Little Laker has arrived in St Cloud and is enjoying country living:) I would like to send out a very special thank you to two great guys. John who does so much transporting for RAGOM. He got Laker to Joe in Worthington bright and early. Thank you, John. Joe is the brother of a RAGOM volunteer and he brought Laker all the way to St Cloud to me. He also made a stop on the way up to buy Laker a toy and bag of treats!! Laker would have preferred to stay with Joe and was kinda sad to have to go with me:( Thanks, Joe and John, you guys are awesome.
Laker came via one of the reservations in SD then a humane society, then into boarding. How could I resist this little guy. He is a cute little bugger with big brown eyes and a tail that curls. Breed? I haven't the foggiest, but wonder if maybe a little terrier and ??? (curly tail). Whatever his heritage he is a keeper. He arrived on Friday and made himself at home. He was a little cool with Faith (you will notice they look a lot alike) and my Jax to start, but has since warmed up to Faith and they enjoy playing together. His persistence paid off:) He kennels up on command and never a peep. I feed in 2 shifts so I feed Laker in his crate. I close the door and when he's done he pushes it open to let me know he's done. If he had his way he would sit on my lap and cuddle all the time. Where ever I am he wants to be. I have put a dog bed next to my chair and he is mostly content with that. I take turns letting the dogs sit up in the recliner with me, only when invited. He does like to put his paws up and beg for attention. He knows to come when called (recall is pretty good), he knows kennel up, treat, no and off. He does NOT know nor understand SIT. I have been trying to get him to sit in every way possible. He just has a thing about not sitting. Work in progress. When he's in his kennel I ask him to come out and he does. I have reached in and taken a hold of his collar and he has allowed me to take him out. However, he is more comfortable being asked to come out on his own. He isn't always fond of going outside as I think he feels like he won't be let back in. In time he will understand he will always be let back in. He has not marked or pottied in the house, except one night we came down to lower level and he was really sniffing and sniffing and all of sudden dropped his butt.......I yelled NO and got him outside. One kleenex was required for a small, firm deposit:)
He is smart. Smart enough to go up to the kitchen while we were all down stairs in the family room, open a drawer and pull out a loaf of bread and help himself. I suddenly heard a ripping sound and went bounding (well ok I walked) up the stairs to find Little Laker enjoying some bread. Not much, but I let him know this was not something that was acceptable. I wonder if he used to eat human food? No matter, he is now eating good food and treats and we have had no more drawer opening issues.
First day he was pretty much checking everything out and a bit hyper. He can jump up.......like right up on the coffee table to the couch. He was told NO once and removed and has never tried to get up again. He did put his paws up on the kitchen sink once while I was cleaning food off dishes, but again told NO and hasn't done it since. I can take his food away while he's eating, as well as toys or chews with no problem. However, if when he is in his kennel (door open) with a chew and one of the dogs walks by, he will give a warning growl, which is totally appropriate. Laker likes his kennel and will go in and out at will. He also likes to 'collect toy' and put in his kennel and has no issue going to Lady or Faith's kennel to check and collect from their kennels:) I took Laker and Lady 12-194 for a walk, both with flat leashes and he did well. He met a female lab on our walk and greeted her nicely.
We had the neighbor's grandkids (ages 3 & 6) over on Sunday to see the dogs. Laker did fine, no jumping up, nipping etc. A perfect gentleman. I think he would be fine with older kids that want to have a dog to hang with, snuggle and run a little. A fenced yard would be nice, but I think his recall is fairly good and with training he would do well. Obedience school would be fun for him and his family to bond. Laker would also do well as an only dog who got all the attention. He is, however, fine with the other 3 dogs here. He does not retrieve so if you are looking for a dog that wants to chase tennis balls all day, this isn't your guy. He also is good with my 3 cats when they appear, which is more than what I can say for my own dog and even Miss Faith 12-075:)

 More attention! |
This little guy just wants to be loved and to please you. I know you came to RAGOM looking for a golden or golden mix................but hey this is a golden boy in his own right. He's so loving, not a barker, listens well, would love to go for walks with you or snuggle up and watch TV. If you are an approved applicant looking for a little guy at about 45 lbs, this might just be the little guy for you. He's up to date on all his shots, neutered, has his Frontline and Heartgard in place and is ready to meet his forever family. He does have worms and we are on his 4th treatment right now and he has 2 more to go for now. He is also good with the cats, pretty much ignores them.
Enjoy the pics of this little sweetie. The weather is suppose to get warmer, which means POOL TIME, so will see how he feels about wading pools!!
Come meet Little Laker at Chuck & Don's on Saturday in Blaine:) Treats are welcomed!!!!
