. We left them alone yesterday for about 3 hours and they did fine.. Just slept and no problem "

Hello to all my fans... I am still hanging out in Le Claire, IA, waiting for my perfect family to come along. While I enjoy it here, I would love a family of my own that can give me lots and lots of attention. So life here is pretty much the same, but I have had a few changes over the last month. Mom works at a vet clinic and treated me to a dental last month. It wasn't much of a treat in my opinion, as I had to have 8 teeth pulled, but all my remaining teeth are nice and clean now. I have now officially climbed into the car twice without having to be carried in. There was cheese involved, but progress is progress. I do great on my walks and walk right beside FM while the other dogs are trying to act like sled dogs pulling FM along.

Here are some pictures to show my beauty off. While I enjoy short walks outside and some time in the fenced backyard, I am a princess and prefer to spend my time snoozing in the living room. FM says that if someone would just take the chance to come meet me, she knows they would fall in love with me.

I apologize for not updating Erika’s page sooner. Life has been very busy around our house lately and foster mom has dropped the ball. Erika has been doing well. She enjoys being near her people whether that is indoors or out. She is a very laid-back dog and spends most of her time lounging on a dog bed. She is getting much better on the leash and seems to enjoy walks over lagging behind the whole time. Erika knows the routine around here and is at the side of the bed in the morning wagging her tail and letting us know she would like her breakfast. Here is another quick rundown on Erika since it has been a while.

  • She is house trained and does great in a crate when kenneled with another dog. We have only allowed her free roam for very short periods of time (less than 30 minutes) because she likes to chew items left out if she can get to them (her favorites are blankets, socks, and shoes). She does great overnight with free roam of the upstairs and we haven’t had problems with chewing.
  • She loves other dogs, each and every one of them! She is especially infatuated with Lilly (one of Jill’s puppies who lives next door to us). She also does great with cats and is great with my toddler, though some of her loud noises scare Erika, which is why she should go to a home with children over 10.
  • She loves human attention and goes right up to strangers for attention.
  • This girl doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. She has no aggressions or resource guarding of any kind.
  • She is now off her anti-anxiety meds and seems used to us being gone for the work day, as long as she has her friend Bella in the kennel with her. We have had no problems since starting that.
  • She knows sit and wait (when a treat is involved) and will usually come in from outside when called.
  • She has a very sweet, loving, and gentle personality. Her strong tail is always wagging. She rarely barks and enjoys lounging outside on the deck in the sun. I’ve caught her several times playing chase with the other dogs in the backyard.
  • She didn’t seem to have any problems with the recent thunderstorm, so I think it is safe to say she doesn’t have storm anxiety.
  • She still is scared of car rides and won’t yet jump in by herself, and she is a chewer when separated from you and not crated, which is anxiety related. A girl can’t be perfect though and we all have our faults.

I know we live a long way away from many our adopters, but please don’t let the distance scare you away. This girl is definitely worth it and has so much love to give.

As promised, here are a few new pictures of Miss Erika. She is patiently waiting for a forever home to call her own. If you have a home with lots of love, patience, another confident dog, and no young children, please contact your placement advisor.

It has been a while since I have updated Erika's profile. She has now been with us for 2 months and her puppies all went to their homes about a month ago. In the last couple of weeks, it seems like Erika has made some big progress. She has only had a single accident in the house in the last 3 weeks. She isn't 100% potty trained yet, but she is close. That is a huge improvement from a month ago. I've also noticed that she really enjoys going outside now. Whereas before, she would go out reluctantly and act confused as to why she was out there, now she runs out with all the other pups and enjoys running around the yard and playing in the snow. She is just a much happier dog than the one that came to us. She loves her dog siblings and they have been great for helping teach her how to be a dog.

Erika does have some separation anxiety. We have found, though, when crating her with another dog, that she does great. We moved her back to a very large wire crate (which she was escaping from previously) and now crate her with one of our dogs, Bella, and they do fine together. No barking in the kennel, no accidents, no escaping. She seems to be much calmer this way.

Erika still gets nervous with loud noises or sudden movements, but she has definitely become a Velcro dog. She wants attention just as much as the other dogs do and is always coming up to us asking for attention and pets. In the last couple of weeks, she has also decided that she wants to be in our room to sleep. She used to sleep in the living room by herself, but she has moved into the bedroom at night and now has her spot in the corner next to my side of the bed.

Erika goes in for her spay appointment on January 31st. After that, she will be ready to go to her forever home. I know there is wonderful home out there for Erika where she will grow and blossom. If you are interested in learning more about her, please contact your placement advisor.

I am so sorry that it has been so long since I have updated you. FM wasn’t used to taking care of puppies and she thought it was a lot of work. I’ve done it so many times it is old hat to me. :) She said between that, the other 5 pets that live there, a toddler, and work, she just didn’t get a new update sent in. Now that the puppies are adopted and Christmas is over, she is setting down to update all my fans on how I am doing.

  • Erika is not a typical breeder dog. She is friendly and sweet, and craves attention. She gets right on in there when the other dogs running up to me for pets. She is definitely on the shy side and will cower for a second with sudden movements, loud noises, etc, but she is not the typical frightened breeder dog. She craves being near people and is usually found lying in the living room next to us.
  • She is very attached to the other dogs in the home and needs to be around another dog for comfort and companionship.
  • House training continues to be a work in progress. She has only had 1 or 2 accidents in the last week, so she is getting much better, but still needs to be monitored closely. I would love to see her go to a home with a physical fence because I think she prefers to do her business in private, but this is not a requirement.
  • She is wonderful with my toddler. She doesn’t seem frightened of her loudness and awkward movements, and enjoys getting pats and pets from her.
  • She completely ignores our cats.
  • Erika is learning sit and how to wait for her dinner.
  • She is still very nervous about things like leashes, car rides, and new situations. She just needs more exposure to these things.
  • Erika has some separation anxiety. She does not like being crated at all, but cannot be trusted with free roam at this time. We are going to try some training techniques and medication for her to help. She would love to find a home where someone doesn’t work a full 8- to 10-hour work day, as is the case here.
